Information, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is poring over the potency of strengthening his epic Fiction Corpus with a morality play about reading stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't reject the concept of exercising English as a global standard. I don't accept the lumbering ground plan by which English is taught.Pointer

Strengthening a person's dexterity with a language isn't like producing a more valuable coin. A language is not merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to employ with a greater amount of precision. A shared language can not be bisected from the competing values of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching students to recite English is to strip them of its cultural context. A capable instructor must prepare a plan for introducing it; the perceptive pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define words based on a particular corpus, a set of writing of various scope and consistency. A corpus may include anything from a book about literature to many truly brilliant literature stories. I lost many a sleepless night creating my "considerable" Fiction Corpus to form a new genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have devised a million words and I have catalogued them, reformulating them - not simply to teach English vocabulary but to reveal the human soul, and to goad that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Help End Ad Hominem Attacks With ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

On Monday, I arrived in Europe. By Wednesday I had bought a car. By Friday I had met the woman who a few months later would end up having travelling 6,000 miles across Europe with me.

As an artist, from the beginning of my adult career, my work had been devoted to the problem of body acceptance, a goal that I would later learn was shared by a whole community of people called naturists, a humble portion of which I discovered residing in Poland, a country whose cultural conservatism does not lend itself readily to forward thinking. One of those forward-thinking Polish naturists happened to be Margo.

Being from America, all I had to do in Europe was turn on the radio to hear an American song. All I had to do was walk into a movie theater to see an American movie. To be understood all I had to do was speak English. Being from Poland, she couldn't stand listening to the radio for all the political nonsense being bandied about. She didn't like watching American movies because she claimed they all ended the same way. She didn't want to speak English with me because she not only wanted to say things correctly but she wanted to say them her way and nobody had ever succeeded in teaching her how. I desperately wanted to understand. She wanted to be understood.

Do unto others as you would have done unto you. But how to judge what we would want done to us if we've never been in somebody else's shoes? If we've never been abandoned by our mother, how do we treat somebody who has? Somebody who seems to constantly suffer the repurcussions of it? Margo and I had 46 days and 6,000 miles to try on each other's shoes. We had one car and one tent in which to hear each other's words. We learned to cooperate. We started learning how to listen.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Information

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word information in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word information, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word information is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Definition of InformationMargo on a trampoline

The word information refers to the idea of changing somebody's internal mental structure, namely, the result of putting ideas into somebody's head, regardless of whether they're good or bad. It also refers to a kind of artifact related to this process.

Usage of Information in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"The newspapers," said the host, "not the tabloids: the newspapers were full of information from front page to back - for a few days. Then they went back to reporting on terrorism. Who knows? Maybe there's nothing else to say about the poor girl. Maybe she's boring."

Verse 353 from the chapter called Bohemia

With fire also came a new and unprecedented form of torture. Sticks could pierce and rocks crush, but fire burned. This hurt. No longer did man need to restrain his victims for fear of doing them irreversible damage; he simply needed to catch up and shine that beautiful burning torch in their eyes and poke them once or twice - as often as necessary. With fire, the weak could extort from the strong; the one could extort from the many. The threat of fire was great: unlike sticks and stones, the flame spread and hungered. It was necessary to protect it, to hide it from one's enemies - whoever one's enemies were. Information was key. Who had fire and who didn't? Whose fire was still burning and whose had gone out? When was the last boom-flash and when would there be another one? These were very important questions.

Verse 4 from the chapter called Security

By that point, there was very little information to be had. Nevertheless, as the second man at the crime scene, after the landlord, your father was seriously tempted to steal evidence. He decided against it. Stalin had complete access to the CBS crime lab, the CBS being Poland's central investigative bureau, and Jesus didn't have any friends there on the inside nor did he want to have to bribe anyone. Lab results were available to anyone in law enforcement anyway, so Jesus took some photographs and left before the cops came. Later on, Stalin went to the CBS lab and got the results. The forensic evidence indicated without a doubt that the bullets came from a Russian-made weapon, which didn't necessary mean that the perpetrator or perpetrators were Russian, but, then again, who else would be using a Russian-made weapon?

Usage of Information in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I remember him standing in front of that canvas forever, trying to count the number of games, until I left out of frustration and came back with an information card. He looked amused with himself, and claimed he had counted sixty without doubling; I told him it was eighty-four, and had to convince him not to look for the rest. Even as we stood in front of Mantegna's St. Sebastian, he mentioned how funny it was that Bruegel would show grown men playing a children's game like leapfrog. He said adults shouldn't act like children, but that they should think like them.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 4, Meeting a Man in Austria, Paragraph 7, Clauses 7-12

It is all I can do to contain it. Sometimes it is so powerful it begins to affect my outer members; they can sense the gravity of the feeling, and like the tides by the moon, they are pushed and pulled by the force of its presence. I can sense how they are affected. And then I must fight back the feeling and squeeze it down with great difficulty. I am afraid of its power. I am afraid of its meaning. I know what it signifies: it is a reflection of my own corporality. It is my own organism calling to itself, perhaps even calling to other organisms. And my conscious mind can only interpret so much, leaving my soul without the best of information.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 5, Inflammation of the Loins, Paragraph 1, Clauses 7-16

My heart is ready to shatter: it has never been one for acrobatics and all this constant tumbling is making me sick. Can you not write something for me? something that will quiet my rumbling heart? It yearns to hear your true voice, and it cannot sustain itself on a few telephone calls. My heart will not respond to the tones of a magnetic diaphragm, even though my ear be fooled, and my mind be well aware that you, however indirectly, are in complete control of its vibrations. I hate telephones: they are diabolical; they steal one's voice and I will give them no more credit than they deserve. They are good for sharing nothing but the most basic information. So unless you have to tell me when to pick you up from the airport, you should think twice before bothering to call me.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 8, Loneliness, Paragraph 4

ANDY: Oh, it was just a shock - for me, at least. But Indiana seemed to be on top of things - at least for a while, you know, when it was still just a matter of getting information down. But now that everything's kind of settling, I don't know what it's like, you know - I just couldn't hang around that hospital.

NIKE: His friend is dying.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 8, Affording Private Health Care, Paragraphs 10-11

I wish you had taken this guidebook with you; it's full of fascinating information. I don't suppose you've heard the aphorism: it's easier for a grand coach to pass through the Arch of Marble, than it is for a poor man to get into Annabel's nightclub. Of course you haven't: I just made it up; according to the guidebook, you would have to pay five hundred pounds a year to get on the members list at Annabel's. But don't bother: I'm sure it's the most artificially hip club in London. I believe they play mostly eighties music; you'd have to be willing to dance with Margaret Thatcher if you want to go there. However, it's one of Jeffrey Archer's favorite places; maybe if you stand outside the door you'll get to meet him. Alright: I don't want to make you vomit: I'll stop teasing you.

MS. JACKSON: Tell me more about Egypt. You were saying something about locusts.

LESBIAN: When I arrived in November the country was under attack. Locusts were everywhere: in the north, in the south, in the east, in the west. Farmers who couldn't afford pesticides were burning tires to survive. It just so happened I arrived in Cairo at the exact moment that the swarm was passing through on its way to the Red Sea.

MS. JACKSON: Where did they come from?

LESBIAN: West Africa. They crossed the Sahara to get there. They were very hungry. They would fall onto your plate and get stuck in your glass. By the time I got to Aswan, the regional governor offered a two hundred Egyptian pound reward for any information leading to the destruction of a swarm.

MS. JACKSON: Did you find one?

LESBIAN: No.

MS. JACKSON: Does that sort of thing happen often? A swarm of locusts sounds so biblical.

LESBIAN: The very next year I took a trip to Hawai'i. They were suffering from a gall wasp invasion.

MS. JACKSON: What's a gall wasp?

It wasn't what he did; it was what he said. He had everybody on Norfolk thinking you had hired the best piece of faffy this side of Hawai'i. Any investigation into Captain Orbitz's activites and allegiances would have to be handled delicately. To most of the people privy to the situation it seemed a foregone conclusion that the Wiki-ens were engaged in disinformation. They were trying to discredit Captain Orbitz in the eyes of the military while simultaneously drawing on his fame to promote their own cause. There was only one question. How did they get the DNA? The Admiral in charge of the courier service was tasked with the odius mission of trying to find a leak in his own department. It went nowhere. The higher-ups assigned a Amazon to the case. Philyrans are notorious for their pig-headedness. He insisted on interrogating Orbitz.

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
