Government, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's considering the feasibility of enhancing his monstrous Fiction Corpus with a history of visual art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't question the feasibility of upholding English as a universal language. I don't regard highly the vapid plan by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Enriching one's expertise with a language isn't like launching a more valuable coin. A language - a common tongue - isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to wield with a greater amount of precision. A shared language can't be split from the philosophical currents of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching students to recite English is to cheat them out of its cultural context. A worthy instructor must develop a plan for introducing it; the perceptive pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define a language based on a specific corpus, a body of written language of varying scope and consistency. Such a corpus may contain anything from a book about literature to some real adult fiction stories. I created my "cavernous" Fiction Corpus in order to form a precise kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have shaped a million words and I have investigated them, reshaping them - not merely to teach a language but to describe the human soul, and to provoke that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

As an artist, from the beginning of my adult career, my work had been devoted to the problem of body acceptance, a goal that I would later learn was shared by a whole community of people called naturists, a humble portion of which I discovered residing in Poland, a country whose cultural conservatism does not lend itself readily to forward thinking. One of those forward-thinking Polish naturists happened to be Margo.

As an American, I was full of optimism and confidence bordering on recklessness. I was ready to run the wheels off the car I had just bought and eventually I would. As a European, she was cautious and mistrustful. She needed to make sure the air conditioner worked. Which it did. If you knew how to turn the broken knob in just the right way.

As far apart culturally as we may have been, we spent 6,000 miles in one car. We spent over 40 nights in one tent. We started learning how to listen to each other. We started learning how to accept our differences and how to let them help us instead of driving us apart. Slowly but surely, we started learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Government

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word government in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word government, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word government is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Government in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

But Sadatmo was stupid. Dhagbod was one of the largest fossil fuel shippers in space, but the company, under Sadatmo, had spent ten years and almost all of its revenue in a fruitless war with A/COMP, its rival, which was founded, in the years following Yellowstone, by a man named Shiza Rahpa Lavi, a talented army officer from Earth. During the second explosion of Yellowstone, known as 'The Second Coming,' Lavi stepped down in favor of his son, Moe Shiza Rahpa Lavi. But Moe Shiza was forced by his enemies to seek American aid, which only came with the promise of opportunities to spy on Mars, and with which Moe Shiza was able not only to consolidate his power, but also to accomplish massive growth in transportation and water projects. This success proved to be his downfall, as growing revenue from petroleum sales accentuated Moe Shiza's autocratic leadership: he was unable to hide his unfair distribution policies and other corrupt methods from the average employee. People were so upset, they chased Moe Shiza Rahpa Lavi right into the arms of the Americas. Even after a bunch of disgruntled A/COMP workers captured fifty Americans, the U.S. government refused to let him go. There was chaos in A/COMP. Some kind of hostile take-over was imminent.

Verse 120 from the chapter called Childhood

Terrorism was also big. The very same year that Jesus's mother died, some crazy American blew up a U.S. government space station, killing one hundred and sixty-nine people. Two years earlier, some crazy pirate tried to blow up the Interplanetary Trade Center. Six people died; a thousand more were injured. He claimed his intention was to kill as many as two hundred and fifty thousand Americans by dislodging one of the two great modules that - back in those days - made up the bulk of the orbiting Center. Four years later, the U.S. government claimed that it was A-ron workers that had organized a bomb attack on one of their military bases in outer space the previous year, which had killed a total of nineteen soldiers, wounding more than five hundred.

Verse 310 from the chapter called Adolescence

Your grandfather's actions were famous and had great consequence. Having set a milestone in the history of tort law, they marked a new era in political and legal history. Two years after Jesus's mother died, the government of France took the unprecedented step of admitting its own fault, not only for the terrible lives and health of its citizens, but also for the general atmospheric situation - many thought the move was a purely financial and political one, as the French government was in danger of losing its power and legitimacy, but that was beside the point: it was still a clear moral victory. That same year, many governments won lawsuits against a myriad of industrial giants. For the criminal and tortious acts of polluting the public weal so indiscriminately and mercilessly, those giants were forced to pay, first, sums of over three billion dollars, and then, eleven point three billion dollars, until finally, they were paying settlements of three hundred and sixty-eight point five billion dollars. Hallelujah! said the people. God bless the Law!

Verse 64 from the chapter called Adolescence

In the meanwhile, flagellantism died. Political factions in local government were abusing the honest penitence of clerks and higher officials who found themselves unemployed as a result of their violent piety, and whose former positions were consequently taken by this or that person's nephew. People were angered: there were accusations and counter-accusations and counter-counter-accusations all wrapped up in the process of flagellation. People were implicated in public confessions; then, people's piety was questioned. It was a bloody mess.

Verse 483 from the chapter called Adolescence

The Google Protocol had successfully controlled the emission of dangerous chemicals into the atmosphere by proscribing the unlimited burning of biomass and fossil fuels. The Polish government, which, in the case of European Union protocols, had already established a precedent of absurdity (by, in that case, insisting that restaurants serve soup at exactly sixty-five degrees Celsius and pork cutlets, for example, at exactly seventy-five degrees Celsius or else lose their licenses), took a step further. After several homeowners had successfully sued local Catholic cemeteries for allowing masses and masses of people to light candles on All Saints' Day weekend, the next year, Parliament, under pressure from the Catholic Church to do 'something,' passed a statute which completely outlawed the burning of candles. Obviously, this satisfied no one.

Usage of Government in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Looking from beyond his tinted window, he spied upon the gathering crowds. He looked at every face, conscious of the possibility that she might be wearing different garments. How impossible, he thought. How purely impossible! There was a multitude! He was only looking in one direction: he was looking left. There was no time to look right. He would have to look on that side on the way back. But what if he missed her!

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 2, Understanding Physical Desire, Paragraph 8

But what if he stops wanting her? Then, if he never finds her, it won't be such a failure.

What?

If he stops wanting her, he can stop looking for her.

But he wants her.

That's the fucking problem!

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 2, Understanding Physical Desire, Paragraphs 14-18

As for the last one, this is how it began.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 1, Relations Between Siblings, Paragraph 6

Before long, there was something else on Nike's mind. It was a beautiful realization, and, despite the horrible circumstances, Nike had to celebrate the gorgeous irony. By setting out to find this woman, this beautiful raped woman, he had unwittingly brought himself into the hands of those who would take him to her. Sooner or later, that woman would have to come to the police station, and, if Nike were extremely lucky, there would be a chance to do something. Although, for the life of him, he knew not what that was, and, even though he spent the entire night in jail, he woke up even less prepared.

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: There is a house on Norfolk that no longer stands. Its eaves of pine were reduced to ash. Its worthy frame that I helped build collapsed in a huge fury of smoke and fire that I helped start. I watched it burning from the top of Mount Pitt. I was too ashamed to go any closer. I was there in the room the night my father planned that terrible justice with his friends. I heard them goading each other into teaching their fellow man not to cooperate with the Australian government. It was madness I heard from their lips. They were the drunken lips of dogs waiting to pounce. I said nothing. I did nothing to stop them. When the police came, I lied and said I knew nothing. I climbed Mount Pitt out of morbid curiosity to see what I had wrought. That image of the house whose beams I placed - whose trusses I tied - in the distance - engulfed in flames - is seared upon my mind. I did nothing to stop it. Do you know how sorry I am? If I told you that somebody died in that fire, would it be in your power to forgive me?

Look at all the people who get fat from fast food. You're not gonna put fast food out of business. It's not good for you but so what. As long as the customer knows it's not good. And who doesn't know that drugs and cigarettes are bad. Everybody knows that. They don't need me to tell them. But I'm getting off the subject.

I'm not here to defend our way of life. It is what it is. The money people pay us. Its a tax like any other. It's not my fault people have to pay two taxes. Complain to the other government.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story based on principles of honor coming straight out of Roman mythology

Those other guys weren't cowards. People think I hated them. I didn't hate them. They were doing their thing. Their father was a judge. Our father was a capo. You know. Why wouldn't they go into the family business. They were part of the system. The government. If I was one of them I would've done the same thing. Their way of life was to come to our homes and ruin our way of life. It was a war.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story based on good intentions coming straight out of Roman mythology

After days of detention the shopkeeper started to panic. He claimed he had a pet. He said if the pet was left unfed he would never forgive the government. He demanded to be released. The Astrazeneca did not dispute his claims. The Amazon wondered what and where the pet could be. It was not at any of the shopkeeper's registered domiciles. The man stubbornly refused to say where it was despite his apparant alarm. The Amazon realized he had the answer. The pet was not a dumb animal. The shopkeeper was not afraid for its well-being. He was afraid for himself. The creature was capable of revenge. It was sentient. It was strong enough to free itself yet weak enough to be imprisoned. It was a telepath.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written in honor of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

The case against Captain Orbitz stymied. The investigation plodded on. It was discovered that Orbitz had recently purchased a ship, the Nautilus. It was capable of inter-brane travel. He was seen in private conversation with an enginner from a planet abandoned by the Alliance to marauding Scutus forces. He was in constant contact with the lieutenant in charge of operating the prototype for an automated combat system. All of it curious. None of it meaningful. When the funding for the combat system was discontinued as part of a swath of spending cuts it generated the usual bitterness and threats among the interested parties. Among them turned out to be Orbitz. Within one microarcsecond of the announcement he tendered his resignation. It was an outrage. He was the poster child of the military. If he didn't want to be a courier anymore he could have a desk job. He could be a liaison. Or a recruiter. He didn't have to quit. According to Orbitz he could no longer serve a government that didn't safeguard its own citizens. As far as the Admiralty could tell he was referring to some outlying garbage planet. It was obscene.

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
