Team, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is kicking around the concept of boosting his elephantine Fiction Corpus with some truly brilliant fiction stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the viability of employing English as a worldwide language. I don't think highly of the unsensational route by which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Improving a person's skills with a language isn't like promoting a more accurate compass. A language - a living tongue - isn't just a tool that you can learn to manipulate with a greater amount of precision. A shared language cannot be dissociated from the prevailing culture of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a person to recite English is to cheat her out of its cultural context. An informed instructor must develop a plan for introducing it; the perceptive pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe words based on a particular corpus, a body of written language of various size and consistency. They might contain anything from a biography of the world's top fiction authors to an entire set of really inspirational stories. I watched many moons pass forging my "enormous" Fiction Corpus to form a special class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have framed a million words and I have evaluated them, reshaping them - not simply to teach English vocabulary but to reveal the human spirit, and to provoke that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Team

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word team in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word team, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word team is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Team in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Protected by the MTA (the Martian Terrestrial Authority, which was created for the purpose), the nuclear bomb was successfully transported. In the meantime, in cooperation with Panzer-Tank Mining, Yariba Corporation dug a deep tunnel into the base of Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system. It's twenty-seven kilometers high! Five hundred and forty kilometers wide! I'm sure you've noticed it. They put the nuclear bomb inside the tunnel and off it went, clearing the most enormous cavern ever made. They drilled holes through the top. They drilled holes through the sides. They laid pipes. They brought water and boiled it. The steam went through the steam turbines, rose to the very top and fell back down again, going through the water turbines on the way back down to the boiler - a gigantic operation. A simple operation! A Martian child could appreciate its magnificent beauty, and, not having to wonder whence that blessed power comes, can look outside his northern window and see that brilliant topographical majesty that gives him light. Blessed Olympus! How young those Martians are when they first learn to fear her power! Give them light, Olympus! Not tyranny! Not shadow and pain! Give them light!

Verse 8 from the chapter called Childhood

Those were not laughing days, child. In those days, there was much hardship. Sixty-eight years before I was born, Yellowstone exploded. Five thousand cubic kilometers of boiling magma came to blanket the Earth, kill mankind, terrorize his animals, and fell his favorite trees. Earth bled, and the sky grew dark. It rained blackness. The whole planet stank like a struck match: burning brimstone, like the Bible says - in other words, black clouds of sulfur: they came to suffocate, incinerate. In faraway places, water turned to steam: it boiled. Volcanic ash came tumbling down. The wind blew steam and hot rock. Millions died; the rest wept black tears.

Verse 72 from the chapter called Childhood

That night, Jesus and Zoe almost made love. Getting into bed, Jesus kissed her on the mouth. Zoe went wild. Rolling around, they kissed, pushed, pulled, hugged and squeezed. Zoe removed Jesus's clothes. She saw the tattooed Christogram upon his chest. She was sitting astride Jesus's waist. Pulling up her shirt, Jesus brought her back to attention. She removed it: she removed her shirt! and her bra and pulled Jesus up against her chest. Squeezing tightly, Jesus smelled the beautiful strength upon her breasts and kissed them. He pushed her down to the side of the bed and she spread her legs. Jesus mounted her and he was ready to do it, but there was too much: too much whirling around in his head: too much at stake: his destiny, his word, Zeus on Mars, and this half-Martian, half-Japanese creature in his bed, waiting to be fucked! Something was wrong. Jesus wanted her. He wanted to love this woman but not now: not here: not like this. This would have to wait. Jesus was quickly losing steam. The thought that Zoe must have prepared for this - must be taking contraceptives (there was no way she was looking to conceive) - was the occasion that finally prompted Jesus to cease rubbing himself up and down your mother's wet and fully engorged vulva.

Verse 781 from the chapter called Security

I know the lure of success. I feel the pressures of domination. That farmer who sows rye in every field is not a victim. Nor is he some kind of scab. He is a player in a game with no teams, and he deserves no one's pity or awe or respect any more than the rest of us do. Your father always had to win. He would go and cry if he lost - every time. Once, your great-grandfather held a race for the boys and girls. Jesus was distracted for some reason; he missed the starting gun. His first reaction, unfortunately, was to complain. Realizing that the race had already started and wasn't going to be stopped, Jesus went for it. He went as fast as a young boy could, just so he wouldn't have to bear the shame of coming in dead last. He was beaten by a girl. She received first prize and Jesus received second. He was infuriated. Second prize was obviously inferior - too inferior. First prize was an electronic game system. Second prize was a fancy pencil sharpener. Jesus went and cried, not realizing that the prizes were personal: they were designated. Nor did he realize that the girl's family was rich, and his family was, in comparison, very poor.

Verse 150 from the chapter called Childhood

In those days, hooliganism ruled the streets. Boys from broken homes, with unemployed, alcoholic fathers, or single mothers with four other kids to feed, found solace in groups of young men who shaved their heads and pretended that football was life. They chanted songs that nobody else knew. They broke windows for fun. Their favorite motto was 'cock in your ass.' They didn't care much for anyone who wasn't on their local football team. They hated them when they lost. Then again, either victory or defeat was their excuse for massive amounts of drinking and violence. They didn't care much about football. They collected weapons. They dug holes in the ground and threw their weapons inside. They were like mangy dogs, marking their territory with paint. HOOL'S they wrote on the walls. And, if you were lucky, they just wanted to rob you: most of the time, they would hold you down and beat you senseless for no reason. They were unemployed. They were there to terrorize the neighborhood; they made it their job to hunt down Jews and kill faggots.

Usage of Team in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Strolling through the empty hall, I laughed at the mess of teasers on the floor and all around - various clubs advertising their many-storied attractions, bars with Wednesday drink specials, free coke with pizza. There was another kind of mess in Luke's apartment - the absolutely filthy kind. Modesty forbids me from describing it; I was compelled at the very least to throw the trash away and gather up the various personal effects.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 2, Letting It Steam, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1-3

How could I see through that distorting steam that which I have since admitted with clarity of hindsight? I feared him.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 2, Letting It Steam, Paragraph 4, Clauses 4-5

By the time I returned to that love seat, Nike was discussing something entirely different. I sat down, not paying attention, staring directly in front of me until I could no longer resist the temptation. Macy was being silent, and my head turned itself back to his. And there they were: set in a face of sharpness, transfixing their prey, poking through the heavy brows of a lowered face, a sorcerer's face; as he prepared his incantations, there they stood, ready at arms, two cauldrons of steaming black tar, two very cold celestial discs, two empty orbs that wanted possession of two separate worlds, two very wide walnut eyes waiting to crack, two pleading for mercy, two coaxing, too ready to resist.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 9, Attacking homosexuality, Paragraph 2, Clauses 1-4

None of this was done consciously - and yet, I admit: these things were born of conscious jealousy, executed in unconscious retribution - all under the spell of the most painful of conscious loves.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 2, Letting It Steam, Paragraph 5

It made me wonder what kind of people were giving Luke his reputation these days. They can't be that much different from the ones we knew: no self-respecting woman would ever shag in that apartment - but I guess that goes for men too. In fact, what self-respecting person would ever choose to have anything to do with Luke in the first place? He can't possibly be raping them - the walls are too thin - unless he uses drugs - ah, but let us not speak of that.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Tatum went to him. She apologized for her outburst at the bathhouse. Channing waved it off. He offered Tatum a seat. She asked why he wasn't with the team. Neal chuckled. He gestured towards the lights.

"This," he said, "is not common. One of the power stations failed a few hours ago-in time for nightfall."

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring a pair of unlikely partners

"There's a Monkey Ball team based near the north pole-perhaps you've heard of them: the Sams Town Blackguards. They're owned by a Manga person named Zyplukk. He's not high on our list of priorities. I want you to hang around the team. Take pictures. Send them wirelessly back to us."

"That's it?" Read sneered. "How much?"

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story about what it means to exclude people

"What would they pay us with?" asked one of the women.

"Rice. Why should I waste my time rotting my ankles? I could be here, rotting my entire body."

Tae poked his head over the edge of a rock. A few meters below, Kung lay naked, neck-deep in a pool of steaming water. Bei swam next to him. Fu sat on the edge, soaking her feet.

Kung suggested they cool off on the grass. Bei agreed. They climbed out.

"I'll be here," said Fu.

– from “How Tae & Bo Took Over the World and Kung & Fu Didn't,” an apocryphal bible story featuring a settlement composed solely of criminals

Within the hour, a team of investigators was crowding the apartment. A generator fueled a pair of floodlamps. Harris took Tatum's statement in the corridor. He kept holding back a smile.

"I'm not sure you're being entirely forthright, Ms. Read."

"I told you. Somebody ransacked my room. I didn't feel safe."

The man cast a sidelong glance at the corpse. Without turning his head, he shifted his eyes slowly back to Tatum.

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring a frank discussion of human sympathy

Partisan fans concentrated around their team's crater. The creativity of their coordinated taunts was mildly amusing. Tatum considered the metaphoric potential. Two rival villages coming together, through an elaborate dance involving large stones, they would settle their long-standing dispute: who is the better village?

GREY GOOSE: You, a farmer? Gardening maybe - but farming? Your hands are too sensitive. They were made for handling stems and bulbs.

KOKOMO: Can I help you?

GREY GOOSE: Excuse me. I was at the post office and I found a letter for your husband marked 'urgent.'

ALICE: For Luke?

GREY GOOSE: From his team's manager.

Usage of Team in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

The Amazon was called. He decided Orbitz's exchange with the shopkeeper was a kind of code. He ordered that they both be watched. It wasn't hard to do. Orbitz didn't move from his hotel room. The shopkeeper stayed in his shop. Customers came hawking antique ray guns. There were bidets customized for extinct species. A collection of hand-painted mechanical snakes was ruefully turned down. After a few days the members of the surveillance team noticed something strange. The shopkeeper never bargained. If he made an offer to buy something it was invariably albeit grudgingly accepted. The rest of the junk he dismissed even if he liked it. "What a shame," he would say. "I wish I could afford it." In the same hour he would sell something for ten times its cost. He was making piles of money.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance based on my affection for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

Sir Lewis wasn't surprised by the scores. He rocked the individual competition. If not for his brain-dead team he could've won. One other math genius in his high school was all he needed. Instead he was matched with doofuses.

– from “The Skirt on the Proctor,” a kid story about getting together in an unforgiving world

The surveillance team was lucky they weren't airlocked into oblivion. They caught up with the transport. They rocketed past its puny sails. When the passengers disembarked at one of Earth's orbiting elevators Orbitz was among them. The men breathed a sigh of relief. They decided to cling to their subject like spoiled lettuce. If Orbitz was aware of them he didn't show it. He went straight to a curiosity shop outside of Lubbock, Texas. The men waited in the street in a nondescript white autovan. They plugged in their earpieces. They heard the jingling of a bell. Footsteps.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my respect for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

The Amazon called his team. One half was still following Orbitz on the cruise ship. The other half was in front of the shop. He ordered them into the neon building. They walked up to the second floor. The team leader paused. He could hear something in the room ahead. It sounded like a man rapping his fingers on a desk. He pushed open the door. There was no desk. There was no man. There was clutter everywhere. Strange objects of art and furniture stacked on top of each other loomed from every corner. The rapping continued. It was slower now. It was more cautious. The men squeezed into the room. All of them were transfixed by the sound. It was coming from behind a low curtain. The curtain was draped over what seemed like a crate. Or a cage. The men crowded in front of it. The leader reached out his hand. He grabbed a corner of the curtain. He lifted it.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written out of respect for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

The next year was the same thing. Sir Lewis was still in high school. Still the only member of the math club. Still put on the same community college team for the Olympiad. The Asian girl was back. It was infuriating. Even the proctor was wearing the same tight skirt.

Sir Lewis sucked it up. This would be his last year of humiliation. He was already accepted into his first choice for college. He had the scholarship. Pretty soon he was going to be a star.

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
