Though, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal refuses to consider the potential of compounding his gallant Fiction Corpus with real adventure stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I regard highly the soundness of implementing English as a common language for the world. I do doubt the unspectacular fashion in which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Enriching a person's dexterity with a language isn't like launching a stronger wheelbarrow. A language - a spoken language - isn't just an instrument that you can teach yourself to wield with a greater amount of precision. A language cannot be riven from the philosophical currents of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make people recite English is to deprive them of its cultural context. A proper educator has to prepare a plan for introducing it; the discerning student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of writing of varying size and consistency. They can contain everything from a book about literature to a whole bunch of story books. I lost many a sleepless night forging my "unheroic" Fiction Corpus in order to form a distinct sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have framed a million words and I have scrutinized them, reformulating them - not just to teach a language but to defend the human soul, and to propel that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

A Better Way to Define English: Grouped into Eight Types of WordsPointer

Type 2 Answers the Question, "How?"

The 8 types of words can be associated with the days of the week in the Acceptance calendar. Monday, or Labor Day respresents the "How"

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Though

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word though in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word though, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word though is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Though in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Jesus said, "I thought that village people still quartered."

Verse 296 from the chapter called Adolescence

All I see is spinning, my child: elements of red, green, blue - memories of Earth - Mars - misery. There is no peace in my mind. It spits out bile. FUCK THE EARTH it says. FUCK MARS! They are my voices. FUCK VOICES! They torment me: stop me from writing. But I must write. There is no time left. I thought maybe your grandfather might fail - maybe Julius might win. But he stays inside his volcano. He is at peace with himself. FUCK JULIUS! God bless Julius. He is a good man - a simple man. WITHOUT ZEUS, HE IS NOTHING: HE IS NOT KING. Fuck Zeus: the machine-god. Where is he? He abandons us. He is wanton. No: he is calculating. Zeus the Almighty. FUCK GOD. No! Do not curse God. God is great. God is good. Zeus is not God.

Verse 1 from the chapter called Invocation

Usage of Though in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

You should, however, go down to Jermyn Street and find me something. I don't care what it is exactly, so long as it's something mannish, something you would like. It's not for me to wear: I want to spray it around the house, all over the furniture, the bathrooms, the studio, and especially my bed. Obviously I'll refrain from entering the other bedrooms - don't worry about that. Besides, you're not planning on coming back any time soon, so there's no reason why you shouldn't do it. If you don't want to go all the way to St. James then go to Mayfair. Although I suppose that would be the same thing. Go to Knightsbridge - but stay away from Harrod's: I don't want you doing business there. Although, come to think of it, why would I have you do business anywhere in the West End?

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 9, Intoxication, Paragraph 6

There are no best things, no best people and no best friends either. Oh my dear brother: those who judge themselves or others according to hierarchies of quality may do so, and with great authority, but only if they acknowledge the arbitrariness of ranking. You know, brother: things I once thought so precious have now paled; people I once felt so strongly, so physically without even touching: they are now like chipmunks or squirrels in the backyard - tall grass itching at one's leg - arousing very little in the way of interest.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

"Now what," thought Shephard. There was a truck in the distance. Shephard thought about hijacking it. If he could somehow flip it over-he shook his head. That was ludicrous.

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring a woman from a Turkish minority in China

The smoothness of the leather reassured me. I stroked it. I thought of my leg: the poison ivy I once brushed pulling overgrown grape vines from the trees: the week-long rash I suffered, whose blisters having burst, whose pus having wept dry, left that spot intoxicatingly numb, sprinkled with delightfully silky bumps, a token of pain patiently endured, an itch fitfully ignored, a small triumph of will, now faded into memory, temporarily rescued from the abyss of oblivion.

Usage of Though in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

I opened the school the next day. There were birds nesting in the furnace. I thought it was a good sign. I left them there for the sake of the students. I wanted us to remove them together as a way of bonding. No students came. I sat in the room by myself until the afternoon with nothing but chirping to keep me company. I asked the headman if the villagers knew I had come. He said he would take care of it.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that describes the reality of this planet no matter who you are

Orbitz sputtered his way along the headmast. He spotted his ship, the Argo, lying just beyond the outermost sails. He brought the body onboard. He didn't have much time to hide it. Sara Lee was already approaching from the north. By the time Orbitz shut the hatch to the maintenance module she was already buzzing the airlock. Orbitz let her onboard. "Why are we meeting here?" she asked. "I thought we were going to the Nautilus."

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my love for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

I guess we were fated, you know. Me and my brothers. We came out first though. Not those other guys. That's why we won. That's why I won. I always said I was the oldest. I never had any proof though, you know. I mean we were probably switched around ten times when we were babies. So who was to say. But I always believed I was the eldest. You know. Now nobody can argue with me.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story based on principles of honor coming straight out of Roman mythology

The man interviewing Sara Lee was taken aback. He had asked the woman one of the control questions. The correct answer was supposed to be no. The Amazon spoke into his microphone. He had the interviewer ask the question again. Sara Lee squinted. She thought about it. She said, "I'm not sure."

"Answer yes or no, please" said the interviewer.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance which hopefully would make Lem proud, if you know who that is

Living with Barack wouldn't have made any difference. He wasn't attacked at home like Khalifa. He was attacked by ten men in the middle of the street. In the middle of the day. People standing all around. If I had moved in with him it could've been me in that tunnel to the station. We could both be twitching for the rest of our lives. He told me when he saw me he considers it lucky I was not there.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story inspired by fact, though the details are fictional

Large Wall Art Depicting the Human Landscape

Life is a spinning sphere with Joy at one pole and Sadness at the other. Each continuously feeding its pair. Joy flanked by the emotions of Trust on one side, Surprise on the other. Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others. Multiplied and divided, in equal parts. Such that to those from whom it has been subtracted, we must add. Until we are whole.
