Security, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is weighing the idea of extending his gigantic Fiction Corpus with a treatise on print calendars; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't doubt the potency of legislating English as a worldwide lingua franca. I do reject the formalistic steps through which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Fine-tuning a person's intimacy with a language isn't like introducing a stronger crank. A language - a common tongue - isn't merely a tool that you can teach yourself to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A living language can't be ripped from the shared logic of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a person to recite English is to cheat him out of its cultural context. A worthy instructor has to prepare a plan for introducing it; the discerning pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a body of written language of various scope and consistency. A corpus could contain everything from a book about literature to some real science fiction romance. I created my "petty" Fiction Corpus to form a precise type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have crafted a million words and I have sorted them, reframing them - not just to teach the English language but to describe the human spirit, and to encourage that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

By the end of my first week in Europe in 2011, I had bought a car and out of the blue had met the woman who would join me on a 6,000 mile trek across the European continent, sharing the beat-up car that I had bought and the one small tent from Walmart that I had brought along with me on my flight.

I knew naturism was popular in many parts of Europe and as an artist who had worked on body acceptance for his entire career I was keen on documenting some small part of it. Lo and behold, I found a very important part of it hiding in Poland. Her name was Margo.

I had an American passport. She didn't. And the fact that I was driving a car with Polish license plates gave her ample opportunity to point out the difference. It wasn't just police and border guards who ethnically profiled me. Regular folks did it too. One campsite owner didn't shake my hand until he realized I was an American. By that point, I had trained myself to use a simplified English, something that more closely resembled what passes for a lingua franca in Europe these days. Something Margo was trying very hard to master.

I've never gone hungry without deserving it. I've never been systemically beaten by a parent. I've never been fondled by a priest. That doesn't mean I can't listen to somebody who has had to experience such abuse and it doesn't mean I can't try to understand. Margo and I traveled 6,000 miles together. We slept in the same tent. We had to listen to each other. A person shouldn't need 6,000 miles to do it. We should be able to listen to each other just because we want to. We should've been taught to do it. If we haven't been taught, we should be learning how to do it and learning fast.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Security

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word security in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word security, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word security is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Security in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"When you're free," said Jesus, "you can go to the man in charge: the man whose men maybe took those bribes: the man with SECURITA."

Verse 43 from the chapter called Security

Cities were the easiest to control; that's where it was hardest to burn coal. Towns (depending on the number of large buildings equipped with central heating) were, on the whole, less easy. The countryside was uncontrollable (at night, who could see the smoke?) but this fact was tempered somewhat by the presence of Reserve Army troops and Polish troops who were still looking for terrorists. In fact, in the southwestern part of Poland, terrorist attacks in the countryside were becoming more and more frequent. Dispersed from Wroclaw, the terrorists, who, theoretically, had been headed northeast to the area south of Warsaw (that is, the spaceport), having lost whatever element of central command they might have once possessed, or else, not having anything better to do with their time except terrorizing the countryside, had, in general, devolved into a type of terrorist activity that is more accurately described as banditry and brigandage. Their participation in coal traffic was suspected if not assumed.

Verse 25 from the chapter called Security

Amid all the corruption schemes, both seen and unseen, the poorest people suffered the most. Those who had money could easily get by without burning fossil fuels or biomass. All they had to do was buy their own solar cells, for example, to supplement their energy needs. For the poor, it was much different.

Verse 20 from the chapter called Security

Usage of Security in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

But how is a man supposed to love his wife? I suppose the answer is: with as much attraction, devotion, attention, and loyalty he can muster; with affection, attachment and admiration: of course. But is there anything exclusive about their love? Their feelings must be intense: there is no doubt. And their admiration must be very informed.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 7, The Seventh Day, Part 1, Strength & Security Sector Reform, Section 2, Facing a Choice, Paragraph 17

Finally, there's the soul, which we believe permeates both body and mind, and with which we associate what we call 'agape,' that unselfish loyalty or concern (the former based on common interest; the latter based on benevolence) which we direct toward God, to our fellow man, and, I daresay, even to the Devil. This good will (which only sometimes is complemented by common interest) has led us to seek equality and diversity in both national and domestic economies. It turns us into 'partners.'

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 7, The Seventh Day, Part 1, Strength & Security Sector Reform, Section 2, Facing a Choice, Paragraph 5

But when we consider this transitive aspect of love, we can find two things that are distinguished by it. These two things are affection and attachment. Both of them are associated with love - but affection is intransitive: it is the state of being affected by one's feelings, whereas attachment is a transitive thing: it affects not only one's self but someone else, since attachment is the connection felt by two affected persons.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 7, The Seventh Day, Part 1, Strength & Security Sector Reform, Section 2, Facing a Choice, Paragraph 8

But: what if we consider love, not as a state or a connection, but like an orientation? It seems to me that sexual desire, personal ties, ties of kinship, and even benevolence are rooted in something I would call admiration. That is, in order to feel attraction, devotion, attention, or concern, one must first be oriented toward these feelings. One cannot feel attraction without feeling admiration first.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 7, The Seventh Day, Part 1, Strength & Security Sector Reform, Section 2, Facing a Choice, Paragraph 9

Indiana was standing by Albert. I said to myself: "I think that's who they were." I went over to the window. After a moment, I stood close behind Indiana. She whispered something; I leaned in closer.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 7, The Seventh Day, Part 1, Strength & Security Sector Reform, Section 1, Spending the Night with a Lover, Paragraph 4

Usage of Security in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Proctor found the key. He decided a man carrying a carpet was probable cause. He entered the apartment. It didn't take long to find a photo. It was vic number three. Proctor called in the cavalry. He ordered a search. His phone rang. It was the captain. "Vic number two's fingerprints were in the database," He said. "He got busted for cocaine three years prior. I talked to his bondsman. Says an artist by the name of John Gamble put up security for him." At the sound of the name Proctor audibly swallowed. He wondered if the captain had heard.

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring more than one dead body put in a weird position

Captain Orbitz came from a long line of distinguished galactic luminaries. His father and his brother had been martyred in a great battle against the forces of Scutum-Centauris. His grandfather was a delagate to the Grand Orion Council from the planet Vancouver. His lineage went all the way to one of the leaders of the original humanoid slave revolt. He was sacrosanct. When his name was red-flagged at the security bureau it was summarily dismissed as an error. It was red-flagged again. And again. Somebody by the name of Rishi Keplar Jorgen Tycho Kalvinicus Orbitz was having associations with the outlawed Wiki-en Society. People went crazy. They wanted him arrested. They wanted him interrogated. There was only one problem. Orbitz was on assignment. He was the second longest-serving courier in the Alliance. He was traversing a wormhole.

Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others.
