Cloak, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to debate the thought of reinforcing his colossal Fiction Corpus with a story about fine art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I believe in the practicality of employing English as the world's second language. I do doubt the altogether plodding game plan by which English is presented for study.Pointer

Perfecting a person's artfulness with a language isn't like pioneering a bigger bomb. A language - a spoken tongue - isn't merely an instrument that you can learn to exploit with a greater amount of precision. A common language cannot be bisected from the shared logic of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to strip her of its cultural context. A capable educator has to have a blueprint for introducing it; the wisest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of writing of varying size and consistency. This corpus might contain everything from a book about literature to a bunch of fiction characters. I burned many candles developing my "gigantic" Fiction Corpus to form a different kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have fashioned a million words and I have ordered them, reshaping them - not simply to teach American vocabulary but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to goad that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Help End the Abuse of Process With ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

In June of 2011 I arrived in Europe for what I hoped would be a great adventure; my only concrete plan, to visit Croatia. By September I had driven 6,000 miles and visited 12 different countries, all with a woman I met on the first Friday of my trip.

I had come to Europe to experience European naturism, a movement whose philosophy matched my aesthetic of body acceptance and whose organizational structure and leadership I had thought almost exclusively restricted to the western half of the continent. I was shocked to learn that naturism had an official home in Poland, a country not especially known for its liberal culture. I was less shocked to discover that the home was owned by a Dutchman, but even more shocked to learn that it had been largely built by Margo.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

Do unto others as you would have done unto you. But how to judge what we would want done to us if we've never been in somebody else's shoes? If we've never been abandoned by our mother, how do we treat somebody who has? Somebody who seems to constantly suffer the repurcussions of it? Margo and I had 46 days and 6,000 miles to try on each other's shoes. We had one car and one tent in which to hear each other's words. We learned to cooperate. We started learning how to listen.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Cloak

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word cloak in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word cloak, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word cloak is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Pronunciation of CloakMargo on a trampoline

I have yet to publish a pronunciation for the word cloak.

Video of me pronouncing "cloak."

Definition of CloakMargo on a trampoline

A cloak used to mean a kind of heavy overcoat that didn't have sleeves but nobody really wears them anymore. Since weird smarty-pants people like monks or outlaws used to hide themselves or their weapons in these things now the word generally refers to the act of hiding something in plain sight by the use of some kind of weird technology.

Usage of Cloak in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

So he raped her, using a wimple to choke her, a veil to gag her, and a scapular and cloak to bind her arms behind her.

When she was done, he left her there lying on the Bagatelle, quiet and unresponsive.

He drove home with his companions, and then I woke up.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 23, The Effects of Poverty, Paragraphs 26-28

Luka turned around. The headlights came back towards us. We hid in the bushes. The woman was not hard to find. She was walking along the road. Her white cape glowed in the darkness. Luka caught her in his high beams. For a moment, the brilliancy of her cloak flashed before our eyes. It was all we could see. She had crossed her arms in front of her head. She was barefoot. She had dirty feet - beautiful, dirty feet.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 22, Encountering Poverty, Paragraph 44

"You're lying to me, bitch: come back here!" Luka unbuckled his seat belt, he unlocked his door and then he opened it. He jumped out and ran around the car. It took a while before he caught up with her.

He grabbed her cloak. Then he grabbed her arm and caught it. He wrapped his other arm around her and clamped her mouth shut.

Usage of Cloak in Tsiga Tsiga Tsiga

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Her breasts were bared. She wasn't wearing a tunic. Only the flimsy fabric of a friar's scapular covered the length of her body beneath her cloak. With her arms stretched back, two nodules of beautiful fat bulged from beyond her hems, settling under their own weight like egg white beaten to a soft peak, waiting to be folded into batter. The satin of her scapular suddenly sashayed across her nipples. It fell against the side of one breast. It squeezed itself into her cleavage. Pluck, I begged quietly to myself, the obnoxious apron out.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring a frank discussion of a cloak

To the west, the forest was not half as thick. Within minutes, Barbara was on the edge of a long stretch of lawn. Moonlight colored everything an eerie shade of grey. In the distance, the pastel walls of the Château de Bagatelle gleamed. It was hopelessly far away. It didn't matter. Barbara ran.

Luka reached the edge. He was not a slim man. It took him a few moments to catch up. He grabbed Barbara's cloak. He pulled her back. He wrapped himself around her. He clamped her mouth shut.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring a cloak

"What?"

"Did you see that?"

"What?"

"A girl-in a white cloak."

"Where?"

"I saw her-on the edge of the light."

"What did she look like?"

"Beautiful."

"Yeah?"

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story about poverty

The woman swallowed. "How do you do?"

"My name is Luka. I'm from Romania." The woman pulled her cloak tightly across her body. Luka glanced at Nike. He looked back at the woman. He said, "I will be your driver."

The woman nodded. "Thank you."

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring a desperate man

Barbara peered into the back. Nike's supine body seemed to prove Luka right. She thought about it. "Thank you," she whispered. She came to the door. She opened it. She pulled her cloak tight. She climbed in. She grabbed the door. It swung closed.

Censorship says everything...as should modern wall art

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
