Surge, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is debating the possibility of amplifying his lofty Fiction Corpus with even more experimental fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I think highly of the prospect of upholding English as a global standard. I don't think highly of the altogether ordinary fashion in which the English language is taught.Pointer

Polishing a person's skill with a language isn't like producing a wider canal. A language - a spoken tongue - is not just an instrument that you can learn to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A shared tongue can't be unlinked from the shared logic of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a student recite English is to rob him of its cultural context. A capable educator must have a strategy for introducing it; the smartest pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language based on a particular corpus, a set of writing of varying scope and consistency. They can include anything from a book about literature to some panchatantra stories translated into modern English. I watched many moons pass creating my "staggering" Fiction Corpus in order to form a peculiar type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have strung together a million words and I have evaluated them, reframing them - not merely to teach a language but to reveal the human spirit, and to coax that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Surge

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word surge in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word surge, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word surge is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Surge in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"That's the Center for Replantation of Appendages, Microsurgery, Hand Surgery, and General Surgery. I believe it's also the County Hospital."

Zoe laughed.

Verses 444-445 from the chapter called Security

The problem of finding out when the shipment occurred was, to a certain extent, easy enough. Of course, it was necessary to assume that the shipment took place not only during the terrorist insurgency in Germany, but also along the same route that regular Polish army shipments took, and that the vehicle used was a diesel truck. These were all safe assumptions, but they were assumptions nonetheless. The arms were from a factory in Brno - that was for sure: the serial numbers didn't lie - but whether or not the arms were first sent somewhere else before entering Poland was anybody's guess. During the terrorist insurgency, most borders had been closed. If anyone had been trying to smuggle 'misplaced' arms, the safest way would've been to disguise them as a regular army shipment. That was the premise on which Jesus's effort was based.

Verse 33 from the chapter called Security

My cousin Stalin was able to procure for us a record of all authorized shipments from the Czech Republic, especially those from Brno which had passed through the southwestern border since the terrorist insurgency in Germany. Meanwhile, Sapper was sent with a blank check to the diesel fuel station at the border - "the only diesel fuel station around for miles," according to his old friend Washington Dulles. Your father told him to buy everything: the whole station: the building, the record books, the fuel. Sapper got it all for a nice, little price. The owner almost blew his load out of gratitude.

Verse 34 from the chapter called Security

"Let me finish. From the east, the south, and the west, the army's covering the City Moat. What does this mean? This means we can't go onto St. Nicholas' or Ruska Street; we can't just let Silesian Insurgents' Street take us directly into Town Square; the only possible chance we have is to go from the southeast: there's a mess of roads by Warsaw Insurgents' Place, and beyond that: there's the park: that's the weak link in the cordon around the Old Town. Terrorists have been causing havoc; they've been attacking all the checkpoints, but especially around the park, there's not even a checkpoint to be spoken of: it's a bullet-ridden sieve. That's why they're defending Grunwald Bridge; if they could secure the park, they wouldn't have to.

Verse 119 from the chapter called Arms

"Don't laugh," said Jesus. "The best hand surgeons in the country, if not Europe, work there."

Verse 446 from the chapter called Security

Usage of Surge in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I was the first to hear about it, but I can't say I followed all the news concerning its development. Obviously I know that the surgery was successful, and was executed with minimal side effects. But apart from that, I know very little, and it seems to me there was a lot more going on around that time. For instance, I do believe that was when your efforts to obtain employment, and the efforts of Indiana's husband, for a moment strangely coincided, and you received your curious invitation to work. Albert was in London - I don't remember which trip it was, nor do I recall exactly when the whole episode took place. Why would I have remembered such a thing? The whole affair was so bothersome to me; there was no reason for me to remember anything: I chose to forget.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 31, Receiving A Curious Invitation, Paragraph 1

NIKE: A man? I think so - or was, who knows? She might be post-op. Did you see the one back there with the screwed up surgery? Man! What was she doing on the side of the road? Stay in the bushes.

LUKA: This is incredible.

NIKE: It's a freak show out here. I'm waiting for the transmidgets to pop out.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 20, Encountering the Sex Trade, Paragraphs 69-71

NIKE: What do you think: I'm gonna pop a nut? Don't worry, Doc: it's back on for good.

DOC: This kind of surgery is...a delicate...

NIKE: My balls are delicate: don't start telling me about fucking surgery.

DOC: Mr. Romanov, you are very lucky that only the scrotum was torn.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 8, Being a Victim, Paragraphs 12-15

NIKE: So what happened with that?

ANDY: Oh, yeah, well, he had surgeries and everybody thought he had beaten it.

NIKE: So you didn't expect anything like this.

ANDY: Oh, no: I had no suspicion whatsoever.

NIKE: And Indiana?

ANDY: I have no idea.

NIKE: She must've known.

ANDY: I just don't know.

NIKE: You don't think so?

ANDY: I don't know.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 10, The Male Dilemma, Paragraphs 1-10

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Surgeons claimed Braccio would live. For three days, he lay in Caldora's tent, neither speaking nor eating, as if he were trying to die. Ferrari was brought in to cheer him up with light-hearted songs. Nothing worked. On the third day, he gave up his ghost.

"The first ones didn't have a choice. Our government forced experimental surgery on them. It's one of the reasons there's so much distrust. At least it made them fight for their rights. Manga People enjoy huge responsibilities now. They don't just work on the power grid, they manage it. The near side relies on them for power. Why do you think we're in the dark instead of them? The Manga People are afraid to let humans suffer. They'd be risking intervention. The truth is they could hold the near side for ransom."

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story about a woman who doesn't like to take shit from anyone

It wasn't long before Shephard took Clark aside. He said, "I have a plan. Twenty-four hours a day, tankers drive down the desert highway. They're full of oil. If we help these people steal some of it, they can sell it to Kyrgyz caravans. Pepsi's tribe crosses the border every week. We can make arrangements with the refinery in Jalal-Abad. They will buy it. We could fund ourselves an insurgency. Congress would never have to get its hands dirty. Everybody wins-except the Chinese."

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: I didn't really care for him.

GREY GOOSE: Tom the anesthesiologist?

KOKOMO: He was funny.

GREY GOOSE: Douglas the airline pilot?

FLETCHER: At least he wasn't a doctor.

GREY GOOSE: Joe the Gynecologist?

KOKOMO: He made me smile.

GREY GOOSE: What about the oral and maxillofacial surgeon? The computer information systems manager? You were nothing before me. I made you.

FLETCHER: Kokomo will have to wear a burqa for the rest of her life around here. This was a Sunday operation before he came and screwed it all up. Do you know why you kept getting looks in town? It wasn't what he did; it was what he said. He had everybody on Norfolk thinking you had hired the best piece of faffy this side of Hawai'i. Some of them thought that you were in on it - that you were behind it all.

GREY GOOSE: This is some kind of gratitude.

Usage of Surge in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Two years and still counting. No word from the devil. The bitch made promises. A fat check. Enough to pay for surgery. Where is she now? Two yards under. Seventy-two inches. I did the math. The scientist in the east wing told me that much soil would weigh about a ton. That's two thousand pounds. Way more than I can lift. I'm a big girl. The bitch that took my cigarettes was a tiny little thing. Even if she did come back from hell she'd never get out from under that earth. Unless they dig a hole next to her. I wish I knew where she was buried. I could do something about it.

Natural + Life

Large Wall Art Depicting the Human Landscape

Life is a spinning sphere with Joy at one pole and Sadness at the other. Each continuously feeding its pair. Joy flanked by the emotions of Trust on one side, Surprise on the other. Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others. Multiplied and divided, in equal parts. Such that to those from whom it has been subtracted, we must add. Until we are whole.
