Physical, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal refuses to debate the idea of boosting his insignificant Fiction Corpus with a fable about the many types of fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't reject the viability of exploiting English as the international community's second language. I don't think highly of the unnewsworthy technique by which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Strengthening a person's familiarity with a language isn't like bringing about a more accurate map. A language - a common tongue - isn't just a tool that you can learn to manipulate with a greater amount of precision. A shared language can't be pulled from the competing values of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching pupils to recite English is to strip them of its cultural context. A proper instructor must develop a strategy for introducing it; the bravest pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define words based on a particular corpus, a set of written works of various size and consistency. They can include anything from a biography of the world's top fiction authors to some truly realistic fiction. I burnt many candles laboring on my "overwhelming" Fiction Corpus in order to form a precise genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have strung together a million words and I have codified them, reshaping them - not just to teach American vocabulary but to reveal the human spirit, and to coax that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Help End Bullying With ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

Lots of people go on road trips. Not everybody criss-crosses Europe in 46 days. Especially not with a complete stranger.

Though I felt fully formed as a writer, and had been trained in visual language, it was my first time with a professional camera in my hands. I was just learning the ins and outs and had come to Europe to find as diverse a selection of subject matter as possible, preferably something that fit my aesthetic devotion to promoting body acceptance. Enter Margo.

I was American. Freshly arrived in Europe and the new owner of a '97 Ford Escort made in Germany. The only thing I had to complain about was the fact that the owner's manual was in German. She was from Poland, and a German-language owner's manual for a car bought in Poland wasn't the only thing she had to complain about. Something as small as that didn't even register.

I've never been married. I've never been divorced. I've never had kids. I've never lost my kids. That doesn't mean I can't try to understand somebody who has. By listening to Margo during our trip across Europe I started to consider her needs as if they were my own. I may not have been in a position to satisfy all of those needs, but I was able to shut up and put my own needs aside if I had to for at least 6,000 miles. We all need to be listened to and it is the one need that we all have a duty to satisfy. When somebody prays to another human, as a human you have a duty to listen. Humanity needs to start teaching itself that skill.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Physical

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word physical in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word physical, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word physical is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Physical in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

At one point, a stomach virus was going around. Sapper was hit two days before Jesus felt it. The night before your father got sick, he made himself sausages and ate them with ketchup. A week earlier, Jesus had felt a craving for ketchup, and, ordering Sapper to buy as many different varieties as he could find, Jesus had been given mild and spicy ketchup, ketchup in glass jars and plastic bottles, ketchup with and without onions, and so forth and so on. Jesus had the virus for a good four days: the first day was the worst: that night he vomited four times. The second day was better, but he still couldn't eat anything. The third day, Jesus was still confined to bed, but at least he was eating. On the fourth day, Jesus thought he was fine. That night, he ate sausages with ketchup. Waking up in the wee hours of the morning, Jesus vomited and felt his stomach tumbling and twisting and turning around. The feeling was gut-wrenching. Jesus concentrated all his psychophysical effort into calming his stomach. It worked, but it also required all of Jesus's attention. He couldn't sleep. When he moved a finger, his stomach rebelled. If his eyelids twitched, he lost concentration. Jesus had to give up. Suffering great pain, he thought to himself: they've poisoned me! like they did to that Ukrainian.

Verse 478 from the chapter called Arms

Anyway, throughout the whole thing, Jesus kept your mother's best interests at heart. Her health - physical, mental, and spiritual - was Jesus's top priority, even when it jeopardized the mission. That's how much he cared.

Verse 1122 from the chapter called Security

Later that day, your father was called to the principal's office. In the presence of his mother, he was angrily accused of lying, endangering his own health and encouraging others to do so. He was threatened with expulsion. His mother cried; Jesus rebuked her. He felt sorry for the friend or friends who had betrayed him. He was only trying to liberate his friends, not to hurt them. That day, among the shouts of his principal, your father learned the most important lesson he would ever learn in school: mental and physical prowess may grant one fame, or infamy, but is quite incapable of transferring authority away from those who have it.

Verse 137 from the chapter called Childhood

Usage of Physical in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I started slapping my own face. I slapped away. I kept slapping for a good six seconds - maybe more - but then - finally - I was done. I was more than done: I was quite finished; and, composing myself, I looked up to see if my companions were staring. And of course, they were staring; but they were amused: they must have been very high on weed. Thankfully, that gave me something to think about. The images were gone - even though I was now reflecting on their absence. But I was free to make a happy face, a goofy smile: as if to say my spastic behavior was nothing less than the brilliant physical witticism of a drastically high man. "Dude," I said, very convincingly, "I am fuckin' high, man. It's been a while. Do you know what my brain just said? It said, 'Welcome back, Mary Jane. Nice of you to drop by.' Wow. I am bliz-azed."

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 16, Dealing with Medicines and Illness, Paragraph 7

In truth, he was nervous, but for another reason: not that he'd find himself at a loss for words or action, but that he would be unable to find that woman again. There was only a small chance in hell that he would ever see her, but that's why he felt he must return and keep returning to that awful place: that fantastic middle of night, inside the Bois de Boulogne: that gorgeously engorging thruway: that clogged artery, that alleyway of the daisy queen - beautiful, flowery queen - until he found his own.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 2, Understanding Physical Desire, Paragraph 7

We were driving up the Allée du Bord de l'Eau, having turned, I presume, from Anatole Boulevard. Perhaps Nike was looking across the river at something - I don't know. At any rate, it was nighttime and very dark - there was no moon - and yet, I could see Nike's face very clearly. Perhaps a glare from the lights of the console: I couldn't see them from where I was, but, perhaps, owing to Nike's hunched-over position (which he would only relax when he was looking down his nose, at which point, he was leaning back in his chair - but only briefly, as then he would lean forward again), with his body thus contracted, the lights from the console may have been reflecting off his face, concentrating under his brow - but, I suppose, it may have been a reflection from the dashboard, angled as it was towards the driver, or maybe a combination thereof - regardless, there was a distinct glare on his face, and, hollowing out his features, he looked like the devil's minion, or, at least, someone trapped in hell: either a weary traveler misled, or a duty-bound man who was chafing against the fiber of his will.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 2, Understanding Physical Desire, Paragraph 2, Clauses 1-4

I had to save her - and soon! because it suddenly occurred to me that the whole room was now in conspiracy to let this creature fall. Perhaps, like me, they were all smitten by the terrible beauty of the moment, but I am not so generous. If they were thinking at all, they were relishing the terrible possibilities of her fate. With time quickly running out, I let my long-standing hatred of our generation break the surface and infect my countenance. I shot Luke the meanest look I think I've ever given him. I expected him to do absolutely nothing, or else to do something stupid: I don't know: like raise the bid an extra five dollars after a beggar had raised it twenty - but no: instead, he yelled out a hundred and five dollars so quickly that I was physically surprised.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 7, Dating a Woman with Dogs, Paragraph 8

And we did kiss, twice, before I was fully aware of what was happening, before I was able to push him away, and sneer at his poor judgment. Do not think that I was preparing to punish him; in fact, I was overwhelmed with pity. You must understand that I still loved him, but that this love had suffered much, and could not necessarily translate into physical desire. I went on to say many terrible things that night, but if I be innocent, it is only because I said those things out of brutal honesty, which is exactly what my old friend Macy lacked.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 7, Trying to Kiss, Paragraph 11

Usage of Physical in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

It must be easy for men like Jeff and Matt to get rid of love. To move on. Their torches must be tiny. I couldn't do it. I would burn for love brighter than a billion arrows. I would rip this rubber shell right off my soul. But I can't do it on a chance. It's too risky.

– from “A Magnum Condom,” a bedtime story to teach children about physical stuff that may or may not work

The orbits of Captain Orbitz as told and retold by trillions of Orion systemizens, indeed systemizens from across many a galaxy, never fluctuated from their purpose of helping Captain Tycho "Tych" Orbitz conquer his home galaxy. Tych was firm from the day he resigned his commision as a courier in the Star Alliance to the day he vanished into space. Many were afraid he would come back. Many more hoped he would. They thought he was out pirating somewhere with Lalunia, his pheromonically irresistible great-great-great-great-niece, or ruling a planet with the beautifully blue Sara Lee, or fighting the jilted queen of the Astrazeneca or playing chess with CAROline the computer that loved him. They didn't know he was dead. They had no idea he had died long before he had even resigned his commission. Before he hijacked the tesseract marking the beginning of his rebellion or piloted the stolen ship Nautilus into the singularity the man had physically removed his own dead body from the bridge. He had no choice. At the time the ship was scheduled to be inspected by Star Alliance sanitation officers.

– from “The Death and Life of Captain Orbitz,” a science fiction romance in the spirit of Stanislaw Lem, if you know who that is

A few months later the professor was again observing Bill and Mark going up the hill. He noted the difference in time. He calmly consulted his formula. He calculated a 95% chance of collision. There had never been such a high probability. The professor rushed out of the house. Again he almost tripped and fell on the tripod. He set himself up on the side of the road. He made sure the lighting was adequate. He programmed the continuous drive. He heard the sound of two engines coming down the hill. He couldn't stop smiling. He was on the verge of a photographic masterpiece. Better than the shot of the two cars that got stuck trying to get into the same tollbooth. This would be a series of pictures framed and hung in a massive room in a famous art gallery. "Dueling postmen" he would call it. "No," he thought to himself. "Large Postman Collider. An Experiment in Physics."

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story to teach children about the physical world that may or may not work

Mark and Bill meanwhile were flipping through their respective letters. Mark looked up and caught sight of the old man bending over again and looking through his viewfinder. Mark sped up. He was going to get a glimpse of the eagle before it flew off. He floored the gas. Oblivious to the dangers beyond, he was rushing past the hedgerow. He craned his neck and saw a giant blue and white eagle on the side of Bill's truck. The professor hit the shutter button. Mark frantically swerved. The camera's continuous drive clicked and clicked. Mark hit the brakes. The truck slid heading straight for the professor. Its wheels locked. It surfed on the unswept gravel of the westbound lane of Profile Road and thankfully stopped before crossing the center line. Just as a UPS truck headed east. The driver saw the mass of white coming from his left and instinctively swerved away. Right into the professor. The old man was launched into the sky. Mark watched in horror as the body sailed a good 60 feet before flailing onto the ground. Mark looked at the UPS truck. The driver was paralyzed. Mark looked back at the body. He drove the 60 feet between them. There was no time to run. Reaching the remains of the professor, Mark curbed the wheels. He put the gear in park. He pulled the hand brake. He shut the engine and took out the keys. He didn't want anybody accusing him of not following proper dismounting procedures. He hopped down to the body and saw there was little to be done. He called for an ambulance.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story to teach children about physical stuff that may or may not work

I went to see Parker. I consoled her. We talked about funny things that happened at camp. Funny kids we were glad to be rid of. She asked if I was seeing anybody. I said no. She asked if there was anybody on the horizon. I shook my head. She fell quiet. She looked sad.

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
