Driver, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal is contemplating the prospect of supplementing his remarkable Fiction Corpus with a biography of his favorite fictional character; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I have faith in the soundness of administering English as a universal language. I don't trust in the enfeebling style in which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Reinforcing a person's artfulness with a language isn't like creating a brighter lantern. A language - a living tongue - isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to use with a greater amount of precision. A living language can not be segmented from the competing values of a community of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a person to recite English is to strip her of its cultural context. A proper instructor must prepare a plan for introducing it; the discerning pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe words on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of written language of various size and consistency. This corpus might include anything from a book about literature to a whole bunch of fantasy fiction. I watched many moons pass developing my "king-sized" Fiction Corpus in order to form a peculiar genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have classified them, reshaping them - not merely to teach a language but to reveal the human soul, and to goad that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Help End Political Abuse With ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

By the end of my first week in Europe in 2011, I had bought a car and out of the blue had met the woman who would join me on a 6,000 mile trek across the European continent, sharing the beat-up car that I had bought and the one small tent from Walmart that I had brought along with me on my flight.

As an artist, from the beginning of my adult career, my work had been devoted to the problem of body acceptance, a goal that I would later learn was shared by a whole community of people called naturists, a humble portion of which I discovered residing in Poland, a country whose cultural conservatism does not lend itself readily to forward thinking. One of those forward-thinking Polish naturists happened to be Margo.

I had grown up in America. Land of opportunity. I came of age in the booming 90s when everything was possible. She had grown up in Poland. She had come of age at a time when the Soviets were making sure that there wasn't even anything to eat in the country. I couldn't even properly translate the word "opportunity" into Polish.

As far apart culturally as we may have been, we spent 6,000 miles in one car. We spent over 40 nights in one tent. We started learning how to listen to each other. We started learning how to accept our differences and how to let them help us instead of driving us apart. Slowly but surely, we started learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Driver

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word driver in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word driver, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word driver is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Driver in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Outside the airport, Jesus waited for three hours. He bought a cigarette and smoked it. Twenty cab drivers tried to give him a ride. He found his grandmother's phone number and called. "What's going on?" he asked.

"What's going on?" she said. "Where are you?"

Verses 151-152 from the chapter called Adolescence

It was strange not to be walking. The horses were good for mobility's sake, but, like the priests who spent their time talking into the microphones, or the ushers who pushed people into the side of the street, or the quartermasters who arranged special housing, or the drivers and baggage handlers who transported the tents, we were set apart from the crowds of pilgrims, and, instead of concentrating on the Lord and all his gifts - our happiness and peace inside His bosom! - we were forced to think about other things - in our case, security issues: infiltrations and possible weaknesses - and, instead of looking inside ourselves and reflecting on our sins, we were made to scan the countryside for potential terrorist activity.

Verse 262 from the chapter called Security

In the meanwhile, Jesus went back to his old ways: drinking in basements, eating sausages, and letting high school girls who were fifteen years old sit on his lap and smoke his cigarettes. Jesus's company changed. His new colleagues were rejects from the draft. There was Lucius, who had some kind of nervous tremor (plus bad legs); there was Goofy, a very tall man with bad kidneys; and there was Columbus, who looked like a Columbus, even though he was a hundred percent Polish. Nobody knew how Columbus escaped from the draft, but it probably had something to do with the fact that he was a moderately well-known deejay. Nobody knew his real name, but some people said Columbus was his real name. Jesus didn't believe that, but, then again, it did say Columbus on his driver's license, which was very strange.

Verse 496 from the chapter called Adolescence

Sure enough, the driver had made Sapper's acquaintance during a certain bus trip to Berlin. His name was Washington Dulles.

Verse 133 from the chapter called Bohemia

These things didn't really concern Jesus; they were perceptions that reflected people's insecurities. Jesus had his own problems: that fateful night, while loading arms from his uncle's back room, Baron Cohen-Krupnik showed up in his electric truck. Efforts to capture him were complicated by Jesus's desire to capture this valuable asset (the truck), which he did (intact), but only after having Stalin chase it halfway around Center City (on foot), by which point, although the battery was dead and the truck's driver was forced to proceed on foot, Stalin's own battery was well out of range: he was so tired, he could barely lift his gun. Ironically, the Krupnik disappeared around St. Jesus's Church.

We were driving up the Allée du Bord de l'Eau, having turned, I presume, from Anatole Boulevard. Perhaps Nike was looking across the river at something - I don't know. At any rate, it was nighttime and very dark - there was no moon - and yet, I could see Nike's face very clearly. – Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 22, Encountering Poverty, Paragraphs 143-152

She squeezed my hand. I said good night. She closed the door and I watched them for a moment. Then I told the driver where to go. It was a long cab ride. I realized I was wearing somebody else's tuxedo. I thought about my own suit. It was hanging in somebody else's closet. I was very tired - just like I am now. I realize I've been writing all day. I had to take this home with me from the hospital. But it's already past midnight. I should really go to bed. I will write some more tomorrow.

Nike did not die, by the way, in case you're worried. They put him in a taxicab, but: Nike was not able to speak (for reasons which I dare not reveal), and: nobody told the driver where to go, so: I can only hope that he was being taken to the hospital. But, of course, I woke up en route, before he was able to reach anyplace.

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Shephard gathered their bags. Clark wondered why nobody else was moving. The bus slowed to a stop. Shephard and Clark stepped off. The driver pressed the gas.

"What's going on?" said Clark. "I don't have any contacts here."

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring one man's descent into rebellion

The driver put in another movie. This was a costume drama. A large group gathered. The men watched women dance. An old man spoke. He looked like a chief. The dubbing was atrocious. The chief stared at one of the dancers. She was beautiful. The camera took in the crowd. All the men looked like lechers. There was more dancing.

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring a bunch of camels

Shephard agreed to settle for the desert highway. As they drove down it, they could see sand stretching to infinity. The fifty-yard-deep walls of shrub on either side seemed comically insufficient. The driver wouldn't shut up about them. "Nobody think we can do it," he said. "Everybody in West say, 'You crazy.' Chinese man do it. We give proof to world of great superiority of China technology innovation. We develop over three hundred technique to build road. Three hundred. You see.

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story about people trying to survive

Clark laughed. "As long as there's oil in the desert, they'll keep those bushes alive. The poor people can starve."

The bus entered a small town. Shephard saw a building with big, square buttresses and top-hinged shutters. The sign read, "Lucky Jewel Guesthouse."

"This is it," he whispered.

He squeezed by the passengers. He told the driver to stop at the upcoming traffic circle. He roused Clark. "Come on," he said. "Let's beat the crowd."

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring a frank discussion of the roots of terrorism

Clark wondered what made Shephard so eager to get moving. He would have expected him to love wasting time at the hotel. He decided not to jinx it by asking him. On the way to Hotan, the bus driver put on a Turkic movie. Shephard watched. The plot was hard to follow. There was an old man. He was mourning. There were soldiers pushing people around. A young woman danced with what may have been her husband. The husband may have been the old man's son. It seemed the son was killed at some point by soldiers.

Usage of Driver in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Mark and Bill meanwhile were flipping through their respective letters. Mark looked up and caught sight of the old man bending over again and looking through his viewfinder. Mark sped up. He was going to get a glimpse of the eagle before it flew off. He floored the gas. Oblivious to the dangers beyond, he was rushing past the hedgerow. He craned his neck and saw a giant blue and white eagle on the side of Bill's truck. The professor hit the shutter button. Mark frantically swerved. The camera's continuous drive clicked and clicked. Mark hit the brakes. The truck slid heading straight for the professor. Its wheels locked. It surfed on the unswept gravel of the westbound lane of Profile Road and thankfully stopped before crossing the center line. Just as a UPS truck headed east. The driver saw the mass of white coming from his left and instinctively swerved away. Right into the professor. The old man was launched into the sky. Mark watched in horror as the body sailed a good 60 feet before flailing onto the ground. Mark looked at the UPS truck. The driver was paralyzed. Mark looked back at the body. He drove the 60 feet between them. There was no time to run. Reaching the remains of the professor, Mark curbed the wheels. He put the gear in park. He pulled the hand brake. He shut the engine and took out the keys. He didn't want anybody accusing him of not following proper dismounting procedures. He hopped down to the body and saw there was little to be done. He called for an ambulance.

– from “Wrong Again,” a success story to teach children about physical stuff that may or may not work

A small but considerable uproar followed reports of the accident. Some people unfairly blamed the drivers. Most blamed the postal service and the other guys for not adequately training their men. A handful blamed the professor. Everybody tried to blame the town. For the first time in a while it seemed like the town actually hadn't done anything wrong. No private person or business was willing to pay for sidewalks, with the one exception being the post office. Something Postmaster Steve pointed out rather tactlessly one day in the local paper.

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
