Legs, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is kicking around the viability of enhancing his heroic Fiction Corpus with a story about buying modern art prints; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I have faith in the idea of promulgating English as a worldwide language. I don't regard highly the altogether plodding game plan by which English is taught.Pointer

Fine-tuning a person's adroitness with a language isn't like producing a more incorruptible banknote. A language - a spoken language - is not just a tool that you can teach yourself to use with a greater amount of precision. A shared language can not be bisected from the competing values of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to deprive her of its cultural context. A capable teacher has to prepare a plan for introducing it; the perceptive student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe words based on a specific corpus, a set of written works of varying size and consistency. A corpus might contain anything from a biography of nobel award winners to a copious amount of the best fiction books yet. I burnt many candles forging my "monumental" Fiction Corpus to form a specific genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have fashioned a million words and I have cut them down, reformulating them - not just to teach American vocabulary but to reveal the human soul, and to pressure that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

Lots of people go on road trips. Not everybody criss-crosses Europe in 46 days. Especially not with a complete stranger.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

Though I was born in Europe, I had been brought up from a young age in America, living in states as diverse as Nebraska, Ohio and Connecticut. I was taught American values and saw reality from an American perspective. She was born and raised in a village in Poland. She went to work in the nearest town. The nearest city seemed like the center of the world. The American perspective was not something she was ever planning to see.

6,000 miles. One car. One tent. We started learning how to listen. We started learning how to open up. We started cooperating. Even when we were angry, even when it was so difficult that it didn't seem like it would turn out well, we stuck it out. We completed the trip and we came back happy. We had beaten the devil on the road. Back home more devils were waiting to abuse us. More anger. More fear. More sadness. This time we were prepared. This time we had each other and we could harken back to the joy and the trust and the suprise that 6,000 miles had created. We could remember what it was like to live in one tent.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Legs

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word legs in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word legs, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word legs is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Legs in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Following the map was unnecessary: there was no doubt as to my destination. The only thing that worried me was what the gun was going to do once I got there. I took my time. Through the streets and alleyways of Wroclaw, my legs carried my body forward. I walked intoxicated by the atmosphere of dread, pain, fear, and corruption. I was killing myself slowly with each step, preparing myself for what lay ahead: what I thought would meet me around the corner. Not death: I was ready for that. For the first time in my life, I considered myself a man. What kind of man? I asked. Poor and destitute? Rich in what? Abandonment? Dejection? Sure. Vengeful feelings? No: those were still building. The truth was: I was very confused. My destiny lay before me like a brick wall.

Verse 835 from the chapter called Adolescence

Meanwhile, the investigation into Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's death was gaining massive media coverage. The videotapes were sensational. They showed Zoe Guderian going out onto the balcony. They showed a security guard being thrown a gun. They showed a man walking up the stairs to the third floor and then entering Zoe Guderian's room. They showed another man suddenly appearing from the balcony. They showed the man who entered Zoe Guderian's room suddenly appearing from the corner of Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's office and threatening him with a gun. They showed the man from the balcony taking down a mirror and opening the door. They showed a man's legs reflected in the mirror - not his face. "Thank God," said Jesus. They showed the man whose reflection was just in the mirror lowering his weapon while Leonard Cohen-Krupnik removed one from his drawer. They showed Leonard Cohen-Krupnik raising his gun and shooting it before being shot. Then it showed the two men disappearing from the balcony. How bizarre!

Verse 3 from the chapter called Vows

"What about his claws?"

"They were mist."

"Could they hurt you?"

"No: they would dissipate. But don't forget: his paws were real. They could hit you in the face - and the Lonely Planet must've been strong: he was the fastest thing on four legs - or, four paws, as the case was. He was so fast, he could outrun his own body - swear to God: if you were lucky enough to see him running by, you would see his tail was bigger by about six or seven feet: he would look hungry, 'cause he was thin - but that was just his body trying to catch up, like a comet - that's what people said his name was, before he died."

"Comet?"

"That's right. Sometimes, he ran so fast, he lost the whole thing: he would look at his paws and realize his whole body was gone. That's when he'd have to turn around and find it. In fact, if you ever went to the woods and came across a low, thin cloud of mist, you had to wonder: was this left by the Lonely Planet? 'Cause if so, you had plenty to worry about: without his body, the Lonely Planet was almost invisible. The same was true in the morning fog: he blended in. That's when he struck."

Verses 160-165 from the chapter called Childhood

Jesus turned. Holding his urinating dick to the side, he shuffled as fast as he could to where Sapper was seated. By the time his victim leaped up and ran, Jesus had successfully peed on his pant legs. "Fuck off," he yelled, laughing. Zoe was laughing too.

Verse 727 from the chapter called Security

"Look at me," she whined. "I'm the most misproportioned woman on the planet. I've got huge Martian feet; short, stubby Japanese legs; a gigantic forehead; no chin."

Verse 794 from the chapter called Security

Usage of Legs in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

But, preparing too much, I hoped in vain: the fruits of previous efforts were rotting, but, by the power of love's plain feeling, my efforts were miraculously buoyed: my fingering was insane! my accents lingering, my tempo almost perfect. And, leaving my fingers to do their work, my mind was free to wander, my eyes were free to wonder, and my loins were free to want her: and, looking over my sheets, I saw her back in the kitchen. I saw her front in the kitchen - I saw her legs and her sides and her invisible wings in the kitchen.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 2, Prayer & The Reformation, Section 11, Judging Love Based on Results, Paragraph 5

I threw myself at her knees. "Oh, beloved," I said. "We only seem to live in vanity; but I have hope for us; and I have faith, and love..." I was stroking her thighs. She opened up her legs and let me in. On my knees, I pressed myself against her bosom. I unbuttoned her blouse. She removed my shirt. We became even more amorous.

On a blanket of clothing, I laid her down.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 7, The Seventh Day, Part 1, Strength & Security Sector Reform, Section 1, Spending the Night with a Lover, Paragraphs 8-9

My knees began shaking, and before it was too obvious, I got up and realized how weak my legs were. Walking as steadily as I could to the kitchen, I found it mercifully deserted. After pacing for a brief moment, I decided to take a shot of liquor, but my whole body was shaking: my legs were shaking, my shoulders, my arms were shaking and my hands were shaking. I leaned against the counter and my hands were calm, then my arms were calm even though my shoulders continued to shake. I tried to stand upright, but my breast began to shudder, and my breath was shuddering too. And then my whole body shuddered - mercifully so, because after that I was relatively in control, and could only complain of a little trembling.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 9, Attacking homosexuality, Paragraph 2, Clauses 10-16

My face remained quiet, seemingly attentive, but meanwhile, a turbulent feeling was rising within me. It began with the coldness of my feet, and a little shiver that sent its heralding vibration up my legs and which I stopped at my knees.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 14, Feelings, Paragraph 1, Clauses 6-8

Those legs were like two little piglets - what am I saying? They were like two gigantic piglets. And she was naked: she was naked reclining on top of pillows - a whole mound of pillows being crushed by that enormous weight. How could she walk? She had to be carried around on a gigantic litter. She was so heavy, her four porters were not standing: they were crawling: on their knees and elbows. There was a white one, a black one, a brown one, and a yellow one - a man for each corner crawling on his knees and elbows, hoping his back wouldn't break.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 15, The Rule of Fantasy Among Men, Paragraph 1, Clauses 11-16

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

A few minutes after sunrise, Carmina noticed a barchetta in the distance. Ferrari was relieved. He couldn't feel his legs anymore. When the fisherman came alongside, Ferrari knocked him overboard. Putting Carmina into the small boat, he started rowing east. "With the wind at our back," he said, "we can make it all the way to Albania."

Carmina cried, "Are you mad? Durazzo has fallen to the Turks."

– from “Italy Sucks and Has Sucked For A Long Time,” an adventure story featuring one too many nobles

The woman cried, "I will." She picked up the weapons. She added, "As soon as I have stood on the bridge and peered into the underworld." She faced Gog with her legs astride. "For now, I am a warrior. We have a land to conquer."

Gog was impressed by this audacity. He accepted the woman as his consort. The people recognized her as Magog, living embodiment of the light of Mithra.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a man who thinks he can meet the gods

The secretary approached the file cabinet in front of the woman. She used the heel of her shoe to open the bottom drawer. Like a child who sees change upon the counter, she hesitated. She would have to be quick. She put her heel on the floor. She leaned forward. She barely bent her legs.

The corduroy fabric bulged around her-it was right in front of the woman's face. A short ruffle was all that stood in the way of buried treasure.

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring the dark side

All Juanita had to do was flex her neck. The collar gave way, sending her body down the slick surface of the table-top. Interestingly, through the aid of her hands, which at least seemed to be vainly trying to slow her progress, the ranger's bum ended up on the edge of the table, her legs to either side, and her skirt decidedly bunched around her waist.

– from “A Cop Named Patsy,” a funny story featuring good police-work

The passenger turned. I recognized him. It was my friend, Nike. He stared at me with wide eyes. It was a challenge. I sank into my seat. The eyes stayed fixed above, as if I had only been blocking their view. The driver turned. It was the man Nike introduced to me as Luka, the Romanian who married his cousin. They stared for a moment. Together, they faced forward.

"Last time I was here," said Nike, "the road was empty. The Reine was on her last legs."

FLETCHER: Bigger than your husband.

LESBIAN: Or so I'm told. I didn't actually see them. What I saw was smaller: about six or seven feet. They had these big beaks and enormous eyes made from concentric circles: each circle colored differently from the next. They looked like crazed chickens dancing around like that. Of course, with masks so big, the focus turns to a dancer's legs, the swaying of his hips-

MS. JACKSON: And everything in between.

ALICE: Ms. Jackson!

LESBIAN: His arms are busy holding up the mask.

MS. JACKSON: I'm not surprised: making women do the work.

LESBIAN: I wonder if any Polynesians use a big mask. Would your cook know?

MS. JACKSON: Probably not. Where is my cook? Does she know the kitchen still needs cleaning?

FLETCHER: Why are you looking at me?

Usage of Legs in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Inside the cage stood a pretty little girl with the legs of a giant spider. From behind those legs a hairy abdomen suddenly poked down. It spewed a thin secretion across the faces of the men. They cried out and dropped to the floor. They started writhing in pain. Their movements jerked more and more until their limbs finally locked in a rigid posture. They heard helplessly the sound of a man calmly climbing up the stairs. It was Orbitz. The men recognized him. Unable to express their shock their eyes blazed with confusion and fury. Orbitz knelt among them. "I'm sorry," he said. "The creature poisoned you with a paralytic. At this dosage it's fatal. I didn't want any of you to die. It wasn't up to me. She didn't want to take any chances with her freedom. I wish I could stay with you until the end. Unfortuately the creature has a short refractory period. I have to surgically remove her gland before she's capable of killing me."

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance in the tradition of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

She squeezed me. She pressed her face into my shoulder. She made a grunting sound. She whispered, "I have to go home." I watched her withdraw her legs from around me. I watched her fix her skirt. She wiped her eyes. I went to find a handkerchief. I wondered what happened. I told myself to stop. It wasn't important.

I found a square of silk. I moistened it. I gave it to Indiana. She wiped her face. She apologized.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may ease one's sense of anxiety depending on your outlook

"This is about the girl, isn't it," said Orbitz Número Dos. "I really do love her." Orbitz Nombre Trois said nothing. Orbitz Número Dos picked up the dead legs. They started moving the body towards the airlock. "Did I talk?" asked Orbitz Número Dos. "Before I died?"

Orbitz Nombre Trois stopped. He gave himself a cold hard look. He said, "I'd like to tell myself exactly what my last words will be. Except I would only scoff." He started to move again.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance inspired by Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

Orbitz Number One left. Orbitz Número Dos took a long look at Orbitz Nombre Trois. "The radiation on that swab," he said. "It matches the molecular composition of the ship's engine. I'm the saboteur. The creature called me on the intercom right before the engine blew. She wanted to know why I locked her in the gallery. Except I didn't remember doing it."

Orbitz Nombre Trois gave Orbitz Número Dos a short glance. He looked back at the body. "You take the legs," he said. "I'll take the arms. We need to get him to port side airlock."

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance in the tradition of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

Orbitz pulled up the hood of his skin-suit. Destiny lay aboard the Nautilus. Orbitz sputtered his way towards the stern of the ship. By the time he got to the airlock he could see the flashing red lights of an intruder alert. Marriott had done her job. Orbitz boarded the ship. He looked at the clock. There wasn't much time left before his bomb would explode. He headed carefully towards the gallery. He wasn't sure how this was going to happen. When he got to the hatch he saw Heather Mills. All eight of her legs were stretching to their limit. She was craning her head over the edge of the window, straining to see the Argo. She lifted herself a little higher with the hand bar. She dropped her doll. It didn't matter. She was fascinated by the ship's slow spinning descent. It was already transitting the planet. "That's why she doesn't see me," thought Orbitz. "She's distracted by the view. She knows there's an intruder but she's acting like nothing's wrong." Orbitz wondered for a moment if he had told himself too much. If Heather Mills might know what was happening. He tried to remember what he had told himself so many years ago. He smiled. He had mentioned the sauna. He had tried in vain to change his past. He had said go to the sauna. It was the one piece of the ship that went back in time. Heather Mills had read his mind on the bridge. That's why she was here. She had come to be next to the sauna. It was on the other side of the hall. Like a child she had been distracted. Orbitz realized his entire destiny pivoted on the childishness of this pathetic little girl. It made him give the lightest of chortles. Heather Mills jerked her head. She saw Orbitz's reflection in the dark part of the glass. Before she could turn around he had shut the hatch. He locked it. He turned and walked into the sauna.
