Feeling, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to consider the concept of extending his monolithic Fiction Corpus with a history of tattoo art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the soundness of promulgating English as a common language for the world. I don't trust in the certifiably commonplace scheme by which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Beefing up one's dexterity with a language isn't like making a hotter kiln. A language - a common tongue - is not just an instrument that you can learn to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A living tongue can't be disentangled from the philosophical currents of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to strip her of its cultural context. An informed teacher has to find a method of introducing it; the wisest pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define words based on a particular corpus, a set of written works of varying scope and consistency. They can include anything from a book about literature to some truly brilliant kindergarten stories. I lost many a night forging my "massive" Fiction Corpus in order to form a new genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have codified them, reshaping them - not merely to teach the English tongue but to describe the human spirit, and to propel that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

In June of 2011 I arrived in Europe for what I hoped would be a great adventure; my only concrete plan, to visit Croatia. By September I had driven 6,000 miles and visited 12 different countries, all with a woman I met on the first Friday of my trip.

I had come to Europe to document people practicing naturism. Preliminary arrangements had been made to meet with an Egyptian nudist visiting the Continent and there was some kind of Pan-European gathering scheduled to take place in Croatia. I had arranged for an assistant to come along with me to help with anything I needed, but when her passport was stolen the night before we were supposed to leave, my plans went awry. I decided on something less ambitious. I would visit a naturist sauna in the city of Bielsko-Biala, Poland which I had just found on the internet. When I got there, I met Margo.

Being from America, all I had to do in Europe was turn on the radio to hear an American song. All I had to do was walk into a movie theater to see an American movie. To be understood all I had to do was speak English. Being from Poland, she couldn't stand listening to the radio for all the political nonsense being bandied about. She didn't like watching American movies because she claimed they all ended the same way. She didn't want to speak English with me because she not only wanted to say things correctly but she wanted to say them her way and nobody had ever succeeded in teaching her how. I desperately wanted to understand. She wanted to be understood.

As far apart culturally as we may have been, we spent 6,000 miles in one car. We spent over 40 nights in one tent. We started learning how to listen to each other. We started learning how to accept our differences and how to let them help us instead of driving us apart. Slowly but surely, we started learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Feeling

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word feeling in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word feeling, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word feeling is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Feeling in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

At the age of sixteen, Jesus made the mistake of sharing a drink with his uncle. After that, it was only 'after meals,' when the men would stick around, waiting for another bottle of rectified spirits. Jesus felt like a man, being included, and, considering his expertise in all things American, his feeling was not unjustified. At the age of sixteen, there were important things he had to say about life in general, but especially about Americans. More often than not, he was defending them. Not everyone was ready to accept his authority, but, nevertheless, he was drinking. That counted.

Verse 348 from the chapter called Adolescence

And so it was that Jesus was made to pursue two disparate things at once: your mother's love and Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's head. Zoe's trust in your father was essential to both goals and Jesus took pains to nurture it. His own trust in Zoe was strong, but, nevertheless, plagued by doubts and anger inspired by Zoe's incomplete control over her feelings. Jesus never revealed to her either of his two goals during this process, but, then again, your mother never mentioned the word 'love' either, nor did she ever inquire as to Jesus's intentions concerning the Krupniks. If she had asked, 'Do you love me?' or 'Do you intend to kill Leonard Cohen-Krupnik?' Jesus would've had to say 'Yes' and 'Yes.' He was not afraid of being honest. However, since your mother was afraid, or too naïve, or too oblivious, or, most probably of all, too sensitive to ask either of those two questions, Jesus felt justified in his actions. After all, Zoe agreed to unscrew the vent in Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's bathroom. What did she think I was going to do? Take a shower?

Verse 1121 from the chapter called Security

At one point, a stomach virus was going around. Sapper was hit two days before Jesus felt it. The night before your father got sick, he made himself sausages and ate them with ketchup. A week earlier, Jesus had felt a craving for ketchup, and, ordering Sapper to buy as many different varieties as he could find, Jesus had been given mild and spicy ketchup, ketchup in glass jars and plastic bottles, ketchup with and without onions, and so forth and so on. Jesus had the virus for a good four days: the first day was the worst: that night he vomited four times. The second day was better, but he still couldn't eat anything. The third day, Jesus was still confined to bed, but at least he was eating. On the fourth day, Jesus thought he was fine. That night, he ate sausages with ketchup. Waking up in the wee hours of the morning, Jesus vomited and felt his stomach tumbling and twisting and turning around. The feeling was gut-wrenching. Jesus concentrated all his psychophysical effort into calming his stomach. It worked, but it also required all of Jesus's attention. He couldn't sleep. When he moved a finger, his stomach rebelled. If his eyelids twitched, he lost concentration. Jesus had to give up. Suffering great pain, he thought to himself: they've poisoned me! like they did to that Ukrainian.

Verse 478 from the chapter called Arms

"A few months ago," she said. "Maybe a few weeks - I don't know: I don't remember. I wasn't feeling too well back in those days. The monkey cheered me up, though. Do you know why Sacha bought me this kind of monkey and not some other kind?"

I shook my head.

Verses 747-748 from the chapter called Bohemia

I had said good evening, having had no idea that my colleagues were about to strike. I would've been blameless, but I relished my feelings of power and whimsy - no matter how vicarious they had to be, considering my own restraint: for, when I was young, I never had to shatter glass. That came later.

Verse 342 from the chapter called Adolescence

Usage of Feeling in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

And we're talking about Indiana, which means her behavior was remarkably erratic. Her emotions were something worse than five rollercoasters put together: she would be high one moment and low the next - there wasn't even a climb up or a fall down: just up, then down - the most exciting thing I've ever seen or lived - at least in low doses: I couldn't deal with those feelings for long.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 3, Wondering, Paragraph 5, Clauses 3-5

But by describing this malaise, I do not mean to imply that these people are accustomed to death - that is a good thing if they have it; my suspicion is that many of these people - and not just in the hospital but outside as well - many of these people walking around are unaccustomed to life. I'm not sure what I mean - perhaps I mean that these people are too familiar with their pedestrian existence - but no matter what I mean, I do have the feeling that many of the patients here would know what I'm trying to describe - I'm sure those people have plenty of poetry to share - but they are not in this room with me, are they? They are not locked in a room with a sleeping dead man; nor do I think they are trying to give their sisters poetry. They are trying to survive, and that is plenty poetic for anyone.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 2, Poetics, Paragraph 6, Clauses 5-8

Now that I've organized my thoughts, I think I've discovered something: that which is purely love has a very specific nature, which is not shared by the many other things we associate with it. These things can be distinguished by their place of origin. Thanks to the body, we experience attraction, otherwise known as 'eros,' a feeling based on sexual desire that turns us into 'lovers.' Thanks to the spirit, or what we otherwise call the heart, we experience enthusiastic devotion, which springs from a combination of higher feelings, what we otherwise call emotions, which are based on personal ties. These feelings are the basis of 'romance,' which, out of all things associated with love, is the most subject to personality, and which, depending on what our personalities are like, turns us into 'spouses,' whether we espouse a person or a cause.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 7, The Seventh Day, Part 1, Strength & Security Sector Reform, Section 2, Facing a Choice, Paragraph 3

I hope that I have somehow conveyed the nature of these experiences. But they are so diverse, and the only common element is this feeling in my loins that I can hardly begin to describe. And I have felt it around you many times. But around you, I don't usually employ my imagination. The most powerful experience I had with you came very simply.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 5, Inflammation of the Loins, Paragraph 4, Clauses 1-5

But he was always telling his stories to other people. Some of them I would hear several times, depending on the company we shared, but never, not once, was I personally privileged with a story. His opinions I would hear, sometimes even his principles; he always shared his feelings, which is something I rarely did and only with great difficulty; on the other hand, he rarely gossiped, but he offered countless anecdotes, often involving other people; none of these, however, were stories, which included all these elements and more besides.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 5, Falling in Love, Paragraph 4, Clauses 4-7

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Dorothea clenched her jaw. "Well?" she asked. "Do I have an answer?" Her son stared blankly. She continued, "I understand you have feelings for her. I'm not asking you never to see her again. I simply want you to give me your assurance that you won't marry her."

"I can't," said Junior. "I love her."

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story featuring a frank discussion of one man's misdeeds

I looked through the window. The shadow of trees-immense, floating, rustling things-terrified me. The feeling grew. It stretched towards me like a tube of darkness. It burst through the window. It skewered me. In vain, I grasped at the door. I was pulled into the middle of the seat.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring the beautiful city of Paris

Tatum went back to her apartment with a vicarious feeling of accomplishment. She decided the assignment wouldn't be so bad after all. Monkey Ball would get her writing again. Reaching her door, Tatum swiped her keycard. The lock beeped. The light turned green. Tatum pushed the door open.

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring marginalized people

Junior shook his head. "I have to get married," he told himself. The feeling was genuine. If there had been a hall of fame for perverts, he would already have been inducted. At long last, after a glorious career, Miles Jeremy Jefferson retired.

Nyota shook her head. She whispered, "I'm sorry. I didn't know she had put you in such an awful position. If there's anything I can do to please her, let me know. I'll do it. Just promise me you won't put the horse at risk, no matter what your feelings are for me."

Junior clutched his brow. "There's nothing you can do," he said. "It's who you are. It's because you're black."

Usage of Feeling in Sorry Ms. Jackson

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

(MS. JACKSON exits.)

KOKOMO: Oh, bittersweet news! That I might have my mistress's blessing to wed her son - her firstborn and only son: her pride and joy - and make a Catholic out of a Christian, when she knows her line - her ancient English stock - would rest entirely in my womb, fills me with great joy; but since that stock, if Madam's fears be true, is filled with an urge to plant one's seed in every jar and hole - to roam rakishly over the countryside regardless of warmth at home - I must gird myself to the possibility that my loins will not be enough: that fear of the yoke will upset my plan to reveal with success this very night my feelings to my beloved Fletcher!

– ACT II, line 28

FLETCHER: You thought Norfolk had a checkered past. Being a former prison colony's prison colony is nothing next to Pitcairn.

ALICE: I would never have imagined it was like that. I thought it was a paradise.

FLETCHER: I'm writing a play about it - specifically about the woman who chopped off that man's head. She's an ancestor of mine. Maybe later we can go over a few scenes.

ALICE: I'd love to.

FLETCHER: If your neck doesn't still hurt.

ALICE: I'm feeling much better now, thank you.

FLETCHER: If you strained it, you strained it. I have to say, you have surprisingly little tension.

ALICE: It's my honeymoon. I've been having lots of sex.

FLETCHER: You shouldn't have reminded me.

ALICE: Why not?

– ACT I, lines 626-635

ALICE: It's difficult. I like it. Sometimes I do wish he were more sensual.

MS. JACKSON: I know the feeling.

ALICE: When we have sex, it's all about the penetration. There is no foreplay.

LESBIAN: Nothing?

ALICE: Spread 'em and weep.

MS. JACKSON: Men are such animals - present company excepted, of course.

ALICE: Did you see that performance they put on?

LESBIAN: Absolutely dreadful.

ALICE: I thought it was sexy.

LESBIAN: It reminds me of a dance I saw in Fiji.

– ACT I, lines 394-403

FLETCHER: Oh, marriage! Where would man be without thy warm bondage? Those who fear the rope will never know the pleasure of being tied up: of pushing with all one's might only to stand still. It is a perverse joy, indeed, to take the plunge through the trapdoor: to hear one's soul snapping in two, pushing one's heart into one's throat: to say the words, 'I do.' To wed and then to bed - how old-fashioned an order! One cannot help but desire permanence in such an ever-changing world. To oppose it, lashed to a rock, feeling its weight crush one's spirit, may be a Promethean punishment best reserved for the noble. It is no wonder that only the force of custom and law kept so many together for so long. Matrimony is not for the faint of heart. So watch out, you concubines and concubinaries - you cohabitants and live-in friends: both cataracts and calm pools await you, but no peace at that river's end: just the wide, gaping maw of dissoluteness and abandon: the ocean of human desire, with nothing to do but sink. So swim home, like salmon, and enjoy rest: the comfort you get from being tied up. My prayers were answered: I am a man again - and soon to be more: a husband. Wish me luck, for the night is still young, and many acts of husbandry await me.

– ACT II, line 550

ALICE: Did somebody die?

FLETCHER: Don't ask.

ALICE: Yes.

FLETCHER: Even if your husband had died?

ALICE: It would.

FLETCHER: I've been wanting to confess this for so long. The island makes it hard. Who would have understood me if I had spoken? My mother? I pay my penance every time I hear her cry. She has no idea what part I played in that fire. I can't help feeling that, if I had stopped it, this family would never have had the problems it's had. Nobody died in that fire except for me. It was my own soul burning. As far as the house is concerned, restitution's been made. As for me, who would not find my weakness and ignore it? for the sake of convenience if not for shame. Who would restore my strength from the ashes?

ALICE: Let it be me. I will restore you.

FLETCHER: This is why I've been pursuing you. I knew you'd never give in to me. I saw your strength the moment you arrived: its grace: its beauty. I fell in love with it. I desired it - not for myself, but for its ability to release me from this guilt.

ALICE: Let me release you, Fletcher Christian. I will make you whole again.

FLETCHER: You will forgive me my crime?

– ACT II, lines 184-193

Usage of Feeling in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

My mind went blank. What did envy look like? I had no image for it - only a word. Was it something I could draw? What were its features? A circle? A square? A diamond? Something indescribable. Was it evil? Was it nothing? An illusion? Indiana claimed she envied us. She was lying.

Silence surrounded me. I wondered what everybody else was feeling. I thought you might be imagining Indiana naked. Why not? She asked for it.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that might help overcome one's sense of unease depending on your outlook

The wedding was postponed. Steve O got a chance to look deep into his heart. He explored his feelings. Adam helped Steve O realize that enjoying a finger up the bum had nothing to do with being gay. It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
