Fingers, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is deliberating on the potential of enhancing his mammoth Fiction Corpus with a book about the fine arts; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the potential of administering English as a global lingua franca. I do reject the demoralizing blueprint with which English is taught.Pointer

Upgrading one's skills with a language isn't like making a warmer piece of cloth. A language - a spoken language - isn't merely a tool that you can teach yourself to employ with greater amounts of precision. A living language can't be ripped from the competing values of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make people recite English is to strip them of its cultural context. A proper instructor has to prepare a plan for introducing it; the perceptive pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a set of written language of varying size and consistency. A corpus could contain anything from a book about literature to a few success stories. I suffered many a sleepless night developing my "paltry" Fiction Corpus to form a precise type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have constructed a million words and I have reduced them, reframing them - not simply to teach English vocabulary but to promote the human soul, and to provoke that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Lots of people go on road trips. Not everybody criss-crosses Europe in 46 days. Especially not with a complete stranger.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

Though I was born in Europe, I had been brought up from a young age in America, living in states as diverse as Nebraska, Ohio and Connecticut. I was taught American values and saw reality from an American perspective. She was born and raised in a village in Poland. She went to work in the nearest town. The nearest city seemed like the center of the world. The American perspective was not something she was ever planning to see.

Margo and I spent over 40 days on the road. We started out as basically strangers, but in those 40 days we started listening to each other. We started teaching ourselves how to cooperate. Our journey across Europe may have ended, but our journey towards each other continues. No amount of fear, anger, sadness, disgust or anticipation can stop hope. Slowly but surely, we're learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Fingers

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word fingers in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word fingers, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word fingers is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Fingers in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"The Lonely Planet," I said, "was a ghost wolf, with big, black eyes, a black nose, and blackness inside his ears. The rest of him was white and gray - except for his paws: those were black too - and inside his mouth, when he opened it, which wasn't very often, you could see his black tongue. Those were the parts that really existed: they were black because they were real - the rest of his body was like fog: if you tried to touch it, your hand would disappear inside - but, if you touched his nose, you would feel it, cold and wet on your fingertip. If you poked his eyes, you would feel the black jelly pushing your fingers back. If you stuck your finger inside his ear, you could stroke it; but the outside was like mist: if you tried to touch it, you would blow it away. Sometimes, when the wind blew really hard, you could see it blowing away his body."

Verse 157 from the chapter called Childhood

"Hard to tell," said Stalin. "Panzer-Tank came in there pretty peeved, but Leonard was the first one to start pointing fingers."

"When did that happen?"

Verses 841-842 from the chapter called Security

For reasons unknown to him, your father was never called. Sapper was called, then rejected by the Medical Board. He was 'Category D,' thanks to his various illnesses and poor constitution. Your father was never even before the medical board. He slipped right through the Draft Commission's greedy little fingers. It wasn't until he was planning to leave for Mars that Jesus found out why.

Verse 495 from the chapter called Adolescence

"Swear it," said Stalin. Holding up the first two fingers of his right hand, he said, "I, Roman Stalin, swear to follow Jesus's command."

Verse 311 from the chapter called Arms

Holding up their first two fingers, the men swore it.

Usage of Fingers in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

But, preparing too much, I hoped in vain: the fruits of previous efforts were rotting, but, by the power of love's plain feeling, my efforts were miraculously buoyed: my fingering was insane! my accents lingering, my tempo almost perfect. And, leaving my fingers to do their work, my mind was free to wander, my eyes were free to wonder, and my loins were free to want her: and, looking over my sheets, I saw her back in the kitchen. I saw her front in the kitchen - I saw her legs and her sides and her invisible wings in the kitchen.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 2, Prayer & The Reformation, Section 11, Judging Love Based on Results, Paragraph 5

And so I came, not for love, but to prove love wrong, and, preparing my sheets, I brought both songs of joy and songs of madness, hoping that my own feeling would filter from within, escape my fingers, and leave my brain preoccupied.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 2, Prayer & The Reformation, Section 11, Judging Love Based on Results, Paragraph 4

End this agitato. End this agitato. End this crescendo, diminuendo, crescendo poco a poco reaching the heights of human ecstasy, flittering our fingers, curling our toes and floating, floating down, too heavy to fly, shattering, and falling like rain in a million pieces down, to the ground, away from God's majesty - dashing madly across the keys my fingers flying ran the crescendo up in haste: no love to feel, no love to seize, my heart dying of disease - no time to waste - headlong falling into a pool and treading water, trying to swim, trying to leave but something pulling, pulling down, I forced my way up and out, climbing but slipping, falling, and then regaining myself and then stopping now...ritenuto...oh ritenuto: give me God's mercy: give me God's mercy: give me a moment now, end me my heartache now, end me my heart...now.

Sing away my fears, put aside my tears - please, the Lord and I need to rest a while. O lullaby, bring a dream to me, let me see a dream, and regarding dreams, let me guard my dreams, let me live my dreams, let me, lullaby, dream - oh, what a beautiful melody fills my heart and wraps around me. How in love I was that night! How furious were my body, mind and soul arguing with each other. But, for a moment, playing this trio, life was quiet. My heart was tranquilized. My thoughts were suspended, my soul bathing in joy. And my eyes were drinking it. They came a long way to find themselves a watering hole, and finally, the time was right - no enemies nearby, no traps to catch me - everything was peaceful. And that was no surprise: for who should be standing guard? Indiana was! and may she continue in my dreams: for she was standing in front of me like a figure from the grandest of my dreams, like she were surrounded by fog, and only her own body could escape its grayness. She stood there in the doorway like grace itself, the light from the kitchen granting her man's electrical mandorla.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Luka reached inside. There was nothing. He pushed his fingers as deeply as they would go. They made a squelching sound. He pulled them out. They were wet. He brought them carefully to his nose. He sniffed them. It smelled good.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring a useless twit of a drug-user

Patsy unfastened his pants. Ever so carefully, he wiggled them down. Next came his shorts. As much as they would burn, his cheeks had to provide traction. With the smell of burning flesh already seeming to fill his nostrils, Patsy clutched either side of his collar and gently inched back his fingers. Supporting more of his weight on the fabric was dangerous but unavoidable. He could only hope he reached the loop in time.

– from “A Cop Named Patsy,” a funny story featuring international cooperation

At the bus station, Shephard was forced to part ways with his new friend. He watched her walk into the gentle Kashgar afternoon, hips swinging in her light, flower-print skirt-in Shephard's mind-to the doleful tune of Korobushka, playing slowly at first in his head, quickening pace with each progressively tantalizing step, until the remains of his hope were crushed. "Game over," he thought to himself. He turned to Clark. He cried. "How could you? You let her slip through our fingers."

Bo licked her fingers. She gazed into Tae's eyes. She whispered, "Thank you."

– from “How Tae & Bo Took Over the World and Kung & Fu Didn't,” an apocryphal bible story featuring a criminal settlement

Tatum thought of her ex-wife. She thought of all the women she had bedded since becoming successful. The Moon was supposed to be full of eager, same-sexed girls. That's what the Lunar Ladylover's brochure had said.

Tatum rested her fingers on the woman's hand. "Listen. I need to spruce up my wardrobe. I can't expect to get anywhere like this. Would you be willing to help? You seem to know what you're doing."

Usage of Fingers in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

The Amazon called his team. One half was still following Orbitz on the cruise ship. The other half was in front of the shop. He ordered them into the neon building. They walked up to the second floor. The team leader paused. He could hear something in the room ahead. It sounded like a man rapping his fingers on a desk. He pushed open the door. There was no desk. There was no man. There was clutter everywhere. Strange objects of art and furniture stacked on top of each other loomed from every corner. The rapping continued. It was slower now. It was more cautious. The men squeezed into the room. All of them were transfixed by the sound. It was coming from behind a low curtain. The curtain was draped over what seemed like a crate. Or a cage. The men crowded in front of it. The leader reached out his hand. He grabbed a corner of the curtain. He lifted it.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written out of respect for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

She wrapped her arms around my shoulders. Our foreheads touched. I put my hands on her bare knees. I rubbed her thighs. With each stroke, I circled wider. I went a little slower. I ventured deeper up her leg. I wondered when she would stop me. She didn't. My fingers brushed the edge of her panties. I drew back. I left my hands around her knees.

Indiana lifted her head. I looked up. She was staring into my eyes. She pecked me quickly on the lips. I had no time to pucker. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "I've ruined your party."

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that might calm one's nerves depending on your outlook

To ensure the veracity of Captain Orbitz's responses the Amazon enlisted the telepathic services of five of the most well-respected Astrazeneca in the Orion Arm. They did not come cheap. Shielded behind glass in five separate compartments they listened intently to Orbitz's thoughts. When Orbitz was asked directly if he was an exian, he said no. The megacepahlics buried their fingers into their huge pulsing temples. They concentrated and said almost in unison, "This is truth."

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance written in honor of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

A farmer lies dying. My comrade and I watch his face twist. His fingers curl. His body as it takes its final breath tenses in a wretched pose. It holds it. For a moment the world lies still. Everything stops. Slowly, inexorably, fate is sealed. The meat flattens. Breath is expunged. I notice something in it. A spirit, like us, has emerged into the air. It sees us. It asks us what we're doing. "This man is spent," it says. "Go find another." It turns to leave. I cry for it to wait.

– from “Shovels Fall,” an interesting story about the cycle of social upheaval throughout history

Indiana lay her head on the crook of my neck. I slid my fingers beneath her underwear. I lifted her onto my hands. I held her by the skin of her bottom. I rocked her. I kept pace with her lilting chest. Our shoulders rose and fell. We were like a mother and child.

She told me Albert was sick. He was going to die. I cooed. I kissed her on the cheek. I told her I would put her to bed.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may ease one's sense of distaste depending on your outlook
