Two, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is thinking about the viability of augmenting his lavish Fiction Corpus with some really short christmas stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I think highly of the prospect of employing English as the world's second language. I do doubt the unimaginative process by which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Refining a person's adeptness with a language isn't like developing a more flexible variety of bamboo. A language - a living tongue - isn't just an instrument that you can teach yourself to wield with a greater amount of precision. A common language can not be unlinked from the prevailing culture of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to deprive him of its cultural context. A proper teacher has to have a strategy for introducing it; the perceptive pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe words based on a particular corpus, a body of writing of varying scope and consistency. This corpus can contain anything from a book about literature to some real mind control fiction. I burned many candles creating my "insignificant" Fiction Corpus in order to form a distinct class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have cut them down, reframing them - not just to teach English vocabulary but to defend the human soul, and to goad that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Two

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word two in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word two, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word two is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Two in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"No: his real father was the Commandant's brother. He was run over by a speeding train. Walking home with two of his friends along the railroad tracks, all of a sudden, a speeding train was right in front of them. His father pushed his friends to either side - that was it: he was gone. Andrew's mother also died a bizarre death. She opened the furnace damper to keep the warmth inside. She put the kids to bed - then she went to sleep. When Andrew's father came home, she was cold; so was Andrew's younger brother. They were dead - from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Verse 265 from the chapter called Adolescence

At one point, a stomach virus was going around. Sapper was hit two days before Jesus felt it. The night before your father got sick, he made himself sausages and ate them with ketchup. A week earlier, Jesus had felt a craving for ketchup, and, ordering Sapper to buy as many different varieties as he could find, Jesus had been given mild and spicy ketchup, ketchup in glass jars and plastic bottles, ketchup with and without onions, and so forth and so on. Jesus had the virus for a good four days: the first day was the worst: that night he vomited four times. The second day was better, but he still couldn't eat anything. The third day, Jesus was still confined to bed, but at least he was eating. On the fourth day, Jesus thought he was fine. That night, he ate sausages with ketchup. Waking up in the wee hours of the morning, Jesus vomited and felt his stomach tumbling and twisting and turning around. The feeling was gut-wrenching. Jesus concentrated all his psychophysical effort into calming his stomach. It worked, but it also required all of Jesus's attention. He couldn't sleep. When he moved a finger, his stomach rebelled. If his eyelids twitched, he lost concentration. Jesus had to give up. Suffering great pain, he thought to himself: they've poisoned me! like they did to that Ukrainian.

Verse 478 from the chapter called Arms

Going back, I found yet another strange and delightful specimen: the boletus luteus, the mud-colored mushroom: the unctuous borowik. There was not one, but two sticky brown pilei - two stems connected to one foot. I put them (or it) into my bag, next to the Cossack.

Verse 16 from the chapter called Bohemia

Usage of Two in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

It was small and far away, more than once across the room - the distance doubling - but thanks to the wonders of reflection, there it was in front of me: it was there in all its magnificent beauty, perched on top of two lovely black pedestals, arching beautifully to one side as one leg rose and fell, arching to the other side and holding, holding before returning to its even posture.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 9, Intoxication, Paragraph 6, Clauses 3-4

They were able to use the defendant's argument against her, and turning their judgment on her - even though hers was not the burden of proof - they decided how lovely and just it would be to drown her defense to death by inundating their own decision with frivolous remarks. Mindful of nothing but their own supremacy, the opinion of the Supreme Court seems to be, without question, a comprehensive network of sweeping proclamations and inappropriate accusations, undeniably interspersed here and there with a ridiculous supposition and irrelevant predictions - all couched, unquestionably, in the most superfluous and grandiose verbiage - that serves irrefutably to obscure its own hollowness and its lack of any rational argument, which, thanks to the genius of our Federal system, has incontrovertibly worked a deep and scarring hardship on our tradition of jurisprudence.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 17, The Role of the Judicious Mind, Paragraph 3, Clauses 1-2

NIKE: I'm workin' on it. This is definitely a two-pronged attack. The Internet is one market. But clubs and bars are another - not to mention stores and restaurants, of course. But all of them will have the choice to create their own meads: that's the beauty of it. And they can commission whatever kind of mead they want: I'll design it for them. It'll fit whatever theme they've got going - and: it'll taste good too.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 15, Dealing with Grand Schemes, Paragraph 16

NIKE: Yeah, you better believe I'm talkin' about her.

ANDY: I'm trying not to think about that.

NIKE: Didn't you tell me she lives in Holland Park?

ANDY: That's right.

NIKE: She's got two kids?

ANDY: Yeah, two little girls.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 10, The Male Dilemma, Paragraphs 21-26

Now between these two feelings, eros and romance, we have the stuff of poetry - or, at least, most of it - which leads us to the mind, with which we show 'attention,' the care and courtesy that betrays our feelings. This attention is based on ties of kinship, whether these be real or desired, and, consequently, attention is what makes us 'members of a family.'

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 7, The Seventh Day, Part 1, Strength & Security Sector Reform, Section 2, Facing a Choice, Paragraph 4

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

The girl giggled. "She fought with our father. He's very old-fashioned. Pepsi always had a different opinion. When she started working for Avon, it was the last straw. He didn't like the idea of her selling make-up."

"What did I do to get on his good side?"

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring a man who never really grew up

Clark tried to contact one of the people on his list. The address led him down a squalid alley. Shephard feared for his shoes. Clark sighed. The man wasn't home. The landlady said she didn't know if he would ever be back. "If you find him," she told Shephard, "tell him he owes me three months of rent."

Clark suggested they wait at the hotel for a few days.

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring a woman from a Turkish minority in China

Clark held up the phone in his hand. "This," he explained, "is a satellite phone. If he calls this phone, he will be charged three hundred Bo per minute. We might as well hang Christmas lights on his neck that spell out 'subversive.'"

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

GREY GOOSE: (to FLETCHER) It's over.

FLETCHER: What do you mean?

GREY GOOSE: I'm done.

FLETCHER: We were just getting started. Mother hasn't even seen us doing it.

GREY GOOSE: It's been made perfectly clear to me that I'm not welcome.

FLETCHER: After all the effort we put into making her work - and the mess we left.

GREY GOOSE: It's a damn shame.

FLETCHER: The least we can do is clean her up before Mother gets a chance to use her. Wouldn't you want her to be clean before you start sticking things inside her?

ALICE: What are you two talking about?

FLETCHER: A gift that will give my mother great pleasure.

– ACT I, lines 1122-1131

LUKE: What's the difference between the two?

MS. JACKSON: Bounty families are descendant from the original Bounty mutineers, who settled on Pitcairn Island-

FLETCHER: With their Tahitian consorts. I'm sorry. I meant their Tahitian wives. And their Tahitian slaves. I mean, their male Tahitian friends.

MS. JACKSON: The Pitcairner families are descendant-

FLETCHER: From three adventurers - to be more precise, from two ack-willy whalers and a soldier-of-fortune.

LUKE: That's a ridgy-didge pedigree. Too right!

FLETCHER: It gets better. Being a direct descendant of my namesake, Fletcher Christian, the illustrious chief of the mutiny on the Bounty, I am therefore descendant from the ancient rulers of the Isle of Man.

LUKE: A reg'lar Pommy!

FLETCHER: My father's mother was a Quintal. That means half of him is descendant from a drunken scoundrel who set his ship on fire, drove his wife to suicide, and threatened to kill the entire island population. That's not the side of the story we like to tell. We prefer the story of how John Jackson turned to Christianity and taught his children to read and write. Jackson, I'll have you know, was a Christian before he became a Jackson. He changed his name the moment the British rediscovered the island. My mother admires his cowardice so much, she did the same thing.

– ACT I, lines 93-101

ALICE: Interesting.

KOKOMO: Hardly.

ALICE: Why did he leave?

KOKOMO: He was looking for a warmer climate.

ALICE: That makes sense.

KOKOMO: Instead he found my mother. She is a Catholic. He is nothing. She tried to beat it into him. He started beating back. It got bloody. I had never fit well into the tribal network. It was easy for me to leave. Nevertheless, I'd give anything to go back and farm my own land.

– ACT I, lines 840-845

(MS. JACKSON exits.)

FLETCHER: I'm glad you're on my side.

KOKOMO: Don't worry, Fletch. We'll get your parents back together again. I don't know how we'll do it, but we will.

FLETCHER: I wish I could have as much faith as you.

KOKOMO: You can have as much faith as me. It's easy.

FLETCHER: It's not.

KOKOMO: There are two ways down a hill: the hard way - on one's own two feet - or the easy way.

FLETCHER: On one's back?

KOKOMO: Let gravity roll you down.

FLETCHER: You mean God. If only it were that simple.

– ACT I, lines 1333-1341

FLETCHER: Your room?

KOKOMO: It's where the boys aren't.

FLETCHER: Running away from the boys: you two are such girls.

– ACT I, lines 717-719

Usage of Two in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

What was I talking about? Oh yeah. We were holy. The triplets. We Orazio brothers. The Orazi. And the other guys. The Curiazi. We had a mission. To stop the war between our two governments. It was fate. It was what we had to do.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story based on good intentions coming straight out of Roman mythology

Mark was so fast he could go up Update Street, hit his half of Hillview, and come back down to Profile before Bill the regular guy on Rural Route 2 could get two bites off his sandwich which he usually ate halfway down Download Street so he could enjoy the view of the football field.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story about something unthinkable that unfortunately exists in real life

So I was born one of three identical twins. Or triplets, I guess. Cause twins are two. So that was a big deal back then. I mean, triplets are born all the time now what with all the genetic testing and whatnot but back then it was a big deal. Cause it wasn't just our town that had the triplets. It was another town like right next door. You know. Two sets of triplets in one year. That was a big deal.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story without that much killing coming straight out of Roman mythology

A retired mathematician lived on Profile directly across from the hill. He specialized in probability theory. One day while sipping a cup of tea in his kitchen he realized that two mail trucks coming down the hill on two separate roads that met at the bottom and had to stop to service boxes at the exact same spot could potentially be rolling down the hill at the same time and if one carrier wasn't careful enough could be observed engaging in a significant but nevertheless comical collision. The professor happened to be, as Mark knew from his mail, an amateur photographer. He set about recording the times at which he observed the carriers proceeding up the hill and the times at which he observed them coming down. He noticed that if both regular carriers were on duty a collision would never occur. Both of them were too slow. But if one particularly fast substitute carrier, namely Mark, was coupled with the other regular carrier, namely Bill, he could calculate the probability of a collision based on the times at which he saw them climbing up the hill. This excited the professor immensely.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story about things we don't like to think about that unfortunately exist in real life

My father never lied to my mother about going up to see his old girlfriend. He lied to me. So I wouldn't say anything. So my mother could find out about it later. From the receipts. It was part of the grand scheme. To bring things to a head. To back up the toilet of their lives. To bring up the festering crap they had tucked away in their basement all these years. Like the accusation that my father had raped my mother. On some night twelve years ago. When she had said no. And he had done it anyway. I wanted to laugh but my wife was there. Her father raped her mother. Allegedly. My wife is convinced its true. Despite only having heard one side of it. If it were as bad as it sounds I doubt her parents would still be together. But they are. Like my parents. They've reconciled. For all intents and purposes they're a happily married couple. They hold hands in the street. While my wife wont sleep with me. Because on some rainy afternoon two years ago I told her I wanted to rape her.

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
