Anywhere, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's considering the concept of expanding his unheroic Fiction Corpus with a book about fiction books; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the feasibility of honoring English as a worldwide lingua franca. I don't think highly of the uninspiring routine with which the English language is taught.Pointer

Beefing up a person's skills with a language isn't like producing a smoother paper. A language - a common tongue - is not merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to employ with greater amounts of precision. A spoken language cannot be disentangled from the competing values of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to deprive him of its cultural context. An informed educator must have a strategy for introducing it; the bravest pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define a language based on a particular corpus, a set of writing of various scope and consistency. They could include anything from a book about literature to a whole bunch of experimental fiction. I lost many a night forging my "substantial" Fiction Corpus in order to form a peculiar class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have prepared a million words and I have classified them, reformulating them - not simply to teach the English tongue but to promote the human spirit, and to goad that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

When I arrived in Europe on the 20th of June, 2011, I had no plan and certainly no idea that by the end of the week I would be practicing photography with a woman I had never met, a naturist who had never before allowed herself to be photographed nude. It was the first of a whole series of firsts for the both of us.

Though as an artist I had been working on body acceptance since the start of my career, and as a one-time practicing figure model was used to being nude in a social setting, I had been left largely unexposed to the community of naturists and nudists working towards the same goal of promoting the human being. Visiting nude beaches and resorts along the East Coast and participating in events organized around New York by Young Naturists America, I was left hungry for more and had come to Europe to see things from their side of the pond. Margo was my introduction.

I considered myself young and able, and being American I often convinced myself I was more than able. She didn't feel quite so young. Having grown up in Poland, what was and is still considered by many to be a poor country, she had the added burden of not only being disadvantaged but having it held against her. The difference became palpable when I realized I couldn't even properly translate into Polish the very American word, "opportunity." A chance? Sure. An occasion? Why not? An opportunity? Not in the book.

6,000 miles. One car. One tent. We started learning how to listen. We started learning how to open up. We started cooperating. Even when we were angry, even when it was so difficult that it didn't seem like it would turn out well, we stuck it out. We completed the trip and we came back happy. We had beaten the devil on the road. Back home more devils were waiting to abuse us. More anger. More fear. More sadness. This time we were prepared. This time we had each other and we could harken back to the joy and the trust and the suprise that 6,000 miles had created. We could remember what it was like to live in one tent.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Anywhere

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word anywhere in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word anywhere, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word anywhere is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Anywhere in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Forgive me, child, when I say that I found her, at first, only somewhat attractive. Her forehead was huge; her chin, nonexistent. Only later did I fully realize how well the two complemented each other - it required a sophisticated taste, one which I did not yet possess - but, nevertheless, even the most sophisticated taste would have required some sort of refinement to accept her beauty for what it was: complex and unrepentant. Unearthly was the best word. She was half-Japanese and half-Martian, which made her broad and narrow at the same time. It gave her a short and straight and yet upturned nose that anywhere else would've been ugly, but which on her was essential to the whole. It was a package of such unexpected brilliance that the parts were too bold to allow for quick and easy appreciation of the angelic splendor that shone from within and without. She was light. She was truly an angel. Hers was the most serene and gentle complexion I would ever come to value, and, at first, it struck me as rather odd. It was square and round, flat and curved, with almond-shaped eyes whose lids folded around her eyeballs - they were beautiful eyes. I came to love them with all my heart. What a strange and complex face your mother had.

Verse 442 from the chapter called Bohemia

"He was funny, though: my grandfather. Turns out: some screw was loose in the pedal or something; we have to push the whole thing back. There was no gas getting into the engine. The pedal was dropping forward: you could barely press it down. My grandfather was pushing hard; we weren't going anywhere! 'Drive,' I said. 'I am driving! You think I don't know how to drive? I know how to press a pedal! Look: this is the kind of car it is.' Now and again, he'd grab his leg all of a sudden, as if his muscles were cramping up; he'd rub 'em really hard. 'Watch out,' I said. 'You'll break your leg.'

Now the reason for my erection was straightforward. The truth is: the sight of Gianni's naked body was, in fact, stimulating...and I often experienced erections in his presence. But, my arousal was not the product of desire: it was the product of a simple visual stimulant working with my imagination. To put it plainly: Giovanni was being sexy, and I was being aroused. Not everyone would be comfortable with himself in that sort of situation, but I knew it for what it was: intentional arousal on the part of Giovanni which I had nothing to do with. It didn't mean I wanted to have sex with him. It didn't mean I wanted to have sex with anyone. And I certainly didn't want him looking at me lustfully. I didn't want his hand on my shoulder petting me. I didn't want his hand anywhere else, but I didn't say anything, because...I was...I don't know: maybe I was waiting to see what would happen. But, of course, he was arousing me more and more: anybody's hand will do that, especially when it's drawing lightly across the skin.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 12, Private Clubs, Paragraph 9, Clauses 3-5

You should, however, go down to Jermyn Street and find me something. I don't care what it is exactly, so long as it's something mannish, something you would like. It's not for me to wear: I want to spray it around the house, all over the furniture, the bathrooms, the studio, and especially my bed. Obviously I'll refrain from entering the other bedrooms - don't worry about that. Besides, you're not planning on coming back any time soon, so there's no reason why you shouldn't do it. If you don't want to go all the way to St. James then go to Mayfair. Although I suppose that would be the same thing. Go to Knightsbridge - but stay away from Harrod's: I don't want you doing business there. Although, come to think of it, why would I have you do business anywhere in the West End?

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 9, Intoxication, Paragraph 6

Luke met us outside the door, and - surprise, surprise - he brought with him our beloved Nike. They said it was too crowded - the bar wasn't open yet - so they suggested we go down the street. Poor Babs was too nervous: she didn't want to go anywhere. But we told her there was nothing to worry about; we would make Luke buy her no matter what, and after she murmured how she didn't want to be late, we finally convinced her by insisting that we were only doing what was best for her; we would prepare her in the best way possible: by buying her a few shots of liquor - a strong one, so there would be no question of nerves.

Francesco admired this. He saw a bit of himself in the tenacity that Ferrari naively expected others to fear. It was made all the more endearing by the fact that Ferrari was not very strong. Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
