Friends, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is contemplating the viability of enhancing his gargantuan Fiction Corpus with a coffee table book on abstract wall art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I have faith in the potential of enacting English as a universal standard. I don't accept the enervatingly inanimate design by which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Perfecting a person's expertise with a language isn't like developing a stronger rope. A language - a common tongue - is not merely a tool that you can learn to manipulate with a greater amount of precision. A language can't be isolated from the professed knowledge of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to cheat him out of its cultural context. A capable teacher must have a blueprint for introducing it; the insightful pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words on the basis of a specific corpus, a body of writing of varying size and consistency. A corpus may contain anything from a book about literature to some real ghost stories. I watched many nights pass creating my "stately" Fiction Corpus in order to form a special kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have fashioned a million words and I have tabulated them, reformulating them - not just to teach an American language but to defend the human soul, and to encourage that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

When I arrived in Europe on the 20th of June, 2011, I had no plan and certainly no idea that by the end of the week I would be practicing photography with a woman I had never met, a naturist who had never before allowed herself to be photographed nude. It was the first of a whole series of firsts for the both of us.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

I was from America, land of the free...home of the brave. She carried the weight of Old Europe...domestic and religious poverties...stifled creativity. Anger. Sadness. Yearning.

I've never gone hungry without deserving it. I've never been systemically beaten by a parent. I've never been fondled by a priest. That doesn't mean I can't listen to somebody who has had to experience such abuse and it doesn't mean I can't try to understand. Margo and I traveled 6,000 miles together. We slept in the same tent. We had to listen to each other. A person shouldn't need 6,000 miles to do it. We should be able to listen to each other just because we want to. We should've been taught to do it. If we haven't been taught, we should be learning how to do it and learning fast.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Friends

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word friends in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word friends, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word friends is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Friends in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"No," she said.

"Why not?"

"That's stupid."

"Why is that stupid?"

"I don't want to do that."

"What's wrong with singing songs?"

"They're stupid songs."

"Not all of them are stupid."

"I don't want to do it."

"Why not? Your friends are gonna laugh at you?"

Verses 381-390 from the chapter called Adolescence

Later that day, your father was called to the principal's office. In the presence of his mother, he was angrily accused of lying, endangering his own health and encouraging others to do so. He was threatened with expulsion. His mother cried; Jesus rebuked her. He felt sorry for the friend or friends who had betrayed him. He was only trying to liberate his friends, not to hurt them. That day, among the shouts of his principal, your father learned the most important lesson he would ever learn in school: mental and physical prowess may grant one fame, or infamy, but is quite incapable of transferring authority away from those who have it.

Verse 137 from the chapter called Childhood

Jesus's respect and his growing wealth of knowledge put aside, there was oftentimes very little that separated him from the various hooligans who populated Poland. More than once I can remember times when, after heavy bouts of drinking, Jesus and his friends would emerge from their latest club, and, walking down the street, would bump into their next victim. One time, after having started drinking at three in the afternoon, we were passing the local pharmacy in Treblinka. It was around eight o'clock in the evening; the pharmacist was just locking up. I stopped and said, "Good evening."

Verse 337 from the chapter called Adolescence

In those days, Jesus had very little money. His father's mother was dead. With her, the retirement pension died. If only she had had fewer friends, or if Jesus's uncle hadn't become a complete waste of time and breath, they could've tried committing pension fraud. As it was, Jesus's father kept selling books and eating heroin and Jesus began trying to sell furniture for food.

Verse 355 from the chapter called Adolescence

By that point, there was very little information to be had. Nevertheless, as the second man at the crime scene, after the landlord, your father was seriously tempted to steal evidence. He decided against it. Stalin had complete access to the CBS crime lab, the CBS being Poland's central investigative bureau, and Jesus didn't have any friends there on the inside nor did he want to have to bribe anyone. Lab results were available to anyone in law enforcement anyway, so Jesus took some photographs and left before the cops came. Later on, Stalin went to the CBS lab and got the results. The forensic evidence indicated without a doubt that the bullets came from a Russian-made weapon, which didn't necessary mean that the perpetrator or perpetrators were Russian, but, then again, who else would be using a Russian-made weapon?

Verse 209 from the chapter called Security

ANDY: Yes, for the time being, but really I'm just visiting.

NIKE: Hey, how long are you staying?

ANDY: I don't know.

LUKA: You speak French, yes?

ANDY: No, not really - not very well.

LUKA: But you are from Jersey.

Unfortunately, many of her friends were not so sure of their own talents, and, as it turned out, not one of them signed up for the auction.

He even fought to secure legislation protecting the copyright of an artist. And it came as a great surprise to learn that he was very involved with the theatre. I knew that his first great painting was a scene from a contemporary farce, but the extent of the theatre's influence on him was gradually revealed to me and I was dumbfounded. He was even friends with the famous Mr. Garrick, and all this was greatly appreciated by my companions. This exploration of all the influences over Mr. Hogarth comprised the bulk of the lecture, and it extended to include not only the theatre, but also the painter's experience of marriage.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 12, Private Clubs, Paragraph 4, Clauses 5-12

But that was only because he sat next to her in English class, and everybody knew that he really had no serious claim. However, it was true that he had tallied a few genuine moments. But those weren't so difficult to come by. It was easy to get Luka to read something, and then she would have to take out her glasses. But the problem was that she would look down before she put them on, and then she would take them off before she looked up. So you weren't really spending any serious time. Now I realized this, and I thought of a plan to achieve total victory. We were sitting on the beach, and I was waiting for the best opportunity. A few of our friends were playing with a ball in the water. I was waiting for my cousin to leave me alone with Luca; she was definitely not interested in playing ball, and I, consequently, was suffering from a bout of cramps. Finally, my cousin was compelled to go, and I immediately began a conversation about school and schoolteachers and classroom behavior, et cetera.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 1, The First Day, Part 1, Victory & Calendar Reform, Section 8, Financial Instruments, Paragraph 18, Clauses 5-16

NIKE: You don't have to trust anybody, unless you're thinking about distributing some product.

ANDY: Well, what's the product?

NIKE: Mead.

ANDY: Mead?

NIKE: Spiced and unspiced, even sparkling.

ANDY: Mead?

NIKE: That's right.

ANDY: Spiced mead?

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

"What would you like to drink?" Shephard would ask her. "Kumis or camel's milk?"

The woman would shake her head. "What's the kumis?"

"Fermented mare's milk."

"I'll have the water."

"Are you sure? It's from the tap."

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring a man without a clue

At the last moment, blond hair stepped onto the bus. The long bangs hid the owner's face. Shrouded by the partition, they carefully climbed the next step behind another smarmy salesman. The length of the hair revealed itself. It flowed past the creature's shoulders. Shephard clenched his fists. It had to be a woman. It didn't matter if she were ugly. As long as she weren't on the wrong bus, he wouldn't have to kill himself.

Usage of Friends in Sorry Ms. Jackson

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

FLETCHER: There is a house on Norfolk that no longer stands. Its eaves of pine were reduced to ash. Its worthy frame that I helped build collapsed in a huge fury of smoke and fire that I helped start. I watched it burning from the top of Mount Pitt. I was too ashamed to go any closer. I was there in the room the night my father planned that terrible justice with his friends. I heard them goading each other into teaching their fellow man not to cooperate with the Australian government. It was madness I heard from their lips. They were the drunken lips of dogs waiting to pounce. I said nothing. I did nothing to stop them. When the police came, I lied and said I knew nothing. I climbed Mount Pitt out of morbid curiosity to see what I had wrought. That image of the house whose beams I placed - whose trusses I tied - in the distance - engulfed in flames - is seared upon my mind. I did nothing to stop it. Do you know how sorry I am? If I told you that somebody died in that fire, would it be in your power to forgive me?

– ACT II, line 183

FLETCHER: Oh, marriage! Where would man be without thy warm bondage? Those who fear the rope will never know the pleasure of being tied up: of pushing with all one's might only to stand still. It is a perverse joy, indeed, to take the plunge through the trapdoor: to hear one's soul snapping in two, pushing one's heart into one's throat: to say the words, 'I do.' To wed and then to bed - how old-fashioned an order! One cannot help but desire permanence in such an ever-changing world. To oppose it, lashed to a rock, feeling its weight crush one's spirit, may be a Promethean punishment best reserved for the noble. It is no wonder that only the force of custom and law kept so many together for so long. Matrimony is not for the faint of heart. So watch out, you concubines and concubinaries - you cohabitants and live-in friends: both cataracts and calm pools await you, but no peace at that river's end: just the wide, gaping maw of dissoluteness and abandon: the ocean of human desire, with nothing to do but sink. So swim home, like salmon, and enjoy rest: the comfort you get from being tied up. My prayers were answered: I am a man again - and soon to be more: a husband. Wish me luck, for the night is still young, and many acts of husbandry await me.

– ACT II, line 550

LUKE: What's the difference between the two?

MS. JACKSON: Bounty families are descendant from the original Bounty mutineers, who settled on Pitcairn Island-

FLETCHER: With their Tahitian consorts. I'm sorry. I meant their Tahitian wives. And their Tahitian slaves. I mean, their male Tahitian friends.

MS. JACKSON: The Pitcairner families are descendant-

FLETCHER: From three adventurers - to be more precise, from two ack-willy whalers and a soldier-of-fortune.

LUKE: That's a ridgy-didge pedigree. Too right!

FLETCHER: It gets better. Being a direct descendant of my namesake, Fletcher Christian, the illustrious chief of the mutiny on the Bounty, I am therefore descendant from the ancient rulers of the Isle of Man.

LUKE: A reg'lar Pommy!

FLETCHER: My father's mother was a Quintal. That means half of him is descendant from a drunken scoundrel who set his ship on fire, drove his wife to suicide, and threatened to kill the entire island population. That's not the side of the story we like to tell. We prefer the story of how John Jackson turned to Christianity and taught his children to read and write. Jackson, I'll have you know, was a Christian before he became a Jackson. He changed his name the moment the British rediscovered the island. My mother admires his cowardice so much, she did the same thing.

– ACT I, lines 93-101

FLETCHER: I never did.

ALICE: Good for you. It must have been awful being drawn into it like that. I couldn't imagine.

FLETCHER: It's never happened to you?

ALICE: I've only had sex with three people.

FLETCHER: At once?

ALICE: I mean my husband and my first two boyfriends.

FLETCHER: You had sex with your boyfriends?

ALICE: I thought I was in love. I couldn't help it either.

FLETCHER: I almost had sex with three people. I've never had a girlfriend.

ALICE: Never?

Usage of Friends in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Steve O started to wonder what it would've been like being more than friends. One day, in the shower, staring at a soapy finger, he decided to find out. Thus was discovered Steve O's new cure for headaches. As is the case with many self-medicating patients, Steve O over-prescribed.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that doesn't pretend to be important, but what you make of it is up to you

Adam was gay. The intimacy of his relationship with Steve O was sending him the wrong signals. Especially when Steve O was really drunk and wielding his naked balls like a pair of nunchunks. Adam decided to try respectfully to step things up. The results were disastrous. As soon as Steve O realized what Adam's hand was doing and where his lips were, he basically borrowed the strength of ten men to heave him up and out of the room. The friendship suffered.

– from “A Finger Up The Bum,” a gay fiction story that isn't trying to win an award, but what you make of it is up to you

I had to go. The attack on Barack was the last straw. The news claimed all the attacks were coming from one bad boxing club. It couldn't have been true. I was seeing skinheads on every street corner. I begged my friends at the university to help. I just wanted to leave the city. By the end of the week I was staying at a friend's dacha. In the middle of winter. With no heat. I had to borrow a small furnace and forage for wood on my own. I was happy. I was safe.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that represents things that have actually happened, though the details are fictional

I don't know who to thank for my fate. I know God has a lot to do with it. As does Putin. And my own imagination. And the many friends of mine at university. And Barack. And Obama. And Khalifa.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that describes what certain people go through, though hopefully you're not one of them

My friends kept telling me I was crazy. They said no matter how bad it is in the city at least I have friends. In the village I would have nobody. It was true. I didn't argue. I didn't want them to know what was on my mind. I was thinking what good are friends if they can't protect you. I knew it wasn't their fault.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story that describes life on this planet, though hopefully we can change
