Happening, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's contemplating the soundness of enhancing his hefty Fiction Corpus with some real sci fi; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I think highly of the viability of promulgating English as humanity's second language. I don't have faith in the unrewarding system by which English is taught.Pointer

Strengthening a person's adroitness with a language isn't like introducing a more resilient bow. A language - a spoken tongue - isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to use with a greater amount of precision. A language can not be ripped from the shared logic of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a student recite English is to strip her of its cultural context. A worthy teacher must develop a plan for introducing it; the perceptive pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe words based on a particular corpus, a body of written language of various size and consistency. This corpus can contain everything from a book about literature to a whole bunch of narrative fiction. I lost many a sleepless night laboring on my "vast" Fiction Corpus in order to form a special genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have devised a million words and I have separated them, reformulating them - not just to teach a language but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to encourage that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Help End Prejudice With Truth in ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

In June of 2011 I arrived in Europe for what I hoped would be a great adventure; my only concrete plan, to visit Croatia. By September I had driven 6,000 miles and visited 12 different countries, all with a woman I met on the first Friday of my trip.

Though I felt fully formed as a writer, and had been trained in visual language, it was my first time with a professional camera in my hands. I was just learning the ins and outs and had come to Europe to find as diverse a selection of subject matter as possible, preferably something that fit my aesthetic devotion to promoting body acceptance. Enter Margo.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

Margo and I spent over 40 days on the road. We started out as basically strangers, but in those 40 days we started listening to each other. We started teaching ourselves how to cooperate. Our journey across Europe may have ended, but our journey towards each other continues. No amount of fear, anger, sadness, disgust or anticipation can stop hope. Slowly but surely, we're learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Happening

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word happening in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word happening, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word happening is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Happening in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

In those days, many political things were happening. War broke out: a United Nations coalition led by the United States was fighting piracy in outer space. There was a man calling himself Sadatmo of Dhagbod; he was a leader of pirates threatening the trade routes between the Moon, where China dominated, and the Earth's orbit, which America controlled. For reasons beyond my scope of understanding at the time, this conflict involved Mars, which, apparently, had been supporting the pirates in their struggle against American trade interest. Many of the pirates were members of bankrupt or otherwise out-of-business tourist or shipping companies. They blamed America for their abject poverty: they had nothing, and the companies who cooperated with the United States (flying their flag even!) were considered fair game.

Verse 119 from the chapter called Childhood

"We survived how many regimes? Countless regimes from either side: we did it by sticking to our farms, Jesus, by keeping our heads up at the plough, by never letting go. That's how we survived. That's how the Old Republic lived on: in the hearts and minds of ploughmen. When you're in the hills, Jesus, men still use horses: machines would tip over. But those men are small farmers, Jesus - not big. Now what's happening? The climate's changed? All of a sudden, we can make it big on the world market? Sure, but let's not kill a way of life. Let's keep the good. You think these people around here want to be my friends? My neighbors? No: of course not! But: back in the day, we had business with each other: that's what makes for a community. And now what? There's no business: who could give a rat's ass what you do or who you are?

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

"Number two, step forward." The voice came from beyond the lights - "step back, please" - an ominous voice being filtered by loudspeakers. Then, they fell silent. They were standing there in silence for a long time. Nike wasn't sure what was happening. He was growing uncomfortable. "Number five, step forward, please." Nike was wondering what the procedure was. "Thank you. Step back." He wondered who was beyond those lights. "Number four, step forward, please." Number four stepped forward. He wondered who was looking at him: who could see him from beyond those lights? "Step back, please." He wondered whether she could see him. "Step back, please - thank you."

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 7, Surprising Oneself, Paragraph 3

ANDY: About stuff, you know; she was reminiscing mostly. I asked her to remind me about some things that happened years ago - some stuff between her and me and Indiana. But she wrote it before all this junk started happening, so, by the time it came in the mail a few days ago, things were different, you know. Things were already way different.

NIKE: Yeah, I understand.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 8, Affording Private Health Care, Paragraphs 77-78

Some scenes - perhaps, even all of them - were repeated. I don't remember such a thing happening before. If it's true, it's another ghastly development. I can't be sure because repeated scenes were identical to the first ones: I can only remember them once. But I have a distinct impression that I replayed certain parts of the dream, as if I were dwelling on them. Perhaps my unconscious mind was trying to change things, but, of course, I had no control. They would always play out the same way, and I would simply have to suffer them all over again.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 4, The Fourth Day, Part 1, Our Constitution & Constitutional Reform, Section 1, Losing Oneself, Paragraph 3

ANDY: No, I haven't seen them. But then again, I haven't really seen anybody - not since, you know, everything was happening.

NIKE: What was it like?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 8, Affording Private Health Care, Paragraphs 8-9

Oh, but who am I kidding? It's obvious that there are still so many feelings left - contradictory and unpredictable. And I'm supposed to be telling you what happened at Nike's party. That is the reason for my writing this letter. And I am aware, as my shuddering body reminds me, that in order for you to understand what happened, I must relate to you what has been happening, or rather what has not been happening between myself and Macy, a relationship which must seem entirely innocent to you, as I have ever so rarely discussed it. And I do apologize profusely for that, but there was never a moment when I was not so entirely confused that I could possibly broach the subject with any hope of clarity. Ah, but I'm already making excuses.

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: I lost my virginity to a married woman. Her husband was abroad - had been for several months. She did plan on joining him, but she loved sex - she admitted it - more than she loved her husband. Then again, I didn't really know the man. Maybe he was the same way. Maybe he was a scoundrel. Some women are just crazy. I was doing work on her balcony at the time. She would undress in front of me through the window. She even let me watch her masturbate. I was around eighteen years old. She was forty. I had no idea what to do. I couldn't do anything, anyway. I was surrounded by my crewmates. When we finished, we packed up and we left. I didn't see her for several weeks. In due course, we bumped into each other at one of the local pubs. She asked me how I was doing. I told her I was fine. I bought her a few drinks. She asked me to take her home. I did. On her front porch, as she was removing her keys from her pocket, she dropped something.

ALICE: A condom.

FLETCHER: How did you know?

ALICE: I guessed.

FLETCHER: Is that something you've done?

ALICE: I've never done it. I assume, if you want to get your point across, that's the most powerful way.

FLETCHER: It's true. I couldn't help myself. I had to go up to her room.

ALICE: Did you like it?

FLETCHER: I loved it - as it was happening. When we were finished, I felt as dirty as a pig. She wanted me to come every Wednesday afternoon like clockwork.

ALICE: Did you?

Usage of Happening in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

One day Orbitz finally emerged from his hotel room. He was carrying what looked like a book. He went into the shop. "It's you again," said the shopkeeper. "What do you want?" Orbitz said nothing. He dropped the book on the counter and left. One half of the surveillance team followed him all the way to the space port. The other half decided to find out what was going on. They raided the shop. They found nothing. The book Orbitz had been carrying was an antique. It was stamped with the name of the hotel. When one of the agents went to the hotel to ask about it the clerk behind the desk wanted it back. He said every room was supposed to have one. It was tradition. He had no idea why. He said the owner would get mad if one of them disappeared. The owner was questioned about the book. He said the same thing. It was tradition. Every room had a book. Every book was the same. He didn't know why. He didn't care to know. The Amazon cared. According to his sources there was a chance the book had a connection to the Wiki-en Society. He ordered the hotel closed. He arrested the owner and the entire staff. They proved themselves innocent quickly. The Astrazeneca found no deception in them. The shopkeeper was different. He was held long after the others had been released. He wasn't lying about Orbitz. He had never seen the man before in his life. He was lying about the way he did business. He claimed he was an honest businessman. It was a lie. He claimed he knew a good bargain when he saw one. Another lie. The Amazon wondered what was happening. Orbitz had gone from the space port to a low orbit cruise ship. Aboard the same ship was Sara Lee. The scientist who had confounded the Astrazeneca in the first place. He assigned a surveillance team to watch her. She walked around and gazed at the blue planet. She didn't see Orbitz at all.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written with Stanislaw Lem in mind, if you know who that is

Orbitz pulled up the hood of his skin-suit. Destiny lay aboard the Nautilus. Orbitz sputtered his way towards the stern of the ship. By the time he got to the airlock he could see the flashing red lights of an intruder alert. Marriott had done her job. Orbitz boarded the ship. He looked at the clock. There wasn't much time left before his bomb would explode. He headed carefully towards the gallery. He wasn't sure how this was going to happen. When he got to the hatch he saw Heather Mills. All eight of her legs were stretching to their limit. She was craning her head over the edge of the window, straining to see the Argo. She lifted herself a little higher with the hand bar. She dropped her doll. It didn't matter. She was fascinated by the ship's slow spinning descent. It was already transitting the planet. "That's why she doesn't see me," thought Orbitz. "She's distracted by the view. She knows there's an intruder but she's acting like nothing's wrong." Orbitz wondered for a moment if he had told himself too much. If Heather Mills might know what was happening. He tried to remember what he had told himself so many years ago. He smiled. He had mentioned the sauna. He had tried in vain to change his past. He had said go to the sauna. It was the one piece of the ship that went back in time. Heather Mills had read his mind on the bridge. That's why she was here. She had come to be next to the sauna. It was on the other side of the hall. Like a child she had been distracted. Orbitz realized his entire destiny pivoted on the childishness of this pathetic little girl. It made him give the lightest of chortles. Heather Mills jerked her head. She saw Orbitz's reflection in the dark part of the glass. Before she could turn around he had shut the hatch. He locked it. He turned and walked into the sauna.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
