Boys, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to debate the idea of augmenting his terrific Fiction Corpus with a story about making english online free; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I have faith in the possibility of upholding English as everybody's second language. I do doubt the pedantic way in which English is taught.Pointer

Polishing a person's proficiency with a language isn't like pioneering a more prodigious quern. A language - a common tongue - isn't merely a tool that you can learn to wield with a greater amount of precision. A living tongue can not be disentangled from the competing values of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching people to recite English is to rob them of its cultural context. A capable teacher must develop a plan for introducing it; the wisest student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a body of writing of various size and consistency. A corpus may contain anything from a book about literature to a bunch of story books. I suffered many a sleepless night developing my "unheroic" Fiction Corpus in order to form a specific type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have framed a million words and I have dissected them, reshaping them - not simply to teach American vocabulary but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to prod that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Help Prevent Self-destructive behaviour With ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

One week after arriving in Europe, I met a woman in the sauna on the ground floor of the large villa she shared with her ex-husband. Four weeks later she was sharing a small rain-soaked tent with me in Vienna, our little gas-fired stove barely capable of boiling a cup of water. It wasn't until we reached Croatia that we decided to invest in a large electric kettle. It was quite the luxury and it made me very happy.

I knew naturism was popular in many parts of Europe and as an artist who had worked on body acceptance for his entire career I was keen on documenting some small part of it. Lo and behold, I found a very important part of it hiding in Poland. Her name was Margo.

I considered myself young and able, and being American I often convinced myself I was more than able. She didn't feel quite so young. Having grown up in Poland, what was and is still considered by many to be a poor country, she had the added burden of not only being disadvantaged but having it held against her. The difference became palpable when I realized I couldn't even properly translate into Polish the very American word, "opportunity." A chance? Sure. An occasion? Why not? An opportunity? Not in the book.

Margo and I spent over 40 days on the road. We started out as basically strangers, but in those 40 days we started listening to each other. We started teaching ourselves how to cooperate. Our journey across Europe may have ended, but our journey towards each other continues. No amount of fear, anger, sadness, disgust or anticipation can stop hope. Slowly but surely, we're learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Boys

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word boys in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word boys, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word boys is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Boys in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

The ball bounced off the plate, which fell down but didn't break. We laughed.

"Wait a minute," said Sapper. "Watch me break it." He propped it against the wall again. This time, from three meters away, Sapper threw the basketball. BOOM-CRACK! went the Plexiglas.

"Congratulations," we said, and ran.

Several days later, we were at her house again. Her father came out, walked right by us without saying a single word, left, came back, and then gave Jesus a dirty look.

The next day, we went back to her house and she said, "I can't play with you boys right now." So we left.

Then, a few days later, we saw Sapper outside her house playing with the girl, so we joined them. But then, the girl left: all of a sudden, she said she couldn't play anymore.

Verses 223-228 from the chapter called Childhood

"They talk like children. Their kitchens are kitchenettes. Their pots are pipkins. Their women aren't women; they're ladykins - they're children. They're little boys and girls who never grow up. They use diminutives to describe the world around them."

We were silent for a while.

Verses 904-905 from the chapter called Bohemia

"What a great story!" said the girls. The boys nodded.

Verse 204 from the chapter called Childhood

The next day, we went back to her house and she said, "I can't play with you boys right now." So we left.

Verse 227 from the chapter called Childhood

I know the lure of success. I feel the pressures of domination. That farmer who sows rye in every field is not a victim. Nor is he some kind of scab. He is a player in a game with no teams, and he deserves no one's pity or awe or respect any more than the rest of us do. Your father always had to win. He would go and cry if he lost - every time. Once, your great-grandfather held a race for the boys and girls. Jesus was distracted for some reason; he missed the starting gun. His first reaction, unfortunately, was to complain. Realizing that the race had already started and wasn't going to be stopped, Jesus went for it. He went as fast as a young boy could, just so he wouldn't have to bear the shame of coming in dead last. He was beaten by a girl. She received first prize and Jesus received second. He was infuriated. Second prize was obviously inferior - too inferior. First prize was an electronic game system. Second prize was a fancy pencil sharpener. Jesus went and cried, not realizing that the prizes were personal: they were designated. Nor did he realize that the girl's family was rich, and his family was, in comparison, very poor.

Usage of Boys in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

When I was a young boy, I denied myself that culture. I think I came out pretty well for it. So don't tell me you were intimidated by everyone else's machismo: that you were pressured into smiling and pretending and going to the prom and hoping you would get laid. Don't tell me how much you had to suffer whenever you tried to get close and all the pretty boys turned away: it was only your own weakness.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 1, Greenery & Land Reform, Section 5, Surrendering the Debate, Paragraph 2, Clauses 2-6

NIKE: Yeah, but the opposite's not true: that's the freaky thing. Because the queen: she holds all the sperm in her little sack, and she can decide which of her babies are boys by holding back the juice. But sometimes, the worker bees develop their own organs, and they become like secondary queens. Now most of their babies are male, but, like, one percent or something become female. Now what's up with that?

Pepsi came back. She untied them. She invited them to the kitchen. "Would you like something to drink? How about tea?"

"I'd love some. Clark, would you like some tea?"

"If it's got sugar in it-I have a headache."

They passed a room. There was a crowd of boys arguing around a television set.

He didn't want to go in. Shephard beckoned. "Remember: play nicely. If you have any problems, I'll be in the next room." Clark was too confused to argue.

Shephard turned to Pepsi. "Why do these boys trust you? What's your secret?"

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

(LESBIAN exits.)

FLETCHER: Judging by the appearance of this parlor, I'm going to have to conclude that this didn't exactly go the way that you had planned. You've got to admit: things could've been a hell of a lot worse. You could be the one on trial for murder instead of that other guy. Not that I mean to disparage your efforts; I admire them. I just think that we should count our blessings and look on the bright side of life. Homo may not be one of the boys, but, in the end, if it makes Mother happy, I'm happy.

– ACT I, lines 1204-1204

LESBIAN: A puritan.

ALICE: Straight-laced.

FLETCHER: A prude.

MS. JACKSON: That's exaggerating it a bit, wouldn't you say?

FLETCHER: Nevertheless, I didn't want old man Menzies thinking I was rooting his daughter-in-law. I certainly wasn't going to admit in open court that a pair of seven-year-old boys could shake me down.

ALICE: I was mugged once.

FLETCHER: What happened?

LESBIAN: Were you hurt?

ALICE: Not physically.

MS. JACKSON: You were threatened.

– ACT I, lines 137-146

ALICE: While we were swimming.

FLETCHER: Looks like Luke is gonna be sleepin' with the flies tonight.

KOKOMO: Don't listen to him. He's a meanie-bo-beanie.

ALICE: Boys will be boys.

FLETCHER: Don't be too patronizing. Girls have to be girls, too.

ALICE: Only when boys are around.

KOKOMO: That's true. When girls are alone, we act like boys.

– ACT I, lines 691-697

LUKE: If you insist. I was out one night at the ole rubbadedub gettin' rotten with me ping-pong mates; bloody bonzer alright 'cause I took a screamer that day 'gainst the ole Banana Benders - who didn't stand Buckley's by the way - too right! So I turn to me tall poppies and say, 'Look, boys: it's my shout; first, allow me to shoot through, piss a slab, maybe buy some dinkum durries to boot. We were hittin' the turps that night so they thought London to a brick that she'd be apples. On me way back from the durry, this yobbo throws a wobbly and spills beer all over me uni. We take it outside. He comes a gutser and falls flat on his face. 'Good on you,' I say. 'Go take a walkabout.' I'm so full and cranky, I sit next to this swagman drinkin' plonk right there on the side of the road. 'I'll be stuffed,' he says. 'Sheila told me I'd see a fight.' I'm like, what sheila? 'Sheila down the road,' says he. 'Take me there,' I say. We go. Sheila reads me palm. She tells me I'll have a ripper year. She holds out her hand and says, 'Fifty quid.' I haven't got a brass razoo. I ask her if she takes credit. 'I knew you would say that,' says she, pullin' out a credit card machine. The next thing you know, there's a bunch of prezzies on me credit card statement. As for the old swaggie and sheila, they weren't within cooee.

– ACT I, line 179

FLETCHER: You assume I lied about that.

MS. JACKSON: I've never heard you accused of anything.

FLETCHER: No one's ever gossiped to you about me or what I do or whom I see?

MS. JACKSON: Why are you being so contrary?

FLETCHER: I'm just surprised you didn't hear anything about me and Mrs. Menzies making out behind St. Barnabas. I guess the McCoy brothers kept their end of the bargain. They extorted five hundred and fifty-two dollars from me in exchange for promising to keep quiet. Cash, by the way, is very hard to come by on this island. What could I do? I couldn't have the usual gossip substantiated by solid testimony from a pair of young, sweet, innocent-looking boys, could I?

Grendel went to the library after school. She found a book about bodies. It had pictures of naked girls in it. One girl looked like her. The others were taller. The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
