Cop, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is poring over the possibility of extending his sensational Fiction Corpus with a book about science fiction classics; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I regard highly the viability of promulgating English as the world's second language. I do reject the unsurprising steps through which the English tongue is taught.Pointer

Perfecting one's skillfulness with a language isn't like producing a brighter lantern. A language - a spoken language - isn't merely a tool that you can learn to use with greater amounts of precision. A common tongue can't be segmented from the shared logic of a tribe of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to deprive her of its cultural context. A good educator must find a way to introduce it; the prudent student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe words based on a particular corpus, a body of writing of various size and consistency. This corpus might include anything from a book about literature to a lot of stories. I watched many nights pass developing my "ponderous" Fiction Corpus in order to form a different sort of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drafted a million words and I have codified them, reformulating them - not merely to teach a language but to reveal the human spirit, and to pressure that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

When I arrived in Europe on the 20th of June, 2011, I had no plan and certainly no idea that by the end of the week I would be practicing photography with a woman I had never met, a naturist who had never before allowed herself to be photographed nude. It was the first of a whole series of firsts for the both of us.

I had come to Europe to experience European naturism, a movement whose philosophy matched my aesthetic of body acceptance and whose organizational structure and leadership I had thought almost exclusively restricted to the western half of the continent. I was shocked to learn that naturism had an official home in Poland, a country not especially known for its liberal culture. I was less shocked to discover that the home was owned by a Dutchman, but even more shocked to learn that it had been largely built by Margo.

I had grown up in America. Land of opportunity. I came of age in the booming 90s when everything was possible. She had grown up in Poland. She had come of age at a time when the Soviets were making sure that there wasn't even anything to eat in the country. I couldn't even properly translate the word "opportunity" into Polish.

There were times during our trip when I thought there might not be a happy ending. There were times when disaster was close and I wondered whether I hadn't made a mistake. I wondered whether fear, anger or sadness might triumph and one of us would have to finished the journey alone. Though I dangled from the cliffs of Normady I was saved. Though the lights went out I rode on. Though I ran the tires down to the wire I was okay. We drove home in one piece. We came home happy. We had started the process of learning how to listen and the sound of it was beautiful. We could be sure that we were ready to conquer the devils that abuse us no matter how long it would take.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Cop

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word cop in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word cop, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word cop is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Cop in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

It was said that the practice originated some time after the Second Coming of Yellowstone, when, for some reason, there was an epidemic of sarcoptic itch, or scabies, which, being caused by a mite of very small proportions, is transmitted by skin-to-skin contact. However, long after the threat had passed, the habit remained and became infixed in what is called 'the parochial imagination' as part of the sacredness and immutable tradition and righteousness of the Holy Roman Catholic Church. When the priest bade his congregation and all assembled guests to share the sign of peace, Jesus watched as Hitler Panzer-Tank extended his hand to his wheelchair-bound neighbor. The old grandmother was shocked. She nodded her head as brusquely as possible and turned it back around. Jesus chuckled, but it wasn't funny. Hitler Panzer-Tank the Third was genuinely confused. Holding his hand out, he didn't understand what had just happened. It took him several moments before he finally concluded that the woman in the wheelchair had just rejected him. By that time he was facing forward again, his arm was back at his side, and his face was expressing his extreme displeasure. Jesus caught his eyes and nodded. Your grandfather decided not to nod back.

Verse 97 from the chapter called Vows

Your grandfather was ruined. After years of devoting himself to 'justice,' proving torts of various size and scope, the career plaintiff was himself turned into a reprehensible, grossly negligent and most liable tort-feasor. He was made to forfeit whatever damages he otherwise would've gained in favor of the other parties to his wife's estate. Jesus, for reasons never made explicitly known to him, was not a party.

Verse 63 from the chapter called Adolescence

In those days, martial law reigned in Poland. There was nothing to eat, and the government in Warsaw defended itself with militias of drug addicts, wife-beaters, and alcoholics. There was a curfew. There was violence. People were afraid; they were fearless: they joked, then ran; the people in power, they understood, were murdering clowns. They arrested people for singing songs. They attracted more attention to their own follies than their enemies did: a rebel put a flag on top of Town Hall; nobody noticed until the government responded with helicopters and took hours to take it down. Then, they shot people dead in the streets.

Verse 89 from the chapter called Childhood

By that point, there was very little information to be had. Nevertheless, as the second man at the crime scene, after the landlord, your father was seriously tempted to steal evidence. He decided against it. Stalin had complete access to the CBS crime lab, the CBS being Poland's central investigative bureau, and Jesus didn't have any friends there on the inside nor did he want to have to bribe anyone. Lab results were available to anyone in law enforcement anyway, so Jesus took some photographs and left before the cops came. Later on, Stalin went to the CBS lab and got the results. The forensic evidence indicated without a doubt that the bullets came from a Russian-made weapon, which didn't necessary mean that the perpetrator or perpetrators were Russian, but, then again, who else would be using a Russian-made weapon?

Verse 209 from the chapter called Security

Our most important surveillance work was in Wroclaw's Town Square, close to the Rathaus, which Jesus had thoroughly searched during our defense of the Old Town. Finding out where the building archives were, Jesus had made copies of all the blueprints for properties owned by anyone named Krupnik. One property was particularly interesting. It turned out, the Rathaus Club, a dance club in the middle of Wroclaw's Town Square (close to the Town Hall, or, in German, Rathaus), not surprisingly, was indeed owned by Leonard Cohen-Krupnik. This was the dance club which Columbus had played the very same night he met my sister's killer. It was very exclusive. Both the basement and the ground floor had popular dance floors. They were large and spacious; the ceiling on the ground floor was high enough to accommodate a crystal ball two meters in diameter. The second floor was a private lounge for private guests only. The third and fourth floors had private rooms and offices. Leonard Cohen-Krupnik was often there when he was in Wroclaw. He did business in the center office on the fourth floor. His window looked over the alleyway that went through the buildings in the middle of Town Square. From one of those buildings, our cameras looked on.

NIKE: That's what it felt like. Keep your hands in the vehicle at all times. Jur-ass-ic Park.

LUKA: Last year?

NIKE: A few years back.

LUKA: Maybe there were cops.

NIKE: They weren't raiding then, were they?

LUKA: How would I know?

NIKE: You don't come here?

LUKA: Why would I?

NIKE: You don't like the man-girls?

LUKA: It makes me wonder about you.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 20, Encountering the Sex Trade, Paragraphs 13-22

NIKE: You're not gonna be in a fucking raid. Are you a dummy? The cops only raid parked cars. Now go park over there and don't steal my car.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 22, Encountering Poverty, Paragraph 220

Mary for evening Mass. And so, with a 'Hey, ho!' and 'How resourceful!' off we went skipping across the square. My energy did not last however, and began to fail me sometime around the profession of faith, which I have enough trouble stumbling through without the lightness of head, or the German language for that matter. As you can imagine, when I wasn't sitting I was swaying, and by the prayers of the faithful my mind, still being rather airy, was having trouble reconciling the heaviness of my skull; my neck too had trouble coping, so that for every prayer I was, quite appropriately, hanging my head, but had to muster all my strength for the action of lifting it, which would send it catapulting back, not straight above my shoulders but quite behind them, at which point I would begin mouthing what I believed was the proper response, which, having gratefully ended, would promptly send my head bouncing back to its original position of blissful rest.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 4, Meeting a Man in Austria, Paragraph 1, Clauses 3-7

He was taken to a room. The room was very hot. There were bright lights in Nike's face. According to the sergeant, he was number four. Nike wondered what number two had done: he looked a little upset. But the rest of them were all deadpan. "Please look forward, number four." Number four looked forward. He was crossing his brow in scorn.

"Do I look like a criminal?" he thought. "I don't care...numbers one, three and five must be cops."

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 7, Surprising Oneself, Paragraphs 1-2

He even fought to secure legislation protecting the copyright of an artist. And it came as a great surprise to learn that he was very involved with the theatre. I knew that his first great painting was a scene from a contemporary farce, but the extent of the theatre's influence on him was gradually revealed to me and I was dumbfounded. He was even friends with the famous Mr. Garrick, and all this was greatly appreciated by my companions. This exploration of all the influences over Mr. Hogarth comprised the bulk of the lecture, and it extended to include not only the theatre, but also the painter's experience of marriage.

Patsy surveyed the length of the beach. There were only a few people around: two couples to the north and a pair of men to the south. As Captain Dog Paw's growling and barking reached its peak, Patsy noticed, directly ahead, a jogger-an otherwise ordinary, random, not-to-be-mentioned-twice jogger-except for one, small, apparently beachcombed pair of bright hot pants. "No," whispered Patsy. The sentiment came too late.

ALICE: It was just a regular jackknife. It wasn't very big.

FLETCHER: What did he get away with?

ALICE: My purse.

LUKE: With everything in it.

ALICE: It was so stupid. The cops could've picked him up around the corner if they had just bothered to look. They were such pigs.

FLETCHER: Don't tell that to old Grey Goose! Australian cops guilty of misprision? He would go on a rampage.

GREY GOOSE: This is the thanks I get after all these years of marriage?

MS. JACKSON: It was your pleasure to be my husband.

A gunshot echoed through the house. Proctor realized he was still alive. He looked up. As Bob fell to the floor he revealed Elizabeth's quivering body behind him. She was holding the gun Proctor had given her. She dropped it. Proctor ran to her. They embraced. Proctor started smothering her in kisses.

"You said you wanted to talk," said Elizabeth. Proctor stopped kissing her. He looked into her eyes. "I thought it was time we did."

"I don't know," said John.

"How do you not know?"

"I don't remember." John screamed a little too loud. Proctor eased up.

"Where's the letter?"

"Probably in his desk."

"At the gallery?"

"At his apartment."

"What apartment?"

"The one right below us."

"In this building?"

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a cop put in a weird position

When Proctor got home Elizabeth was packing her bags. She was going to her sister's. She didn't want Proctor coming along. She told him to look at the news. John Gamble was all over it. So was his dead husband. Found in a love nest. Which sources claimed he may have shared with a cop.
