Weird, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is wrestling with the soundness of boosting his run-of-the-mill Fiction Corpus with even more fiction book titles; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the idea of implementing English as everybody's second language. I don't have faith in the unimaginative plan by which the English language is taught.Pointer

Fine-tuning a person's mastery of a language isn't like launching a smoother toilet paper. A language - a spoken language - is not just an instrument that you can teach yourself to manipulate with greater amounts of precision. A spoken tongue can't be ripped from the prevailing culture of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a man to recite English is to cheat him out of its cultural context. A worthy educator must create a strategy for introducing it; the perceptive pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of writing of various scope and consistency. A corpus could contain everything from a book about literature to some really short bedtime stories. I burnt many candles forging my "prodigious" Fiction Corpus to form a precise genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have crafted a million words and I have tabulated them, reshaping them - not merely to teach an American tongue but to promote the human soul, and to encourage that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Weird

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word weird in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word weird, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word weird is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Weird in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"Yes," she said, nodding. "I did."

"Is it that bad?" I asked.

"It's my father," she said. "He's very weird."

I smiled, but I didn't say anything.

After a moment, she said, "He would that."

"No," I said. "He's not that cruel."

Verses 586-591 from the chapter called Bohemia

"That's weird."

"I know," she said. "I'm a weird, little girl."

We walked in silence again.

"Did you like them?" she asked.

"Like what?"

"The photographs."

Verses 721-726 from the chapter called Bohemia

"That's weird," I said.

"He's the only person I've ever had sex with."

"How generous."

Verses 701-703 from the chapter called Bohemia

"Now," he told me once, when he came to visit me on leave, "I'm lucky if they let me fall asleep before dawn. They make us hold stools all night long, when we're running, when we're doing calisthenics, when we go to the bathroom - then, after about five hours of holding stools, we stand in a row and hold them out in front of us. We have to hold them by gripping the bottom of one leg. Then they come with bottles of water, not to let us drink - God forbid they should let us drink. They put the bottles onto our stools - if we spill them, they kick us in the gut. Then, we get to kick them back - if we don't, they kick us again. It's very weird."

"Very sadistic," I said.

Verses 20-21 from the chapter called Arms

They walked in silence down the street until Zoe laughed.

"You're so weird," she said.

Verses 335-336 from the chapter called Security

Usage of Weird in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

This lecture: it's right up your alley. But I was afraid if I went to this guy, it would be a little weird, you know, because he asked me. No, it was a lot weirder than that. Before I even had a chance to tell him about you, the guy tells me that he's sorry, that he can't go, that he has to take his wife someplace else but that he's happy I can go, and then he hands me three invitations. "I know," he says, "you'll have no trouble finding someone to go with you." Can you believe that? So I call up Macy and here we are: the three of us. This guy - the one giving the lecture - he's supposed to be really good, you know, really famous or something."

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 12, Private Clubs, Paragraph 3, Clauses 11-18

NIKE: She said she had to be in the Bois. But she was already in the Bois. She seemed very nervous, but she wasn't shaken.

INDIE: That's very weird.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 9, Respecting Another's Politics, Paragraphs 15-16

NIKE: It's because they're disgusting. They're all from Brazil or something. They've got a lot of weird poor people.

LUKA: Why would anybody want them?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 20, Encountering the Sex Trade, Paragraphs 31-32

Now that I know that you and Indiana shared this weird moment so many years ago, all the other strange moments begin to seem almost natural. I used to give those oddities no other explanation but their own familiar pattern of incongruity; now that I know how they might involve you, they seem to fall naturally into place. The behavior that I used to ascribe purely to some sort of illogical mania now takes on the quality of pure logic. How else could such a woman try to seduce you?

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 5, Warts, Paragraph 1

INDIE: I heard about this weird place that keeps movin' around Paris. If you can find it, you should check it out.

NIKE: What's it called?

INDIE: Madame Bocelli.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 9, Respecting Another's Politics, Paragraphs 34-37

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

The investigator was in the middle. He was holding up an automatic pistol. He was flanked on either side by the submachine-gun-wielding guards. He stepped forward. Clark and the man from the PSB were out of sight.

The imam entered through the gate.

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring a frank discussion of one man's weird idea of helping people

Neal's arm made it past the threshold. Tatum grabbed his collar. She heaved on it. Neal's shoulder made it. She let go of the arm to grab the back. The arm smacked her in the face. Tatum roared. She got the torso inside. It was working. She grabbed the waist. Piece by piece, Tatum pulled in Neal's limp body from outside. It collected behind her. As soon as the soles of his boots had crossed the threshold, Tatum shut the door. She collapsed against it. She panted.

"They must get smelly."

Tatum walked briskly. Her heels clicked against the tiles. The sound echoed throughout the dark building. Tatum realized it was sunset. By the time she passed the last partition, she could barely make out the sign of the black trefoil in front of her.

She turned. Her heels snapped on the tiles. A figure, half-submerged, leaned against the far wall.

Tatum planted her foot. She kicked. Neal's body fluttered. There was too much force. Tatum grimaced. Her back gave way. She slammed against the door. She wouldn't let go. She braced herself. She planted her foot again. She kicked. She roared. She pulled.

Usage of Weird in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

"What about this one," said Proctor. He was pointing to vic number two. "According to his bondsman you put up his bail."

"Oh," said John. "I wouldn't know anything about that. It's probably something my husband did. He's an art dealer. He co-owns a gallery down the street."

"Do you drive a silver SUV, Mr. Gamble?" asked Proctor.

"No," said John. Looking as innocent as a fudge-covered child. "I still don't drive."

"What about your husband?" asked Proctor.

John shook his head. "He drives a smart car."

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring an artist's model put in a weird position

"A heroin overdose could've been an accident," continued Proctor. "The positioning of the body could've been a sick joke. But this," he said, pointing towards the gurney. "This is a step up. If the redness means carbon monoxide, this needed planning. Serious forethought. Not to mention a familiarity with pathology."

The captain grimaced. "Just what I was afraid of," he said. "There's no way we're gonna keep this from the press. It's probably on the internet already. Do we warn the artistic community?"

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring an investigator put in a weird position

"I don't know," said John.

"How do you not know?"

"I don't remember." John screamed a little too loud. Proctor eased up.

"Where's the letter?"

"Probably in his desk."

"At the gallery?"

"At his apartment."

"What apartment?"

"The one right below us."

"In this building?"

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a cop put in a weird position

Proctor and Simmons left for the gallery. On the way down the stairs Bob called. He said something interesting had been found at the basement apartment. "An uncashed check," he said. "Made out to the vic. From three years ago. For five grand. Who doesn't cash a check like that?"

Proctor was nearing the end of the stairs. He asked, "Whose check was it?"

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a policeman put in a weird position

"I don't know," screamed John. It looked like he was about to lose his mind.

"Guys," said Proctor. "Do you mind giving me a moment." Bob and Simmons started to wander off. Proctor watched them. They were taking their time. John leaned in. "What's going on?" he whispered.

"You tell me," said Proctor. John's eyes searched desperately for some understanding. Proctor seized his arms. "You tell me," he repeated.

John dropped his head. "I'm sorry," he murmured. "I slept with them. I slept with them all."

"When?" asked Proctor.

Natural + Life

Large Wall Art Depicting the Human Landscape

Life is a spinning sphere with Joy at one pole and Sadness at the other. Each continuously feeding its pair. Joy flanked by the emotions of Trust on one side, Surprise on the other. Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others. Multiplied and divided, in equal parts. Such that to those from whom it has been subtracted, we must add. Until we are whole.
