Outer Space, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the words from all angles...

Michal's thinking about the prospect of amplifying his formidable Fiction Corpus with a story about how to write a story; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I don't doubt the soundness of exploiting English as a universal language. I don't trust in the tepid model by which the English language is taught.Pointer

Perfecting one's adroitness with a language isn't like making a brighter pigment. A language - a common language - isn't merely an instrument that you can learn to exploit with a greater amount of precision. A living language cannot be riven from the professed knowledge of a society of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a person to recite English is to deprive her of its cultural context. An informed educator must have a strategy for introducing it; the perceptive student goes out to seek it.

A dictionary has the potential to be an influential tool. A decent dictionary will define a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a body of writing of various size and consistency. This corpus might include anything from a book about literature to a collection of book reviews. I suffered many a sleepless night laboring on my "petty" Fiction Corpus to form a unique kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have devised a million words and I have investigated them, reframing them - not simply to teach the English tongue but to be an advocate for the human spirit, and to provoke that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Four days after I arrived in Poland, the largely Catholic country was celebrating Corpus Christi, complete with solemn processions down the street. Three days later I had made a solemn vow that if given the chance to express it, I would show love to a woman I had only just met.

Though as an artist I had been working on body acceptance since the start of my career, and as a one-time practicing figure model was used to being nude in a social setting, I had been left largely unexposed to the community of naturists and nudists working towards the same goal of promoting the human being. Visiting nude beaches and resorts along the East Coast and participating in events organized around New York by Young Naturists America, I was left hungry for more and had come to Europe to see things from their side of the pond. Margo was my introduction.

I considered myself young and able, and being American I often convinced myself I was more than able. She didn't feel quite so young. Having grown up in Poland, what was and is still considered by many to be a poor country, she had the added burden of not only being disadvantaged but having it held against her. The difference became palpable when I realized I couldn't even properly translate into Polish the very American word, "opportunity." A chance? Sure. An occasion? Why not? An opportunity? Not in the book.

Despite the cops in Vienna. Despite the rain in Veržej. Despite getting lost in Italy. Despite parting at Soest. Despite that night in Amsterdam. Despite our fight in Lisieux. Despite the storm in the Bois de la Roche. Despite that terrible morning outside Collonges. Despite the long road to Pielenhofen, we came back safe and sound and most importantly we were happy. We had started to learn how to listen. We had left the devils of the road behind and the devils ahead seemed just a little bit smaller. We had started to open up.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the words Outer Space

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the words outer space in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the words outer space, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the words outer space are located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting their cultural power.

Usage of Outer Space in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

In those days, many political things were happening. War broke out: a United Nations coalition led by the United States was fighting piracy in outer space. There was a man calling himself Sadatmo of Dhagbod; he was a leader of pirates threatening the trade routes between the Moon, where China dominated, and the Earth's orbit, which America controlled. For reasons beyond my scope of understanding at the time, this conflict involved Mars, which, apparently, had been supporting the pirates in their struggle against American trade interest. Many of the pirates were members of bankrupt or otherwise out-of-business tourist or shipping companies. They blamed America for their abject poverty: they had nothing, and the companies who cooperated with the United States (flying their flag even!) were considered fair game.

Verse 119 from the chapter called Childhood

The destruction was awesome. The U.S. Space Marines punched a hole through the main defenses; another group made a feint. Meanwhile, armored ships outflanked the pirates from their weakest point. They were encircled. Within days, the great armed forces of Sadatmo ceased to exist. Many surrendered; others ran away. The coalition held back. The great tyrant escaped into the blackness of outer space.

Verse 127 from the chapter called Childhood

The Reserve Army division (whose general staff headquarters had been placed in Treblinka) was supposed to be preventing terrorists from joining up with their brethren in Poznan (to the north) or else from filtering through the southwestern Polish countryside towards the nearest spaceport around, located a few miles south of Warsaw. The Reserve Army, in the few weeks since Wroclaw had fallen under terrorist siege, had made several very important and surprising accomplishments: it had finally stopped favoring Germany and German interests; it had finally looked past the so-called 'Looney Triangle' of Hamburg, Bremen, and Berlin; it had finally considered the possibility that terrorists were being manipulated (or else directly controlled) by an agent or agents whose agendas had very little in common with terrorists' traditional goals of killing Americans and their allies - after all, what the hell were they doing on planet Earth? They had plenty of soft targets in outer space and especially in Earth's orbit - they were consciously neglecting them. That made no sense whatsoever. The Reserve Army finally deployed two divisions east. As an afterthought, one was sent down to Silesia, while the main contingent made a beeline to the capital. Thanks to them, Jesus found his way out.

Verse 8 from the chapter called Bohemia

"Terrorists," my cousin laughed. "The terrorist war, the Martian Revolution. The Reserve Army's been burning all of its fossil fuel reserve fighting these goddamn terrorists; no one's been able to transport fossil fuels to outer space or to Mars for the past - God knows how long; fossil fuel consumption's been up ever since interplanetary trade fell to shit, and all despite the rising prices and restrictions - the Americans finally realized we have to do something about the atmosphere again."

Verse 74 from the chapter called Bohemia

Most people wrote him off as a crazy man. Others were more skeptical: they wondered what a Martian man was doing on Earth collaborating with terrorists. People said: he's a criminal: he escaped from Mars and joined up with pirates and all the other dispossessed and frustrated scumbags in outer space - what do you think he wants? Money, money, money! What do you think drives him? His own greed! Spite! His diabolical schemes for grabbing power and fifty wives like all the other rich pirates.

What about this Zeus fellow?

The Body Acceptance Calendar

A really good idea for a monthly calendar

If a 45-year-old businesswoman and hard working mother of three kids is going to pose nude for a calendar, it's gonna have to be a good one. Margo didn't start a coffee shop called the Vagina Cafe to win her favors from the establishment. Even as she dishes out prizes to the 20 women who placed last in the twentienth anniversary run of her town's biggest road race, her business, unlike everyone else, doesn't get mentioned. She was an official sponsor for Christ's sake! But the announcer just couldn't swallow his patriarchy and get the words "Vagina Cafe" out of his mouth. That's not something a proper gentleman would say in front of a crowd of humble God-fearing "ladies" who cherish their modesty! And a Body Acceptance Calendar is certainly not what a humble God-fearing book-seller like a Barnes and Noble would put on their shelves! So how do I expect to sell this in the mainstream? Maybe if you download the free versions a thousand billion times it might help. Start downloading.
