Sexual, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal refuses to contemplate the soundness of compounding his unprepossessing Fiction Corpus with a treatise on wall art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't challenge the viability of utilizing English as an international standard. I don't accept the unspectacular steps through which English is taught.Pointer

Reenforcing one's skills with a language isn't like producing a more incorruptible banknote. A language - a spoken language - isn't merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to wield with greater amounts of precision. A living language can't be dissociated from the philosophical currents of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching students to recite English is to deprive them of its cultural context. A capable teacher must find a method of introducing it; the discerning student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language based on a particular corpus, a body of written works of various scope and consistency. Such a corpus might include everything from a book about literature to a bunch of narrative fiction. I forged my "sizeable" Fiction Corpus to form a precise type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have fashioned a million words and I have codified them, reshaping them - not just to teach the English tongue but to reveal the human spirit, and to goad that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Lots of people go on road trips. Not everybody criss-crosses Europe in 46 days. Especially not with a complete stranger.

Though I felt fully formed as a writer, and had been trained in visual language, it was my first time with a professional camera in my hands. I was just learning the ins and outs and had come to Europe to find as diverse a selection of subject matter as possible, preferably something that fit my aesthetic devotion to promoting body acceptance. Enter Margo.

As an American, I was full of optimism and confidence bordering on recklessness. I was ready to run the wheels off the car I had just bought and eventually I would. As a European, she was cautious and mistrustful. She needed to make sure the air conditioner worked. Which it did. If you knew how to turn the broken knob in just the right way.

Despite the cops in Vienna. Despite the rain in Veržej. Despite getting lost in Italy. Despite parting at Soest. Despite that night in Amsterdam. Despite our fight in Lisieux. Despite the storm in the Bois de la Roche. Despite that terrible morning outside Collonges. Despite the long road to Pielenhofen, we came back safe and sound and most importantly we were happy. We had started to learn how to listen. We had left the devils of the road behind and the devils ahead seemed just a little bit smaller. We had started to open up.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Sexual

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word sexual in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word sexual, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word sexual is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Sexual in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"There can be no doubt," said Jesus, "that you were engaging in homosexual activity in the commissariat - there's no other way we can be sure of success. You need to be ejaculating over the food."

"But in the ass?"

Verses 96-97 from the chapter called Security

They sold heroin to kids. Heroin was wrapped up in that 'premium silk.' They sold it to kids on the street. They sold it to mothers with young children. They sold it to workers, young and old, blue and white collared. They sold it to lunatics, healthy people, sick people, people in wheelchairs, deadbeats, homosexuals - they didn't discriminate. They sold it to priests, politicians, bus drivers, Jewish people -they sold it to anyone with money to spend. If you were penniless, you had to rob someone. But God forbid you should rob from them: they would kill you! They would shoot you dead! They were once your best friends back in the day. That's what it was like: they were once your best friends and they were still your neighbors; you would greet them on the way downstairs.

Verse 192 from the chapter called Adolescence

Usage of Sexual in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

ANDY: Because you only feel you need a man's love gazing back at you. But Macy: why does that love have to be gazing, or penetrating or kissing and hugging? All your friends keep saying 'it's not about sex, it's about love.' I don't believe they know what they're talking about. They're deceiving themselves: of course it's about sex. If you took the sex out of homosexuality there would be nothing left to talk about. All you people seem to think that sex can somehow transmit love. Explain to me how humping a man or a woman can possibly translate into love. Which fluid represents the love, Macy? Or is it the rubbing flesh? Please tell me, if you can, where exactly is the love in sex?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 1, Greenery & Land Reform, Section 5, Surrendering the Debate, Paragraph 4

But, unlike the sexual orientations, which are base and discriminate, what I call admiration does not discriminate; it is the supreme orientation to sit and wonder at the beautiful and the grotesque, the old and the new, the astonishing and the commonplace - everything and anything once we have allowed it to engage us.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 7, The Seventh Day, Part 1, Strength & Security Sector Reform, Section 2, Facing a Choice, Paragraph 10

BERT: Oh, he was crazy, just crazy - lived out of a bag: did nothing but travel from house to house visiting mathematicians. I believe his motto was something like, 'another roof, another proof.' But he said a lot of funny things. His favorite word was 'fascist.' He applied it to anything that annoyed him. And he would call everything fascist, indiscriminately, because anything could annoy him - except math. That's what he lived for: mathematics and nothing else. He would spend seventeen hours a day on math - didn't care about food, sex, family, nothing. Sexual pleasure annoyed him. And do you know what he called you if you were married?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 8, Financial Instruments, Paragraph 46

But the feeling is not usually stimulated by specific reminders like that. There are so many aspects of corporality; death is only one of them. There is also growth, sexuality - many other things.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 5, Inflammation of the Loins, Paragraph 2, Clauses 6-9

Not every patron was unknown to me. The really disturbing images were the ones involving people I knew: like Nike's mother, for instance - or worse: Luka. His presence not only made my involuntary reaction more vivid, but also more frequent and harder to control. Every time Nike referred to his partner, I found myself struggling not to imagine that relationship in its more carnal version. And because Luka was right there when this was all happening, the whole thing was so disturbing that my loins were becoming inflamed. It was the sexual energy created by these involuntary mental pictures - but especially the image of one man buttfucking another man, both of whom were standing right there in front of me! one of whom is married to the other's cousin! It made me shiver; and I couldn't stop it.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 16, Dealing with Medicines and Illness, Paragraph 5

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

She was the type of girl his mother would want him to marry. She was rich, sophisticated, charming, articulate, white, Protestant, not to mention sexually adventurous. It didn't matter she was in her forties. The problem was she was already married.

"You're what?" asked Junior, panting.

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story featuring a man with a mean mother

"Please understand," she whispered. "Your mother and I care for you deeply. I'm sorry it had to come to this. I had to tell her." Junior was confused.

Sammy D brought him to see her. The kiss the women shared was something more than cordial. Junior couldn't believe his eyes.

"I've been informed," said Dorothea, "you have serious intentions to marry a black South African. Do you deny this?"

Junior squinted. He started shaking his head. He laughed. He said, "Are you having a homosexual love affair with a fetish club performer?"

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story featuring true love

"It's alright. It's like the Bois de Vincennes only better. Instead of vans, they're parked in beamers. They're the most expensive girls in Paris. They're clean-most of the time. You get to go to an apartment. It's fun: millionaire alley. We should drive by. Where are we anyway? You turned off the road. We're in the middle of nowhere."

"Aren't you going to give Rothko a call?"

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story set in a place where sexual services can be bought

Soon after this revelation, Junior had an incident. He found himself being aroused by a young caddy's very hairy chest. Giving the boy a look, the boy returned the look. Junior followed him into a closet. After so many years of casual heterosexual and group sex, it had come to this.

– from “A Horse Named Clutch Bag,” an inspiring story featuring sex

"This is no time for games."

"Go," said Nike. "Outside." He tried to point through the window. He couldn't lift his arm. His lips curled into a smile. "Earn it."

Luka laughed nervously. "This is no joke. If I don't pay them, they're going to kill me."

Nike furrowed his brow. Like a little boy, he asked, "Why?"

"Don't worry about it."

"Okay." Nike passed out.

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

MS. JACKSON: If he came to me repentant of his sins - I mean all of them - I would forgive him. I would consider allowing him to return to this house. Do you think I don't want him? I want him more than you could ever know. I want him in a way that, unfortunately, I have never had him. I won't settle for less than I deserve. That's all I'm going to say on the subject. It upsets me. Your father has behaved strangely in the past; as of late, his actions have been frightening me. Maybe it is the climate around here - I'm not going to take any chances. (to KOKOMO) I want you to watch out for him, in case he should try to violate you.

FLETCHER: That is unwarranted.

MS. JACKSON: It may have taken a hundred and fifty years for another murder to occur, but we are not immune to rape. We need only bear witness to what took place on Pitcairn in recent times. Six men were found guilty of sexual offenses. That's almost the entire adult male population over there. I'm not going to let that happen around here - not while I'm alive. Do you understand? As soon as you're done with this mess, Kokomo, I would like these towels to go to the laundry. We have all of Lesbian's things to wash.

KOKOMO: I have a question, ma'am.

MS. JACKSON: Yes?

KOKOMO: Will our guest from New Zealand be staying with us for considerably longer than planned? If that's the case, I'm going to have to make a new schedule.

MS. JACKSON: I don't know, dear. I don't think so, but, then again, you can never be sure, can you? Just stick to the current schedule for now. I'm sorry if you've been overworked.

KOKOMO: That is not my concern at all.

MS. JACKSON: I just want Homo to feel as welcome as possible. Thank you for your continued cooperation. Excuse me.

– ACT I, lines 1323-1332

(ALICE exits.)

FLETCHER: If that isn't childish, I don't know what is. Am I right?

LUKE: Is what Kokomo said true?

FLETCHER: What do you mean?

LUKE: Does she think girls are better than blokes?

FLETCHER: That's what I was trying to refute.

LUKE: She said that girls are sexier.

FLETCHER: I imagine what she was trying to say is that, with women, sexuality is more physically apparent, as if that were a good thing.

– ACT I, lines 721-727

FLETCHER: If he came to you in penitence, would you accept him?

MS. JACKSON: That's difficult for me to say.

FLETCHER: It's not. Tell us. If he were sorry, would you forgive him?

MS. JACKSON: If he came to me repentant of his sins - I mean all of them - I would forgive him. I would consider allowing him to return to this house. Do you think I don't want him? Usage of Sexual in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

I've never raped a woman. I would never want to. Not sexually. I told my wife once I wanted to rape her. That comment needs to be taken in context. We were at an art gallery. We were looking at a picture of the Sabine women.

– from “The Backed-Up Toilet,” a literature story based on true experiences as I remember them

Grendel kept coming back to the book. She read about penises and vaginas. She learned about sexual intercourse. It had to do with a man and a woman in bed kissing. Like her mother and the ogre. There was a picture of it but it didn't look anything like a man or a woman. It was squiggly lines.

– from “Little Grendel's First Hair,” a fairy tale story where the terrible happens not entirely unlike the real world

Steve O's discovery of his latest cure-all came as quite the surprise. He was born a raging and inveterate heterosexual. He had never imagined or conceived or even thought of the possibility that there was anything to be gained by going up, as he put it, the wrong way at the wrong end. It was out of the question.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that should be taken lightly, but what you make of it is up to you

Winter came. One day Grendel escaped from her cabin. She went to another cabin and saw an older girl through the window. She was having sexual intercourse. The witch found Grendel and took her back to her own cabin.

Grendel told the witch she wanted to go home. The witch laughed. She told her to wait for the Chinook. The Chinook would come and melt the snow. Then she could go home.

– from “Little Grendel's First Hair,” a fairy tale story where the unthinkable happens not entirely unlike the real world

The wedding was postponed. Steve O got a chance to look deep into his heart. He explored his feelings. Adam helped Steve O realize that enjoying a finger up the bum had nothing to do with being gay. If Steve O had romantic feelings for Adam, as Adam might still have for Steve O, there were ways in which they could develop those feelings in a non-sexually threatening way.
