Apartment, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal refuses to debate the idea of enhancing his monolithic Fiction Corpus with truly interactive stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the soundness of legislating English as everybody's second language. I don't think highly of the debilitating system by which English is presented for study.Pointer

Improving one's command of a language isn't like pioneering a more flexible variety of bamboo. A language - a common tongue - isn't merely a tool that you can learn to use with a greater amount of precision. A living language can't be pulled from the prevailing culture of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to rob her of its cultural context. A good instructor must create a strategy for introducing it; the discerning student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words on the basis of a specific corpus, a set of written works of varying size and consistency. Such a corpus might include everything from a book about literature to a lot of elaborate fictions. I created my "remarkable" Fiction Corpus to form a different class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drafted a million words and I have sorted them, reshaping them - not merely to teach English vocabulary but to promote the human spirit, and to provoke that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Lots of people go on road trips. Not everybody criss-crosses Europe in 46 days. Especially not with a complete stranger.

I knew naturism was popular in many parts of Europe and as an artist who had worked on body acceptance for his entire career I was keen on documenting some small part of it. Lo and behold, I found a very important part of it hiding in Poland. Her name was Margo.

I had an American passport. She didn't. And the fact that I was driving a car with Polish license plates gave her ample opportunity to point out the difference. It wasn't just police and border guards who ethnically profiled me. Regular folks did it too. One campsite owner didn't shake my hand until he realized I was an American. By that point, I had trained myself to use a simplified English, something that more closely resembled what passes for a lingua franca in Europe these days. Something Margo was trying very hard to master.

Each man grows up with his own kind of poverty. Even if he's got a warm house and plenty of food and a soft bed and plenty of entertainment, there's always something that a man needs. Sometimes he just needs to be listened to, if only by the birds and the trees, but preferably by another man, even if he's an artist from America who isn't very good at listening. By learning how to listen, we learn how to cooperate. By cooperating, we build a better world. In a better world, there are no devils to abuse us. A better world doesn't lend itself to abuse because a better world is populated by people who have learned how to listen.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Apartment

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word apartment in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word apartment, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word apartment is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Pronunciation of ApartmentMargo on a trampoline

I have yet to publish a pronunciation for the word apartment.

Definition of ApartmentMargo on a trampoline

An apartment is a piece of a larger building that you can own. Otherwise it's a place in a town or a city where you've gotten permission to do certain things like cook your own food or sleep in your own bed or at least somebody's else bed. Sometimes people don't have or don't need to get permission to do these things, especially if the larger building is otherwise empty or is considered too unattractive for respectable people to own. It can also be used to describe something related to the idea of a building in which people own or appreciate the use of apartments.

Usage of Apartment in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"No," said Jesus. "My grandmother, like most of my family, lives here now. My father owned the apartment after she died, but, when the authorities discovered that my father was also dead, they took possession."

Verse 609 from the chapter called Security

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to anyone living on Earth, terrorists were plaguing Mars. Two years before the Interplanetary Trade Center was demolished, five explosions over a period of two weeks devastated apartment buildings around Centropolis. Two hundred and ninety-three people were killed. The Revolutionary government began a massive security operation to safeguard more than thirty thousand apartment blocks around the city. The terrorists were undaunted. In the next few years, they took hostages in theatres; they blew up space ships in orbit around Mars; and finally, they attacked a school and took hundreds of Martian children hostage. Too many of them were killed, people said: they blamed the government.

Verse 312 from the chapter called Adolescence

Without license to buy more weapons, Jesus had to be very stingy. Not till he signed on with SECURITA did Jesus gain the privilege, thanks to that security firm's contract, of being able to buy whatever he wanted (which the firm even tried to subsidize, but Jesus, more often than not, paid from his own pocket, which prevented his so-called superiors from requisitioning his equipment). In fact, it was during his first few months of tenure with SECURITA that Jesus found Baron Cohen-Krupnik with bullets in his head. Through a fluke, he was the first one to arrive at the crime scene. The landlord who had rented Baron the apartment also happened to be an old friend of Stalin's. Jesus was able to take photographs, which he later used to convince your mother, Zoe Guderian, that her fiancé's family was not up to snuff, not that she ever thought they were (for various reasons), but, after seeing poor Baron with bulletholes in his head (someone she had once had the displeasure of socializing with), she was convinced, despite her better judgment, to continue her relationship with Sacha Cohen-Krupnik, just so she could spy for your father, which she did, with painstaking effort, going so far as to marry the bastard, which your father deeply regretted.

Verse 420 from the chapter called Arms

By the time your father found the Internet, there were terrorists in Wroclaw. They were fighting elements of the 2nd Infantry Brigade and Silesian Air Squadron. The search engine's homepage was full of interesting information about terrorism: like, for instance, where to go in case of injury from terrorist attack, how to protect yourself and your beloved family from poison gas, what to do in case a terrorist comes crashing into your apartment, et cetera, et cetera. The only thing it didn't tell you is where the terrorists were - obviously, such information would be redundant if a terrorist were already crashing into your apartment, but if that terrorist were crashing into your neighbor's apartment, it might be helpful to know that. As it was, there was nothing: no information concerning the terrorists' whereabouts. They were in Wroclaw: that's all you needed to know. According to Lucius, we had already known that; we had let them in ourselves. In the end, it was all the same: after all, terrorists were everywhere.

Verse 744 from the chapter called Adolescence

Jesus himself was without Polish papers. The only documents he possessed were the American passports it seemed as if he were collecting: the one that was issued when he was thirteen years old - so goddamn long ago - and yet, not so long ago - which was now invalidated, and the one he had recently received in the mail from the U.S. Consulate in Prague. With those documents in hand, and Stalin's contract, there had been absolutely no problem getting a work permit. SECURITA couldn't afford to wait for its foreign consultants. As for a residency visa, Jesus had a reason to be in Poland. Thanks to the weathering of time, and a little bit of Jesus's own effort, the first stamp on his old passport - the one he received while entering Poland at the age of thirteen - or, rather, more specifically, the year of entry which that stamp specified - was illegible. Nobody could prove that Jesus had been sitting at his dead grandmother's apartment for so long without even saying 'Hello' to the town clerk. His residency visa was approved - no questions asked.

Verse 157 from the chapter called Security

Usage of Apartment in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Those days return to me with sudden clarity now that Nike came to remind me of them. And for some reason, I find myself yearning for those dirty sofas - not for that disgusting carpet, mind you, and definitely not for that sticky kitchen. That apartment was unnecessarily filthy. But those sofas were different. They were the ultimate seats of decadence. They were creatures completely unrepentant. Like the ancient Romans, we entertained from the couch. We would eat, drink, smoke and sleep and always reclining.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 6, Doing Business, Paragraph 9

Very well, if you must know, it begins with Nike in his bed. His apartment was ruined: everything: books, utensils, records, papers were all lying on the floor in heaps. Furniture was knocked over and even broken. Upholstery was ruined - rugs thrown together in piles. Nike must have thought the police had done it.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 4, The Fourth Day, Part 1, Our Constitution & Constitutional Reform, Section 1, Losing Oneself, Paragraph 7

NIKE: It's great. It's like the Bois de Vincennes, only better. Instead of parking in vans, they're parked in beamers. They're the most expensive street girls in Paris. They're usually pretty clean - plus you get to go to an apartment. That's a sweet part of town: millionaire alley. We should drive by. The best thing is: we can roll up. If we don't like what we see, we roll away. It's not far from here. We just have to get out of this Bologna...

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 21, Anal Sex, Paragraph 40

And we had a patron! a generous benefactor! whom we would pay for a gift of cold food in a plastic bag. O great man! We met you and greeted you on the campus! We paid you tribute in your atrium! In the early hours of the morning we saluted you! We thanked you for the gift of sportula: the gift of daily bread: the cold food we eagerly burned with butane: oh, how lustrously it burned! What a gentle, sparkling magic it was. And then how quietly we pursued oblivion...lying on those sofas, those hideously dirty sofas in that disgusting apartment.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 6, Doing Business, Paragraph 8

INDIE: You know why? It's because of that apartment of yours. How do you expect to get anything done when you are always commuting? You should come live here with us; we have an empty bedroom. And why would we have an empty bedroom if not for you?

ANDY: Thank you, but...

"Where's the letter?"

"Probably in his desk."

"At the gallery?"

"At his apartment."

"What apartment?"

"The one right below us."

"In this building?"

Proctor spent a sleepless night at the station. The next day he was questioned for hours by an FBI consultant. In the evening he snuck out. He made his way to John's apartment. He had to wait. John was under protective custody. When it was dark Proctor climbed up the fire escape. He tapped on John's window.

John appeared. He opened the window. "Thank God," he said. "I didn't know what happened to you." He helped Proctor inside. He started kissing him.

It would have been cheaper too but I was used to my own apartment. That's what I told Barack. I never liked him much. Obama was always goofing off. He was a trickster. He was fun to be around. Barack was always in a bad mood. It could have been partly because of Obama. I don't know.

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
