Along, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to weigh the idea of reinforcing his substantial Fiction Corpus with more fiction books; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I have faith in the soundness of legislating English as the international community's second language. I don't regard highly the customary methodology by which the English language is taught.Pointer

Polishing a person's intimacy with a language isn't like developing a cleaner piece of coal. A language - a common tongue - isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to manipulate with greater amounts of precision. A shared tongue can not be severed from the philosophical currents of a clan of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to deprive him of its cultural context. A proper instructor has to find a way to introduce it; the discerning student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe words based on a particular corpus, a body of written language of various size and consistency. Such a corpus could contain everything from a book about literature to some really short bedtime stories. I lost many a sleepless night creating my "monstrous" Fiction Corpus in order to form a new genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have devised a million words and I have examined them, reframing them - not merely to teach the English language but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to coax that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

By the end of my first week in Europe in 2011, I had bought a car and out of the blue had met the woman who would join me on a 6,000 mile trek across the European continent, sharing the beat-up car that I had bought and the one small tent from Walmart that I had brought along with me on my flight.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

I had grown up in America. Land of opportunity. I came of age in the booming 90s when everything was possible. She had grown up in Poland. She had come of age at a time when the Soviets were making sure that there wasn't even anything to eat in the country. I couldn't even properly translate the word "opportunity" into Polish.

Each man grows up with his own kind of poverty. Even if he's got a warm house and plenty of food and a soft bed and plenty of entertainment, there's always something that a man needs. Sometimes he just needs to be listened to, if only by the birds and the trees, but preferably by another man, even if he's an artist from America who isn't very good at listening. By learning how to listen, we learn how to cooperate. By cooperating, we build a better world. In a better world, there are no devils to abuse us. A better world doesn't lend itself to abuse because a better world is populated by people who have learned how to listen.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Along

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word along in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word along, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word along is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Along in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

A secret commander does much to improve a volunteer organization's draw: by the time we withdrew from the Old Town, and the men marched north to Treblinka (where a Reserve Army division had placed its general staff, and where the men were quietly and gracefully disbanded), their ranks had risen to the tune of five hundred. Jesus had become a 'colonel,' and even though he didn't march at the head of his column, he was a force to be reckoned with: the Reserve Army saw to it that his men received amnesty, and Stalin, for instance, having avoided court-martial for becoming Jesus's captain, was, nevertheless, forced to accept demotion to the rank of staff sergeant, along with a humble and humiliating post in the army commissariat.

Verse 476 from the chapter called Arms

"The funny thing is: we never got lost. Every time we thought we were lost, we stopped, asked for directions, and it turned out we were on the right road. That happened about twenty times. But worst of all was near the end: they built so many new roads around here, I thought we were really lost. Turned out, just like all the other times, we weren't being patient enough: we kept turning off the road too soon. We hadn't seen the sign yet 'cause we hadn't gotten to it. But how many people we had to wake up to find out! At three in the morning! Two hundred kilometers or whatever it was, we had taken ten hours to cross. Every time we were going at a steady pace, which, for us, meant top speed on level terrain (the only time we were going any faster was coasting downhill), I looked at the speedometer and it said fifty-five kilometers an hour: there was no way that was true. It never fell below thirty even if we were crawling along. Oh, but we blew a tire! That was a god-awful disaster. It took a whole hour to change. My grandfather was so stubborn: he had to do it himself. And then the car rolled off the jack - what a mess! In the pouring rain!

Verse 214 from the chapter called Adolescence

They called him a traitor then! How they could've wondered if they had seen him those twenty or so years before, when, as a young tyro, scarcely out of his dead father's shadow - a meddlesome brat - a partisan who had never seen or heard or known the manual of arms, he started his great career as a leader of men, trusted, misunderstood, feared and derided, in precisely the same manner in which he ended it: that is, traitorously looping around a city under attack just so he could get his own: in the first case, it being a lot of money - whatever the Krupnik was getting for his trouble - but, in the second case, it being your beautiful mother, who, having searched far and wide across the plains of Mars for something (Jesus had no idea for what), had retired to her private apartments in the western half of Centropolis, the recaptured and secure part, which Jesus, at that point, was determined to penetrate - by himself. He didn't give a damn about Julius, the Resistance, even his own men, having relegated his first lieutenant, Stalin, to leading their retreat, along with the entire exodus of men, women and children, out from the Hellas Basin, away from your grandfather's tyranny, and north to the region of Alba Patera, while your selfish father planned his conjugal escape to the south. The only difference between that time and the first time was that, during the second time, God was still on his mind.

Verse 128 from the chapter called Arms

"What?" She ripped herself away from his arms. "Why not?" She was walking away. "Don't walk away from me." Jesus ran in front of her and grabbed her shoulders again. She ripped herself free and turned around, walking the other direction. "Where are you going?" Jesus asked. She kept walking. Finally, Jesus ran up alongside. Immediately, she turned around, like a stubborn cow, and walked the other way. "Stop playing games." She was silent. "Why don't you want to kiss me? Zoe?" She was playing dumb. "Listen to me." Jesus grabbed her again. "What's going on?"

Verse 1051 from the chapter called Security

The heavy arms were hidden, along with the money bags, and Jesus's men marched out. Those who were not deserters from the Polish Army stayed as Jesus's bodyguard in the Old Town. We were able to avoid the Army sweep, as surprisingly effective as it was, and, by the time most residents had returned to their homes, we had dispersed. Jesus returned to Treblinka. My cousin Stalin was stationed at a requisitioned magazine on Basement Road in the northeast corner of town. Elements of the 2nd Infantry were helping Reserve Army troops in their patrol mission; my cousin was in charge of feeding them.

Verse 9 from the chapter called Bohemia

Usage of Along in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

This initially did not disturb me; I only began to worry after my repeated invitations and overtures being politely but habitually dismissed, I began to spot him and his friend at the very same events to which I had invited him in vain, a pattern which culminated at the local festival. There were no punching machines, no Reisenrad, no ice cream; but the crummy rides and amusements did carry the memory of better times, along with the petty consolation that the Viennese Prater was so much better than this dismal place. I challenged Macy to a duel on the air mattress. He said no, he didn't feel like it. After a few minutes, he took his friend instead.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 6, Third Party Intervention, Paragraph 3, Clauses 9-14

So I ran: across the puddles of the road, along the sidewalk where the herringbone, undulating its miniature landscape of brick, now formed a miniature world of lakes and hills where my foot found its familiar patterns. I, leaping with irregular steps, passed those buildings which not so long ago were fresh in my experience, shuffling past the unconcerned remains of undergraduates - some wet behind the ears, some colleagues from not so long ago - but all now unfamiliar, threatening too from within their institutional shelter, so I had to avoid their faces, and hid my own as much from their imaginary judgment as from the now pelting rain, for I had neglected to bring an umbrella.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 1, Visiting Old Colleagues, Paragraph 3

Now here is where begins my great succession of images concerning our first encounter with "the Romaniac." I distinctly remember a large and stately Buick slowly rolling along the way, coming out of nowhere - since the road happened to curve around to the house. It is this sudden but slowly gathering grandeur that I have since associated with our strange Indiana - you may not share this - indeed now I realize what a special fascination she has held for you - but I am convinced, that if you had turned at the heralding sound of crunching gravel, instead of being childishly obsessed with showing off in front of our cousin, you would immediately have taken to the image of that chariot, rolling forth as it were from its dusty mandorla, before it teasingly disappeared behind the mounds of vegetation bordering the house.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 1, Genital Pain as a Result of Physical Trauma, Paragraph 2, Clauses 1-3

Nike was shocked. He was appalled. Police officers, despite being the worst kind of swine, should hold themselves with at least a little bit of respect, especially when they're idly standing along the Queensway of all vices. Nike was so ashamed he sat down near the bushes. Things were not going well. No one wanted to answer his questions unless he were going to negotiate business. Nike was not that foolhardy - at least, not yet: the pain was too much. But, because of it, he had to walk around like a grown man with rickets. Even the fat girls were laughing at him. Even the ugly girls, the cut girls, the destroyed and overly diseased girls were laughing at him. He was humiliated.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 10, Navigating the Socio-Political Spectrum, Paragraph 5

NIKE: Well, I know - I mean: you're not alone anymore: you're lucky I came along. You would've scared yourself half to death running away like that. You're not even wearing shoes: you might hurt your foot or something: you might slip and fall and then what?

BARB: Why are you here?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 22, Encountering Poverty, Paragraphs 68-69

The day came to attempt their first heist. Shephard couldn't be there. He had to give himself an alibi. He made arrangements for "Coke" to wait for his call at the hotel lobby. He left Pepsi's car along the desert highway with a flat. He hitched a ride to the gas station with a stranger. Before heading to the telephone, Shephard stopped by the restroom. Of the two stalls, one was taken. The other was soiled. Shephard wiped the seat as well as he could. He turned. He dropped his pants. He sat. The man next door was wearing expensive shoes. They looked familiar. Shephard chuckled. He said, "Nice shoes."

MS. JACKSON: How are you coming along?

KOKOMO: I'm almost done with the floor.

MS. JACKSON: Excellent. Do you mind if I help?

KOKOMO: Not at all.

MS. JACKSON: Can you believe my husband's charity? In trying to lighten your load, he increases it ten-fold.

KOKOMO: I'm sure he meant well.

MS. JACKSON: As every man always does. I'm sorry. I didn't come to complain. I want to apologize to you personally for not being a better employer.

KOKOMO: You haven't been bad, Ms. Jackson.

MS. JACKSON: Don't lie. I know I could've been much better to you. The truth is I haven't wanted to be: not since the day I hired you. I don't know if you can understand this. I saw so much of myself in you. I hated it - not because it was a bad thing - because it was good. The things I saw in you were things about me that I felt had never been properly appreciated. I permitted my resentment to stand in the way of my great admiration. I abused you. I'm sorry. Please accept my apology.

– ACT II, lines 4-12

MS. JACKSON: Thank you.

GREY GOOSE: You can even sleep here tonight. As for tomorrow, I can't be sure. We'll just have to wait and see.

MS. JACKSON: What?

GREY GOOSE: You may be on the sofa bed for a while.

MS. JACKSON: You knew all along.

GREY GOOSE: You're not the only snitch on this island.

MS. JACKSON: I shouldn't have trusted those Australians.

GREY GOOSE: Men are all alike.

MS. JACKSON: Fill them with enough drink, they'll spill their guts.

GREY GOOSE: They'll betray their confidential informants.

– ACT II, lines 491-500

LESBIAN: I can put this one back. No one can accuse me of stealing it. I just borrowed it to show that some things in life are more important than others. Whom am I kidding? I took it to get into my landlady's panties. I'm a terrible human being. There have been worse than me - like the person who stabbed that poor girl sixty-two times: the first murderer this island has had to fear in more than one hundred and fifty years. Both suspect and victim were like me: alien to this place. Why did we come? What did we hope to find? Peace? We scared her off. Happiness? Satisfaction? Understanding? Why here? Why do we trespass on other people's land? It stands in our way - but of what? There's nothing beyond what's right in front of us at any given time. There's no way of knowing that unless you trespass. All that one can hope to do is make as little damage as possible along the way. We are all criminals, whether we like it or not. Though some of us are big and some of us small, we are all cut from the same dough. That's not the easiest thing to believe when one man robs or kills another man. What was my crime? Why am I punished? Why am I the only one who's alone? Or is it just my imagination? Are there others out there who can see me? Who know me? Who can feel my pain? If there are, I salute you. I would kiss you if I could. I can't, so I just say, 'Thank you.'

Usage of Along in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

There is no time left to lose. My comrade and I leap into the sky. We sail across a desert. I am ashamed of the days we've wasted. All the smug, sad, shiftless, complacent, self-satisfied people we left uninspired. I see one already. He is walking along a road. He drags a shovel through the sand.

– from “Shovels Fall,” an interesting story about the cycle of rebellion throughout history

The hill in question had about a hundred boxes split along two streets both rising in diverging directions from the same point on Profile Road until curving back upon themselves and meeting at the top of the hill in the form of Facebook Terrace. It was formerly under the complete purview of Rural Rural Route 10 until Rural Rural Route 10 was disbanded upon the retirement of Old Man Dickinson and split between Rural Routes 2 and 4. Rural Rural Route 4 received the entire hill to much joy at the turn of the next pay period. Until winter came and the disrepair of Update Street combined with the freezing runoff on Download Street caused much grumbling and more than a few broken mailboxes. Still the money was good.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story that represents real life for some people, though the details are fictional

Pfizer wandered around the ground floor for a while. Aimless and distracted. He thought about hopping into a suit and swimming through the sky. In a few years it wouldn't be possible. The atmosphere was getting less dense. Pfizer hit himself in the head. Trivialities. It was the phosphane lions he had to worry about. Their habitat was disappearing. If he couldn't prove their indigenous nature they would never survive. Only his samples would remain. As long as some unscrupulous administrator didn't toss them out. Along with Pfizer's career.

– from “Titan's Reign,” a science fiction story in which all hope is absorbed even when it's traveling at light speed

That night Proctor was woken by a noise. He came downstairs to find an open window. The curtains were blowing in the wind. He heard the sound of a table being nudged along the floor. He drew his gun. With bated breath he inched towards the nearest light switch. He flipped it on. A raccoon jerked its head. Its eyes glowing. Proctor shut the light. He waited in silence for what seemed like hours. There was no one.

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a dead body put in a weird position

When Proctor got home Elizabeth was packing her bags. She was going to her sister's. She didn't want Proctor coming along. She told him to look at the news. John Gamble was all over it. So was his dead husband. Found in a love nest. Which sources claimed he may have shared with a cop.
