Policeman, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's contemplating the feasibility of strengthening his mammoth Fiction Corpus with a history of the oil painting; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I accept the possibility of exploiting English as the international community's second language. I don't have faith in the vapid manner in which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Enriching one's skill with a language isn't like developing a more resilient bow. A language - a spoken language - is not merely a tool that you can learn to use with greater amounts of precision. A spoken language can not be split from the professed knowledge of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a person to recite English is to cheat her out of its cultural context. A capable teacher has to create a strategy for introducing it; the prudent pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries define words based on a specific corpus, a set of written works of various size and consistency. A corpus could include everything from a book about literature to a lot of elaborate fictions. I lost many a sleepless night creating my "vast" Fiction Corpus to form a specific type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have shaped a million words and I have investigated them, reframing them - not merely to teach the English language but to reveal the human spirit, and to encourage that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Help End Oppression With ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Four days after I arrived in Poland, the largely Catholic country was celebrating Corpus Christi, complete with solemn processions down the street. Three days later I had made a solemn vow that if given the chance to express it, I would show love to a woman I had only just met.

As an artist inspired by a young woman's struggle with self-esteem and bulimia, body acceptance had always featured prominently in my aesthetic. Having recently discovered naturism and its mantra of body acceptance in the United States, I was eager to explore the style and philosophy of naturist clubs and the beauty of naturist campsites in Europe. By a trick of fate, I found myself first in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. Margo's home.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

As far apart culturally as we may have been, we spent 6,000 miles in one car. We spent over 40 nights in one tent. We started learning how to listen to each other. We started learning how to accept our differences and how to let them help us instead of driving us apart. Slowly but surely, we started learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Policeman

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word policeman in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word policeman, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word policeman is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Policeman in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

"I don't know: for like an hour maybe?" Jesus told them everything they wanted to know. His head kept falling down. He was tired.

"Were you up all night?" said the policeman.

Verses 650-651 from the chapter called Adolescence

"Here," said the Krupnik, "hold onto the keys if you want." Throwing him the keys, the Krupnik opened his door, got himself out, slammed the door shut, and left Jesus very nervous. Jesus clung to his weapon like a limpet clings to a rock. Nothing was around: nothing but darkness and rays of moonlight - in which, after a brief moment, Jesus glimpsed...the boy: the juvenile: the underdeveloped, disproportioned, ungainly boy, who had sat on a bullet-ridden police car's hood, dangling his too-long legs in front of a dead policeman's body. What a strange boy: walking towards the car: Jesus watched his approach in the side-view mirror. What was he up to? What did he want? He came up to the side of the car, bent over and began staring into the passenger-side window. After a moment, he tapped. Jesus rolled down the window.

"What time is it, mister?" asked the boy.

Verses 135-136 from the chapter called Arms

By the time we drove past a young boy sitting on a bullet-ridden police car's hood, it was almost impossible for us to make out the dead policeman lying in the street in front of him. We drove over the body before we noticed - that's how dark it was: there was no electricity, only moonlight. Down the road, we stopped.

Verse 132 from the chapter called Arms

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Clark felt compelled to do the same. He tried to tear off a bit of his shirt. The cloth refused to rip. He tried several times. Pepsi offered to help. Clark insisted he could do it. He attempted to use his teeth. It hurt his mouth. Clark took off the shirt. He put a foot on one sleeve. He tugged it as hard as he could. "I can't believe it," he said. He looked at the policeman. "It was made in China." Eventually, it tore.

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story set in Western China

They passed a gas station. A few minutes later, they stopped. The road was blocked. A six-wheeled cab-over-engine truck pulling an even longer trailer was overturned. There was no way around. The dunes were too thick on either side. A policeman from the local security bureau told them a bulldozer was on its way.

A man drove by on a motorcycle. Clark watched him weave and dart through the sand. He leapt over the dunes. Clark groaned. "What are we doing with camels?" he asked. "We need two of those."

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story about a crazy Navy man

"Never mind," said Shephard. "Do you have a siphon?" Coke glanced at the policeman. Their eyes met. The policeman squinted. Coke looked back at Shephard. He shook his head.

Shephard sighed. "I'll find one." He searched the bed. He found a doubled-ended toy with a hollow center. It was long enough. Shephard shoved it into the tank. He looked around. Everybody was staring.

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story about what to do if you're an American agent in western China

Clark tied the sleeve to the branch with an awkward solemnity. He looked ridiculous with one sleeve.

Shephard reached into his pants. He tore off a square of fabric from his boxer shorts. He pinned it onto the branch.

The policeman didn't want to stick out. Ripping the manufacturer's tag from his tie, he wrapped it around the branch and knotted it.

Back at the mosque, Shephard had Clark call the hotel. Coke was still waiting in the lobby. "Finally," he said. "It's time and a half for making me wait."

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story set in a place most people haven't heard of

Shephard looked around. Pepsi held the policeman's pistol-her arms stretched out, a look of unmitigated shock plastered on her face. Everybody held his breath. After a moment, the policeman took back the gun.

Shephard murmured, "Nice shot."

Usage of Policeman in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

"What did you see?" asked Proctor.

The guy shrugged. "A man in a blue jacket. Baseball cap. Sunglasses. Medium build."

"What about the car?"

The man shrugged. "I don't know. A gray SUV. Could've been silver, I guess. You know they keep a key in the flower pot."

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a policeman put in a weird position

"Detective Carlson," came the mocking tone. "Nice of you to join us." The captain was at the crime scene. That meant there was no doubt. There was a link with the first body. "Are you ready for class?" continued the captain. "We're drawing from life today." It was another man. Standing naked. Twisting. His arm over his head. His eyes closed. His face cherry red. It was turned against his shoulder. Looking back as if on a lover. Frozen in a wistful remembrance of ecstasy too swiftly gone by. It was a statue of dead flesh.

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a policeman put in a weird position

Proctor backed out of the bathroom. He looked at the window. There was a fire escape outside. It went up to the loft. Proctor went to look outside. He realized the window was unlocked. He locked it. He shut the curtain. He walked to the front door. He looked outside. The hallway was empty. Proctor tiptoed out. He tried to shut the door as quietly as he could. It wouldn't shut all the way. The frame was broken. Proctor left it. He started soft-shoeing his way down the hall. He could barely swallow his spit. There was a rock in his throat. The stairs seemed like they were getting farther and farther. He finally reached them. The stairwell was empty. He walked down the stairs. The lobby was empty. Proctor took a deep breath. He went outside. He waved to the policeman in the patrol car. He got to his own car. He drove off.

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a former flame put in a weird position

Proctor and Simmons left for the gallery. On the way down the stairs Bob called. He said something interesting had been found at the basement apartment. "An uncashed check," he said. "Made out to the vic. From three years ago. For five grand. Who doesn't cash a check like that?"

Proctor was nearing the end of the stairs. He asked, "Whose check was it?"

– from “We Need To Talk,” a mystery story featuring a policeman put in a weird position

The detective circled around the body. He couldn't see a wound. Just the redness on the face. "How is it still standing," he whispered to himself. His partner poked the cadaver. It rocked a few inches back and forth. "Enough of that, Bob," said the captain. "Proctor's seen it. Get that body on the gurney."

"Wait a minute," said Proctor. "There's no lividity in the feet. If this person was upside-down there should be more than just a red face."

Love is the answer...

What are we waiting for? Let's accept it!

Are you a eunuch?

The art show that defies abuse

St. Sebastian

Wall art symbolizing strength and protest

St. Sebastian was a member of the Roman Emperor's praetorian guard who had the audacity to teach Christian values while on the job. I think active duty American military men and women who don't vote or who don't publicly express a political opinion because of the uniform are either being idiotic or are being cowed by the threat of punishment from a superior. Either way, they're eunuchs. My purpose in creating the St. Sebastian Series is to put the flesh and face of the true soldier front and center. The good soldier puts his mission ahead of himself. He often ends up dead. The true soldier knows a bad mission when he sees one and he isn't afraid to say it. Saint Sebastian was not a cow, despite what clever people would have you believe. Saint Sebastian is a patron saint for all protestors who face the arrows of the mob for speaking out.
