Bust, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is thinking over the possibility of boosting his extravagant Fiction Corpus with a non fiction book; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't question the possibility of administering English as an international language for the world. I do doubt the enervatingly inanimate approach by which English is presented for study.Pointer

Beefing up one's skillfulness with a language isn't like producing a stronger glue. A language - a living tongue - is not just a tool that you can learn to use with greater amounts of precision. A language can not be cleaved from the professed knowledge of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching people to recite English is to rob them of its cultural context. A capable teacher must find a method of introducing it; the bravest student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of written works of various size and consistency. A corpus may include anything from a book about literature to a whole bunch of fantasy fiction. I burnt many candles developing my "resplendent" Fiction Corpus in order to form a different genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have cut them down, reformulating them - not merely to teach a tongue but to reveal the human spirit, and to encourage that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

In June of 2011 I arrived in Europe for what I hoped would be a great adventure; my only concrete plan, to visit Croatia. By September I had driven 6,000 miles and visited 12 different countries, all with a woman I met on the first Friday of my trip.

I had come to Europe to document people practicing naturism. Preliminary arrangements had been made to meet with an Egyptian nudist visiting the Continent and there was some kind of Pan-European gathering scheduled to take place in Croatia. I had arranged for an assistant to come along with me to help with anything I needed, but when her passport was stolen the night before we were supposed to leave, my plans went awry. I decided on something less ambitious. I would visit a naturist sauna in the city of Bielsko-Biala, Poland which I had just found on the internet. When I got there, I met Margo.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

I've never gone hungry without deserving it. I've never been systemically beaten by a parent. I've never been fondled by a priest. That doesn't mean I can't listen to somebody who has had to experience such abuse and it doesn't mean I can't try to understand. Margo and I traveled 6,000 miles together. We slept in the same tent. We had to listen to each other. A person shouldn't need 6,000 miles to do it. We should be able to listen to each other just because we want to. We should've been taught to do it. If we haven't been taught, we should be learning how to do it and learning fast.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Bust

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word bust in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word bust, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word bust is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Definition of BustMargo on a trampoline

The word bust primarily refers to a bulbous object of admiration, usually made of stone that represents somebody's likeness in three dimensions starting from the shoulders and invariably including the head or else starting from the shoulders and heading down, invariably including the breasts, in which case the bust in question is part of a living human body, usually female, or else a two-dimensional likeness of said area. A bust can also refer to the act of bursting open the entrance of a closed space and entering it, especially with the intention of ceasing nearby activity, or the actual act of ceasing somebody's activity or the state of having had one's activity ceased in any kind of manner whatsoever.

Usage of Bust in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

In the history of litigation, nobody had ever dared bring such a case before the International Court of Justice. The main reason was 'contributory negligence,' something which the defendants could easily plead, seeing as how few people could legitimately claim that they had never done anything to contribute to the world's air pollution. Here is where your grandfather's genius came through: he had never let your grandmother drive a car; she had never operated any kind of combustion engine; she had never even made a fire, having always cooked on electric stoves; she was immaculate, having spent most of her life in bed, never having owned a house, and therefore never having had to heat one with coal or gas - she was perfect.

Verse 60 from the chapter called Adolescence

For generations before that tragic explosion (and the other one that followed it), the use of fossil fuels on Earth had been, generally speaking, limited. Subject to strict regulation and prohibitive taxation, most of it had gone to the planet Mars, the cost of transport being cheaper for oil than for any other potential source of energy, and, thanks to general tax relief and subsidies for processes like coal liquefaction, this export of fossil fuels was actively encouraged. When Yellowstone exploded, this trend was immediately reversed: export was discouraged while taxation and restrictions for consumption on Earth were quickly repealed. This move was meant to help the unfortunate ones who either needed a fast and easy source of energy or heat or else required the speed and mobility that oil and gas fueled internal-combustion engines offered. These people were not just Americans; they lived all across the globe - a globe now darkened by layers upon layers of atmospheric haze that made large photovoltaic power systems, based upon thousands of silicon and gallium arsenide solar cells, incapable of meeting the urgent energy needs of a suffering planet. Fossil fuel consumption was allowed to grow despite the knowledge that fossil fuel emissions would only make the Earth's atmosphere even more unclean.

Verse 6 from the chapter called Security

If, for example, the first guard were not subdued in darkness or, even better, beyond the range of the cameras, alarm would be raised and Leonard Cohen-Krupnik would be warned prematurely. If the guards were not vigilant, on the other hand, I would slip through unseen and the fourth-floor guard would thwart our plan. The trick relied on creating just enough suspicion to make the security director send the fourth-floor guard away without bothering Krupnik. Otherwise, the plan was a bust and Stalin and I would have to escape by way of balcony without getting killed or identified. A Best Face Mask only did so much to cover up one's face.

Verse 1149 from the chapter called Security

In those days, women wore anything that resembled something from a famous hand-tinted photograph from the nineteenth century. There was a free catalog available on the Internet, listing all the famous collections and the most famous photographs, organizing them by date or location, or photographer, painter, model - every criterion available - but especially by women's dress. The crinoline; the cage crinoline, dome and pyramid, flat in front; the crinolette; and the bustle were all represented in their various forms and colors. Even pornographic photographs were readily available to show off every type of undergarment. Famous women wore bloomers underneath their petticoats: the kind with an open crotch and single button, which made it much easier to have sex fully clothed, a favorite and celebrated pastime for the elites.

Great sinew that grips the crest of the pelvic girdle - at the threshold of ilium - whence many great muscles start their journey, such as gluteus maximus, rectus femoris, his three vasti (lateralis, medialis and intermedius): four great ships whose massive hulls you, sartorius, have the privilege of escorting down man's thigh (cuddling them, wrapping yourself over and across them) until you fall spiraling down the inner side, inserting yourself at the tibia, that shimmering place behind which the robust and shapely gastrocnemius makes his dwelling: the great propellant, whom the ancients framed with gleaming buskins, which, connecting with the humble soleus, comes down to the very heel of man: that splendiferous tuberosity! that beneficial growth which takes the weight of our standing, which balances our otherwise feeble attempts at uprightness.

Usage of Bust in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

"Listen," said the captain. "I want you to interview this John Gamble but don't take Bob. Apparently he busted the guy's husband when he was back on vice."

Proctor interrupted. "I think you should know, captain," he said. "My wife probably modeled for this guy way back when."

The captain sighed. "Are you sure?" he asked. "You know what. Never mind. Take Simmons with you. Just do it."

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a dead figure model put in a weird position

"Stay here," said Proctor. "I'm going back to see John." When Proctor got to John's building, there was a squad car outside. An officer behind the wheel. Upstairs his partner stood outside John's door.

"Just you?" asked Proctor. The officer nodded. "Okay. Have a smoke."

"Thanks, boss." The man walked off. Proctor knocked on the door. When John opened it, Proctor busted it wide. He threw John against the wall.

"Who else knows, you cocksucker?"

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring an artist put in a weird position

In the end the professor's wife settled her wrongful death suit out of court. She moved out of East Farmville and the busted mailbox she had propped up in memory of her dead husband became another spider hole. Another clogged paper cemetery which Mark and the other substitutes kept cramming junk mail into because they didn't want to bring it back to the office. Life moved on. Somebody bought the house. They put up a new box. Fresh mail started coming in. Judging by the amount of Free Matter for the Blind, Mark hoped he wouldn't be seeing any more amateur photographers anytime soon.

Proctor found the key. He decided a man carrying a carpet was probable cause. He entered the apartment. It didn't take long to find a photo. It was vic number three. Proctor called in the cavalry. He ordered a search. His phone rang. It was the captain. "Vic number two's fingerprints were in the database," He said. "He got busted for cocaine three years prior. I talked to his bondsman. Says an artist by the name of John Gamble put up security for him." At the sound of the name Proctor audibly swallowed. He wondered if the captain had heard.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
