Trucks, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is meditating on the feasibility of beefing up his vast Fiction Corpus with a bunch of fantasy fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the practicality of promulgating English as a global standard. I don't believe in the sterile game plan by which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Fine-tuning one's handiness with a language isn't like bringing about a stronger steel. A language - a living language - is not just an instrument that you can teach yourself to employ with greater amounts of precision. A common language cannot be uncoupled from the philosophical currents of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching people to recite English is to rob them of its cultural context. A good instructor has to develop a plan for introducing it; the bravest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe words on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of written language of varying size and consistency. A corpus can contain everything from a book about literature to some really short stories online. I suffered many a sleepless night laboring on my "whopping" Fiction Corpus to form a special class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have pieced together a million words and I have enumerated them, reshaping them - not merely to teach an American language but to defend the human spirit, and to prod that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Trucks

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word trucks in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word trucks, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word trucks is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Trucks in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

The Krupnik turned to the tiller and started the engine. Without another word, we began floating down the cobblestone road. The drive was aggravatingly slow; Jesus felt silly. The Krupnik, on the other hand, was surprisingly calm. Perhaps he was used to driving electric trucks, or perhaps he was already reconciled with the fact that Jesus was going to have to be paid.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

"It's not far to the road," said Shephard. "If one of us collapses, the other might be able to get help." He crawled through the back door. Clark followed. Shephard climbed the dune. Clark climbed after him. Shephard reached the top. He saw the highway to the east. He went south. Clark was confused. He reached the top. He saw trucks driving on the highway.

"I hate to ask this again," he said. "Why aren't we being driven? Couldn't somebody just pick us up?"

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring a man who never really grew up

Clark shook his head. "Even if we could somehow bribe somebody at the fields, the executives would get involved. It's not worth the risk."

"They wouldn't even know what's missing."

"How is that possible?"

"We'd be skimming it off the top."

"Of what?"

"Of the trucks."

"When?"

Usage of Trucks in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

A retired mathematician lived on Profile directly across from the hill. He specialized in probability theory. One day while sipping a cup of tea in his kitchen he realized that two mail trucks coming down the hill on two separate roads that met at the bottom and had to stop to service boxes at the exact same spot could potentially be rolling down the hill at the same time and if one carrier wasn't careful enough could be observed engaging in a significant but nevertheless comical collision. The professor happened to be, as Mark knew from his mail, an amateur photographer. He set about recording the times at which he observed the carriers proceeding up the hill and the times at which he observed them coming down. He noticed that if both regular carriers were on duty a collision would never occur. Both of them were too slow. But if one particularly fast substitute carrier, namely Mark, was coupled with the other regular carrier, namely Bill, he could calculate the probability of a collision based on the times at which he saw them climbing up the hill. This excited the professor immensely.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story about things we don't like to think about that unfortunately exist in real life

As Mark made his way down to his final stop he noticed the professor standing behind the tripod leaning into the viewfinder. He was so preoccupied with the sight of the bent-over old man he neglected to slow down and crane his head around the hedgerow. Luckily there was nobody there. The cord that connected Bill's hand brake to the actual brake had snapped. He had been dragging it for about the entire route until a customer on Download Street finally stopped him and asked, "What's that noise?" Bill decided it was time to take a break and check it out. He didn't want customers thinking postmen didn't care about their trucks. The customer saw the broken cord. He offered to bring some twine so Bill could tie the loose end to the chassis. Bill said he didn't want to be a bother. The customer insisted. Bill was forced to wait ten minutes until the customer came back and said, "Sorry it took so long. Here's the twine." Bill tied the cord to the chassis and went on his way. Never realizing the broken hand brake had probably saved his life.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story that describes life on this planet, though hopefully we can change
