Kid, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal refuses to debate the notion of beefing up his modest Fiction Corpus with a morality play about reading stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I regard highly the potential of upholding English as humanity's second language. I don't think highly of the fatiguing program by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Honing a person's knowledge of a language isn't like launching a more accurate map. A language - a spoken language - isn't merely an instrument that you can learn to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A common tongue can not be insulated from the professed knowledge of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a man to recite English is to cheat him out of its cultural context. A worthy teacher must prepare a plan for introducing it; the prudent student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of writing of varying size and consistency. This corpus can contain everything from a book about literature to a lot of novels. I suffered many a sleepless night creating my "superb" Fiction Corpus to form a specific genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drafted a million words and I have examined them, reshaping them - not merely to teach a language but to be an advocate for the human soul, and to pressure that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Help Promote Citizen Diplomacy With ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

In June of 2011 I arrived in Europe for what I hoped would be a great adventure; my only concrete plan, to visit Croatia. By September I had driven 6,000 miles and visited 12 different countries, all with a woman I met on the first Friday of my trip.

Though I felt fully formed as a writer, and had been trained in visual language, it was my first time with a professional camera in my hands. I was just learning the ins and outs and had come to Europe to find as diverse a selection of subject matter as possible, preferably something that fit my aesthetic devotion to promoting body acceptance. Enter Margo.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

Each man grows up with his own kind of poverty. Even if he's got a warm house and plenty of food and a soft bed and plenty of entertainment, there's always something that a man needs. Sometimes he just needs to be listened to, if only by the birds and the trees, but preferably by another man, even if he's an artist from America who isn't very good at listening. By learning how to listen, we learn how to cooperate. By cooperating, we build a better world. In a better world, there are no devils to abuse us. A better world doesn't lend itself to abuse because a better world is populated by people who have learned how to listen.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Kid

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word kid in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word kid, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word kid is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Kid in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

They sold heroin to kids. Heroin was wrapped up in that 'premium silk.' They sold it to kids on the street. They sold it to mothers with young children. They sold it to workers, young and old, blue and white collared. They sold it to lunatics, healthy people, sick people, people in wheelchairs, deadbeats, homosexuals - they didn't discriminate. They sold it to priests, politicians, bus drivers, Jewish people -they sold it to anyone with money to spend. If you were penniless, you had to rob someone. But God forbid you should rob from them: they would kill you! They would shoot you dead! They were once your best friends back in the day. That's what it was like: they were once your best friends and they were still your neighbors; you would greet them on the way downstairs.

Verse 192 from the chapter called Adolescence

"They kicked me out," she said.

"What?"

"They kicked me out of the group."

"You're kidding."

Verses 652-655 from the chapter called Security

"His son, Andrew, showed me how much food those dogs get: a liter of soaked potatoes for three days. That's not even a meal. What poverty! What dirt and rotting smell! He wanted to give me some 'fresh milk.' I said, 'Andrew, alright, but' - I didn't finish. I just took the milk, mixed it with potatoes, and threw it to the dogs. Are you kidding me? They milk their cow with the same bucket they use for liquid manure. Natural farmers!

Verse 256 from the chapter called Adolescence

"Yes, well -"

"I'm just kidding," she said. "Who was he?"

"He was Pope many years ago."

"How many?"

"Hundreds and hundreds."

"What's his statue doing here?"

"He was Polish."

"That's it?"

Verses 359-366 from the chapter called Security

"Stay in the car," said the Krupnik.

"Are you kidding me?" said Jesus.

Macy was still talking about breakdowns and alienation. He expressed his hopes that when he had a family and kids of his own, he could avoid these sorts of misfortunes. But I was confused. I tried to picture what he meant by a family, and I couldn't see it. That confusion made me angry, but I couldn't show it.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 14, Feelings, Paragraph 1, Clauses 1-5

NIKE: With anything you want, my friend - although I recommend my personal favorite: ginger.

ANDY: Ginger? You're talkin' about makin' ginger mead?

NIKE: Oh no, strictly speaking: when mead is spiced, it's not called mead: it's called metheglin. Hence, my favorite drink is more properly known as ginger meth.

ANDY: Ginger meth? You gotta be kidding.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 2, Introducing Male Friends, Paragraphs 56-59

NIKE: Yeah, you better believe I'm talkin' about her.

ANDY: I'm trying not to think about that.

NIKE: Didn't you tell me she lives in Holland Park?

ANDY: That's right.

NIKE: She's got two kids?

ANDY: Yeah, two little girls.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 10, The Male Dilemma, Paragraphs 21-26

INDIE: Oh man, it was just too good. I mean, the girl I talked to: she claimed she was workin' sales for some import company, you know - like some kind of manager? - and she did look a bit older, but, man, she was hot. She said she had a husband, two kids, never had sex. She asked me what I liked, and she just happened to love the same things. And then we went upstairs and had amazing sex. I wanted to believe it, but I just don't. I mean: granted: women get to come in for free and hook up, but - I'm sure they let in plenty of women, but: they just can't all be amateurs, am I right?

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 9, Respecting Another's Politics, Paragraph 28

NIKE: Yeah, it's like heaven wrapped up in hell. They don't have to work alright, but not because they don't want to: they can't even feed themselves: they don't know how. The women have to feed them until the queen's ready to have kids. It's like the Amazons, for godsake. These chicks have careers, man: they start by takin' out the trash: they're on clean-up duty, disinfecting the honeycomb. After that, they become nurses - right? first for the older kids, then they're graduated to the younger ones. And then what? They become builders for a while, and then, finally, they get to fly outside for the first time. But then? they go straight to guard duty - 'cause only when you're at the top of the hive can you go out and hunt for nectar. Can you imagine what that's like? Matriarchy?

Enkidu rushed to warn his uncle. Gog was nowhere to be seen. He had charged straight into the belly of the beast. "That's one way," thought the boy. Though he didn't have a whisker to call his own, he tried to rally the men.

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a man on a quest

"Nobody. They're boys. They're not bad. I told them how dumb they are. They saw you at the market. One of them had the bright idea to kidnap you. They weren't going to do it. They knew it was stupid. It's only because they say you half-dead on the highway. They decided to wait for you at the station. I guess they talked themselves into it." She shook her head. "Do you know what they're doing now? They're watching television. They're trying to decide which news channel should get the videotape of you being held hostage. They don't have a gun to wave at you. They knocked you out with a stuffed shoe."

"Men," said Gog, "do not snipe at each other like fishmongers' wives."

"I'll be sure to take your Lordship as an example," said Enkidu. Despite the indignant tone, he gave Gog an earnest look. He said, "As soon as my toes grow back."

Gog smiled. He drew the straight sword of Asvin, the horseman of the dawn. He held it out by the blade. He said, "A man can live without toes."

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

LUKE: No kidding.

FLETCHER: She's made forty-seven thousand dollars.

LUKE: Already?

FLETCHER: It's been quite some time. She left Fiji a few years back because of a bad situation. She's still trying to reach her mark. Much to my mother's consternation, neither charity nor her wages count towards her commitment. She hasn't been seeing many clients recently. I assume she's waiting for that special somebody who's prepared to put her out of business. Unfortunately, few people are willing to pay three thousand dollars for sex.

LUKE: She wouldn't do it for less, would she?

FLETCHER: It's not a profession to her anymore; it's a punishment: a debt of honor for losing her child.

LUKE: You can't bargain with that.

FLETCHER: You could be the last one. You could put an end to this misery. She deserves somebody who can appreciate what he's doing.

LUKE: Three thousand dollars is a lot of money.

FLETCHER: The peace of mind it brings is priceless.

– ACT I, lines 771-780

ALICE: It was no big deal. It was some stupid kid with a knife.

FLETCHER: Was it sharp?

LUKE: She didn't have a chance to taste it.

FLETCHER: What did it look like?

ALICE: It was just a regular jackknife. It wasn't very big.

FLETCHER: What did he get away with?

ALICE: My purse.

LUKE: With everything in it.

ALICE: It was so stupid. The cops could've picked him up around the corner if they had just bothered to look. They were such pigs.

FLETCHER: Don't tell that to old Grey Goose! Australian cops guilty of misprision? He would go on a rampage.

– ACT I, lines 157-166

FLETCHER: You were trying to sneak away.

MS. JACKSON: Your father-

LESBIAN: What's the big idea?

MS. JACKSON: Listen.

LESBIAN: Your mother and I can do whatever the hell we please.

FLETCHER: Whenever the kids aren't looking.

MS. JACKSON: Fletch!

LESBIAN: Your mother is a grown woman.

FLETCHER: Why doesn't she act like it?

MS. JACKSON: That's enough.

– ACT I, lines 973-982

GREY GOOSE: No. You're a good kid. I know that. I only wish I could've been a better father.

FLETCHER: You were good enough.

GREY GOOSE: I wasn't.

FLETCHER: You only hit me - what? Once? I deserved it.

GREY GOOSE: I made it count.

FLETCHER: I barely felt it.

GREY GOOSE: Come on.

FLETCHER: It's better than what you had. I'm grateful.

GREY GOOSE: I'm going to miss this place.

FLETCHER: You're not out yet.

– ACT I, lines 1277-1286

LUKE: Oh, krikey! Fletcher wasn't kiddin'. I guess the sofa bed's as good a place as any. Time to slip 'em both the ol' snag. Where's that music box?

Usage of Kid in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

Sir Lewis didn't win that Olympiad. His team was full of morons. But he did get a date. And one after that. And even a few more. Until the dates blended together. And quite to his own surprise, Sir Lewis realized the puzzle had solved itself.

– from “The Skirt on the Proctor,” a kid story about stirring romance in an unforgiving world

Sir Lewis walked down the marbled hall with head held high. A sense of incipient triumph wafted between smells of old paper posters and crusty deli sandwiches and stale cookies munched on by bejacketed professors and parents out for an open house weekend. The poor fools had no idea a champion marched amongst them.

– from “The Skirt on the Proctor,” a kid story about building attachments in an unforgiving world

Sir Lewis was unperturbed. He offered Miss Day a deal. He would represent the community college in the next Olympiad. If they lost he would go away. If they won Miss Day would have to go on five dates with him.

"One date," said Miss Day.

– from “The Skirt on the Proctor,” a kid story about making the grade in an unforgiving world

Sir Lewis and the Asian girl were soon joined by a third man. Daniel. A total dork. But not completely unskilled. The Asian girl had gotten better too. And slimmer. She was wearing skirts now just like the proctor had before the proctor got pregnant. She was hot, as Daniel put it. And she had a beautiful name. Miss Day.

That year Sir Lewis, Miss Day, and Daniel placed third in the Math Olympiad. Sir Lewis was in love. He promised Miss Day they would do better the next year. And they did. They won.

– from “The Skirt on the Proctor,” a kid story about cooking up romance in an unforgiving world

Sir Lewis wasn't surprised by the scores. He rocked the individual competition. If not for his brain-dead team he could've won. One other math genius in his high school was all he needed. Instead he was matched with doofuses.

Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others.
