Bathroom, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's ruminating on the feasibility of extending his superb Fiction Corpus with a story about fine art; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the possibility of enacting English as the world's second language. I don't have faith in the routinely sanctioned model by which the English tongue is presented for study.Pointer

Beefing up one's adeptness with a language isn't like creating a rounder wheel. A language - a common language - isn't just an instrument that you can learn to employ with greater amounts of precision. A spoken tongue can't be split from the prevailing culture of a circle of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make a person recite English is to rob him of its cultural context. A worthy teacher must develop a strategy for introducing it; the discerning student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe words based on a specific corpus, a set of written language of varying scope and consistency. This corpus can contain everything from a book about literature to some really funny stories. I suffered many a sleepless night creating my "herculean" Fiction Corpus in order to form a unique type of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have molded a million words and I have indexed them, reframing them - not just to teach the English language but to promote the human spirit, and to provoke that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

Four days after I arrived in Poland, the largely Catholic country was celebrating Corpus Christi, complete with solemn processions down the street. Three days later I had made a solemn vow that if given the chance to express it, I would show love to a woman I had only just met.

Call it an accident. Call it divine will. I was never supposed to meet Margo...if not for one man's random criminal act...another abuse piled upon humanity by a fellow human. A robbery. A purse-snatching of a purse that happened to contain a passport. An assault on the human body. One of society's bad habits that I had come to fight as an artist working for body acceptance.

From America I brought with me the American can-do spirit. She saw the car that I had bought, the terrible camp stove I had borrowed, and my sundry canned goods and challenged me to make-do. In my optimism I assured her that if we lacked for anything I would make up the difference. She assured me that if she lacked for anything she would find her way to the nearest airport and fly home. Luckily that never happened.

I've never gone hungry without deserving it. I've never been systemically beaten by a parent. I've never been fondled by a priest. That doesn't mean I can't listen to somebody who has had to experience such abuse and it doesn't mean I can't try to understand. Margo and I traveled 6,000 miles together. We slept in the same tent. We had to listen to each other. A person shouldn't need 6,000 miles to do it. We should be able to listen to each other just because we want to. We should've been taught to do it. If we haven't been taught, we should be learning how to do it and learning fast.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Bathroom

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word bathroom in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word bathroom, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word bathroom is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Bathroom in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Second, there was only one security camera inside that office: lodged in the same corner as the door to the bathroom, it was meant to identify those who entered through the double doorway to the hall; the only other door, apart from the door to the bathroom, was on the opposite side of the double doorway and led to Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's personal library, which, in turn, led to his private boudoir, in which there were no cameras and from which there was no other outlet.

Verse 1136 from the chapter called Security

Third, and most importantly, on the opposite side of the door to the bathroom, near the window, was Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's desk, in the top-most drawer of which, on the right-hand side for the man who sat there with his back against the natural light, and on the left-hand side for everyone else, was a gun, which the Krupnik kept just in case of misunderstanding.

Verse 1137 from the chapter called Security

The right bedroom was empty; the window was open. The main room was also empty; the area where the Black Madonna had proudly stood was now given back to the television. The bathroom was empty; so was the kitchen. That was it. She's not here, I said to myself.

Verse 593 from the chapter called Adolescence

After that first guard, everything went according to plan. It was perfect. Calling Stalin, I climbed to the third floor. Entering Zoe's room, I locked the door and climbed into the air-conditioning duct. Two minutes later, when the song hit the bridge and the bass line changed, I was approaching Leonard Cohen-Krupnik's bathroom. Twenty seconds later, I was inside. Removing my mask, I stormed out, raised my gun, and yelled, "Get up!"

Verse 1181 from the chapter called Security

"Now," he told me once, when he came to visit me on leave, "I'm lucky if they let me fall asleep before dawn. They make us hold stools all night long, when we're running, when we're doing calisthenics, when we go to the bathroom - then, after about five hours of holding stools, we stand in a row and hold them out in front of us. We have to hold them by gripping the bottom of one leg. Then they come with bottles of water, not to let us drink - God forbid they should let us drink. They put the bottles onto our stools - if we spill them, they kick us in the gut. Then, we get to kick them back - if we don't, they kick us again. It's very weird."

"Very sadistic," I said.

Verses 20-21 from the chapter called Arms

Usage of Bathroom in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

NIKE: Oh God, no: it's disgusting. Do it at home if you have to - or at least go to the bathroom.

ANDY: Yeah, I guess that's the point, huh? Some people just can't be satisfied with blowing into a soft tissue.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 12, Understanding Humor and Ridicule, Paragraphs 10-11

When the lecture was over, I tried to think of a good question, but I couldn't think of one; my mind was too busy digesting. I wanted to exchange a few words with the scholar, but I couldn't think of what I would say, and there was no one there to introduce me. (Of course, I would've introduced myself - if I weren't so inhibited - but, as a painter, I have yet to be exhibited). So I stood around waiting, thinking to myself, not realizing that Christie had disappeared. After most of the people had left, I realized that Macy and I were still waiting; I had no idea why - since we had not said a single word to each other. "Macy," I said, "why are we waiting?" He looked confused for a moment, as if he couldn't remember, and then suddenly he said, "Christie went to the bathroom." I asked him when she had left and Macy was quite sure she had left immediately after the lecture - which was quite a long time ago.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 12, Private Clubs, Paragraph 5

I decided we should go and check, asking one of the nearest gentlemen whether a lady could possibly find a toilet in such an establishment. "Certainly," he said, "it's at the top of the stairs." But I smiled. "Is that so?" I said. "Well, you certainly didn't make it easy enough. Our friend left half an hour ago and she still hasn't come back. I'm sure there's a gentleman's bathroom around every corner." He had to laugh in agreement.

– Title 2, Regarding the Romaniac, Part 1, Section 12, Private Clubs, Paragraph 6

The bathroom was much less filthy, and this, I thought, could only mean one thing: Luke probably had not been taking advantage of it - but I'm sure that you could think of other, equally plausible theories. Enough about Luke; I refrained from cleaning his bathroom - let's leave it at that. Letting the shower run, I washed out my mouth and sat down on the toilet.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 2, Letting It Steam, Paragraph 2, Clauses 1-3

Today has been a very long day for me: I had to wake at six in the morning to make the early train to the city. Nike's party was at seven o'clock in the evening, and after stopping for lunch at the station I went down to the dormitories on Prospect Street, looking for Luke of course. He's directing a musical revue for the university, as part of a temporary position that he thinks he'll have till the end of next term (with any luck, they'll want to take him for good and he'll be silly enough to do it). I'll never understand why he agreed to live in those dormitories, surrounded by the most unattractive facilities; at least he has his own bathroom, and I meant to take advantage of it, having tried unsuccessfully to sleep on the train. My hair was a complete mess. And it's much longer by the way; you haven't seen it but it almost reaches my shoulders.

Proctor backed out of the bathroom. He looked at the window. There was a fire escape outside. It went up to the loft. Proctor went to look outside. He realized the window was unlocked. He locked it. He shut the curtain. He walked to the front door. He looked outside. The hallway was empty. Proctor tiptoed out. He tried to shut the door as quietly as he could. It wouldn't shut all the way. The frame was broken. Proctor left it. He started soft-shoeing his way down the hall. He could barely swallow his spit. There was a rock in his throat. The stairs seemed like they were getting farther and farther. He finally reached them. The stairwell was empty. He walked down the stairs. The lobby was empty. Proctor took a deep breath. He went outside. He waved to the policeman in the patrol car. He got to his own car. He drove off.
