Naked, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's poring over the viability of reinforcing his stupendous Fiction Corpus with some truly brilliant fairy tale stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't question the idea of enacting English as a universal language. I do doubt the vapid methodology by which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Enhancing one's handiness with a language isn't like producing a stronger mast. A language isn't merely a tool that you can teach yourself to use with greater amounts of precision. A common language cannot be cut off from the competing values of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to deprive him of its cultural context. A proper instructor has to create a strategy for introducing it; the insightful student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language based on a particular corpus, a set of writing of various size and consistency. Such a corpus can include anything from a book about literature to some real non fiction articles. I developed my "ordinary" Fiction Corpus to form a new kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have evaluated them, reframing them - not merely to teach English vocabulary but to reveal the human soul, and to provoke that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

Four days after I arrived in Poland, the largely Catholic country was celebrating Corpus Christi, complete with solemn processions down the street. Three days later I had made a solemn vow that if given the chance to express it, I would show love to a woman I had only just met.

Though I felt fully formed as a writer, and had been trained in visual language, it was my first time with a professional camera in my hands. I was just learning the ins and outs and had come to Europe to find as diverse a selection of subject matter as possible, preferably something that fit my aesthetic devotion to promoting body acceptance. Enter Margo.

Though I was born in Europe, I had been brought up from a young age in America, living in states as diverse as Nebraska, Ohio and Connecticut. I was taught American values and saw reality from an American perspective. She was born and raised in a village in Poland. She went to work in the nearest town. The nearest city seemed like the center of the world. The American perspective was not something she was ever planning to see.

6,000 miles. One car. One tent. We started learning how to listen. We started learning how to open up. We started cooperating. Even when we were angry, even when it was so difficult that it didn't seem like it would turn out well, we stuck it out. We completed the trip and we came back happy. We had beaten the devil on the road. Back home more devils were waiting to abuse us. More anger. More fear. More sadness. This time we were prepared. This time we had each other and we could harken back to the joy and the trust and the suprise that 6,000 miles had created. We could remember what it was like to live in one tent.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Naked

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word naked in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word naked, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word naked is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Naked in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

In the sacred forest that night, Jesus and Zoe made love on a bed of moss. Unlike the prevailing custom at the time - at least, among the elites - they removed all of their clothes and lay naked. That night, Your brother Michael was conceived. Blessed be that night forever.

Verse 152 from the chapter called Vows

In those days, there was a brief craze for communal flagellation. Flagellant processions were commonplace in the town of Treblinka for about five weeks. They began after a certain Jesuit from Italy came to speak at St. Hedwig's. During a strange and mostly tedious homily, which was barely being translated by the pastor, this Jesuit stripped himself naked (down to the waist), threw himself onto the tomb of Henry II (the Bearded), grabbed onto his scourge (which came out from nowhere) and started beating himself. There was silence but for the sounds of his whip. Blood was everywhere. "It was incredible," said the fortunate ones who saw it. "He kept doing it: right through the Eucharist. He didn't stop until every last person was done." After the Mass, people who prostrated themselves in front of the altar were beaten by the Jesuit. They were instructed in the mystic ways of flagellation. Everyone present was welcomed. There was a long, organizational meeting held in the presbytery, and the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament was formed.

Verse 430 from the chapter called Adolescence

"You're kidding, right?"

"Of course I am. Besides, I've seen you naked."

Verses 710-711 from the chapter called Bohemia

In the following minutes, your mother kept wiggling herself downward. At first, Jesus had no idea what was going on. (His left hand was cupping her breast.) Then he realized: she was pushing up her shirt. Her brassiere was gone, having been removed before going to bed. Jesus was perfectly free to place his cupping hand around her waist, and then, on the way back to where it just had been, to slip it ever so innocently underneath her shirt and to place it directly on her naked skin. He did that. Your mother was now breathing heavily.

Verse 633 from the chapter called Security

"It's not like nobody's ever seen her naked before - she posed nude - but still," I said, shaking my head in disbelief, "what would ever make them go away?"

"Money," said my grandfather's nephew.

Verses 350-351 from the chapter called Bohemia

Usage of Naked in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

NIKE: Look: this whole tunic business: I just don't fucking get it, you know? I mean the woman was walking around half-naked in the Bois de Boulogne.

INDIE: I know: it's crazy. I wish I saw her, man. She must have been fucking gorgeous.

NIKE: And you know what? As far I can tell, she was too hot to be either a nun or a prostitute.

INDIE: It's crazy, man.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 6, The Sixth Day, Part 1, Children & Education Reform, Section 5, Talking Through A Problem With A Friend, Paragraphs 14-17

ANDY: It's part of the custom, you know; it's an old wives' tale: if you're a girl and you look up the chimney naked, you'll see your future husband.

LUKA: What did she see?

ANDY: Well...

NIKE: Fortunately, she saw me.

LUKA: Ah! But who is the lucky one?

NIKE: Oh, she is - definitely.

LUKA: She is?

NIKE: Oh, yeah: I won't take yes for an answer.

ANDY: Nike, do you mind?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 9, The Male Perspective, Paragraphs 28-36

Now the reason for my erection was straightforward. The truth is: the sight of Gianni's naked body was, in fact, stimulating...and I often experienced erections in his presence. But, my arousal was not the product of desire: it was the product of a simple visual stimulant working with my imagination. To put it plainly: Giovanni was being sexy, and I was being aroused. Not everyone would be comfortable with himself in that sort of situation, but I knew it for what it was: intentional arousal on the part of Giovanni which I had nothing to do with. It didn't mean I wanted to have sex with him. It didn't mean I wanted to have sex with anyone. And I certainly didn't want him looking at me lustfully. I didn't want his hand on my shoulder petting me. I didn't want his hand anywhere else, but I didn't say anything, because...I was...I don't know: maybe I was waiting to see what would happen. But, of course, he was arousing me more and more: anybody's hand will do that, especially when it's drawing lightly across the skin.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 1, Greenery & Land Reform, Section 3, Explaining Things Honestly in an Incomplete Way, Paragraph 4, Clauses 7-18

Those legs were like two little piglets - what am I saying? They were like two gigantic piglets. And she was naked: she was naked reclining on top of pillows - a whole mound of pillows being crushed by that enormous weight. How could she walk? She had to be carried around on a gigantic litter. She was so heavy, her four porters were not standing: they were crawling: on their knees and elbows. There was a white one, a black one, a brown one, and a yellow one - a man for each corner crawling on his knees and elbows, hoping his back wouldn't break.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 15, The Rule of Fantasy Among Men, Paragraph 1, Clauses 11-16

Upon reaching the downstairs room, I closed the door. Going to the sofa, I began to strip. I unbuttoned half my blouse before I tore it off. Unzipping my skirt, I started tugging it down my thighs. I cursed myself for wearing stockings. Rolling one of them down, I looked at the clock: one minute before midnight. Tearing off the rest of my underwear, I cursed myself for wearing so much clothing - but, standing in the middle of the room stark naked, I now approached the fireplace. Kneeling before it, I opened its doors. I looked inside: it was very dirty; the flue was closed. I opened it, letting a small cloud of ash fall: I cursed myself for not preparing it earlier. I looked at the clock. There was still time. I turned myself around, my back facing the fireplace, and, positioning my hands behind me, I felt the cold tile.

Nike stretched his eyebrows. "I agree," he said. "It gets so wrinkly." Barbara looked out the window. She was surprised to see people. They were on the Reine.

Nike mused, "Most religious think vestments are a block that separates them from regular folks. In our case, I like to think it's brought us closer together." He put a hand on Barbara's leg.

Her head darted towards Luka. "Stop," she cried. Luka obliged.

Nike looked out the window. They were surrounded by half-naked freaks. He grimaced. He whined, "Don't stop."

In Japan, Patsy worked hard to acclimatize to the culture. He learned words like onna, meaning "woman," and utsukushii, meaning "beautiful," which Patsy found himself using all the time. There were also more complex words like kon'yoku, meaning "mixed bathing," and hadaka-mairi, meaning "visiting a shrine naked." One never knew when those might come in handy.

– from “A Cop Named Patsy,” a funny story featuring a cop who likes to joke around

"What's wrong?" asked Patsy. "This is what they call the long arm of the law. Stay here."

Down the boardwalk, Patsy encountered a naked old man sitting on a bench with his dog. "Excuse me, sir," said Patsy. "Park Police. Did you see a naked man run through here?"

"What's that?"

"A naked man."

"So it is."

"Have you seen one?"

"Have you seen a naked man?"

Somewhat less shockingly, two days later, Sergeant Cline showed up. "I knew you were in love with her," said Patsy. "Go for it. Don't mind me. There's only one reason why she's interested."

"What's that?" asked Sergeant Cline.

Patsy drew in his breath and leaned in. Batting his eyes and bobbing his head, he murmured, "She's seen me naked."

Patsy had his sights set on another woman: the beautiful Kubota Kumiko, whose name means, "Long-time lovely, little low-lying rice paddy," which is just what Patsy was looking for.

MS. JACKSON: They dance around with these masks?

LESBIAN: With mud caked over their entire bodies: from neck to toe.

ALICE: Are they naked?

LESBIAN: Of course not: they're wearing masks. In Rabaul - on the island of New Britain - I saw the famous Baining fire dance. There they wear masks that are made from bamboo, which they cover with tapa, a kind of bark cloth. That makes these masks very light. Naturally, they're even bigger.

MS. JACKSON: How big?

LESBIAN: Humongous: thirty to forty feet.

Usage of Naked in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Grandmother got halfway through tossing her hand. She lifted her finger again. "It's funny you should mention St. Andrew. Cherry branches weren't the only things girls used. On St. Andrew's Eve, if a girl swept the floor with a new broom at the stroke of midnight, the dirt would reveal the face of her future husband. It would help if she were stepping on a piece of silver. On the other hand, she could also try looking up a chimney. That was my favorite. You had to do it naked."

– from “St. Andrew's Eve,” a story of love that may calm one's sense of distaste depending on your outlook

I asked Indiana if she remembered last Christmas. "My grandmother told us about looking up chimneys naked."

Indiana smiled. "What did you see?"

"You will go to the Nautilus," said Orbitz. He started removing Sara Lee's skin suit. She did the same for him. "When you get there I'll already be onboard." Sara Lee stopped. Orbitz stared mournfully into her eyes. He said, "When you get there I won't remember this. I'll look much younger than I do now."

Sara Lee turned. Orbitz's hands hovered desperately above her naked shoulders. "I knew it," she said. "You're from the future." Orbitz grasped her. He embraced her as hard as he could.

Adam was gay. The intimacy of his relationship with Steve O was sending him the wrong signals. Especially when Steve O was really drunk and wielding his naked balls like a pair of nunchunks. As soon as Steve O realized what Adam's hand was doing and where his lips were, he basically borrowed the strength of ten men to heave him up and out of the room. The friendship suffered.

"Detective Carlson," came the mocking tone. "Nice of you to join us." The captain was at the crime scene. That meant there was no doubt. There was a link with the first body. "Are you ready for class?" continued the captain. "We're drawing from life today." It was another man. Standing naked. Twisting. His arm over his head. His eyes closed. His face cherry red. It was turned against his shoulder. Looking back as if on a lover. Frozen in a wistful remembrance of ecstasy too swiftly gone by. It was a statue of dead flesh.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
