Events, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's meditating on the notion of expanding his awe-inspiring Fiction Corpus with further examples of fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the feasibility of implementing English as a global standard. I don't accept the sterile game plan by which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Enriching a person's deftness for a language isn't like bringing about a more accurate compass. A language - a living language - is not just an instrument that you can learn to manipulate with greater amounts of precision. A spoken tongue can not be ripped from the prevailing culture of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to deprive her of its cultural context. A proper teacher must have a blueprint for introducing it; the insightful pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language based on a specific corpus, a body of written works of varying size and consistency. They could include everything from a book about literature to some real kid stories. I created my "ponderous" Fiction Corpus to form a special class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drafted a million words and I have dissected them, reshaping them - not just to teach an American language but to be an advocate for the human spirit, and to prod that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Help End Civil Rights Abuse With ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

On Monday, I arrived in Europe. By Wednesday I had bought a car. By Friday I had met the woman who a few months later would end up having travelling 6,000 miles across Europe with me.

I had come to Europe to experience European naturism, a movement whose philosophy matched my aesthetic of body acceptance and whose organizational structure and leadership I had thought almost exclusively restricted to the western half of the continent. I was shocked to learn that naturism had an official home in Poland, a country not especially known for its liberal culture. I was less shocked to discover that the home was owned by a Dutchman, but even more shocked to learn that it had been largely built by Margo.

I had an American passport. She didn't. And the fact that I was driving a car with Polish license plates gave her ample opportunity to point out the difference. It wasn't just police and border guards who ethnically profiled me. Regular folks did it too. One campsite owner didn't shake my hand until he realized I was an American. By that point, I had trained myself to use a simplified English, something that more closely resembled what passes for a lingua franca in Europe these days. Something Margo was trying very hard to master.

I've never been married. I've never been divorced. I've never had kids. I've never lost my kids. That doesn't mean I can't try to understand somebody who has. By listening to Margo during our trip across Europe I started to consider her needs as if they were my own. I may not have been in a position to satisfy all of those needs, but I was able to shut up and put my own needs aside if I had to for at least 6,000 miles. We all need to be listened to and it is the one need that we all have a duty to satisfy. When somebody prays to another human, as a human you have a duty to listen. Humanity needs to start teaching itself that skill.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Events

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word events in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word events, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word events is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Events in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

He was afraid of God; he feared that God might abandon him halfway through to wherever he was going. God was capable of crushing His servant, whether God came in the form of an angry terrorist or in the form of poisoned ketchup - the ways were endless; the source, only one: Jesus knew he was in the hands of God, Whose potential capriciousness was always a threat. Jesus trusted Him though - at least for the time being. The greatness to which Jesus seemed to be hurtling was of use to God - why else would He put His servant through such trials? There was a reason. Jesus didn't think God desired anything but Man's love. That would be difficult: Man was like a proud woman: not one who is quick to admit her faults. God's plan, whatever it be, would have to be complicated - ingenious, no doubt, but constantly frustrated by Man's will. Like so many great warriors before him, your father had to remind himself not to place God on his side, but to place himself on God's. Jesus's will was allied. Whatever God's plan be, Jesus was glad to be of service. However, as soon as Jesus's actions began influencing world events to a significant extent, Jesus began to wonder: is this it? Is this the extent of God's purpose for me? Is this where my biography shall end?

Usage of Events in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

As you can imagine, recent events have been so disruptive that I've put all my other work on hiatus. I now have the freedom to apply my industry to subjects more conducive to my environment. And if I can do nothing to cure Albert of his illness, I might as well try to cure somebody.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 2, Poetics, Paragraph 1

She is to blame for my illness. But she is not alone. I blame her husband as well. I accuse the pair of them. They have both conspired against me. They are both responsible for the inflammation of my memory, for the dwarfing of my consciousness. In the face of recent events, I have been supremely humbled. First, I was invited, and then, I freely entered into something much larger than myself: a world, a life shared by these two. A marriage, a beautiful marriage, when it's healthy and complete, sanctified by Church and united by God himself, is not a safe place for a human observer: it is too large a corporation, too overwhelming - especially when one must witness its final destruction. Then the immensity of the affair is made apparent: for only in passing will such immensity be seen. Otherwise, it stays mostly invisible, like the great horizon.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 4, Self-image, Paragraph 3

I called you and shared with you the terrible news after he fell into his coma - but you don't know what the doctors have said. There has been no improvement in Albert's condition, of course. There is no disputing the imminence of the end, but they have said there is a chance that Albert will wake before he dies, and Indiana is compelled: she must hold a constant vigil - except that she cannot do so by herself, and I have offered my own services; so I write to you today from his bedside, his quiet bedside, where I can peacefully contemplate his impassive body and the almost dream-like events of the past few days.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 2, Poetics, Paragraph 4, Clauses 1-3

This initially did not disturb me; I only began to worry after my repeated invitations and overtures being politely but habitually dismissed, I began to spot him and his friend at the very same events to which I had invited him in vain, a pattern which culminated at the local festival. There were no punching machines, no Reisenrad, no ice cream; but the crummy rides and amusements did carry the memory of better times, along with the petty consolation that the Viennese Prater was so much better than this dismal place. I challenged Macy to a duel on the air mattress. He said no, he didn't feel like it. After a few minutes, he took his friend instead.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 6, Third Party Intervention, Paragraph 3, Clauses 9-14

The events of the past few days were already incomprehensible when I had to live them. Now that they are part of my memory, they are made even more incomprehensible. Now that I know that all this time Albert was suffering from this inoperable recurrence of cancer, my recent memory has transmuted itself into a massive object of strange and irregular proportions.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 4, Self-image, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1-3

Usage of Events in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

I almost didn't go to see Barack. I was ashamed of the time he asked me to move in with him and I said no. It was right after Obama disappeared. There were skinheads crawling all over Moscow looking for Africans to beat. Barack thought it would be safer if we lived together. I didn't disagree. It would have been cheaper too but I was used to my own apartment. That's what I told Barack. I never liked him much. Obama was always goofing off. He was a trickster. He was fun to be around. Barack was always in a bad mood. It could have been partly because of Obama. I don't know.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story inspired by real events, though the details are fictional

I was ashamed of my mother. I wish I could say I grew out of it. I didn't. I got more ashamed of her as I grew older. It was partly my own fault. I kept my mother hidden so I wouldn't have to face questions about her. I didn't have the answers. I didn't know with absolute certainty which country she was from. I didn't want people to know what happened to her in London. I didn't want them finding out what she was doing in the United States. It was mostly cleaning houses. Sometimes she baked stuff for events in the Ukrainiain-American community. Great success.

– from “The Most Idiotic Actress,” a fictional story that represents the spirit of actual events as far as the author can tell

The following day the man came back. He asked me what I was talking to myself about and I told him I was mulling over current events. Politics in Moscow. He wanted to discuss it with me but I refused to talk to him unless he came inside. So he came inside. He said his name was Putin. Which I told him was similar to my own name Bongani. I asked him where his friend was and he told me that his friend had a lover. I told him I hoped he wouldn't say the same thing about me. We laughed over that. He left in good spirits.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story inspired by events that in some places were reported, though the details are fictional

The backed-up toilet in the basement stinks. Three weeks it's been festering. The cats won't go down there anymore. Luckily the wife doesn't have a choice. She had me haul down the old refrigerator. So she can store her mountains of yogurt. Let her suffer.

– from “The Backed-Up Toilet,” a literature story based on true events, namely the author's

The most idiotic actress in the history of cinema has got to be my mother. She was born to a family of Ukrainian farmers living in Romania. Or so I thought. It turned out it was the other country. The one whose name is always different. Moldavia. Moldova. Bessarabia. It doesn't matter. She married some kind of commie who ended up defecting to London. This was not my father.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
