Shooting, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is poring over the notion of beefing up his sizable Fiction Corpus with some real sci fi; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I believe in the idea of enacting English as everyone's second language. I don't accept the uninspiring design by which English is taught.Pointer

Fortifying one's deftness for a language isn't like introducing a more comfortable horse collar. A language - a common tongue - isn't just a tool that you can learn to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A shared language can not be divided from the philosophical currents of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to deprive her of its cultural context. A good teacher must develop a strategy for introducing it; the smartest student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a set of writing of various scope and consistency. They can include everything from a book about literature to some really good stories. I burned many candles forging my "gallant" Fiction Corpus to form a distinct class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have constructed a million words and I have deconstructed them, reframing them - not simply to teach the English language but to promote the human soul, and to pressure that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Shooting

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word shooting in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word shooting, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word shooting is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Shooting in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

We stopped bothering him. Sapper circled back to the birch grove. I lingered. Most of the hunters were a hundred and fifty meters away near the edge of the forest. Some of them climbed into a white electric truck and drove back down the way we came. The rest disappeared. I could hear their dogs barking in the distance. By the time I ambled my way to the forest's edge, I saw them two hundred meters away, walking around someone's cornfield. I wondered if they had shooting rights. There were fifteen men with barking dogs walking down one way, while another group spread itself down the other direction. Each man began covering about thirteen meters worth of cornfield. They were going to flush it out, whatever it happened to be. Wild boar, I guessed.

"What's going on?" asked Sapper from behind.

Verses 53-54 from the chapter called Bohemia

Those were the days when I first began hearing my voices. FUCK GOD! they said. FUCK JESUS CHRIST, BULLSHIT SON OF GOD! They said terrible things like that. FUCK JESUS CHRIST! they said. FUCK JESUS! JESUS! JESUS! JESUS! JESUS! JESUS! JESUS! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! I heard them in church during Mass. I HATE GOD! No, I don't! I HATE GOD! No, I don't hate God! HATE GOD! HATE GOD! HATE GOD! HATE GOD! No: fuck it! FUCK IT! FUCK IT! FUCK IT! FUCK IT! FUCK IT! FUCK IT! FUCK IT! HATE GOD! HATE GOD! HATE GOD! HATE GOD! Stop it! HATE GOD! HATE GOD! Fuck it, stop! JESUS CHRIST BULLSHIT! SON OF GOD BULLSHIT! FUCK IT JESUS CHRIST BULLSHIT! GOD MOTHERFUCKING BULLSHIT! I would crush the words and throw them out. I would tear them apart and stuff them inside a cannon. I would hold them there inside that cannon for as long as possible, but they were strong. They would push themselves out. Before they did, I would have to run to the other side and light the cannon, shooting those despicable voices out of my head - BOOM! - usually they would land about ten feet away. Then they'd crawl back. They were demons. FUCK GOD! they said. FUCK JESUS CHRIST! FUCK JESUS CHRIST! FUCK JESUS CHRIST! FUCK JESUS CHRIST! FUCK JESUS CHRIST! Stop it motherfucker! FUCK JESUS! FUCK JESUS! FUCK JESUS! FUCK JESUS! FUCK JESUS! Stop it! I HATE JESUS! No, I don't hate Buddha - CHRIST! I HATE JESUS CHRIST! I HATE JESUS CHRIST! I HATE JESUS CHRIST! I HATE JESUS CHRIST! They were never-ending: these fucked-up voices. I would hit my own head against the wall, but nothing happened. Sometimes, they would last for hours - I drove my head against pillows; I shook my head; I would hit my own head, but nothing helped. My mind kept cursing God - no: it wasn't my mind; I knew my mind: these were voices. They were saying these things inside, but they were coming from outside. They were saying these terrible things. I wasn't saying them. I wasn't thinking them. I was hearing them. I knew that. I was positive. I was convinced: the devil was whispering in my ear.

Verse 237 from the chapter called Childhood

Oh Bartolomeo! Maestro da canne! For whom the Republic of Venice gave thanks! You gave hope to the weak and weary! More strength to the strong! A lifeline for Freedom! A slicker noose for the wrong! You gave both cold and hot, forward and back; a wife to the tyrant, and life to the revolutionary son; fear to the many, and rule to the one. You were indifferent. As long as people paid, you made guns. If not for you, what would've happened? Somebody else would've taken your smoky rank in the annals of industry: grandfather of arms! You gave your descendents an unparalleled legacy: your long and hard barrels, shooting with unflinching consistency, ensured over the centuries that your plant would not be torn from your family's hands. Berettas live on! They still make their weapons! They sell them! So don't be surprised that Jesus tried the same.

Verse 15 from the chapter called Arms

"The fucking military is collaborating - do you understand that? They're ready to shell the city - their own fucking city! Can you believe that? Instead of having the balls to go from house to house looking for those faggots, they're gonna drop shells! What the fuck is that? That's why they're trying to evacuate the Old Town. They're sayin', 'Leave your homes: go north.' They think if they evacuate Center City and Old Town by having all those people filter through the northern checkpoints, all they're gonna have left is terrorists. That's bullshit. Unless they say they're gonna shell it, not everyone's gonna leave. Not the old people, anyway: they're gonna sit at home until the radio says they're gonna drop shells - even then they're not gonna move. Anyway, who the fuck's gonna say that? That would be idiotic. That would be like saying, 'Hey, terrorists: wake up for the invasion' - so they can slip away? What the fuck is that? The only terrorist you can recognize is the one that's shooting at you. Otherwise, who the fuck is it? Nobody - it's somebody without papers - I don't know - somebody walkin' off with loot. All they gotta do is drop their weapons and voila: they melt away. It's fuckin' bullshit. It's not fuckin' fair is what it is - but that's life. That's business. Like you, you motherfuckin' pip-squeak: what the fuck is your problem, man? You have got balls to screw me up."

The car in front of us stopped.

Verses 121-122 from the chapter called Arms

Jesus's legitimacy might've immediately improved if he had told everyone how the resistance was being run: by using smuggled weapons destined for a Martian: with money robbed from a bank the night before the Polish army 'accidentally' blew it up. That would've been like shooting oneself in the foot to prove one's bravery. Jesus had to swear each and every Confederate to secrecy. No one could disclose the neighborhood, much less the exact location, from which the Confederacy had been armed. No one could mention duffel bags. The only person Jesus worried about was their Lieutenant, the only non-terrorist prisoner he ever held. When Jesus decided to hand over the body of the Martian, as a sign of good faith, to an independent international investigative commission, he decided to release the Lieutenant as well. By then, his mention of a bank robbery only served to confuse. No one had proof that the bank had ever been robbed. There had been a breakdown in communications: a clerical error: the azimuth had been mistranscribed. The army had been duly criticized - no one liked mentioning the bank, especially after a certain commissioner leaked out anonymously the information that similarly mistranscribed azimuths had appeared simultaneously in seemingly isolated locations. That really helped Jesus's cause.

Usage of Shooting in Sex for Children

Like streams of consciousness converging, former thoughts and current questions began flooding my mind. My heart was in danger. I took a deep breath and I held it in my chest, as if to reinforce the floodgates cradling my heart. I had to protect her from being overwhelmed by my sick and moiling stomach, or the storm clouds of my mind. I began a deep and steady breathing, calmly pumping away the feeling with my diaphragm, blowing out my nose, trying to dissipate my thoughts. But my thoughts - even without the weight of feeling welling up against me, pressuring my soul, churning my stomach - these thoughts were not dissolvable. They would not go away, and how could I let them infuse my heart? that fountain of dangerous feeling? that chemical dynamo that would send them shooting to my throat - give them voice! - no! that would send them bursting through my mouth in sentences of self-destructing rancor - an explosive solution, one which I would not allow to break my stony face.

He wanted to unlace her brown bodice and reach inside. "Boy or girl?" he asked.
