Love, a cultural introduction

Getting to know the word from all angles...

Michal's thinking over the notion of enlarging his vast Fiction Corpus with really inspirational stories; cites fatigueDictionary icon

I trust in the potential of exercising English as a universal standard. I do doubt the blah blah blah scheme by which the English language is presented for study.Pointer

Reenforcing one's intimacy with a language isn't like bringing about a more prodigious quern. A language - a common tongue - isn't just a tool that you can teach yourself to employ with greater amounts of precision. A living language cannot be partitioned from the prevailing culture of a group of people of which it is a description. A language isn't recited; it happens - and keeps happening as long as a circle of people keeps using it.

To make pupils recite English is to strip them of its cultural context. A worthy teacher must develop a technique for introducing it; the wisest student ventures out to seek it.

A dictionary - properly used - can become an influential tool. A decent dictionary will describe words based on a specific corpus, a body of written works of various scope and consistency. They can include anything from a book about literature to some really commercial fiction. I lost many a night forging my "unimpressive" Fiction Corpus in order to form a distinct genre of dictionary based on the ability of one man to tell a story in many different forms. It is a labor of love and listening.

I have drawn up a million words and I have ordered them, reshaping them - not simply to teach American vocabulary but to promote the human soul, and to encourage that soul or spirit not just to recite but to happen.

Lots of people go on road trips. Not everybody criss-crosses Europe in 46 days. Especially not with a complete stranger.

I had come to Europe to experience European naturism, a movement whose philosophy matched my aesthetic of body acceptance and whose organizational structure and leadership I had thought almost exclusively restricted to the western half of the continent. I was shocked to learn that naturism had an official home in Poland, a country not especially known for its liberal culture. I was less shocked to discover that the home was owned by a Dutchman, but even more shocked to learn that it had been largely built by Margo.

I considered myself young and able, and being American I often convinced myself I was more than able. She didn't feel quite so young. Having grown up in Poland, what was and is still considered by many to be a poor country, she had the added burden of not only being disadvantaged but having it held against her. The difference became palpable when I realized I couldn't even properly translate into Polish the very American word, "opportunity." A chance? Sure. An occasion? Why not? An opportunity? Not in the book.

Margo and I spent over 40 days on the road. We started out as basically strangers, but in those 40 days we started listening to each other. We started teaching ourselves how to cooperate. Our journey across Europe may have ended, but our journey towards each other continues. No amount of fear, anger, sadness, disgust or anticipation can stop hope. Slowly but surely, we're learning how to beat the devils that abuse us.

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
Understanding the word Love

A word can represent many things. First and foremost it represents a type of gesture. A specific way of speaking. A specific way of inscribing a mark. A specific way of moving your hand. To know one of these kinds of gestures is to know how to pronounce the word love in some kind of way.

If you want to communicate an idea using the word love, you will need to know what other people are made to think when you make the gesture. You will never have complete awareness of or control over the associations or identities that are invoked by a set of words, but you can know what was and what is a single word's jointly accepted definition, at least for a given place, thereby tracing a direction which will help you to understand what kinds of associations and identities are driving its use.

By using the word yourself, you enter into a long-standing albeit oftentimes unconscious debate over its definition, forever entangling yourself into the history of its use. The way you use it, and which other words you use it with carries weight.

The more you know about where the word love is located in the fabric of a language, the better you will be at exploiting its cultural power.

Usage of Love in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

That's what my grandmother said. She said, "We used to say: it's the end of the world and half of America. Well, that is exactly what happened." She told the story of her grandfather: "In those days, after Yellowstone, very few people could go to America - the Americans didn't want anyone to go there. My grandfather went there four times - five of his eldest children were living there. The last time, when he came back to Poland, he found his wife and all the rest of his children suffering from typhus. They were all in bed or on the floor, moaning and half-conscious. They were twelve in number; my mother was the youngest. My grandfather did everything he could for them, and, realizing that the whole village was sick, he ended up taking care of his neighbors too. In fact, he buried eight of their children. Then he died himself. His family buried him."

Verse 74 from the chapter called Childhood

None of this mattered on Mars. There, on that planet, where anti-trust laws had absolutely no jurisdiction, Cheap Alaskan Air bottles were produced and sold as usual - with face masks - right until the Revolution.

Verse 80 from the chapter called Childhood

Like the Americans in space - oh, you don't understand: my dearest child, you have been sheltered! Your grandfather has prepared you for greatness. He doesn't know how great you can be. He thinks you will rule Centropolis. But you are meant for glory, not riches. If you rule, you will rule terribly. But if you fight, you will gain glory! I am calling for war, my child! Your grandfather is a coward. He wants nothing more than for you to preserve the status quo - but you would place us all in danger. Julius would move against you. He waits for your grandfather's death. He knows that once your grandfather dies, he will have a chance to seize power, and, my child, if you do nothing, he will take it away from you. Preserve yourself! Not for your own sake, but for your beloved mother's.

Verse 13 from the chapter called Invocation

Usage of Love in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

I was driving in Nike's car; actually, I was being driven. Nike was driving and I was floating beside him. Sometimes, I came rather close to his face, especially when he turned right. But when he turned left, I was pressed against the passenger window. Apparently, in my dreams, centrifugal force can still control my consciousness. Even as he went over a bump, without hitting the roof, I would bob up and down - very strange.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 1, Relations Between Siblings, Paragraph 7

The possibility terrified him, which is why he still harbored some hope that he might be only nervous or something, and that his lack of preparedness was only a false image, a distortion of reality, because he, Nike, was completely sure of what he wanted: he wanted the woman.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 3, The Third Day, Part 1, Family & Welfare Reform, Section 2, Understanding Physical Desire, Paragraph 5

She was, and remains, a woman of modest beauty. Her soul's modesty flows naturally into her body and her mind. Therefore I never suspected her innocence; it is for this reason that I have come to love her. Indeed, the circumstances of this early acquaintance involved a strange kind of love; for in those days, I was uncommonly infatuated, not with her person, or her body for that matter, but strangely enough, with her hair. I simply envied it; from every angle, under every light, with every cut she ever possessed from short to long, I was keenly aware of its brilliance. I wish I could objectively say it was exceptional, but my excitement was largely due to my fascination with the color burgundy.

– Title 1, Regarding Peaches and Bananas, Part 2, Section 6, Third Party Intervention, Paragraph 1, Clauses 4-10

Gog walked up the river Danu. He was greatly troubled. "How am I to find the holy mountain?" he asked himself. "The Haoma [i.e. a caste of priests] say the stars revolve around it. The sun hides behind it at night. Water descending its slopes forms the great sea upon which the earth rests. What then should I take for a guide: that which drowns, that which burns, or those which, when one stares at them for long enough, gives one a sore neck?"

– from “In the Beginning, There was Gog,” a fantasy story featuring a frank discussion of astronomy

Gog laughed. He cried, "Lizard woman, you picked the wrong man to way-lay. I have slain my entire family. Who are you to parry with me?" He drew the sword of Gog, the Skin Smoother of the Matiani. It swam like crystal in the morning light. The woman gulped. She tightened her grip. She tentatively pointed her sword forward. Gog beat Neck-smoother against it. The blade bent. The woman stared at it. After a moment, she gave Gog an icy stare. She stepped backwards. She put the tip of the sword onto the ground. She used her foot to bend it straight

Dorothea clenched her jaw. "Well?" she asked. "Do I have an answer?" Her son stared blankly. She continued, "I understand you have feelings for her. I'm not asking you never to see her again. I simply want you to give me your assurance that you won't marry her."

"I can't," said Junior. "I love her."

Chiseled letters from an ancient stone tablet hanging on a wall

A real play. With drama in it. Talk fast. It takes two hours. Set in a guest house. In a small community. After a murder. Lots of suspicion. The characters learn to listen to each other. It's funny.

LESBIAN: It's a tiny bug that invades trees and makes them grow abnormal clumps of tissue. It doesn't have to be a tree. I remember my mother's rose-hedge suffering from gall. I had absolutely no idea what it was. I thought it was some kind of strange flower. It started growing these round, fluffy balls of blood-red fiber. I thought it was gorgeous. It has its own name - a beautiful one. It's known as Robin's pincushion.

MS. JACKSON: Oh, Heavens! My pincushion: it's still missing. I'm sorry, Homo. I didn't mean to interrupt.

LESBIAN: It's not a problem.

MS. JACKSON: I don't understand. Who could've taken it?

LESBIAN: Somebody close to you.

MS. JACKSON: Who?

LESBIAN: More importantly, why?

MS. JACKSON: It's only a pincushion.

LESBIAN: I thought it was more than that.

MS. JACKSON: To my family - not to anybody else.

– ACT I, lines 505-514

FLETCHER: I lost my virginity to a married woman. Her husband was abroad - had been for several months. She did plan on joining him, but she loved sex - she admitted it - more than she loved her husband. Then again, I didn't really know the man. Maybe he was the same way. Maybe he was a scoundrel. Some women are just crazy. I was doing work on her balcony at the time. She would undress in front of me through the window. She even let me watch her masturbate. I was around eighteen years old. She was forty. I had no idea what to do. I couldn't do anything, anyway. I was surrounded by my crewmates. When we finished, we packed up and we left. I didn't see her for several weeks. In due course, we bumped into each other at one of the local pubs. She asked me how I was doing. I told her I was fine. I bought her a few drinks. She asked me to take her home. I did. On her front porch, as she was removing her keys from her pocket, she dropped something.

ALICE: A condom.

FLETCHER: How did you know?

ALICE: I guessed.

FLETCHER: Is that something you've done?

ALICE: I've never done it. I assume, if you want to get your point across, that's the most powerful way.

FLETCHER: It's true. I couldn't help myself. I had to go up to her room.

ALICE: Did you like it?

FLETCHER: I loved it - as it was happening. When we were finished, I felt as dirty as a pig. She wanted me to come every Wednesday afternoon like clockwork.

ALICE: Did you?

– ACT I, lines 642-651

LUKE: Why not? You've lived in peace for so long.

FLETCHER: If by peace you mean we've committed just about every crime except murder.

ALICE: Is that true?

MS. JACKSON: My son likes to exaggerate.

FLETCHER: Consider it. In a community of such close quarters with nowhere to go, the only thing you can't ignore is a dead body. Besides that, anything goes.

MS. JACKSON: Feel free to ignore my son's imagination.

FLETCHER: The next time I'm selected for a jury, I'm not going to lie when they ask me if I've ever been accused or been the victim of a crime.

ALICE: You lied?

FLETCHER: I said no.

MS. JACKSON: When have you been the victim of a crime?

It's natural to hide dirty things. They're embarrassing. But we need to keep in mind that when we hide things that are difficult, we make them seem dirty when they're really something else entirely. And when we keep things that are easy in plain sight, we make them seem clean when they really aren't. That is dangerous.
