Doctors, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to study the viability of extending his considerable Fiction Corpus with a coffee table book about new york art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I can't reject the soundness of enacting English as an international language for the world. I do question the unspectacular methodology by which the English language is taught.Pointer

Polishing a person's familiarity with a language isn't like introducing a stronger wheelbarrow. A language - a living language - isn't merely an instrument that you can learn to wield with greater amounts of precision. A common language can't be split from the philosophical currents of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a student recite English is to deprive her of its cultural context. A capable educator must have a strategy for introducing it; the wisest pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language on the basis of a specific corpus, a body of writing of various size and consistency. This corpus may include anything from a book about literature to some really short fiction stories. I lost many a sleepless night developing my "gallant" Fiction Corpus in order to form a precise genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have prepared a million words and I have reduced them, reframing them - not simply to teach a tongue but to be an advocate for the human spirit, and to provoke that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

My plane touched down in Poland on June 20th. A month later I was in Austria. Two days later, Slovenia. The next day, Croatia. A week later, Italy. The next day, Switzerland. The next day, France. The next day, Germany. The next day, Belgium. The next day, Holland. All with a woman I had met my first weekend on the Continent.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

I was American. Freshly arrived in Europe and the new owner of a '97 Ford Escort made in Germany. The only thing I had to complain about was the fact that the owner's manual was in German. She was from Poland, and a German-language owner's manual for a car bought in Poland wasn't the only thing she had to complain about. Something as small as that didn't even register.

Do unto others as you would have done unto you. But how to judge what we would want done to us if we've never been in somebody else's shoes? If we've never been abandoned by our mother, how do we treat somebody who has? Somebody who seems to constantly suffer the repurcussions of it? Margo and I had 46 days and 6,000 miles to try on each other's shoes. We had one car and one tent in which to hear each other's words. We learned to cooperate. We started learning how to listen.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Doctors

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word doctors in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word doctors, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word doctors is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Definition of DoctorsMargo on a trampoline

Doctors are usually people who find it hard to admit either that they don't know something or that they're wrong and who are led to believe by an endless stream of clients looking for answers that they know more about your body than you do, which isn't necessarily wrong but can be extremely aggravating when it is.

Usage of Doctors in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"Alright," said Jesus. "We'll do it. Let's just go back to Sand Island first: look at the map. We'll send the pastor down to the hospital - you know: the one down by the Cathedral - he'll bring us back some good doctors."

Verse 471 from the chapter called Arms

"You're just like everybody else: my father, the doctors - they all tell me the same things, but they don't know me. They don't know what it's like. They can't help."

Verse 634 from the chapter called Bohemia

"Doctors are helpless, I agree. The choice is up to you."

Verse 635 from the chapter called Bohemia

The courts balked: whether by citing lack of competence or jurisdiction, or by hiding behind inherent technical impossibilities or certain philosophical ambiguities, they ultimately refused your grandfather his precious victories. Did he care? No: "It's for the principle," he said. "If the most disgusting people on Earth can do it, why can't I? Those people get loads and loads of money just because their doctors didn't say: 'Look: your kid's gonna have Down syndrome: better have an abortion.' If the most vile parents on the planet can stand before a judge and claim 'wrongful life' in the case of their retarded children, why can't I ask for help? Sooner or later, someone's gonna crack: I can feel it. You just have to get blue enough."

Verse 57 from the chapter called Adolescence

Usage of Doctors in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I had another dream last night, by the way. I suppose I've got plenty of time to describe it to you. It begins in the hospital, in a room not unlike the one in which I find myself. But, of course, in the dream, it seemed much more spacious. It was crowded with people, most of which I didn't recognize. Except for Rothko, they were all doctors and police officers. They were all very interested in seeing the patient: to see whether his condition was really improved - that is to say, whether all his members were functioning appropriately.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 8, Being a Victim, Paragraph 1

I called you and shared with you the terrible news after he fell into his coma - but you don't know what the doctors have said. There has been no improvement in Albert's condition, of course. There is no disputing the imminence of the end, but they have said there is a chance that Albert will wake before he dies, and Indiana is compelled: she must hold a constant vigil - except that she cannot do so by herself, and I have offered my own services; so I write to you today from his bedside, his quiet bedside, where I can peacefully contemplate his impassive body and the almost dream-like events of the past few days.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 2, Poetics, Paragraph 4, Clauses 1-3

Only after the police left and the doctors went about their business did Rothko, finally, have enough courage to stray within range. But by then, Nike had calmed himself down. Or, perhaps, it wasn't a matter of calming down: perhaps he had been performing for the benefit of those doctors. They were going to decide when and if he were ready for release, and Nike was in quite a hurry. But, nevertheless, I'm sure he was performing especially for the police: he probably thought he had something to prove. At the very least, he had to make a proper show for that Christian fellow. He couldn't help but notice the irony that Christian was now working for him.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 8, Being a Victim, Paragraph 3

Life is a spinning sphere with Joy at one pole and Sadness at the other. Each continuously feeding its pair. Joy flanked by the emotions of Trust on one side, Surprise on the other. Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others.
