Blessed, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's studying the practicality of reinforcing his epic Fiction Corpus with some truly brilliant fiction stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't challenge the viability of honoring English as a global standard. I don't trust in the unspectacular plan by which English is taught.Pointer

Fortifying a person's expertise with a language isn't like pioneering a safer match. A language - a spoken tongue - isn't just a tool that you can learn to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A common tongue can not be isolated from the competing values of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to rob her of its cultural context. A good instructor must develop a strategy for introducing it; the wisest student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language based on a particular corpus, a set of written language of varying size and consistency. This corpus could contain everything from a book about fiction books to an entire set of drama plays. I developed my "voluminous" Fiction Corpus in order to form a distinct class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have indexed them, reshaping them - not just to teach American vocabulary but to promote the human spirit, and to prod that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Help Raise Self-Esteem With ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

I considered myself young and able, and being American I often convinced myself I was more than able. She didn't feel quite so young. Having grown up in Poland, what was and is still considered by many to be a poor country, she had the added burden of not only being disadvantaged but having it held against her. The difference became palpable when I realized I couldn't even properly translate into Polish the very American word, "opportunity." A chance? Sure. An occasion? Why not? An opportunity? Not in the book.

Margo and I spent over 40 days on the road. We started out as basically strangers, but in those 40 days we started listening to each other. We started teaching ourselves how to cooperate. Our journey across Europe may have ended, but our journey towards each other continues. No amount of fear, anger, sadness, disgust or anticipation can stop hope. Slowly but surely, we're learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Blessed

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word blessed in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word blessed, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word blessed is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Blessed in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

In the middle of the night, your father uncovered and removed those two blessed bodies from the ground. Jesus's father was a rotting corpse. My sister was falling apart.

Verse 144 from the chapter called Security

In those days, there was a brief craze for communal flagellation. Flagellant processions were commonplace in the town of Treblinka for about five weeks. They began after a certain Jesuit from Italy came to speak at St. Hedwig's. During a strange and mostly tedious homily, which was barely being translated by the pastor, this Jesuit stripped himself naked (down to the waist), threw himself onto the tomb of Henry II (the Bearded), grabbed onto his scourge (which came out from nowhere) and started beating himself. There was silence but for the sounds of his whip. Blood was everywhere. "It was incredible," said the fortunate ones who saw it. "He kept doing it: right through the Eucharist. He didn't stop until every last person was done." After the Mass, people who prostrated themselves in front of the altar were beaten by the Jesuit. They were instructed in the mystic ways of flagellation. Everyone present was welcomed. There was a long, organizational meeting held in the presbytery, and the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament was formed.

Verse 430 from the chapter called Adolescence

In the sacred forest that night, Jesus and Zoe made love on a bed of moss. Unlike the prevailing custom at the time - at least, among the elites - they removed all of their clothes and lay naked. That night, Your brother Michael was conceived. Blessed be that night forever.

Verse 152 from the chapter called Vows

What a miserable State I was in! Full of higher powers, mortars, and opacity! I would've been blessed if I had left it at that, but I was soon to meet Her masters. Right then, at the end of my adolescence, when I turned into my map's last alley, all there was to be seen was Her long rat's tail and Her three pendulous teats hanging from that meager breast. A sign!

Verse 836 from the chapter called Adolescence

When I close my eyes, my mind is spinning: revolving: eating itself. I see a giant pinwheel in space - FUX PINWHEEL. A galaxy! People spinning together; people spinning apart - the center: together; the edge: apart. People spinning away! People spinning together! The nation! A crucible! Fire of life! The blast furnace of war! The slag! Fumes! People in the fumes! People in the bloom! The bloom! Nation! Blessed nation!

Verse 12 from the chapter called Invocation

Usage of Blessed in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Luka blessed God. He slowed down and stopped in front of her. He looked behind him at his two passengers. They were comatose: firmly in the grips of narcosis. Luka had the window unroll. "Would you like a ride?" he asked. But she was silent. He turned on the interior light.

"Do you remember me?" She recognized him.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 23, The Effects of Poverty, Paragraphs 16-17

Unlike the old clients and patrons of ancient Rome, who lived in the days of peaceful Numa's building, and who, by their blessed devotion, by upholding the mutual obligations of clientēla, were participating in building something sacred, we were doing no such thing: we were not part of something sacred.

He was a new patron; we were new clients.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 6, Doing Business, Paragraphs 5-6

But even if that were true - and I suspect it is - luckily for everyone, it doesn't necessarily make Luka a stooge - at least not in the sense that we enjoy when we are in the States and 'blessed' with Luke's company. Let's not beat around the bush: Luke is a total stooge. But if Luka is being somehow manipulated by his cousin-in-law, Nike, and this partnership doesn't prove as equitable as he might expect, it will only prove Luka half a stooge. As long as he's capable of insulting Nike to his face, and of doing it effectively, he'll never be a total stooge.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 5, A Man's Features, Paragraph 1

I was happy to be there - although, I have to say, I was a bit uncomfortable. I am not used to bathing children; and, with Olympia participating, I was made keenly aware of our different bodies. Fabric was a very little girl. Olympia was on the verge of pubescence. And I was a fully grown man. How different we were; how beautiful each was in his and her own way; how much more beautiful each could someday become - and if only such growth could last forever: allowing us to look back on former states of beauty, allowing us to look forward in blessed expectation.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 6, The Sixth Day, Part 1, Children & Education Reform, Section 1, Bathing Young Children, Paragraph 3

Don't tell me you're upset every time your mother asks you when you're going to marry a nice girl, because she has every right to ask you that - regardless of how you identify yourself. My mother has the same right. In fact, she has every right to expect me to say: 'yes, mother, very soon, I assure you.' Because I am the last of my name: my father's father's only grandson. I have a duty to preserve the honor of that name: a name which represents a blessed sacrifice, a friendship that brought my grandfather here to London: to Europe to France to Austria to help deliver my mother's people from the slavery of Nazism.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 1, Greenery & Land Reform, Section 5, Surrendering the Debate, Paragraph 10, Clauses 8-13

ALICE: I forgive you. Be a man once more.

FLETCHER: With a man's heart, I thank you. No longer must you fear my advances. The object of our intimacy has been achieved. I intend to follow your lead and pledge my life to the woman I love.

ALICE: Do I know her?

FLETCHER: You do. I love Kokomo with all my heart. My soul yearns for her soul's touch.

ALICE: In that case, let's finish these scenes in celebration of your restored manhood and your love for Kokomo.

FLETCHER: I know just the right page from which to start. 'What a blessed thing it is to confess! The firmly wound nut, when leashed to its bolt, will weather every blow. No strain is so big, no pressure so strong, no hand so steady, nor no patience so long that would eventually break the metal's hold when applied to just one end. It would turn forevermore in tantalizing defiance. Bring two solid hands together - with two worthy hearts - one to hold tight the bolt, the other to untwist his soul - and you shall feel the immediate release that with it brings joy, the work of resolution, and the ease which maketh that work seem slight.'

ALICE: Well proclaimed, poet!

FLETCHER: If only the rest were so good.

ALICE: I have no doubt it will be.

FLETCHER: As a show of thanks for your faith, I hereby expunge certain kisses from this scene, restoring to its solitary glory the one final kiss of the scene's end - if I may be so bold.

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
