Community, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal refuses to weigh the notion of amplifying his extraordinary Fiction Corpus with his top science fiction yet; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't reject the soundness of using English as a universal standard. I don't think highly of the formalistic strategy by which the English language is taught.Pointer

Reenforcing one's adeptness with a language isn't like launching a smoother paper. A language is not just a tool that you can teach yourself to employ with a greater amount of precision. A living language can not be disengaged from the shared logic of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to rob him of its cultural context. An informed teacher has to develop a plan for introducing it; the wisest student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words on the basis of a specific corpus, a body of written language of varying size and consistency. Such a corpus can include everything from a book about literature to some really contemporary realistic fiction. I watched many nights pass laboring on my "lowly" Fiction Corpus to form a unique class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have sculpted a million words and I have inspected them, reshaping them - not merely to teach the English tongue but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to provoke that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

Four days after I arrived in Poland, the largely Catholic country was celebrating Corpus Christi, complete with solemn processions down the street. Three days later I had made a solemn vow that if given the chance to express it, I would show love to a woman I had only just met.

I had come to Europe to document people practicing naturism. Preliminary arrangements had been made to meet with an Egyptian nudist visiting the Continent and there was some kind of Pan-European gathering scheduled to take place in Croatia. I had arranged for an assistant to come along with me to help with anything I needed, but when her passport was stolen the night before we were supposed to leave, my plans went awry. I decided on something less ambitious. I would visit a naturist sauna in the city of Bielsko-Biala, Poland which I had just found on the internet. When I got there, I met Margo.

I had an American passport. She didn't. And the fact that I was driving a car with Polish license plates gave her ample opportunity to point out the difference. It wasn't just police and border guards who ethnically profiled me. Regular folks did it too. One campsite owner didn't shake my hand until he realized I was an American. By that point, I had trained myself to use a simplified English, something that more closely resembled what passes for a lingua franca in Europe these days. Something Margo was trying very hard to master.

Do unto others as you would have done unto you. But how to judge what we would want done to us if we've never been in somebody else's shoes? If we've never been abandoned by our mother, how do we treat somebody who has? Somebody who seems to constantly suffer the repurcussions of it? Margo and I had 46 days and 6,000 miles to try on each other's shoes. We had one car and one tent in which to hear each other's words. We learned to cooperate. We started learning how to listen.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Community

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word community in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word community, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word community is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Definition of CommunityMargo on a trampoline

A community is primarily the atmosphere created by a group of people who reside or otherwise exist in actual or virtual proximity with one another and who probably interact closely on a regular basis although this is not always the case. Community can also refer to the group itself or to the place in which the group is located. It can also describe a kind of artifact, act, time, fuel, or person related to such a group.

What we lack; or, the people you should be able to trust but can't. - Melanie S.

Usage of Community in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"We survived how many regimes? Countless regimes from either side: we did it by sticking to our farms, Jesus, by keeping our heads up at the plough, by never letting go. That's how we survived. That's how the Old Republic lived on: in the hearts and minds of ploughmen. When you're in the hills, Jesus, men still use horses: machines would tip over. But those men are small farmers, Jesus - not big. Now what's happening? The climate's changed? All of a sudden, we can make it big on the world market? Sure, but let's not kill a way of life. Let's keep the good. You think these people around here want to be my friends? My neighbors? No: of course not! But: back in the day, we had business with each other: that's what makes for a community. And now what? There's no business: who could give a rat's ass what you do or who you are?

Usage of Community in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

ANDY: Well, that's too bad: I came here for some roast beef and I'm going to get it.

WAI: Good evening, gentlemen. What would you like to drink?

ANDY: Do you have a clean potato vodka?

WAI: I'll have to check.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 1, Greenery & Land Reform, Section 1, Love, Hope, Desire and Suspicion, Paragraphs 27-30

ANDY: You are slavish, Macy. You are a slave to feeling: both body and mind. To illustrate: your body wants me, right? And your mind willingly follows - but - if I understand correctly - your mind also wanted my sister, but then your body was unwilling to follow.

MACY: It's not that simple.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 1, Greenery & Land Reform, Section 2, The Risk of Being Labelled Insensitive, Paragraphs 43-44

And I'm not about having sex with you. Unfortunately, you need sex. I could give you as much intellectual, emotional, whatever kind of intimacy you want - except sex. And you need sex, don't you? Well, I don't blame you: what man doesn't want sex? But, when desire springs from personal appetite, no matter how much love you give, your desire is selfish. That kind of sex is inherently selfish. That's why: I'm trying to deny it.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 1, Greenery & Land Reform, Section 5, Surrendering the Debate, Paragraph 6, Clauses 3-9

ANDY: If not, I'll take the next best thing and water.

MACY: I'll have a pint of Guinness.

ANDY: Thank you.

WAI: Thank you. I'll be right back.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 1, Greenery & Land Reform, Section 1, Love, Hope, Desire and Suspicion, Paragraphs 31-34

ANDY: You don't know: because Gianni gave you hope: because he gave you a story you like to believe: I am convinced of that.

MACY: Did he lie to me or what?

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Junior prayed. "Lord, I have committed, as you must know, acts which, by the local standards of my community, would probably be considered depraved. I fully admit my licentiousness, as You would no doubt call it, was practiced on a more or less biblical scale. I realize now my debauchery served no purpose other than my own self-gratification, though other people's pleasure was enhanced through my efforts. Never mind. I'm sorry. If You can find it in your vast, not totally congested heart to forgive me, I'm begging you, let me marry Nyota without punishing her for my transgressions. I love her." Junior broke down and cried.

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story featuring an affront to morality

"It's not healthy-not for this community. Do can't be the only woman pregnant. Every man needs to do his part."

"How do you know Bei isn't too old?"

"That's my point. Somebody ought to be testing. Her unique qualities have to be passed down."

"Is that what this is about?"

– from “How Tae & Bo Took Over the World and Kung & Fu Didn't,” an apocryphal bible story featuring women with competing interests

"I'm not talking about a war chest. Take it from your personal account if you have to."

"My what?"

"This is all for your sake, Clark. You are going to be the toast of the entire Washington intelligence community."

"You can't talk me into this."

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring a guy with an easy smile

Shephard smiled. "This is a small community. We should visit the sites, get to know some people. We'll talk about Beijing, a free Tibet, organic food. With any luck, we'll bump into a few revolutionaries."

"This is not smart."

"When would that be?"

Uzumaki paused. He studied the woman's peeved expression. He said, "I have no idea, Ms. Read."

Tatum smirked. "I'll have to keep my receipts."

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

LUKE: Why not? You've lived in peace for so long.

FLETCHER: If by peace you mean we've committed just about every crime except murder.

ALICE: Is that true?

MS. JACKSON: My son likes to exaggerate.

FLETCHER: Consider it. In a community of such close quarters with nowhere to go, the only thing you can't ignore is a dead body. Besides that, anything goes.

MS. JACKSON: Feel free to ignore my son's imagination.

FLETCHER: The next time I'm selected for a jury, I'm not going to lie when they ask me if I've ever been accused or been the victim of a crime.

ALICE: You lied?

FLETCHER: I said no.

MS. JACKSON: When have you been the victim of a crime?

Usage of Community in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

"It's funny." Indiana wagged her finger. "There is another thing we did on St. Luca. The whole village would start to make a chair. One family would make one leg. Another family would make another. It was a way of strengthening the community. Like the apple, we had to do something every day - even if it was only a bit of sanding. We couldn't finish until Christmas. When it was done, we would put the chair inside the church. If somebody was brave enough to step on it, he would be able to see who in the village is the witch.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that might calm one's sense of unease depending on your outlook

I was ashamed of my mother. I wish I could say I grew out of it. I didn't. I got more ashamed of her as I grew older. It was partly my own fault. I kept my mother hidden so I wouldn't have to face questions about her. I didn't have the answers. I didn't know with absolute certainty which country she was from. I didn't want people to know what happened to her in London. I didn't want them finding out what she was doing in the United States. It was mostly cleaning houses. Sometimes she baked stuff for events in the Ukrainiain-American community. Great success.

– from “The Most Idiotic Actress,” a fictional story that represents the spirit of actual events as far as the author can tell

Sir Lewis was unperturbed. He offered Miss Day a deal. He would represent the community college in the next Olympiad. If they lost he would go away. If they won Miss Day would have to go on five dates with him.

"One date," said Miss Day.

– from “The Skirt on the Proctor,” a kid story about making the grade in an unforgiving world

The next year was the same thing. Sir Lewis was still in high school. Still the only member of the math club. Still put on the same community college team for the Olympiad. The Asian girl was back. It was infuriating. Even the proctor was wearing the same tight skirt.

Sir Lewis sucked it up. This would be his last year of humiliation. He was already accepted into his first choice for college. He had the scholarship. Pretty soon he was going to be a star.

– from “The Skirt on the Proctor,” a kid story about sticking together in an unforgiving world

The girl frowned. "What am I doing here?" she asked. "I go to school here. What about you?"

Sir Lewis didn't understand. "I thought you went to that community college. Did you transfer here?"

The girl frowned again. "I've always gone here. I was shoved on that other team cause our team was too crowded. It was full of upperclassmen. They've graduated."

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
