Soldiers, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is thinking over the prospect of amplifying his run-of-the-mill Fiction Corpus with some really short funny stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the soundness of using English as a worldwide lingua franca. I do doubt the vapid model by which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Improving one's proficiency with a language isn't like producing a safer bridge. A language - a living tongue - isn't merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to exploit with greater amounts of precision. A living tongue can't be cleaved from the prevailing culture of a recognized nation of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a student to recite English is to rob him of its cultural context. A capable teacher has to find a way to introduce it; the smartest pupil goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe words on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of written language of various size and consistency. A corpus can contain anything from a book about literature to a whole collection of top fiction novels. I suffered many a sleepless night laboring on my "impressive" Fiction Corpus to form a new kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have fashioned a million words and I have reduced them, reformulating them - not simply to teach an American tongue but to reveal the human soul, and to encourage that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Soldiers

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word soldiers in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word soldiers, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word soldiers is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Soldiers in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Terrorism was also big. The very same year that Jesus's mother died, some crazy American blew up a U.S. government space station, killing one hundred and sixty-nine people. Two years earlier, some crazy pirate tried to blow up the Interplanetary Trade Center. Six people died; a thousand more were injured. He claimed his intention was to kill as many as two hundred and fifty thousand Americans by dislodging one of the two great modules that - back in those days - made up the bulk of the orbiting Center. Four years later, the U.S. government claimed that it was A-ron workers that had organized a bomb attack on one of their military bases in outer space the previous year, which had killed a total of nineteen soldiers, wounding more than five hundred.

Verse 310 from the chapter called Adolescence

Now, if Jesus had been completely guileless, instead of assuming that victory was his for the taking, he would've asked your mother, considering the encroaching darkness, whether she wanted to return as soon as possible to the high school to pitch her tent (sound advice) or go with him to Hell's Ditch. Knowing your mother, she probably would've said Hell's Ditch anyway (with a name like that, she would've smiled - if not devilishly, then, at least, with knowing embarrassment), but that's beside the point. We shall never know what your mother would've said because Jesus never bothered to ask. Nor did he decide to take the quickest way to Hell's Ditch (Home Army Road) or the second quickest way (the road to Wroclaw), but (considering the encroaching darkness) passing both those streets and going down Peace Defenders' Road, past the Town Park, past the Sanitation Inspector's Office, past the Regional Court, where, several months ago, Jesus had his first and only hearing, and, turning onto Church Road, going past the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul, looking briefly down Linden Flower Road, where, not so long ago, Jesus jumped the Krupnik and started this whole dirty affair, he went through the apartment blocks, crossed Soldiers' of September Street, and, going down Flower Road and turning right on Garden Street, took the absolute longest way to Hell's Ditch from the Sanitarium which could still be called a way.

Verse 598 from the chapter called Security

We had no trouble slipping by a barricade. The soldiers were very busy; in fact, they were too busy to stop us and ask us important questions like: who the hell are you? and, where are you going? As long as we weren't heading toward them from the Old Town, they weren't going to waste any time or ammunition. The terrorists, on the other hand, must not have gotten the message. Perhaps it was too dark to see the Krupnik's red hood. Perhaps they weren't looking hard enough. Perhaps they didn't even fucking care. It was probably just some idiotic way of convincing a business partner like Baron Cohen-Krupnik that he would be safe in the event that some unexpected development necessitated his entry into dark zones occupied by terrorists. They were shooting at us, and they kept shooting at us until we passed. Perhaps they thought we were some kind of suicide bomber sent by the good guys. That would've been original. But no, we were collaborators. We were businessmen. Nothing was going to stop us from making a killing.

Verse 131 from the chapter called Arms

We made a whole semicircle - just like your father would do some twenty years later along the edge of the Hellas Plain, when, after smashing those members of his brigade who refused to follow him and facing down his son (Your brother) on the heights near his heliographic station, he returned to the great and yet unvanquished city of Centropolis in his air-cushion machine, and, wending his way through the ranks of Coalition soldiers who, still under the command of your grandfather, Hitler Panzer-Tank, were still relentlessly attacking the great Julius, leader of the Miners' Resistance, and who, not knowing that your father was still alive, were unaware that he could possibly have taken his air-cushion machine back from the hands of his son, he slipped right by them, floating in a wide semicircle around to the southeast side of Centropolis, where, thanks to human determination (and supplies from Zeus, the machine-god), the soldiers defending the corner, as tired and thirsty as they must have been, were expecting him.

Verse 127 from the chapter called Arms

Jesus didn't recognize any of this at the time - all he saw was weaponry: multitudes and multitudes of guns, ordnance, and ammunition locked away into his uncle's back room. Jesus's ability to distinguish between rifle cartridges and low-caliber, high-velocity rounds came later, after he had freed fifty Polish soldiers from terrorist captivity and had led them and others in a valiant assault on the Old Town, reclaiming it from the bloody hands of terrorist pirates and their traitorous collaborators. Jesus had no intention of doing that at the time; in fact, he had no idea that the Old Town was in the hands of bloody terrorist pirates. He had no idea that, first, he was going to become one of their traitorous collaborators.

On each side, soldiers wondered what was going on. It seemed as though Braccio might beat the odds. The astrologers were wrong. The omens were false. Chivalry would actually triumph. It was too good to be true. Braccio was wounded. His knights panicked. Their leader was thrown from his horse. The battle was lost.

Clark wondered what made Shephard so eager to get moving. He would have expected him to love wasting time at the hotel. He decided not to jinx it by asking him. On the way to Hotan, the bus driver put on a Turkic movie. Shephard watched. The plot was hard to follow. There was an old man. He was mourning. There were soldiers pushing people around. A young woman danced with what may have been her husband. The husband may have been the old man's son. It seemed the son was killed at some point by soldiers.

LUKE: I don't want to be the one spillin' secrets, but you might as well know. It all started when her grandmother was raped by the Japanese on Western Samoa.

LESBIAN: During the war?

LUKE: Whenever it was that they occupied the island.

LESBIAN: The Japanese never occupied Western Samoa. They did have plans to invade, but Midway changed all that. They tried to capture Port Moresby instead. Unfortunately for them, what they thought was a motor track turned out to be a mule trail, one which no Australian had dared traverse in over twenty years. They say the Japanese soldiers eventually turned to cannibalism. I thought about doing the hike myself. Five days is a bit much. The dry season was ending. I decided against it.

LUKE: Are you saying the Japanese never invaded Western Samoa?

LESBIAN: I was on Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands. That was as far as they got. You must be confused.

LUKE: I'm not confused; I'm sheepish. It wouldn't be the first time.

LESBIAN: The music box is missing. It looks as though another heirloom's been stolen.

LUKE: I'm not the one who took it: that's for sure. See you at the airport, mate.

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
