Giant, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal rejects the thought of amplifying his walloping Fiction Corpus with some true stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the possibility of harnessing English as humanity's second language. I don't regard highly the blah blah blah process by which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Polishing one's knowledge of a language isn't like developing a stronger crane. A language - a living tongue - isn't merely a tool that you can learn to employ with greater amounts of precision. A living tongue can not be segmented from the prevailing culture of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a person to recite English is to strip her of its cultural context. A worthy educator has to have a strategy for introducing it; the discerning pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define words based on a specific corpus, a body of written works of various size and consistency. Such a corpus can include everything from a book about literature to a collection of top fiction novels. I burned many candles forging my "imposing" Fiction Corpus in order to form a precise kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have pieced together a million words and I have broken them down, reframing them - not simply to teach English vocabulary but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to coax that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

In June of 2011 I arrived in Europe for what I hoped would be a great adventure; my only concrete plan, to visit Croatia. By September I had driven 6,000 miles and visited 12 different countries, all with a woman I met on the first Friday of my trip.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

I considered myself young and able, and being American I often convinced myself I was more than able. She didn't feel quite so young. Having grown up in Poland, what was and is still considered by many to be a poor country, she had the added burden of not only being disadvantaged but having it held against her. The difference became palpable when I realized I couldn't even properly translate into Polish the very American word, "opportunity." A chance? Sure. An occasion? Why not? An opportunity? Not in the book.

Each man grows up with his own kind of poverty. Even if he's got a warm house and plenty of food and a soft bed and plenty of entertainment, there's always something that a man needs. Sometimes he just needs to be listened to, if only by the birds and the trees, but preferably by another man, even if he's an artist from America who isn't very good at listening. By learning how to listen, we learn how to cooperate. By cooperating, we build a better world. In a better world, there are no devils to abuse us. A better world doesn't lend itself to abuse because a better world is populated by people who have learned how to listen.

a collection of modern art prints and posters

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Giant

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word giant in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word giant, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word giant is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Giant in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

When the town authorities moved the marketplace to the other side of town, your grandfather refused to move. The old marketplace had been only a hundred meters away from Town Square; the mayor had moved it clear across town because somebody's son-in-law was planning to buy some property there and build a giant store complex. Nobody wanted to go that far and that was the point: the mayor had built the new marketplace with town money just so nobody would go there and he could call it unprofitable, which meant that he could then sell it to somebody's son-in-law, who could then build a giant store complex without having to spend all of his money on foundations or water and gas. It was intentional. Everybody knew it.

Verse 68 from the chapter called Adolescence

She rolled her tongue around in her giant mouth. "Is that right?" she asked.

Verse 712 from the chapter called Bohemia

There was a giant question mark between the Russians, on the one hand, and the Krupniks on the other. The relationship between Krupnik Holding S.A. and Russian oil was obvious. Though diversified, Krupnik Holding had decisive shares mostly in oil companies, most of whom refined and distributed mostly Russian oil. Those companies, unable to distribute their refined oil on Earth, were now hoping to distribute it to the new interplanetary shipping companies being formed. Those companies, in turn, were courting the spaceports, the orbitports, and, as far as they could, the stationports - arranging, as often as they could, exclusive contracts. Everyone, from the small oil company to the independent spaceport, was supporting Hitler Panzer-Tank's private war.

Verse 213 from the chapter called Security

When I close my eyes, my mind is spinning: revolving: eating itself. I see a giant pinwheel in space - FUX PINWHEEL. A galaxy! People spinning together; people spinning apart - the center: together; the edge: apart. People spinning away! People spinning together! The nation! A crucible! Fire of life! The blast furnace of war! The slag! Fumes! People in the fumes! People in the bloom! The bloom! Nation! Blessed nation!

Verse 12 from the chapter called Invocation

On the way to his first - and, as it turned out, his last - hearing, Jesus's face was covered. The County Commandant and the County Sheriff had their offices right next to each other on the main road in Treblinka - right at the head of the main road to Wroclaw. They were manor houses, ancient palaces built centuries ago by wealthy residents, no doubt commandeered during some dark and long-forgotten age by the State. Jesus had been kept in the donjon, so to speak. On his way out, there was a crowd of salivating reporters vying for a statement, a crowd of photographers attempting to get his photograph, and lots and lots of video cameras recording Jesus's head being tucked into the giant arm of an anti-terrorist police officer wearing a black mask. Jesus's face was also covered with black cloth. He was famous - what a surprise. This is my father's legacy, thought Jesus.

Usage of Giant in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I'm sure there was no other option, if Indiana had to ask me. I have no business taking care of children. I can't imagine what will happen; I told this to Indiana, but she was convinced: she said that I would do no harm and that no harm could come to me. "They love you, Giant: they will listen to you." I told her: I don't know what to do or what to tell them. She said: "bathe Fabric, because Friday is the day she has a bath. Then, put them to bed." And pray, I said. "Yes, of course, you must pray - but really, Giant, it will not be so difficult."

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 6, Making a Request, Paragraph 2

After dinner we went to the Viennese Prater. I challenged Macy to a duel on the punching machine: he didn't want to do it, and after I beat him I was pretty sure he hadn't tried his hardest - of course, who knows how those machines work. We even had our picture taken right in front of the Reisenrad, the giant Ferris wheel, and then we took a ride. We had ice cream. It was a very beautiful night, and a few days later, I left for America.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 4, Meeting a Man in Austria, Paragraph 9

INDIE: I used to call him by his Hungarian name but now I call him Giant. (I think he likes it).

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 23, Introducing a Female Friend to a Male Friend, Paragraph 13

NIKE: It's a nickname, given to me by my great friend, Andrea.

INDIE: Andrea? Is she your girlfriend?

NIKE: Ha! Absolutely not! Unless he gets a sex change: then I'll consider it.

INDIE: Oh! you mean Giant!

NIKE: Do I?

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 23, Introducing a Female Friend to a Male Friend, Paragraphs 8-12

You remember what she said at the door? She said: "Albert is always working. He works nonstop: nothing but work, work, work. I am afraid to leave him alone with Olympia. One time, he was in the room with her. He was working of course. And Olympia was jumping on the mattress in her crib. She jumped right out of it! She jumped over the railing. Not only that, but she flipped: in mid-air she flipped around. Luckily too - because that way she must have fell on her back. But she was holding onto the railing - you know? when she jumped? That's why she flipped. Otherwise, she would be dead right now: kaput. She would have fall right on the head. Good thing she is older: she will not crack it. But God knows, she will poke her eye out with scissors and Albert will not even notice. How are you, Giant? You are looking very handsome today, like always - very nice. I wish you all the best on the occasion of your name-day."

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

"That's right. He must have been working there. I'm looking for a man from Asia who has worked in some capacity on a giant statue. There are five statues in Asia taller than the Statue of Liberty, if you include the pedestal, and twelve excluding it-all of them representations of the Buddha."

"What's that?"

– from “A Cop Named Patsy,” a funny story featuring a cop who takes a liking to Japanese women

Magog drew her sickle-sword. She failed twice to pierce the skin. Gog grabbed the handle. He lodged the blade into the beast. Magog's feet gave way. She grabbed hold. The dragon shook off the fire. Gog and Magog held for their lives.

"I thought you said the dragon was inside the mountain," said Gog.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a man with a giant tribe of people

"Away," said Gog. "To the land of the two rivers."

"To beg for your food?"

Gog turned. He said, "To conquer it."

The woman laughed. "How can you expect to conquer a land of kings? You cannot even rape a woman."

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a man with a giant tribe of people

The ground heaved. Magog shared a quick glance with her husband. The hillside lurched. The two stumbled. A deafening roar echoed through the valley. They realized they were on the back of a giant dragon. It was lifting itself. The hillside was getting steep. They were going to fall. Gog drew Skin Smoother. He lifted it above his head. He thrust it into the quickly rising ridge. The earth bled. Gog turned to his consort. "Now!" he shouted.

Tae stared.

"This is an alien planet, Kung," said the woman with the strong features. "How do you know a giant serpent isn't waiting there to eat you?"

Usage of Giant in Sorry Ms. Jackson

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

LESBIAN: I was in Goroka - in the highlands of New Guinea - in September, I believe - for the cultural show. There I saw the Mudmen.

MS. JACKSON: Who are the Mudmen?

LESBIAN: The Mudmen make these clay masks - some big, some small -all of them hideously grotesque with giant noses and sharp, pointy teeth.

MS. JACKSON: They dance around with these masks?

LESBIAN: With mud caked over their entire bodies: from neck to toe.

ALICE: Are they naked?

LESBIAN: Of course not: they're wearing masks. In Rabaul - on the island of New Britain - I saw the famous Baining fire dance. There they wear masks that are made from bamboo, which they cover with tapa, a kind of bark cloth. That makes these masks very light. Naturally, they're even bigger.

MS. JACKSON: How big?

LESBIAN: Humongous: thirty to forty feet.

ALICE: No way!

– ACT I, lines 414-423

AT RISE: KOKOMO is wiping up the floor.

KOKOMO: Clean. Clean. Clean. We are obsessed by cleaning. If space is a giant vacuum, why does all the dust settle here: underneath the table? Why not in the middle of the floor? Where I can see it? Where I can wipe it up with my feet? We know perfectly well why, don't we, Kokomo? Master Fletcher can't be bothered to take off his shoes. Thanks to him, it's: 'wipe the floor, Kokomo.' Yes, Ms. Jackson. 'Clean the kitchen, girl.' Yes, Ms. Jackson. 'When is lunch, dear?' I don't know, Ms. Jackson. Honestly, where does all this dust come from? What am I supposed to do with it? There really is no sense in cleaning more than once a month. Let the moon show when it's time to clean. Ms. Jackson certainly doesn't know. She would have me clean my way right into an early grave. Kokomo was not built for dust. She was built for love.

MS. JACKSON: (off) Kokomo!

KOKOMO: Yes, Ms. Jackson.

Usage of Giant in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Mark and Bill meanwhile were flipping through their respective letters. Mark looked up and caught sight of the old man bending over again and looking through his viewfinder. Mark sped up. He was going to get a glimpse of the eagle before it flew off. He floored the gas. Oblivious to the dangers beyond, he was rushing past the hedgerow. He craned his neck and saw a giant blue and white eagle on the side of Bill's truck. The professor hit the shutter button. Mark frantically swerved. The camera's continuous drive clicked and clicked. Mark hit the brakes. The truck slid heading straight for the professor. Its wheels locked. It surfed on the unswept gravel of the westbound lane of Profile Road and thankfully stopped before crossing the center line. Just as a UPS truck headed east. The driver saw the mass of white coming from his left and instinctively swerved away. Right into the professor. The old man was launched into the sky. Mark watched in horror as the body sailed a good 60 feet before flailing onto the ground. Mark looked at the UPS truck. The driver was paralyzed. Mark looked back at the body. He drove the 60 feet between them. There was no time to run. Reaching the remains of the professor, Mark curbed the wheels. He put the gear in park. He pulled the hand brake. He shut the engine and took out the keys. He didn't want anybody accusing him of not following proper dismounting procedures. He hopped down to the body and saw there was little to be done. He called for an ambulance.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story to teach children about physical stuff that may or may not work

"I'm lying," said Orbitz Nombre Trois. "I used to do that to myself all the time. I know exactly which way I came. I tried to beat myself. I got stopped for questioning on the cruise ship. There was no way around it. Just like there's no way around the gas giant. You're going to fail."

"I can't know that for sure," said Orbitz Número Dos. "As far as I know you and the other one are hallucinations."

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance in the spirit of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

Inside the cage stood a pretty little girl with the legs of a giant spider. From behind those legs a hairy abdomen suddenly poked down. It spewed a thin secretion across the faces of the men. They cried out and dropped to the floor. They started writhing in pain. Their movements jerked more and more until their limbs finally locked in a rigid posture. They heard helplessly the sound of a man calmly climbing up the stairs. It was Orbitz. The men recognized him. Unable to express their shock their eyes blazed with confusion and fury. Orbitz knelt among them. "I'm sorry," he said. "The creature poisoned you with a paralytic. At this dosage it's fatal. I didn't want any of you to die. It wasn't up to me. She didn't want to take any chances with her freedom. I wish I could stay with you until the end. Unfortuately the creature has a short refractory period. I have to surgically remove her gland before she's capable of killing me."

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance in the tradition of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

"The mission failed," said Orbitz Número Dos. "An intruder was aboard. He sabotaged the ship as soon as we were clear of the wormhole. The whole engine blew. Most of the ship fell into the gas giant. The rest fell back into the singularity."

"Who's the saboteur?"

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance dictated by my respect for Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

The trip was off on the wrong foot. It didn't improve when we reached Woodstock. As Steve drove through the town I took notice of the locals. Most of them seemed normal. A lot of people seem normal. One of them stood out. A tall lanky redheaded woman with long hair wearing a shapeless robe was lurching down the sidewalk in giant flip-flops. I thought to myself, "That woman looks lost."

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
