Stockings, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal refuses to contemplate the potency of enlarging his unimpressive Fiction Corpus with a history of picture art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I regard highly the soundness of implementing English as a worldwide language. I don't regard highly the routinely sanctioned route by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Upgrading a person's knowledge of a language isn't like introducing a sharper needle. A language - a living language - isn't merely an instrument that you can learn to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A common tongue can not be sundered from the prevailing culture of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a man recite English is to deprive him of its cultural context. A worthy educator has to find a method of introducing it; the wisest pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define words based on a specific corpus, a body of writing of various size and consistency. This corpus could contain anything from a biography of the world's top fiction authors to many books of fiction. I suffered many a sleepless night forging my "lowly" Fiction Corpus to form a distinct genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have sculpted a million words and I have anatomized them, reframing them - not merely to teach an American tongue but to defend the human soul, and to coax that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Stockings

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word stockings in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word stockings, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word stockings is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Stockings in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

How much pain and suffering those balls of stocking must have caused! Not all of them were bad: for years, Jesus sold brown nylon stockings to local women, both young and old, at five dollars a piece; cotton stockings were slightly less popular, but cotton panty hose and tights were best-sellers for kids. Jesus's clientele was too poor to be fashionable; if it had been, perhaps your father might have sold more cotton stockings, considering the vogue for nineteenth century wardrobes.

Verse 182 from the chapter called Adolescence

"They traffic heroin," I said. "They hide the drugs in bags full of silk stockings. One of your fiancé's relatives left behind a bag that fell from his pocket. My sister found it, she sniffed it, and she fell from a third-story window and broke her neck."

Verse 776 from the chapter called Bohemia

"Yes: this is the one you'd be working in, Jesus. The storefront's on the other side. Not many people come in. It's pretty small - not a very good location, either. It's a block away from the main road, but there's nothing else around: nothing that would attract people. I keep it closed most of the time; the other stores are more important: I use this one mostly for storage. Local people buy stockings: that's about it."

Verse 177 from the chapter called Adolescence

As it was, very few rich people came inside. In fact, the only rich people Jesus ever saw were grizzly, young men. They weren't dressed like it, but they must have been Capitalists: you could tell by the wads of cash they carried. They only bought silk stockings - not individually, but in specially marked boxes, labeled 'premium silk,' made to order and carefully prepared by Jesus's uncle in the back room. They were always picked up at specific times. If anyone else tried to buy silk stockings at some random time that was not previously designated, Jesus was not allowed to sell them. In fact, if anyone asked, they were always out of stock, even if silk stockings were lying around in heaps in the back room. Even if regular silk-stocking customers came and asked for 'premium silk,' Jesus was not allowed to take orders - presumably, his uncle took them. This was not something Jesus ever actually witnessed; nor did he ever actually see his uncle preparing silk-stocking boxes: he only sold them at specifically scheduled times to specifically scheduled people - "nobody else, God forbid," his uncle would often repeat.

"Why not?" asked Jesus.

Verses 183-184 from the chapter called Adolescence

By the time he was eighteen years old, Jesus, unfortunately, had almost unwilling become his uncle's regular drinking partner. The small store would close whenever they felt like it - or, more accurately, whenever Jesus's uncle felt like it - preferably around noon, so they could go and drink. More and more often, Jesus had to think up excuses, like, for example, his desire to visit Cracow with 'some girlfriend,' which, if he really wanted to 'enjoy himself,' would require him to sell just a few more stockings. There wasn't much regular business, of course, with the exception of silk stockings - but those were always scheduled. "Come on," his uncle said, "I'll buy you a drink. You work too hard."

Verse 349 from the chapter called Adolescence

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Upon reaching the downstairs room, I closed the door. Going to the sofa, I began to strip. I unbuttoned half my blouse before I tore it off. Unzipping my skirt, I started tugging it down my thighs. I cursed myself for wearing stockings. Rolling one of them down, I looked at the clock: one minute before midnight. Tearing off the rest of my underwear, I cursed myself for wearing so much clothing - but, standing in the middle of the room stark naked, I now approached the fireplace. Kneeling before it, I opened its doors. I looked inside: it was very dirty; the flue was closed. I opened it, letting a small cloud of ash fall: I cursed myself for not preparing it earlier. I looked at the clock. There was still time. I turned myself around, my back facing the fireplace, and, positioning my hands behind me, I felt the cold tile.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

The baths were on the other side of the stadium. It was the only place to bathe in Sams Town. Tatum marched to the lobby in a matter of minutes. Placing her shoes and her stockings into a locker, she hastened down the tiled corridor. She passed vaulted chambers one by one. Pools of water stretched to the walls. It was odd to see Manga People naked. There was nothing between their legs.

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story about what it means to turn people away

Tatum stormed off. Neal climbed out. He begged her to stop. Naked and dripping wet, he followed Tatum down the corridor. "How do you know I had anything to do with it? Maybe a random crook stole your PDA." He watched Tatum put on her shoes. She took her stockings in her hand. Without so much as giving Neal a dirty look, she left.

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring a weird race of aliens

"They're sexy," she said. "If you get cold, you can put on some thick stockings." She picked out some lightly tiered prairie skirts. "Beautiful. Wear the longer ones with high-heeled boots."

Tatum offered to buy Miss April a drink. "Absolutely not," she said. "It's courtesy Judge Doc Uzumaki."

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring a lesbian detective

The woman in the waiting room sat watching the secretary put files away. She couldn't help it. For an office worker on the moon, the secretary was extravagantly dressed. Sheer black stockings hugged her legs. A short, tan skirt stretched from one cheek to the other. Thin, white crape billowed over her shoulders like tissue paper.

The skirt on the proctor was distracting. It was too tight. Her sheer stockings weren't helping either. Her face did leave something to be desired. She suddenly looked up. Sir Lewis averted his eyes. He tried to concentrate. Five minutes remaining on the clock and one problem left unsolved.

– from “The Skirt on the Proctor,” a kid story about the romantic struggle we all face

Something drains from above. It is my comrade. She pours in through the hole of my skull. We are together again. I open my bags and pull out memories for us to share.
