Feet, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is ruminating on the practicality of beefing up his ordinary Fiction Corpus with some very fictional stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't challenge the soundness of promulgating English as the international community's second language. I don't think highly of the prevailing technique by which English is presented for study.Pointer

Beefing up a person's mastery of a language isn't like promoting a sharper needle. A language - a spoken language - is not merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to manipulate with greater amounts of precision. A shared tongue cannot be torn from the competing values of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make people recite English is to deprive them of its cultural context. A proper teacher has to develop a plan for introducing it; the smartest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of written language of varying size and consistency. A corpus might contain everything from a book about literature to some very short stories. I lost many a night developing my "humungous" Fiction Corpus in order to form a new type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have sculpted a million words and I have broken them down, reframing them - not simply to teach English vocabulary but to promote the human soul, and to propel that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Help Replace Defamation With Truth in ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

As an artist, from the beginning of my adult career, my work had been devoted to the problem of body acceptance, a goal that I would later learn was shared by a whole community of people called naturists, a humble portion of which I discovered residing in Poland, a country whose cultural conservatism does not lend itself readily to forward thinking. One of those forward-thinking Polish naturists happened to be Margo.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

Do unto others as you would have done unto you. But how to judge what we would want done to us if we've never been in somebody else's shoes? If we've never been abandoned by our mother, how do we treat somebody who has? Somebody who seems to constantly suffer the repurcussions of it? Margo and I had 46 days and 6,000 miles to try on each other's shoes. We had one car and one tent in which to hear each other's words. We learned to cooperate. We started learning how to listen.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Feet

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word feet in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word feet, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word feet is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Feet in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"Look at me," she whined. "I'm the most misproportioned woman on the planet. I've got huge Martian feet; short, stubby Japanese legs; a gigantic forehead; no chin."

Verse 794 from the chapter called Security

It read: COUNTRY OF BIRTH: Poland; COMPLEXION: blank; COLOR OF EYES: blank; COLOR OF HAIR: blank; HEIGHT: five FEET, zero INCHES; WEIGHT: blank POUNDS; VISIBLE DISTINCTIVE MARKS: blank; MARITAL STATUS: single. I CERTIFY THAT THE DESCRIPTION ABOVE GIVEN IS TRUE, AND THAT THE PHOTOGRAPH AFFIXED HERETO IS A LIKENESS OF ME. Signed, blank.

Verse 4 from the chapter called Adolescence

Those were the days when I first began hearing my voices. FUCK GOD! they said. FUCK JESUS CHRIST, BULLSHIT SON OF GOD! They said terrible things like that. FUCK JESUS CHRIST! they said. FUCK JESUS! JESUS! JESUS! JESUS! JESUS! JESUS! JESUS! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! I heard them in church during Mass. I HATE GOD! No, I don't! I HATE GOD! No, I don't hate God! HATE GOD! HATE GOD! HATE GOD! HATE GOD! No: fuck it! FUCK IT! FUCK IT! FUCK IT! FUCK IT! FUCK IT! FUCK IT! FUCK IT! HATE GOD! HATE GOD! HATE GOD! HATE GOD! Stop it! HATE GOD! HATE GOD! Fuck it, stop! JESUS CHRIST BULLSHIT! SON OF GOD BULLSHIT! FUCK IT JESUS CHRIST BULLSHIT! GOD MOTHERFUCKING BULLSHIT! I would crush the words and throw them out. I would tear them apart and stuff them inside a cannon. I would hold them there inside that cannon for as long as possible, but they were strong. They would push themselves out. Before they did, I would have to run to the other side and light the cannon, shooting those despicable voices out of my head - BOOM! - usually they would land about ten feet away. Then they'd crawl back. They were demons. FUCK GOD! they said. FUCK JESUS CHRIST! FUCK JESUS CHRIST! FUCK JESUS CHRIST! FUCK JESUS CHRIST! FUCK JESUS CHRIST! Stop it motherfucker! FUCK JESUS! FUCK JESUS! FUCK JESUS! FUCK JESUS! FUCK JESUS! Stop it! I HATE JESUS! No, I don't hate Buddha - CHRIST! I HATE JESUS CHRIST! I HATE JESUS CHRIST! I HATE JESUS CHRIST! I HATE JESUS CHRIST! They were never-ending: these fucked-up voices. I would hit my own head against the wall, but nothing happened. Sometimes, they would last for hours - I drove my head against pillows; I shook my head; I would hit my own head, but nothing helped. My mind kept cursing God - no: it wasn't my mind; I knew my mind: these were voices. They were saying these things inside, but they were coming from outside. They were saying these terrible things. I wasn't saying them. I wasn't thinking them. I was hearing them. I knew that. I was positive. I was convinced: the devil was whispering in my ear.

Verse 237 from the chapter called Childhood

"It was my husband's fault," she continued. "He let your father do what he did. I never agreed to it. I don't care what principle you cite; life is more important. Money can rot in hell. My daughter didn't need martyrdom; she needed fresh air! That's why we moved here in the first place - not that it helped. Your father took advantage of that. What a louse! My husband, too! He called himself a poet. He was a baker by trade! His words were always half-baked, like his bread. He lied! (God rest his soul.) When I was next to him, I was 'beloved.' When he was gone, selling his bread, it was somebody else who was sweeter than wine, sweeter than roses, sweeter than his own goddamn urine! Lousy diabetic. I was only there to rub his feet, put cream on his puffed-up anus. He went to orgies! Down the street! At his great friend, Trojanowski's house: he was eighty years old! He was hosting orgies!"

"Orgies?"

Verses 250-251 from the chapter called Adolescence

Fortune, however, does not favor the proud, nor does humility sit well on horseback. There's something divine about walking on one's own two feet, especially when one is walking all day long. The loudspeakers being carried on the backs of young volunteers, through which the priests gave their benedictions and sound advice, were not capable of disrupting the rhythm of an honest pilgrim: one-two, one-two, one-two was, by noon, entrancing. For those who traveled on horseback, even those whose greatest sympathies lay with the faithful and God's plan, the differences in rhythm were great enough to alienate us, however unconsciously, from the pedestrians, which tempted us (or, at least, me) to feel that somehow we were higher and more chosen by God, which, upon reflection, if reflection awareness allowed, was a feeling that, if cherished, would seem to place us, the hired servants of the archbishop, but no less the servants of God, in the same rank as those who, seated at their outdoor tables at the public house, laughed and jeered and goofily waved at the smiling and honest greetings of the pilgrim.

Usage of Feet in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Then there was a dog: not in the clouds, but walking around me - a big, smelly black dog. I was still lying down, and I was wearing shoes: so I couldn't be sure, but I thought the dog was licking my feet. I propped myself onto my elbows and sure enough: the dog was licking my shoes. I kicked him in the face - not too hard, of course, but enough to get the message across.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 18, Understanding Chastity, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1-4

The subject of my latest vision - although I really should not call them visions: my experiences involve the entire sensual organ system. They are not limited to eyes or ears or the touch. They involve my entire organism, from the feeling of the ground underneath my feet, to the involuntary fancies of the mind's eyes.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 5, Inflammation of the Loins, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1-3

Meanwhile, I began fiddling with the radio. But Indiana was right: there was no reception. Unless I stood exactly five feet away to the northeast, which caused a sort of rhythmic droning, there was nothing but pure static across the band. So I had to paint in silence until Indiana's return. It was nerve-racking. But when she came back, she brought with her two CDs, and this explanation: "You know what? The music store was closed: the man who works there was out to lunch. Can you believe that? Good thing we are moving to London. But: I went to the consignment shop, and they have a lot of old CDs there. So I found you two CDs that are not opera, but very close. This one is by the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, and they are playing 'National Anthems of the World,' and this one is by nobody I know, but it's called 'Soap Opera's Favorite Wedding Music.' So there you go."

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 32, Femme Fatale, Paragraph 49

ANDY: I have no idea. But I don't want to test myself. Besides, as long as the ground is underneath our feet, we still have a chance to escape.

OLYMP: Is the center of the Earth...

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 6, The Sixth Day, Part 1, Children & Education Reform, Section 2, Discussing Heaven with a Child, Paragraphs 42-43

Among these photographs, there were a lot of small decorative objects: homemade objets d'art - like: cotton-ball snowmen with carefully glued faces. There was pottery with fingerprints. There were men made out of alphabet blocks, with felt strips for legs and arms and big felt hats on top of wooden spherical heads. Their faces were simply painted; they had bells for hands and feet. I picked one up and it jingled for me. I really liked it. I smiled. It had the letter 'M' on its belly. I put it back on the shelf, next to the letter 'I' man and the letter 'K,' both of whom were sitting in the shade of a tall communion candle. "These must be Olympia's," I thought, as I carefully closed the glass door.

Usage of Feet in Sorry Ms. Jackson

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: Bigger than your husband.

LESBIAN: Or so I'm told. I didn't actually see them. What I saw was smaller: about six or seven feet. They had these big beaks and enormous eyes made from concentric circles: each circle colored differently from the next. They looked like crazed chickens dancing around like that. Of course, with masks so big, the focus turns to a dancer's legs, the swaying of his hips-

MS. JACKSON: And everything in between.

ALICE: Ms. Jackson!

LESBIAN: His arms are busy holding up the mask.

MS. JACKSON: I'm not surprised: making women do the work.

LESBIAN: I wonder if any Polynesians use a big mask. Would your cook know?

MS. JACKSON: Probably not. Where is my cook? Does she know the kitchen still needs cleaning?

FLETCHER: Why are you looking at me?

– ACT I, lines 424-432

LESBIAN: I was in Goroka - in the highlands of New Guinea - in September, I believe - for the cultural show. There I saw the Mudmen.

MS. JACKSON: Who are the Mudmen?

LESBIAN: The Mudmen make these clay masks - some big, some small -all of them hideously grotesque with giant noses and sharp, pointy teeth.

MS. JACKSON: They dance around with these masks?

LESBIAN: With mud caked over their entire bodies: from neck to toe.

ALICE: Are they naked?

LESBIAN: Of course not: they're wearing masks. In Rabaul - on the island of New Britain - I saw the famous Baining fire dance. There they wear masks that are made from bamboo, which they cover with tapa, a kind of bark cloth. That makes these masks very light. Naturally, they're even bigger.

MS. JACKSON: How big?

LESBIAN: Humongous: thirty to forty feet.

ALICE: No way!

– ACT I, lines 414-423

AT RISE: KOKOMO is wiping up the floor.

KOKOMO: Clean. Clean. Clean. We are obsessed by cleaning. If space is a giant vacuum, why does all the dust settle here: underneath the table? Why not in the middle of the floor? Where I can see it? Where I can wipe it up with my feet? We know perfectly well why, don't we, Kokomo? Master Fletcher can't be bothered to take off his shoes. Thanks to him, it's: 'wipe the floor, Kokomo.' Yes, Ms. Jackson. 'Clean the kitchen, girl.' Yes, Ms. Jackson. 'When is lunch, dear?' I don't know, Ms. Jackson. Honestly, where does all this dust come from? What am I supposed to do with it? There really is no sense in cleaning more than once a month. Let the moon show when it's time to clean. Ms. Jackson certainly doesn't know. She would have me clean my way right into an early grave. Kokomo was not built for dust. She was built for love.

MS. JACKSON: (off) Kokomo!

KOKOMO: Yes, Ms. Jackson.

– ACT I, lines 1-3

(KOKOMO exits in a rush.)

FLETCHER: Go.

ALICE: Should I tell her you love her?

FLETCHER: Tell her you have small feet.

ALICE: Have I small feet?

FLETCHER: Never mind. Tell her the truth.

ALICE: We were only rehearsing.

FLETCHER: It was all for the sake of art.

ALICE: I'll show her the script.

FLETCHER: Are you mad? She'll see all the other kisses.

– ACT II, lines 220-228

(MS. JACKSON exits.)

FLETCHER: What happened?

KOKOMO: He was just standing around.

FLETCHER: Where?

KOKOMO: Mostly in the kitchen.

FLETCHER: (looking down) I see.

KOKOMO: What?

FLETCHER: Nothing. I was just admiring your feet.

KOKOMO: They're dirty.

FLETCHER: They're not.

– ACT I, lines 22-30

Usage of Feet in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Proctor nodded. He said, "The first guy was seated in an alley. Black feet. Did we confirm heroin?"

"We did," said Bob.

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a dead man put in a weird position

"Look at this," said Bob, starting to giggle. He pointed at the ground. "Look at the outline I had to make." There were two small oblong circles of chalk. "It's an outline of his feet." Bob could no longer contain his laughter. Even Proctor had to chuckle a bit. It was funny.

"So what do we think?" asked the captain. "Some kind of artist nut-job. Killing his figure models?"

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring more than one dead body put in a weird position

A gruff voice asked, "Can I help you?" There was a moment of silence.

Orbitz spoke. "I'm here for it," he said. More silence. The shuffling of feet.

The gruff voice asked, "What?"

"You're the shopkeeper, aren't you," said Orbitz. "I hear you have an assistant."

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written out of respect for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

I straightened out the dress. I felt filthy. I kicked my sweater onto the love seat.

"Would you like me to help you?" asked my earnest guest. My crumpled panties were at his feet.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may calm one's sense of anxiety depending on your outlook

The detective circled around the body. He couldn't see a wound. Just the redness on the face. "How is it still standing," he whispered to himself. His partner poked the cadaver. It rocked a few inches back and forth. "Enough of that, Bob," said the captain. "Proctor's seen it. Get that body on the gurney."

"Wait a minute," said Proctor. "There's no lividity in the feet. If this person was upside-down there should be more than just a red face."

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a policeman's wife put in a weird position

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
