Tunnel, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal declines to contemplate the viability of strengthening his humungous Fiction Corpus with some truly brilliant halloween stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I have faith in the potential of exercising English as humanity's second language. I don't believe in the regular strategy by which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Beefing up a person's expertise with a language isn't like developing a stronger brace. A language isn't merely an instrument that you can teach yourself to utilize with greater amounts of precision. A shared tongue cannot be sequestered from the shared logic of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

Teaching a pupil to recite English is to strip him of its cultural context. A good educator must develop a technique for introducing it; the smartest pupil ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary can be an influential tool. The best dictionaries describe a language on the basis of a particular corpus, a set of written works of various size and consistency. They can include anything from a book about literature to some really novel fiction. I watched many nights pass creating my "extraordinary" Fiction Corpus in order to form a peculiar kind of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in myriad forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have constructed a million words and I have inspected them, reformulating them - not merely to teach the English tongue but to describe the human spirit, and to propel that spirit or soul not just to recite but to happen.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Tunnel

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word tunnel in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word tunnel, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word tunnel is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Tunnel in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Protected by the MTA (the Martian Terrestrial Authority, which was created for the purpose), the nuclear bomb was successfully transported. In the meantime, in cooperation with Panzer-Tank Mining, Yariba Corporation dug a deep tunnel into the base of Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system. It's twenty-seven kilometers high! Five hundred and forty kilometers wide! I'm sure you've noticed it. They put the nuclear bomb inside the tunnel and off it went, clearing the most enormous cavern ever made. They drilled holes through the top. They drilled holes through the sides. They laid pipes. They brought water and boiled it. The steam went through the steam turbines, rose to the very top and fell back down again, going through the water turbines on the way back down to the boiler - a gigantic operation. A simple operation! A Martian child could appreciate its magnificent beauty, and, not having to wonder whence that blessed power comes, can look outside his northern window and see that brilliant topographical majesty that gives him light. Blessed Olympus! How young those Martians are when they first learn to fear her power! Give them light, Olympus! Not tyranny! Not shadow and pain! Give them light!

Usage of Tunnel in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Soon enough, she was swallowed by the waiting crowd. They were all waiting to get it on. They might as well have all been naked: I could see right through their clothes. They were all coming in droves: like bees: coming on, getting off. The train kept going in and out of tunnels.

Usage of Tunnel in Tsiga Tsiga Tsiga

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Shephard lowered his AK-47. He asked in Chinese, "Where's the other one?" The officer waved his gun towards the tunnel. Shephard stepped to the edge. He craned his head around the corner. There was nobody.

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring camels

He was right. Shephard leapt over the ridge. The tunnel was below him. He came down the slope. He drove into the ruins. He stopped in front of the other tunnel. He dropped the motorcycle. He ran into the courtyard There was a set of open gates on the other side. It led to another yard. He heard the humvee roll up to the outside tunnel. He heard car doors slamming. He was at the door of the mosque. He stopped. He leaned down. He untied his shoes. He took them off. He placed them neatly in the corner. Pepsi opened the door.

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring really poor people

"We have to go," she cried. She leapt towards the door. Neal jumped after her. "That woman is in danger," she yelled. "We led the killer right to her." Tatum tore through the cars. She reached the end. She jumped into the tunnel. Neal had no choice. He followed.

– from “Dirty Manga People Are Disgusting,” a spooky story featuring lesbians and aliens

The investigator popped into view. He stepped into the tunnel. He pulled Pepsi in with him. "Take care of this one," he said. He pushed Pepsi towards the officer. He told Shephard to put his hands on his head. He obeyed. He was told to get down. Thinking about it, he took too long. The investigator knocked him to his knees with the butt of his pistol.

– from “Two Dudes and a Chinese Desert,” a friendship story featuring people who will cut your throat

Clark said in a loud voice, "I think he's back there." Somebody shushed him.

A head popped out from the tunnel. It was the man from the PSB. Shephard recognized him from the accident on the desert highway. He looked frightened.

Usage of Tunnel in Miscellaneous Dingbats

The title of the book at the end of a string of miscellaneous dingbats

A story book full of short fiction stories. An interesting bedtime mystery. A fairy tale. Science fiction romance. Adult life. Uninspiring gay fiction. Horror.

"Why not," said Pfizer. "Haven't you heard? The odds of disappearing into oblivion are now twelve to one. A child could do it. Like that courier," said Pfizer in a mocking tone. "Captain Orbitz. He's passed between branes thirty times. That's not even the record." A klaxon suddenly blared overhead. Pfizer had just grown a potato. "By the time I get back," he cried, "it's going to be covered in sprouts." He had to leave it. He was grumbling all the way down the shaft.

– from “Titan's Reign,” a science fiction story that captures the light at the end of the tunnel even when it's traveling at light speed

The creeping silence of the crowded room finally brought Pfizer back to his senses. He faced forward and sat up straight in his flex-form chair. "No," he said. "It's Microsoft, by the way."

– from “Titan's Reign,” a science fiction story that captures the light at the end of the tunnel even when it's traveling at light speed

Light seeps in. A tunneling creature has freed us. We are lifted on the breeze. I leave my bags behind. I must cling to my comrade. For an instant a field lies ahead. Then the sky. Then the backs of doves. I wonder carelessly if we are approaching heaven but the spinning keeps its relentless pace.

– from “Shovels Fall,” an interesting story about the cycle of social upheaval throughout history

Living with Barack wouldn't have made any difference. He wasn't attacked at home like Khalifa. He was attacked by ten men in the middle of the street. In the middle of the day. People standing all around. If I had moved in with him it could've been me in that tunnel to the station. We could both be twitching for the rest of our lives. He told me when he saw me he considers it lucky I was not there.

– from “A Black Man in Moscow,” an inspirational story inspired by fact, though the details are fictional

Natural + Life

Large Wall Art Depicting the Human Landscape

Life is a spinning sphere with Joy at one pole and Sadness at the other. Each continuously feeding its pair. Joy flanked by the emotions of Trust on one side, Surprise on the other. Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others. Multiplied and divided, in equal parts. Such that to those from whom it has been subtracted, we must add. Until we are whole.
