Forehead, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal refuses to weigh the prospect of supplementing his considerable Fiction Corpus with a fable about cheap canvas art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I believe in the possibility of harnessing English as a global standard. I don't regard highly the unspectacular system by which English is taught.Pointer

Beefing up a person's mastery of a language isn't like pioneering a more valuable coin. A language is not merely a tool that you can learn to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A language cannot be unyoked from the philosophical currents of a clan of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching students to recite English is to rob them of its cultural context. A good teacher must develop a strategy for introducing it; the bravest student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language based on a specific corpus, a set of written works of various scope and consistency. They might include anything from a book about literature to some really contemporary realistic fiction. I developed my "hefty" Fiction Corpus to form a special sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have prepared a million words and I have categorized them, reframing them - not merely to teach an American tongue but to promote the human spirit, and to pressure that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

Though I was born in Europe, I had been brought up from a young age in America, living in states as diverse as Nebraska, Ohio and Connecticut. I was taught American values and saw reality from an American perspective. She was born and raised in a village in Poland. She went to work in the nearest town. The nearest city seemed like the center of the world. The American perspective was not something she was ever planning to see.

6,000 miles. One car. One tent. We started learning how to listen. We started learning how to open up. We started cooperating. Even when we were angry, even when it was so difficult that it didn't seem like it would turn out well, we stuck it out. We completed the trip and we came back happy. We had beaten the devil on the road. Back home more devils were waiting to abuse us. More anger. More fear. More sadness. This time we were prepared. This time we had each other and we could harken back to the joy and the trust and the suprise that 6,000 miles had created. We could remember what it was like to live in one tent.

THE DISAPPEARING WOMAN, THE DISAPPEARING MAN...Pointer

a collection of modern art prints and posters

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Forehead

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word forehead in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word forehead, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word forehead is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Forehead in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

She was there and radiant. She was in Group Fifteen, holding onto the thick, gray-colored electromechanical transducer wire that stretched from the priest in front to the loudspeaker being carried behind. She was supposed to be in Group Twenty-five - silly girl: what a silly girl she was! What a huge forehead - and no chin! What a beautiful silly girl: those Japanese eyes! those huge lips! that short, straight, and yet, upturned nose. That mouth of hers was hanging open. How funny it was that she couldn't close her mouth! How absurd - and yet, so valuable! So endearing! and yet, so trivial. It made her look almost innocent. Like the guilty fool, she was difficult to judge. Was she beautiful or not? Was she beautiful when she smiled? Yes, she was beautiful. Was that huge mouth of hers beautiful? Yes, it was beautiful. Was she beautiful when she puckered her tiny, little chin by crooking her humongous jaw? Well, kind of: her little chin was beautiful (it complemented, among other things, her huge forehead) but sometimes she made her chin look sort of strange, as if she were trying to make herself look ugly or else to communicate something - perhaps, befuddlement. It was very unclear - unlike her eyes, which communicated things with unabashed honesty - like curiosity, for example - or, more appropriately, the beginnings of rapture, which, in this case, made themselves evident in the wideness of her eyes, in their feigned concentration on the dirt road underneath her feet, and, especially, in the way they pushed her black pupils and brown irides into the beautiful almond-shaped corners of her lids, following that mysterious image, that masked rider, your father, dressed in black body armor, who kept watching her pass him along the side of the road as he stood waiting in the fallow field, galloping forward every time she turned back her head.

Verse 266 from the chapter called Security

"Look at me," she whined. "I'm the most misproportioned woman on the planet. I've got huge Martian feet; short, stubby Japanese legs; a gigantic forehead; no chin."

Verse 794 from the chapter called Security

"You don't have a huge, shiny forehead."

"Your forehead's not shiny!"

Verses 851-852 from the chapter called Bohemia

Forgive me, child, when I say that I found her, at first, only somewhat attractive. Her forehead was huge; her chin, nonexistent. Only later did I fully realize how well the two complemented each other - it required a sophisticated taste, one which I did not yet possess - but, nevertheless, even the most sophisticated taste would have required some sort of refinement to accept her beauty for what it was: complex and unrepentant. Unearthly was the best word. She was half-Japanese and half-Martian, which made her broad and narrow at the same time. It gave her a short and straight and yet upturned nose that anywhere else would've been ugly, but which on her was essential to the whole. It was a package of such unexpected brilliance that the parts were too bold to allow for quick and easy appreciation of the angelic splendor that shone from within and without. She was light. She was truly an angel. Hers was the most serene and gentle complexion I would ever come to value, and, at first, it struck me as rather odd. It was square and round, flat and curved, with almond-shaped eyes whose lids folded around her eyeballs - they were beautiful eyes. I came to love them with all my heart. What a strange and complex face your mother had.

Verse 442 from the chapter called Bohemia

"I look nothing like her," said Zoe. "She's got the smallest forehead I've ever seen." Jesus laughed.

Verse 819 from the chapter called Security

Usage of Forehead in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

How noble! until, of course, Indiana throws something very heavy at Albert's head, causing him to duck, which causes the object to crash through the window, causing Albert to turn around, look at the broken window and curse, turning back on his beautiful wife just in time for a bottle to catch him in the forehead, causing him to curse even louder, and, if this were not enough to make your valiant effort hopeless, poor Albert, threatened with further assault, is forced into the music room where he must beg you, Andrea, to defend him against his crazy wife, which you do, successfully, causing Indiana to run upstairs and leaving you with the option of doing nothing at all, or, offering your apartment to Albert, which you do, successfully.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 3, A Man's Charm, Paragraph 3, Clauses 2-3

My stomach was something more than empty; I was ten times hungrier than I had been, but now I could not eat. I sat there staring at my food; Macy asked me what was wrong. I said nothing. He returned to his food, but, before taking his first bite, he said: "I suppose this is what it's like." I shot him a glance but then I dropped; I sighed heavily and brought my hand to my forehead.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 13, Bringing Up a Delicate Subject, Paragraph 8, Clauses 1-5

Nike's demeanor was even stranger: he was something between mad and determined. His forehead was leading his body as if his brow had suddenly become twice as heavy. Looking out from underneath it, he would glance to his left side - but never to his right. Then, he would lift back his head, as if he were balancing the weight of his brow on his neck, and, in order to see, he would have to look down his nose - maybe for a change, or maybe to relieve the tension - but still, he would glance only to his left - perhaps because that side was closer to him, or perhaps he was avoiding me - but it's not like he knew I was there; besides, what am I talking about? This was a dream.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 2, Understanding Physical Desire, Paragraph 1

That way, when the time was right, I was able to bring up the fact that when I was in the third grade, I had accidentally stabbed myself in the forehead with a pencil, and that this had left a permanent deposit of graphite in my forehead. I told Luca that she could easily find it, but she said she couldn't see it because she didn't have her glasses on. So she put them on, and with those gigantic monstrosities over her eyes, she began studying my forehead. And she kept looking and looking, because the truth was that in third grade I had stabbed my cousin with the pencil, and it was his forehead carrying the graphite. And how mad he was when he found out: because Luca no longer believed either of us, and she absolutely refused my cousin to look at his forehead. And that victory was the occasion for this photograph. I was gloating so badly I had no trouble parting with the money. And these little postcards were very expensive back then. I sent this one to my relatives in Romania; they were neighbors with Indiana's family - and you know what? She stole this from their house when she was eight years old - kept it locked in a box under her bed. Isn't that just incredible? I still don't believe it. And do you know why I keep these two photographs together? Because this isn't just a picture of a poodle: this is actually a portrait of Indiana. Do you see the resemblance?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 8, Financial Instruments, Paragraph 18, Clauses 17-28

When the moment came, it came with quiet and succoring splendor. Nike was holding a long pike by the side of the road. He was leaning against it, taking a moment's respite while his teammates prepared something. He was wiping away the sweat from his forehead. Then, she walked by: she walked by right in front of him on the sidewalk.

In the airy shadows hovered a beauty unlike any he had ever seen. It was stunning.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
