Fog, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's ruminating on the notion of compounding his unimpressive Fiction Corpus with a treatise on his own aesthetic; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't reject the potency of upholding English as a global lingua franca. I don't believe in the fatiguing form in which the English language is taught.Pointer

Reinforcing one's skills with a language isn't like promoting a more accurate catapult. A language - a spoken tongue - is not merely an instrument that you can learn to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A spoken tongue cannot be decoupled from the professed knowledge of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a pupil recite English is to cheat her out of its cultural context. A proper teacher must develop a technique for introducing it; the bravest pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language based on a specific corpus, a set of written works of varying scope and consistency. They could include anything from a book about literature to some panchatantra stories translated into modern English. I burned many candles forging my "jumbo-sized" Fiction Corpus to form a new genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have constructed a million words and I have codified them, reframing them - not simply to teach a tongue but to be an advocate for the human spirit, and to pressure that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Help Replace Persecution With Truth in ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

On Monday, I arrived in Europe. By Wednesday I had bought a car. By Friday I had met the woman who a few months later would end up having travelling 6,000 miles across Europe with me.

I had come to Europe to document people practicing naturism. Preliminary arrangements had been made to meet with an Egyptian nudist visiting the Continent and there was some kind of Pan-European gathering scheduled to take place in Croatia. I had arranged for an assistant to come along with me to help with anything I needed, but when her passport was stolen the night before we were supposed to leave, my plans went awry. I decided on something less ambitious. I would visit a naturist sauna in the city of Bielsko-Biala, Poland which I had just found on the internet. When I got there, I met Margo.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

There were times during our trip when I thought there might not be a happy ending. There were times when disaster was close and I wondered whether I hadn't made a mistake. I wondered whether fear, anger or sadness might triumph and one of us would have to finished the journey alone. Though I dangled from the cliffs of Normady I was saved. Though the lights went out I rode on. Though I ran the tires down to the wire I was okay. We drove home in one piece. We came home happy. We had started the process of learning how to listen and the sound of it was beautiful. We could be sure that we were ready to conquer the devils that abuse us no matter how long it would take.

a collection of modern art prints and posters

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Fog

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word fog in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word fog, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word fog is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Definition of FogMargo on a trampoline

Fog is something that can stop you from seeing what's five feet in front of you. It has a tendency to form around bodies of water or moist fields because most often the fog that obscures our vision is made of water although this is not always the case, nor is it necessary for the fog to actually obscure vision as the threat of preventing or otherwise hampering progress in a certain area or activity is what defines the substance. Fog can also refer to the act of obfuscation or it can describe a kind of artifact related to the obfuscating material.

Usage of Fog in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"The Lonely Planet," I said, "was a ghost wolf, with big, black eyes, a black nose, and blackness inside his ears. The rest of him was white and gray - except for his paws: those were black too - and inside his mouth, when he opened it, which wasn't very often, you could see his black tongue. Those were the parts that really existed: they were black because they were real - the rest of his body was like fog: if you tried to touch it, your hand would disappear inside - but, if you touched his nose, you would feel it, cold and wet on your fingertip. If you poked his eyes, you would feel the black jelly pushing your fingers back. If you stuck your finger inside his ear, you could stroke it; but the outside was like mist: if you tried to touch it, you would blow it away. Sometimes, when the wind blew really hard, you could see it blowing away his body."

Verse 157 from the chapter called Childhood

Simply put, at the time, I had no idea what I was doing or where it would lead. I was not in control, despite exhibiting extraordinary amounts of it - which may have been what allured that strange creature to me in the first place. It was a desperate creature I faced: a creature deprived of something I couldn't understand: deprived of self: lacking self. It was lost under a cloud of something unknowable: a fog of unhappy sunshine pollution: photochemical smog. It was confusion personified. It was infancy: unripe and unwilling to ripen - needy and restive - ungrateful, unapologetic, and unlearned - demanding - fascinating - irresistible - not yet a woman, it was a woman - it wanted to be a woman - it wanted to be a mother - it was unfit for motherhood - it deserved it, avoided it, wanted it, rejected it - it was a human being - it embraced it - it was everything at once - too much and too little - it lacked a little prudence to be honest, but, as the product of a genius Creator God, it was a work of art - mysterious when penetrated. It was not a simple woman, to the say the least.

Verse 440 from the chapter called Bohemia

"The young girl was frightened. 'If I let you lick my hand,' she said, 'my skin will burn.'

"'So it shall,' said the Wolf, 'but that, dear girl, is the price of truth.'

"'So be it,' she said. She held out her hand and the Wolf licked it.

"'You lie,' said the girl. 'It does not burn.'

"'I haven't yet told you the truth,' said the Wolf. 'The truth is: I did not kill your parents. I tried to warn them. They were lost in the fog, and your father, in his blindness, had led your mother to the side of a dangerous cliff. I tried to scare them away. I howled, but to no avail. Your father was too brave. He told your mother to stay by the side of the cliff while he took his gun and followed me. When he came back, he found your mother dead: a rock had fallen on her head. He took her back to your grandfather, but when he saw his daughter dead, he blamed your father for it. He locked him away, and took you from your crib.'

Verse 185-189 from the chapter called Childhood

"What about his claws?"

"They were mist."

"Could they hurt you?"

"No: they would dissipate. But don't forget: his paws were real. They could hit you in the face - and the Lonely Planet must've been strong: he was the fastest thing on four legs - or, four paws, as the case was. He was so fast, he could outrun his own body - swear to God: if you were lucky enough to see him running by, you would see his tail was bigger by about six or seven feet: he would look hungry, 'cause he was thin - but that was just his body trying to catch up, like a comet - that's what people said his name was, before he died."

"Comet?"

"That's right. Sometimes, he ran so fast, he lost the whole thing: he would look at his paws and realize his whole body was gone. That's when he'd have to turn around and find it. In fact, if you ever went to the woods and came across a low, thin cloud of mist, you had to wonder: was this left by the Lonely Planet? 'Cause if so, you had plenty to worry about: without his body, the Lonely Planet was almost invisible. The same was true in the morning fog: he blended in. That's when he struck."

Verses 160-165 from the chapter called Childhood

In those days, people didn't trust any central government. Americans didn't trust Washington. The Poles didn't trust Warsaw or Washington. Why should they have? They were fake cities, made by fiat. Nobody wanted to live there. Washington, D.C. had a foggy bottom; Warsaw had the worst soil around - what a perfect place for a capital! Berlin was a backwater town. What made them great? Power! Resources coordinated! Levée en masse! The spoils of war! Nothing else: they would still be villages. They are the most unnatural monsters ever created. People felt it. One by one, they started to wonder: why doesn't Washington, D.C. worry more about Washington, D.C.? Why doesn't Warsaw worry about Warsaw? What gives them the right to worry about everybody else? Why do we have capitals?

Usage of Fog in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

End this agitato. End this agitato. End this crescendo, diminuendo, crescendo poco a poco reaching the heights of human ecstasy, flittering our fingers, curling our toes and floating, floating down, too heavy to fly, shattering, and falling like rain in a million pieces down, to the ground, away from God's majesty - dashing madly across the keys my fingers flying ran the crescendo up in haste: no love to feel, no love to seize, my heart dying of disease - no time to waste - headlong falling into a pool and treading water, trying to swim, trying to leave but something pulling, pulling down, I forced my way up and out, climbing but slipping, falling, and then regaining myself and then stopping now...ritenuto...oh ritenuto: give me God's mercy: give me God's mercy: give me a moment now, end me my heartache now, end me my heartache now, please give, now: sotto voce, ben legato, molto più lento: o lullaby, sweet lullaby, bring me to sleep, sweet lullaby. Sing away my fears, put aside my tears - please, the Lord and I need to rest a while. O lullaby, bring a dream to me, let me see a dream, and regarding dreams, let me guard my dreams, let me live my dreams, let me, lullaby, dream - oh, what a beautiful melody fills my heart and wraps around me. How in love I was that night! How furious were my body, mind and soul arguing with each other. But, for a moment, playing this trio, life was quiet. My heart was tranquilized. My thoughts were suspended, my soul bathing in joy. And my eyes were drinking it. They came a long way to find themselves a watering hole, and finally, the time was right - no enemies nearby, no traps to catch me - everything was peaceful. And that was no surprise: for who should be standing guard? Indiana was! and may she continue in my dreams: for she was standing in front of me like a figure from the grandest of my dreams, like she were surrounded by fog, and only her own body could escape its grayness. She stood there in the doorway like grace itself, the light from the kitchen granting her man's electrical mandorla.

Gog and Magog watched the mud. They waited. The weather turned cold and windy. The fog cleared. Gog said, "I'm tired. Let's go."

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story about an ancient sword

Cresting the summit, Gog saw what seemed like a small valley. It was shrouded in fog. He was overjoyed. He was sure he would find the palace of the Bhag. He would stand on the bridge that spans the underworld. He would see his ancestors. Mithra would have no excuse. She would have to sleep with him.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story set in various parts of the Eurasian continent

Gog carved his way into the unknown. Mithra followed. Their breath was heavy; their steps, cautious. With an overwhelming sense of awe, Gog reached the end of the fog. His face fell. He was on the other side of the mountain. He had missed the palace. He turned around. He made several trips back and forth. He found nothing but a puddle of bubbling mud. He threw a rock into it. The rock went nowhere.

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
