Guys, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to debate the potency of extending his massive Fiction Corpus with some real bedtime stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I regard highly the potential of harnessing English as a universal standard. I do doubt the spiritless form in which English is taught.Pointer

Refining a person's handiness with a language isn't like launching a finer porcelain. A language - a spoken tongue - isn't merely a tool that you can teach yourself to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A living tongue can't be disconnected from the shared logic of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching people to recite English is to deprive them of its cultural context. A worthy teacher has to find a method of introducing it; the discerning student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a body of writing of varying scope and consistency. A corpus could contain anything from a book about literature to a lot of fiction books. I watched many moons pass forging my "glorious" Fiction Corpus to form a different class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have framed a million words and I have investigated them, reformulating them - not merely to teach a tongue but to promote the human spirit, and to provoke that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

When I arrived in Europe on the 20th of June, 2011, I had no plan and certainly no idea that by the end of the week I would be practicing photography with a woman I had never met, a naturist who had never before allowed herself to be photographed nude. It was the first of a whole series of firsts for the both of us.

I had come to Europe to document people practicing naturism. Preliminary arrangements had been made to meet with an Egyptian nudist visiting the Continent and there was some kind of Pan-European gathering scheduled to take place in Croatia. I had arranged for an assistant to come along with me to help with anything I needed, but when her passport was stolen the night before we were supposed to leave, my plans went awry. I decided on something less ambitious. I would visit a naturist sauna in the city of Bielsko-Biala, Poland which I had just found on the internet. When I got there, I met Margo.

I considered myself young and able, and being American I often convinced myself I was more than able. She didn't feel quite so young. Having grown up in Poland, what was and is still considered by many to be a poor country, she had the added burden of not only being disadvantaged but having it held against her. The difference became palpable when I realized I couldn't even properly translate into Polish the very American word, "opportunity." A chance? Sure. An occasion? Why not? An opportunity? Not in the book.

Each man grows up with his own kind of poverty. Even if he's got a warm house and plenty of food and a soft bed and plenty of entertainment, there's always something that a man needs. Sometimes he just needs to be listened to, if only by the birds and the trees, but preferably by another man, even if he's an artist from America who isn't very good at listening. By learning how to listen, we learn how to cooperate. By cooperating, we build a better world. In a better world, there are no devils to abuse us. A better world doesn't lend itself to abuse because a better world is populated by people who have learned how to listen.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Guys

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word guys in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word guys, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word guys is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Guys in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"These guys are only here for the day, so: I figured..."

Verse 558 from the chapter called Adolescence

When I got back to Stando's house, I gave him the mellophone and said, "Give this to the army guys once they come." Going back to the Old Town, at five o'clock I attended Mass at the Jesuit church. It was full of old women; there were few men. I was the youngest thing around. How strange, I thought to myself. Does no one among the younger generation appreciate the divine service? Then I noticed something even more strange: the homily was being given by the selfsame Italian Jesuit who had whipped himself on top of Henry the Bearded's tomb just a few months ago. He was being translated by the local priest! I laughed out loud. Was he going to whip himself again? The babičkas gave me a dirty look. I laughed. This time, in the Czech Republic, the Italian Jesuit wasn't going to find many able-bodied volunteers: they were all too old and tired.

Verse 782 from the chapter called Bohemia

We had no trouble slipping by a barricade. The soldiers were very busy; in fact, they were too busy to stop us and ask us important questions like: who the hell are you? and, where are you going? As long as we weren't heading toward them from the Old Town, they weren't going to waste any time or ammunition. The terrorists, on the other hand, must not have gotten the message. Perhaps it was too dark to see the Krupnik's red hood. Perhaps they weren't looking hard enough. Perhaps they didn't even fucking care. It was probably just some idiotic way of convincing a business partner like Baron Cohen-Krupnik that he would be safe in the event that some unexpected development necessitated his entry into dark zones occupied by terrorists. They were shooting at us, and they kept shooting at us until we passed. Perhaps they thought we were some kind of suicide bomber sent by the good guys. That would've been original. But no, we were collaborators. We were businessmen. Nothing was going to stop us from making a killing.

Verse 131 from the chapter called Arms

"What makes you think that?"

"We were jumped by some guys with knives."

"Where?"

Verses 310-312 from the chapter called Vows

"You think these guys can shoot some heroin?" asked Columbus.

Verse 545 from the chapter called Adolescence

Usage of Guys in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

INDIE: I heard from this guy who works with my dad. Ever since he got elected, he's been meeting with all these French guys from the PS. Word must have got around. Apparently, it's where all the Socialists go.

NIKE: Socialists, huh? What is this: some kind of Joy Division?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 9, Respecting Another's Politics, Paragraphs 40-41

Nike soon turned his attention to complaining. He blamed Rothko for calling him. He blamed Luka for acting like an imbecile. But Rothko claimed he only had himself to blame, especially for giving a prostitute, however finely dressed, a thousand Euro. "I got what I paid for," said Nike. "I'm not complaining about that. I was desperate; I had to do something short of raping her. I mean: I had to give her something and that was all I had. But then you guys had to fuck it up for me."

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 23, The Effects of Poverty, Paragraph 2

INDIE: I'm almost convinced it wasn't a club. The thing is: guys had to pay a lot of money and the girls got in for free. And then, you would just hook up, you know - but the thing is: I think those girls were hookers. I don't believe they just came off the streets lookin' for sex.

NIKE: Why not?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 9, Respecting Another's Politics, Paragraphs 26-27

NIKE: I don't know: maybe gay guys think transvestites are queer or something.

LUKA: I don't get it: if you want one of these people, why wouldn't you be gay for wanting them?

NIKE: How am I supposed to know? I don't wanna touch 'em for nothin'.

LUKA: You see: that's because you're straight.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 20, Encountering the Sex Trade, Paragraphs 27-30

ANDY: So these guys, they're like, male versions of their mother.

Shephard asked, "Is it painful?" Clark smirked. A man came into the room. He was holding up a digital video camera. He pointed it at Clark. He watched him on his flipped out viewscreen. He zoomed in. "Don't sweat it," said Shephard. "These guys look like amateurs."

Usage of Guys in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

I guess we were fated, you know. Me and my brothers. We came out first though. Not those other guys. That's why we won. That's why I won. I always said I was the oldest. I never had any proof though, you know. I mean we were probably switched around ten times when we were babies. So who was to say. But I always believed I was the eldest. You know. Now nobody can argue with me.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story based on principles of honor coming straight out of Roman mythology

What was I talking about? Oh yeah. We were holy. The triplets. We Orazio brothers. The Orazi. And the other guys. The Curiazi. We had a mission. To stop the war between our two governments. It was fate. It was what we had to do.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story based on good intentions coming straight out of Roman mythology

Those other guys weren't cowards. People think I hated them. I didn't hate them. They were doing their thing. Their father was a judge. Our father was a capo. You know. Why wouldn't they go into the family business. They were part of the system. The government. If I was one of them I would've done the same thing. Their way of life was to come to our homes and ruin our way of life. It was a war.

– from “The Testament of Publio Orazio,” a horror story based on good intentions coming straight out of Roman mythology

A small but considerable uproar followed reports of the accident. Some people unfairly blamed the drivers. Most blamed the postal service and the other guys for not adequately training their men. A handful blamed the professor. Everybody tried to blame the town. For the first time in a while it seemed like the town actually hadn't done anything wrong. No private person or business was willing to pay for sidewalks, with the one exception being the post office. Something Postmaster Steve pointed out rather tactlessly one day in the local paper.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story to teach children about grown-up stuff that may or may not work

"That's it," said the captain. "I'm taking Proctor to the station. I'll have five guys watching him at once. We can't possibly have five traitors."

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
