Terrorists, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is poring over the possibility of supplementing his ponderous Fiction Corpus with yet another fiction book; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the possibility of employing English as a worldwide language. I do doubt the lumbering recipe by which English is presented for study.Pointer

Reinforcing a person's skill with a language isn't like introducing a sharper arrowhead. A language - a spoken language - is not merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to employ with a greater amount of precision. A common tongue can not be severed from the shared logic of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a pupil recite English is to rob her of its cultural context. A worthy educator must have a blueprint for introducing it; the perceptive pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language based on a particular corpus, a set of written language of various size and consistency. They may include anything from a book about literature to a bunch of science fiction books. I lost many a night developing my "sizeable" Fiction Corpus in order to form a precise class of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have fashioned a million words and I have broken them down, reframing them - not simply to teach an American tongue but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to encourage that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Terrorists

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word terrorists in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word terrorists, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word terrorists is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Terrorists in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"I think we're in luck. Look," said Jesus, "these seventeen fuel sales correspond with the seventeen officially scheduled border crossings. These three don't, but the third one took place long after we had started our resistance; the first one took place before the terrorists showed up in Wroclaw; and the second one took place a few days before we found the weapons. I think that's a safe bet."

Verse 38 from the chapter called Security

This is not to say that Jesus didn't love his enemies. He adored them. He admired their courage, respected their zeal. He placed himself among them. He didn't hide behind armored personnel carriers. He didn't use artillery to liquidate buildings. The rockets he had he rarely used. Jesus had all the time in the world. He waited when he felt like he should. He walked into a building when he wanted it. He wasn't afraid of putting himself into a body bag. He wasn't afraid of death from terrorists.

Verse 4 from the chapter called Bohemia

Most people wrote him off as a crazy man. Others were more skeptical: they wondered what a Martian man was doing on Earth collaborating with terrorists. People said: he's a criminal: he escaped from Mars and joined up with pirates and all the other dispossessed and frustrated scumbags in outer space - what do you think he wants? Money, money, money! What do you think drives him? His own greed! Spite! His diabolical schemes for grabbing power and fifty wives like all the other rich pirates.

What about this Zeus fellow?

Verses 679-680 from the chapter called Adolescence

When the terrorists invaded Poland, they proved just as practical as the Germans. They brought machine guns, grenades, mortars, and assault rifles. They brought swords for beheading hostages, not for any romantic reason, but because they wouldn't have to waste ammunition that way (they didn't bring enough of it). In fact, they didn't bring anything with them from space: that would've been impossible. They had to buy everything they needed on location. In Poland, in the city of Wroclaw, one of their main suppliers happened to be none other than Baron Cohen-Krupnik, the man who, once upon a time, had sold Jesus silk stockings in bulk every Monday at eight o'clock in the morning. Heroin was a rather lucrative trade in peacetime; in times of war, however, arms were more like it.

Verse 9 from the chapter called Arms

One day, not long before the terrorists attacked Poland, Lucius and Columbus brought two guests into Jesus's apartment. One was a Krupnik. The other was soon to be his brother-in-law. He was an Irishman. Columbus had met the Krupnik at some dance club in Wroclaw: the Rathaus Club, named after the German word for Town Hall, seeing as how the club was located in Wroclaw's Town Square, not far from the actual Town Hall, and apparently the club catered to a more high-class clientele - hence the German name. The club was owned by Leonard Cohen-Krupnik and was probably always full of Krupniks and since Columbus had been spinning there one night, the two met. Columbus was spinning that night at a local club in Treblinka. Having invited his new Krupnik friend (who had brought along his future brother-in-law), Columbus extended his invitation to Jesus, but Jesus had other plans.

Usage of Terrorists in Tsiga Tsiga Tsiga

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Shephard reached the top. He smiled. Turning to Clark, he said, "The highway-it's not far." He glanced at the dimples his feet had left in the sand. There were identical marks in the crawlspace. They led around the dugout. Shephard stared at them. He whispered, "Uh-oh."

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring terrorists who you can root for

They boarded another bus. Shephard watched the barren landscape unfold. It was comforting to know there was no lack of rock and sand. He looked to the south. The Kunlun mountains stood like craggy knuckles. They stretched endlessly eastward. Every year, thought Shephard, the sun would melt snow from their peaks. The water would trickle into the valley. It would seep its way unseen across the desert. It would reach the main river. It would be hemmed in by the Tian Shan mountains. It would swing back into the desert. In time, it would end up on the snowy peaks once again.

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring terrorists who you can root for

Shephard huffed. He clenched his teeth. He said, "Clark, you sure as hell know how to ruin my day."

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring terrorists who you can root for

Somebody fired. The mirror cracked. They were shooting at him. Shephard leaned to the left. Tsiga-tsiga-tsiga! Wisps of sand shot into the air. They were firing sub-machine guns. Shephard went over a ridge. The mosque's towers gleamed in the distance. He was close.

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
