Cars, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's thinking over the prospect of enlarging his stupendous Fiction Corpus with some very short stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the potency of upholding English as a worldwide standard. I don't believe in the regular steps through which English is presented for study.Pointer

Reenforcing a person's skill with a language isn't like creating a tougher piece of bronze. A language isn't merely a tool that you can teach yourself to employ with greater amounts of precision. A common language can't be sequestered from the philosophical currents of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a man recite English is to strip him of its cultural context. A capable teacher has to develop a plan for introducing it; the insightful pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of writing of various size and consistency. They can contain everything from a book about literature to some real speculative fiction. I suffered many a sleepless night creating my "staggering" Fiction Corpus in order to form a precise class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drafted a million words and I have categorized them, reshaping them - not just to teach the English language but to be an advocate for the human spirit, and to encourage that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Europe, the summer of 2011. Twelve countries. 46 days. One car. One tent. One man. One woman he's just met.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

As an American, I was full of optimism and confidence bordering on recklessness. I was ready to run the wheels off the car I had just bought and eventually I would. As a European, she was cautious and mistrustful. She needed to make sure the air conditioner worked. Which it did. If you knew how to turn the broken knob in just the right way.

There were times during our trip when I thought there might not be a happy ending. There were times when disaster was close and I wondered whether I hadn't made a mistake. I wondered whether fear, anger or sadness might triumph and one of us would have to finished the journey alone. Though I dangled from the cliffs of Normady I was saved. Though the lights went out I rode on. Though I ran the tires down to the wire I was okay. We drove home in one piece. We came home happy. We had started the process of learning how to listen and the sound of it was beautiful. We could be sure that we were ready to conquer the devils that abuse us no matter how long it would take.

a collection of modern art prints and posters

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Cars

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word cars in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word cars, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word cars is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Cars in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

When we got to an underground garage, Jesus said, "What's going on?"

"We have to switch cars."

Verses 69-70 from the chapter called Arms

"We have to switch cars because this car takes the weapons up north."

"Why north?"

Verses 86-87 from the chapter called Arms

Those days are over. What man keeps his own cow nowadays? Who's going to milk her? Sell her to the dairy farm; let the machines do it. Who's going to sell their own milk and cheese and butter? So many health regulations apply, only the biggest farmer can do it. The Sanitation Department would crush you. That's what they're there for: to protect the public health: to put small farming out of business. Sell your farms! Move to the city! Sleep with rats in your bed instead of your barn. "Don't you realize?" they say. "You can't live off your own land if you're not an agribusinessman! You need to go and be a clerk! File papers! Deal with people! Serve! Don't grow! (Please: we'll give you money not to grow.) Go to the city! Get a job! Manage a firm! Sell cars, rocks - I don't know. We need more cosmetics! More clothes! My shirt is dirty - make me a new one: something flashy, something new. Don't you understand? We don't have enough knick-knacks: go and make some. See if you can sell them! Good luck! We'll see you at the opera! What? You can't make it? What a shame! It's the best! It's culture! That's what we're here for: to make things and watch opera."

Verse 144 from the chapter called Childhood

It was all very understandable: it was beneficial, of course. A way of life was lost, but what was gained? Cars! Computers! Television! Fiberglass powerboats! Common ground was lost, but we had mass transit! Mass production! Electrical lights! Tall office buildings! Aspirin!

Verse 147 from the chapter called Childhood

That's what she feared the most - that's what she desired: to disappear. Not knowing what it meant, she feared it; knowing that what she had was unacceptable, she desired it: disappearance from the world: her scariest, most appealing thought. To call it suicidal was, perhaps, too strong - or, what I really mean is: too dangerous - but, nevertheless, that's what popped into my head every now and again, especially when she shared her feelings - even though I never actually noticed the scars that would necessarily have appeared if she indeed had been cutting herself, which is what she always claimed. Perhaps I decided unconsciously never to look. If so, it was not an act of faith on my part - more like cowardice and shame.

Verse 436 from the chapter called Bohemia

Usage of Cars in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

When we reached the avenue, we waited for a gap in the cars and then we ran as fast as we could across the road hand in hand.

We walked down the avenue hand in hand until we reached the station. We didn't let go until the turnstile tore us apart.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 10, Polyandry, Paragraphs 25-26

Because of her schedule, Christie likes to wake up bright and early in the afternoon. But, because I was her guest, the first morning of my stay I woke up to the smell of burning eggs. Christie had woken up early in the morning and had tried to make me breakfast, but had fallen asleep at the kitchen table. I quietly disposed of the smoldering remains before I woke her up and told her to go back to bed, which she promptly did: after we arranged to meet at Trafalgar Square in the afternoon. So I went down to Westminster by myself to visit the prominent buildings, and then made my way up Whitehall at the appropriate hour. Spying from across the street, looking past the rotating mob of cars, I spotted two familiar figures at the base of Nelson's Column; they were standing on top of the pedestal.

NIKE: You're not gonna be in a fucking raid. Are you a dummy? The cops only raid parked cars. Now go park over there and don't steal my car.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 22, Encountering Poverty, Paragraph 220

"April. It was strange. The weather was nice. I was surprised there weren't more girls."

"Maybe they were working."

"In the bushes? I doubt it. None of the cars were stopped. It was a steady stream of traffic. People cruising, waiting for the man-whores."

LUKA: Maybe they were tourists.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 20, Encountering the Sex Trade, Paragraphs 9-12

She was running on the balls of her feet, bouncing away from that mysterious motorcar, afraid of all danger, including strange men in strange cars. Little did she know there were also men in strange bushes. She ran right into Nike's arms. She crashed into him. There was no time to be afraid. I was there. I could feel the sudden gust of her breath. It knocked me. Nike held her tight.

"Are you alright?" The woman stared. She needed time to overcome the shock. It didn't take long. Unfortunately for Nike, he no longer had any excuse. He had to let her go.

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

"I'm not sure I know the answer to that," said Orbitz Número Dos.

"What do you mean?"

"He means you should be asking me." It was a third Orbitz. He stepped through the hatch.

"Right on time," said Orbitz Número Dos. Orbitz Number One stared at the image of himself as an old man. His body looked tired and tested. His face had more scars on it than the other one.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my love for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

A few months later the professor was again observing Bill and Mark going up the hill. He noted the difference in time. He calmly consulted his formula. He calculated a 95% chance of collision. There had never been such a high probability. The professor rushed out of the house. Again he almost tripped and fell on the tripod. He set himself up on the side of the road. He made sure the lighting was adequate. He programmed the continuous drive. He heard the sound of two engines coming down the hill. He couldn't stop smiling. He was on the verge of a photographic masterpiece. Better than the shot of the two cars that got stuck trying to get into the same tollbooth. This would be a series of pictures framed and hung in a massive room in a famous art gallery. "Dueling postmen" he would call it. "No," he thought to himself. "Large Postman Collider. An Experiment in Physics."

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story to teach children about the physical world that may or may not work

Orbitz pretended to consider the offer. It was obviously out of the question. Marriott's CPU was all the way in the Orion cluster. That's where he was heading. To steal her. There was no reason to waste time on a interstellar download. "Not now," said Orbitz. "There'll be time for that."

"How do I know?" asked a voice. It was coming from the door to the corridor. A man stepped onto the bridge. Except for the scars on his body he looked just like Orbitz.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
