Lips, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is debating the feasibility of supplementing his vast Fiction Corpus with a collection of science fiction reviews; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the possibility of promulgating English as the world's second language. I don't regard highly the prosaic blueprint with which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Improving a person's proficiency with a language isn't like producing a stronger steel. A language - a spoken tongue - isn't merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A shared language cannot be uncoupled from the competing values of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to strip him of its cultural context. A good instructor has to find a method of introducing it; the perceptive pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language based on a particular corpus, a set of writing of varying scope and consistency. Such a corpus might include everything from a book about literature to a bunch of story books. I labored on my "proud" Fiction Corpus in order to form a distinct class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have sculpted a million words and I have investigated them, reshaping them - not simply to teach American vocabulary but to promote the human soul, and to pressure that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Lots of people go on road trips. Not everybody criss-crosses Europe in 46 days. Especially not with a complete stranger.

I knew naturism was popular in many parts of Europe and as an artist who had worked on body acceptance for his entire career I was keen on documenting some small part of it. Lo and behold, I found a very important part of it hiding in Poland. Her name was Margo.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

Despite the cops in Vienna. Despite the rain in Veržej. Despite getting lost in Italy. Despite parting at Soest. Despite that night in Amsterdam. Despite our fight in Lisieux. Despite the storm in the Bois de la Roche. Despite that terrible morning outside Collonges. Despite the long road to Pielenhofen, we came back safe and sound and most importantly we were happy. We had started to learn how to listen. We had left the devils of the road behind and the devils ahead seemed just a little bit smaller. We had started to open up.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Lips

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word lips in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word lips, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word lips is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Lips in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

But I doubted it. The newspapers had been full of stories about the general defense-budget crisis for the past several months; the crisis was particularly painful in Silesia, where the provincial government, a raggedy assortment of bureaus without a clearly defined leadership, and which, up till then, had taken no part in military affairs, being told by the national government to start covering its 'own' costs (overburdened as Parliament was by federal requirements to the European Union), and being faced with two new hungry swine, the Silesian Air Squadron and the 2nd Infantry Brigade, decided, according to the generous fashion, to delegate one of its newly endowed responsibilities to a local organ of government, and, since the 2nd Infantry had, as its base, a meager five hundred hectares within the city environs of Wroclaw, the thankless job of maintaining military effectiveness for the 2nd Infantry remained in the hands of its commander, a certain General Stefan Lipski, while the terrible onus of paying for it fell squarely onto the shoulders of Edward Handerek, President of Wroclaw, who claimed he didn't have the money for it either.

Verse 17 from the chapter called Arms

Jesus had no idea what he was getting into. When he used his keys to open that back door to his uncle's former place of business, there was no way of knowing exactly what lay in store. Clothes? Possibly. Heroin? Doubtful. Arms? Never to be imagined. But there they were, in brilliant rows of polished black: thirty caliber bolt-action self-loading magazine-fed repeating rifles with twenty-five inch barrels and removable scopes! Eight-round clips all over the place! Twenty-two caliber pistonless gas-operated assault rifles with selective fire! Thirty-round curved box magazines all over the place! Even thirty-five caliber blowback-operated machine carbines with telescoping bolts! Fifty-round clips all over the place! Thirty caliber twenty-one pound light machine guns with retractable bipods! Belts of ammunition everywhere! A fifty fucking caliber air-cooled heavy machine gun mounted on a tripod! Christ Buddha! White phosphorus hand grenades - fragmentation, smoke, incendiary - small-arm grenade rounds, grenade launchers, launcher attachments, mortars, rocket launchers, rockets and bombs.

Verse 12 from the chapter called Arms

For the pirates to abandon their way of life, they would have to change their language. They would have to change the word 'despot' to mean 'Supercapitalist,' 'despot's mistress' to mean 'mid-level manager,' and so on. They would have to trade in their guns and bullets and bombs for water-cooler conversations, wage cuts, and pink slips. That's what they abandoned in the first place; they turned to piracy for lack of apparent options. You have to crush pirates by speaking their own language, using words and ideas and gestures that pierce flesh, tear apart limbs, and decapitate. To the extent that the forces of Good refuse to do this, they fail. Cruelty is the only thing the cruel understand.

Verse 3 from the chapter called Bohemia

She took the half-eaten sandwich in her hands and brought it to her lips. My anticipation made me giggle. She smiled. "Stop it," she said, putting the sandwich down. "I'm not going to do it."

Verse 886 from the chapter called Bohemia

We stared at each other for a long time. Then I got up and ambled over to her side. She removed her mask from her mouth and looked up. Her mouth was open; it was only open a little bit - her lips, a centimeter apart, perhaps - but it seemed like her mouth was hanging open; her lower lip curled out; her lips were thick; in fact, her mouth was so big; her chin, so small; it was very strange; her lower set of teeth were pushed against her lip; one of them was wildly out of place, leaning forward, crazily, like the peasant warrior, but you could barely see it, since it hid underneath that huge lip. Her face was very funny. She looked oblivious, wide-eyed and naïve. It seemed as if she were totally forgetting herself. I laughed. I couldn't help myself: she was so amusing.

Verse 477 from the chapter called Bohemia

Usage of Lips in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

And so we kissed. First, it was a gentle touch: lips curling together and pressing away delicately - leggiero sino fine - altogether too tenuous for both of us, requiring a second kiss: più animato. But that was not enough: we had to kiss one more time: affrettando con brio e moto - not in a wild manner, but with desperation.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 2, Prayer & The Reformation, Section 14, Accounting for the Weightiness of a Kiss, Paragraph 148

I let the music play, and, approaching another glass case, I saw a beautiful portrait photograph. It was Olympia from a few years ago. She was smiling beautifully, thickening her lips, not showing her teeth. "They were probably falling out," I thought to myself. There was a smaller portrait of Fabric, and a picture from her baptism as well. You and I were standing on either side of the font. You were beautiful in the picture; you were smiling at the camera; I was looking at the child in my arms with a stern expression. There were many pictures in this cabinet: family, friends, vacation. There was even a picture of our mother with Indiana, frying a gigantic fish by the lake. There was a triptych of old photographs: a young man in a zipped-up sweater, an old couple walking in the forest, and a young couple on the grass: the woman in a plain dress, the man in uniform.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 6, The Drawing Room, Paragraph 4

As he slowed his car to a stop, he removed a single cigarette from its package (a decision he would later regret) and, placing it between his lips, he exited his vehicle. Nike began smoking and pacing alongside his car. Meanwhile, the gendarmes were taking their time. From within their patrol car, they shot occasional glances at Nike, who began raising his brow. He was getting impatient. "At least the car's clean," he thought, having removed all incriminating evidence while cleaning it that morning. So Nike was unworried, but he was getting even more impatient. He was thinking about that beautiful woman. Who could she have been? he thought. Who could she have been? Then the police approached.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 3, Dealing With Arrest, Paragraph 1

Nike swung back his head. "I gave it..." he said. A nervous Luka leaned in. "I gave it..." he repeated. "You gave it to whom?" said Luka. But again the head collapsed, and Luka had to lift it back. "Nike? Nike! You gave it to whom?" But Nike said, "I gave it..." Opening his mouth to yawn, he did so, inhaling, and then, he loudly sighed. "Oh," he sighed. And then he smacked his lips. "I gave it..." he said. "You gave it to whom?" Luka stared. "I gave it to the prostitute." Luka kept staring. "To the prostitute?" Nike smiled. He cracked his eyes open. "To the nun," he said. "I gave it to the nun."

FLETCHER: There is a house on Norfolk that no longer stands. Its eaves of pine were reduced to ash. Its worthy frame that I helped build collapsed in a huge fury of smoke and fire that I helped start. I watched it burning from the top of Mount Pitt. I was too ashamed to go any closer. I was there in the room the night my father planned that terrible justice with his friends. I heard them goading each other into teaching their fellow man not to cooperate with the Australian government. It was madness I heard from their lips. They were the drunken lips of dogs waiting to pounce. I said nothing. I did nothing to stop them. When the police came, I lied and said I knew nothing. I climbed Mount Pitt out of morbid curiosity to see what I had wrought. That image of the house whose beams I placed - whose trusses I tied - in the distance - engulfed in flames - is seared upon my mind. I did nothing to stop it. Do you know how sorry I am? If I told you that somebody died in that fire, would it be in your power to forgive me?

– ACT II, line 183

(ALICE exits.)

FLETCHER: Lord, these events rush past me and my power to comprehend them. I pray that You slow them down at least so that I can catch my breath and maybe savor this memory of lips touching lips that almost too certainly my lips won't ever touch again - but never mind all that. My mission remains clear to me and I am focused. I hope that, with the help of Your Grace, I can make sure these things come to a nice, safe, happy, altogether acceptable, equitable, and respectable conclusion.

Usage of Lips in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Indiana said, "Come here." Her hand was on my shoulder. I leaned towards her. She kissed me. She pressed her lips into mine. She ground them gently. I didn't do anything.

Indiana broke it off. She moved back a few inches. She stared at me. The indoor light was on. She could see my blank expression.

Indiana brought her hand to my cheek. She kissed me again. I kissed back.

Adam was gay. The intimacy of his relationship with Steve O was sending him the wrong signals. Especially when Steve O was really drunk and wielding his naked balls like a pair of nunchunks. Adam decided to try respectfully to step things up. The results were disastrous. As soon as Steve O realized what Adam's hand was doing and where his lips were, he basically borrowed the strength of ten men to heave him up and out of the room. The friendship suffered.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that isn't trying to win an award, but what you make of it is up to you

Dust penetrated every orifice on my head. My lips were blanketed. My ears filled. The corners of my eyes were invaded. I was about to sneeze again. I held my breath. I hoped the second one would ooze out. No luck. The spasm was violent. I jerked my head forward. I almost hit myself.

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may help overcome one's sense of discomfort depending on your outlook

She wrapped her arms around my shoulders. Our foreheads touched. I put my hands on her bare knees. I rubbed her thighs. With each stroke, I circled wider. I went a little slower. I ventured deeper up her leg. I wondered when she would stop me. She didn't. My fingers brushed the edge of her panties. I drew back. I left my hands around her knees.

Indiana lifted her head. I looked up. She was staring into my eyes. She pecked me quickly on the lips. I had no time to pucker. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "I've ruined your party."
