Buckle, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal refuses to consider the concept of supplementing his ponderous Fiction Corpus with more stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I regard highly the concept of exploiting English as a common language for the world. I don't regard highly the ordinary scheme by which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Polishing a person's artfulness with a language isn't like launching a brighter bead. A language - a common language - isn't merely a tool that you can learn to use with a greater amount of precision. A spoken tongue can't be severed from the competing values of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to rob her of its cultural context. A good instructor has to prepare a plan for introducing it; the wisest pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words on the basis of a specific corpus, a body of written works of various scope and consistency. This corpus can include anything from a book about literature to some real bedtime stories. I suffered many a sleepless night creating my "outsized" Fiction Corpus in order to form a distinct kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have constructed a million words and I have broken them down, reshaping them - not just to teach the English tongue but to reveal the human soul, and to provoke that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Europe, the summer of 2011. Twelve countries. 46 days. One car. One tent. One man. One woman he's just met.

Though as an artist I had been working on body acceptance since the start of my career, and as a one-time practicing figure model was used to being nude in a social setting, I had been left largely unexposed to the community of naturists and nudists working towards the same goal of promoting the human being. Visiting nude beaches and resorts along the East Coast and participating in events organized around New York by Young Naturists America, I was left hungry for more and had come to Europe to see things from their side of the pond. Margo was my introduction.

I had an American passport. She didn't. And the fact that I was driving a car with Polish license plates gave her ample opportunity to point out the difference. It wasn't just police and border guards who ethnically profiled me. Regular folks did it too. One campsite owner didn't shake my hand until he realized I was an American. By that point, I had trained myself to use a simplified English, something that more closely resembled what passes for a lingua franca in Europe these days. Something Margo was trying very hard to master.

There were times during our trip when I thought there might not be a happy ending. There were times when disaster was close and I wondered whether I hadn't made a mistake. I wondered whether fear, anger or sadness might triumph and one of us would have to finished the journey alone. Though I dangled from the cliffs of Normady I was saved. Though the lights went out I rode on. Though I ran the tires down to the wire I was okay. We drove home in one piece. We came home happy. We had started the process of learning how to listen and the sound of it was beautiful. We could be sure that we were ready to conquer the devils that abuse us no matter how long it would take.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Buckle

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word buckle in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word buckle, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word buckle is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Definition of BuckleMargo on a trampoline

A buckle is usually a piece of metal that connects two other things, usually one end of a strip of fabric or leather to the other end that goes around your waist or your ankle but sometimes it connects two separate bits of fabric for example on either side of a shoe. It can also refer to the act of making that connection by use of such an artifact, which often involves bending the fabric or otherwise distorting its shape. The word can also be used to refer to acts of bending or breaking under pressure that are completely unrelated to fastening a fabric.

"You're lying to me, bitch: come back here!" Luka unbuckled his seat belt, he unlocked his door and then he opened it. He jumped out and ran around the car. It took a while before he caught up with her.

He grabbed her cloak. Then he grabbed her arm and caught it. He wrapped his other arm around her and clamped her mouth shut.

I tried the jacket. Without too much difficulty, I got it on. I was a little worried at first, but after a few rotations I was satisfied. The sleeves were, in fact, a bit too short, but I had a solution. I removed my cufflinks, and, turning my cuffs down, I buckled only the first pair of holes. The shirt cuffs were large enough for me to fold back over the jacket sleeves, adding a nice roguish element to the costume. I found a cummerbund, but, after putting it on, I was afraid it wasn't going well with my cuffs. I decided to check in the mirror, so I turned to the door.

Turning back to the contents of the closet, I noticed how many suits Albert had. He had black ones and gray ones, pinstriped and plaid ones, white, blue and purple, and even some red ones - simply wonderful, I thought. How marvelous! How I wouldn't mind having a collection like this: hats and suspenders, neckties galore, socks of all colors and cufflinks and collars, bowties and buckles worth hundreds of dollars - and shoelaces! by color and length and fabric and thickness, all had been laid in their separate places. It was magnificent. The shirts too were arranged by color and fabric: synthetics on one side and natural fabrics on the other. It seemed like that closet contained almost everything a gentleman could ever need. The only thing I couldn't find was a tailcoat. And of course, the shoes must have been somewhere else.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Luka pulled the handle on his own door. It wouldn't open. It was locked. Luka unlocked it. He opened it. He tried to jump out. His seat belt held him back. He unbuckled it. He got out. He saw Barbara disappear into the forest. She had run around the car. Her instinct was to continue heading in the same direction. If she had only gone the way she had come, she might have been spared. The Reine was a hundred yards to the east through a dark stand of trees.

The egret started fiddling around with something. It was a child's ribbon. It took the fabric in its mouth and flew away. Morimoto wondered. He ordered his men to search the rooftops once more. They found a piece of gabardine woven into a large nest. There was some kind of buckle on it. The laboratory found traces of a victim's skin.

She asked, "How will you carry your swords now? Your buckle is broken. My horse lies dying. If you try to leave me behind, I will stab you in the back." Gog sympathized with her. She seemed like a decent woman. He asked her what she wanted.

She lowered her head. She aimed her eyes at Gog as if they were spears. In a deep voice, she said, "Make me your sword-bearer."

Tatum whispered, "Alright." She leaned down. Gracefully, she unbuckled her knee breeches from the bottom up. She undid the last clasp. The fabric dropped. Shaq smiled. With one quick motion, Tatum removed her halter top. She pulled her panties down, wiggling out of them until they dropped. Naked but for her shoes, she beckoned Shaq forward.

The women left the gravity carousel. They hopped across Oda Plaza. Tatum leapt ahead. She made sure the .17 g force was having the appropriate effect on Miss April's body. She watched her bosom bouncing slowly. She said, "You're pretty good in those heels." Miss April smiled bashfully.

Tatum tried crop tops and halternecks. She found tight sweaters. Miss April suggested she buy a set of knee-breeches-one with buckles all the way down the sides, another with buttons.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
