Fields, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to weigh the possibility of extending his epic Fiction Corpus with some real noir fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I believe in the idea of enacting English as a common language for the world. I do reject the fatiguing scheme by which English is taught.Pointer

Boosting a person's finesse for a language isn't like making a larger dome. A language isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to exploit with a greater amount of precision. A common tongue can not be divided from the philosophical currents of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make pupils recite English is to strip them of its cultural context. A good instructor must develop a plan for introducing it; the discerning pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a set of written works of varying size and consistency. Such a corpus could include anything from a book about literature to the best fiction novels ever written. I suffered many a sleepless night creating my "whopping" Fiction Corpus in order to form a distinct class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have sculpted a million words and I have anatomized them, reframing them - not just to teach a language but to reveal the human spirit, and to provoke that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Help Replace Persecution With Truth in ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

When I arrived in Europe on the 20th of June, 2011, I had no plan and certainly no idea that by the end of the week I would be practicing photography with a woman I had never met, a naturist who had never before allowed herself to be photographed nude. It was the first of a whole series of firsts for the both of us.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

I was American. Freshly arrived in Europe and the new owner of a '97 Ford Escort made in Germany. The only thing I had to complain about was the fact that the owner's manual was in German. She was from Poland, and a German-language owner's manual for a car bought in Poland wasn't the only thing she had to complain about. Something as small as that didn't even register.

Margo and I spent over 40 days on the road. We started out as basically strangers, but in those 40 days we started listening to each other. We started teaching ourselves how to cooperate. Our journey across Europe may have ended, but our journey towards each other continues. No amount of fear, anger, sadness, disgust or anticipation can stop hope. Slowly but surely, we're learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

a collection of modern art prints and posters

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Fields

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word fields in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word fields, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word fields is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Definition of FieldsMargo on a trampoline

Fields are usually areas of high-volume low-lying natural growth or plots of ground designated for a certain agricultural use which may or may not be actively cultivated. They can also refer to sets of ideas and activities that share a common cultural root and which like agriculture require a certain discipline in order to maximize benefit. The word can also refer to a third person's habitual act of collecting things as if they were benefits even though they might not be perceived in that way.

Usage of Fields in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

More than one Russian oil company raised itself an independent or 'independent but attached' battalion, just to gain itself a seat in the Presidium. For almost the same reason, Krupnik Holding was doing more than its fair share of recruitment. The Polish government, beleaguered with its own problems, and having very little to do in the way of oil, was totally uninterested in Panzer-Tank's privateering. Apart from a certain Polish educational institution, which possessed oil fields in Baku thanks to an ancient and once lost but then recovered endowment, Krupnik Holding was the only organization in Poland involved in the war effort. But instead of just pumping money into Panzer-Tank's war chest, Krupnik Holding was also raising troops. The prevailing theory among Jesus's coterie, considering that Panzer-Tank's daughter Zoe was engaged to be married to Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's son, was that the Krupniks were trying to accumulate enough votes in the Presidium to offset the Russian influence that might hamper Panzer-Tank's own interests. Thus, the Guderians and Krupniks were allying against the Russian threat, a situation which resulted in one dead Baron Cohen-Krupnik with Russian bullets in his head. But this was only theory.

Verse 216 from the chapter called Security

"I didn't notice him. If he did, he only came to the Mass - didn't have time for the burial. He always has to work. You know why? 'Cause he has to have an estate! He had to build a manor house! He had to buy fields from everybody else. Why did he have to do that? Because he's a 'real farmer!' A Christian farmer! A natural farmer! He's seventy years old! He takes all day to move a barrow of hay from one side of the barn to the other. He falls over when his dogs try to hug him - even though they're starving. Seven dogs he has! Two bitches just gave birth: six in one litter and two in the other. I told him to give 'em away, but he said, 'No, I can't do that. They're good dogs: they're guard dogs. They know when somebody bad is trying to do something. When the neighbors come, they won't let them in: they know what they're about. I can't kill these dogs; I can't do that.' I said give 'em away, but does he listen? No! He just talks ridiculous things all day long!

Tae walked along Kwon's field. He saw his friend washing clothes in the river. He waved. His friend waved back. Tae approached the front of the ship. In the distance, he saw Hong and Do. He waved to them. They didn't see. He passed Kong and Jing's fields. He wondered whether Kong were in Jing's tent or Jing in Kong's. He thought, somebody should tell them to put their tents together-on the other hand, he concluded, they might not be ready for that.
