Hardly, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is kicking around the viability of complementing his stately Fiction Corpus with real horror stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I regard highly the soundness of administering English as everyone's second language. I don't trust in the blah blah blah manner in which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Upgrading one's know-how with a language isn't like bringing about a stronger rope. A language - a common tongue - is not merely an instrument that you can learn to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A living tongue cannot be sundered from the competing values of a clan of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a pupil recite English is to strip him of its cultural context. A capable instructor has to prepare a plan for introducing it; the perceptive pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words based on a particular corpus, a set of written language of various size and consistency. They could contain everything from a book about literature to many books of fiction. I burned many candles developing my "colossal" Fiction Corpus in order to form a new genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have prepared a million words and I have ordered them, reshaping them - not just to teach the English language but to reveal the human spirit, and to goad that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Four days after I arrived in Poland, the largely Catholic country was celebrating Corpus Christi, complete with solemn processions down the street. Three days later I had made a solemn vow that if given the chance to express it, I would show love to a woman I had only just met.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

As an American, I was full of optimism and confidence bordering on recklessness. I was ready to run the wheels off the car I had just bought and eventually I would. As a European, she was cautious and mistrustful. She needed to make sure the air conditioner worked. Which it did. If you knew how to turn the broken knob in just the right way.

Despite the cops in Vienna. Despite the rain in Veržej. Despite getting lost in Italy. Despite parting at Soest. Despite that night in Amsterdam. Despite our fight in Lisieux. Despite the storm in the Bois de la Roche. Despite that terrible morning outside Collonges. Despite the long road to Pielenhofen, we came back safe and sound and most importantly we were happy. We had started to learn how to listen. We had left the devils of the road behind and the devils ahead seemed just a little bit smaller. We had started to open up.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Hardly

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word hardly in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word hardly, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word hardly is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Hardly in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

After a while, I went to the rock and said, "Ouch: my back is tired. Send the monkey." She hardly smiled.

Verse 790 from the chapter called Bohemia

She was there. Standing in the field, she was wearing a short jacket, a skirt extending below the knee and trousers. She was standing next to her monkey. She was short and extremely isolated. She was absurd and pitiable. She was beautiful. I was overjoyed. I didn't show it. I hardly felt it. I knew it was there, but the feeling was blanketed with an iron will. My happiness was unimportant.

Verse 533 from the chapter called Bohemia

The following year, when Sapper came to visit, this trend was evident. Jesus had cultivated a certain image in that particular neighborhood in which he found himself that year. By a strange fluke, he was friendly with the local drug dealer, who had been expelled from Jesus's old school a few months after Jesus had left it. They found themselves in the same neighborhood again, and, whereas before they had hardly known each other, now they had something in common. Jesus kept his distance, of course, but it was good to be on friendly terms with a local drug dealer - if only for effect. Your father also assaulted a local black boy whose mother was white - I don't remember the reason, but the attack was successful and therefore good for image. Your father was himself assaulted by some sort of Indian boy, but he was small and therefore his attack was more confusing than painful - Jesus was able to insult him for it.

Verse 235 from the chapter called Childhood

I wondered if she were baptized. I had wanted to ask her that at one point, but I stopped myself. It hardly mattered in the case of a girl so alienated from the Divine that she could seriously (or, perhaps, mockingly) contemplate whether God be an ant and then indulge in the fantasy. It was fascinating. There was so much I wanted to ask her, but I needed time - time and the delicacy it brings.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 25, Second Base, Paragraphs 5-9

But she was adamant: "Maybe for the moment, yes. But believe you me: if you sit down and tell him how you feel, in the end, you will be reconciled. Now, if that means never talking to him again, fine: so be it. But as long you ignore the problem by ignoring him, there is no peace for either of you. And that's all I want: I don't need you two to be friends: that hardly matters to me. But you can't be like this: because I don't like it. Understood?" I nodded my head. "Then are you going to call him?" Yes. "Are you going to call him tonight?" Yes. "To invite him to dinner?" Yes. "For tomorrow?" Yes. "Good: because I know he's free." And why's that? "Because we're having dinner tomorrow, and I'm canceling."

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 2, Prayer & The Reformation, Section 10, Bringing Up a Sore Subject, Paragraph 125

I hope that I have somehow conveyed the nature of these experiences. But they are so diverse, and the only common element is this feeling in my loins that I can hardly begin to describe. And I have felt it around you many times. But around you, I don't usually employ my imagination. The most powerful experience I had with you came very simply.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 5, Inflammation of the Loins, Paragraph 4, Clauses 1-5

By the time Luke woke me, we were late for the party. I had no time left to prepare - I mean, mentally - and Luke was of little help; he was cluttering up my mind with his needless talk. We could've made our way up Prospect Street in silence; the ten or so blocks would've cleared my mind. But I was being rushed - of course we were late and had to hurry; I was following Luke, trying not to pay attention - suddenly there we were, fast approaching that heavy door of Nike's house - I hardly had time to feel my usual fear of entering parties. The door was opened; I was inside, greeted by a general cry; I saw Macy near a corner smiling, but "Ah, Nike!" was directly in front, his embrace all but smothering.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 8, Partying with Intellectuals, Paragraph 1

I caught Luke at the corner of the street, he wearing his red anorak and bowler hat; so silly: the rain was collecting in the rim, dumping on his shoulders at every twist of the head; he looked like a leaking fire hydrant. But he hardly recognized me staring out of the cab. After I finally ventured out into the rain, I yelled at him: "You have a hood on that thing, why don't you use it?" But he said it wasn't big enough for the hat. I didn't ask for an explanation. And since Luke quickly took notice of my hair, I wasted no time asking him if I could shower at his place. When you're alone with Luke, it's best to be brief. As it turned out, he was on his way to a meeting. He wasn't planning on going back to his dormitory until right before Nike's party. I mentioned how fortuitous our meeting was, and he, being very conscious of fate, was obliged to change his plans. Giving up his key, Luke said that he would meet me in his room, and that he would be, at the very most, an hour.
