Most People, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the words from all angles...

Michal is kicking around the idea of augmenting his measly Fiction Corpus with a history of narrative non fiction; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't question the practicality of exploiting English as everyone's second language. I don't regard highly the altogether ordinary plan by which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Reenforcing one's expertise with a language isn't like creating a stronger steel. A language - a spoken language - is not just a tool that you can learn to manipulate with greater amounts of precision. A common language can not be unyoked from the competing values of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a pupil recite English is to rob him of its cultural context. A worthy educator must have a blueprint for introducing it; the wisest pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe words on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of written works of varying size and consistency. They can include everything from a book about literature to a lot of novels. I watched many nights pass laboring on my "petty" Fiction Corpus to form a new genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have deconstructed them, reshaping them - not merely to teach the English tongue but to defend the human spirit, and to encourage that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

My plane touched down in Poland on June 20th. A month later I was in Austria. Two days later, Slovenia. The next day, Croatia. A week later, Italy. The next day, Switzerland. The next day, France. The next day, Germany. The next day, Belgium. The next day, Holland. All with a woman I had met my first weekend on the Continent.

I had come to Europe to document people practicing naturism. Preliminary arrangements had been made to meet with an Egyptian nudist visiting the Continent and there was some kind of Pan-European gathering scheduled to take place in Croatia. I had arranged for an assistant to come along with me to help with anything I needed, but when her passport was stolen the night before we were supposed to leave, my plans went awry. I decided on something less ambitious. I would visit a naturist sauna in the city of Bielsko-Biala, Poland which I had just found on the internet. When I got there, I met Margo.

I had grown up in America. Land of opportunity. I came of age in the booming 90s when everything was possible. She had grown up in Poland. She had come of age at a time when the Soviets were making sure that there wasn't even anything to eat in the country. I couldn't even properly translate the word "opportunity" into Polish.

I've never been married. I've never been divorced. I've never had kids. I've never lost my kids. That doesn't mean I can't try to understand somebody who has. By listening to Margo during our trip across Europe I started to consider her needs as if they were my own. I may not have been in a position to satisfy all of those needs, but I was able to shut up and put my own needs aside if I had to for at least 6,000 miles. We all need to be listened to and it is the one need that we all have a duty to satisfy. When somebody prays to another human, as a human you have a duty to listen. Humanity needs to start teaching itself that skill.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the words Most People

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the words most people in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the words most people, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the words most people are located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting their cultural power.

Definition of Most PeopleMargo on a trampoline

Most People are a fictitious group of people that you refer to when you're trying to describe what is normal. This group is often fetishized to mean normal people. It otherwise describes a statistical plurality among humans.

Usage of Most People in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"That's good," she said. "I'm glad you read. Most people don't do that."

Verse 541 from the chapter called Bohemia

Blaming America was difficult. For the simple-minded, it was easy, but most people were conflicted. America was a beautiful country; it had suffered much, but who hadn't? Besides, Americans were in space, in stations orbiting around the Earth; America was on the moon, racing China for the best pieces of real estate. Even though half their country was gone, they were still on top! They were in orbit around the Earth! American soil filled the stratosphere, casting its shadow across the globe: and they were above it! They couldn't care less. To them, the damage was done. Yellowstone exploded - thank you very much, now go and help yourself.

Verse 82 from the chapter called Childhood

"It was good," said Sapper. "The priest came to the house, which he never does anymore - but he loved your mother, so he came. They dropped your mother over the doorsill three times; she said good-bye to her family home. Then we processed. Not all of us did: most people drove, but your grandmother insisted on processing from the house to the church, and then from the church to the cemetery, which the priest didn't want to do - but, that's how your mother wanted it, she said. The problem was: to get to the church, you have to take the highway, which somebody said you would have to get a permit for. But your grandmother said, 'Forget about it: I'm not getting any permit. Who needs a permit to walk my daughter's coffin to her grave?' So the priest said, 'Fine: do what you want.' When we left the house, he didn't walk: he hopped into his car. Those of us who did walk wailed; we sang death songs. Nothing would've been more beautiful except for the traffic. Those tractor-trailers were piling up behind us, not to mention all the other impatient people. Whenever anyone successfully passed us, you couldn't hear the next verse. Those tractor-trailers: whenever they shifted by, they drowned us out completely. Fumes were everywhere, blowing in our faces. We had trouble singing; it was difficult to breath."

Verse 276 from the chapter called Adolescence

It was under these circumstances that the national government extended and modified substantially its contract with SECURITA. The security firm had been hired by the Ministry of Defense to supplement its border guard, which, when terrorists appeared in Germany, was deployed along Poland's western frontier by adding units withdrawn from the southwestern border shared with the Czech Republic. This move had been severely criticized and very much resented by most people not in charge of national security, but, considering that terrorists and terrorism were responsible (or, at least, held responsible) for just about everything that happened, there wasn't much that anyone could do to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that this new and startling development (which was the privatization of national defense) was not necessary or, at least, justified. Private security firms had always been popular among the elite - why shouldn't national governments be able to take advantage of their highly trained professionals? especially since these were difficult times - made even more difficult by coal trafficking.

Verse 26 from the chapter called Security

"How did you know this is nineteenth century?"

"You're surprised?" I asked.

"Most people don't know that."

"I read books," I said.

Usage of Most People in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

NIKE: Alright: well most people credit the man for beginning the fall of Communism, seeing as how the secret denunciation of Stalin's 'cult of personality' was by no means secret for long, and such frankness on the part of someone who actually participated in purges and liquidations, and the current leader of the party no less: it came as a shock to most people, no matter how incompletely or euphemistically the terror was described.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 27, Penetration, Paragraph 99, Clause 1

I was unsure how to reply, but I trusted my judgment and proceeded cautiously, saying to Macy: "Children, if not completely necessary, are at least basic to the concept of marriage. So yes, I think it made them sad. If Hogarth had been really smart, he wouldn't have eloped with her until she was pregnant; that's what most people did back then. As for me, I have no reason to elope. Who needs to elope these days? Who could present such a problem to one's family? People are too progressive these days to be bothered. The principle of personal autonomy has trumped all other virtues. What potential suitor could possibly provoke such resentment? It is perfectly preposterous; I would be ridiculed if I tried."

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Clark tied the sleeve to the branch with an awkward solemnity. He looked ridiculous with one sleeve.

Shephard reached into his pants. He tore off a square of fabric from his boxer shorts. He pinned it onto the branch.

The policeman didn't want to stick out. Ripping the manufacturer's tag from his tie, he wrapped it around the branch and knotted it.

Back at the mosque, Shephard had Clark call the hotel. Coke was still waiting in the lobby. "Finally," he said. "It's time and a half for making me wait."

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story set in a place most people haven't heard of

"Clark," said Shephard. "Do you mind watching TV for a while? I have something I'd like to discuss with this young, beautiful woman. I promise I won't be long." Clark squinted. He didn't want to go in. Shephard beckoned. "Remember: play nicely. If you have any problems, I'll be in the next room." Clark was too confused to argue.

Shephard turned to Pepsi. "Why do these boys trust you? What's your secret?"

Large Wall Art Depicting the Human Landscape

Life is a spinning sphere with Joy at one pole and Sadness at the other. Each continuously feeding its pair. Joy flanked by the emotions of Trust on one side, Surprise on the other. Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others. Multiplied and divided, in equal parts. Such that to those from whom it has been subtracted, we must add. Until we are whole.
